Rangel says he will not resign over back taxes dispute

Rangel is not resigning.
Rangel is not resigning.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Rep. Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, said Tuesday he would not step down as chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means committee in the face of calls from the Republican leader in the House for him to resign.

Rangel has been under fire for failing to report income from a rental property he owns in the Dominican Republic. He admitted Tuesday he had not paid tax on the income, but said it was a mistake and that he would pay whatever back taxes he owes.

Yet another corrupt member of Congress. They should move their meetings from the Capital to Leavenworth prison.

I'm not sure what is more soul-draining sad, that a candidate for the presidency (McCain) chauvinistically ignores campaigning on the pressing issues of the day in favor or trash talking opponents, or that a majority of Americans apparently agrees. We are truly in the age of trash TV, where superficiality trumps substance. Sad. So sad. Our forefathers would be ashamed.

Doubtful the man does his own tax return – was this an error by his accountant, or did he neglect to give his accountant the info? If the former, it is an honest error. If the latter, fry him or vote him out. Don't care who he is or what party he belongs to.

Mr. rangel, its not a mistake. And everyone else that knows right from wrong. Own up and pay. Nothing is taken out of contexts rarely. People mean what they say then cover up... Pay up! doesn't matter, Rep, Dem, Ind pay your taxes like the majority of American citizens.

He should resign and I expect he will be made to or something similar will happen. Republicans make excuses for the lies, fraud, corruption and sex scandals in their party. I expect the Democrats WILL NOT do likewise. Anyone seen John Edwards lately? No, he has been shunned. Whereas the Republicans put an adulterer at the top of the ticket.

It is ashamed that the republicans are able to continue to bamboozle the people through their naked-lies and tricks about what's been going on in the country over the last 8 years.

I hope the people will wake in time before it is too late and take back Washington.

    Obama/Biden 08/12.

Where is Obama's outrage at mr rangel?

And to PA Independent: Mr. Rangel said "His wife does the taxes" so he doesn't know anything about this "undeclared" income.

    Riiiiiiight.

If this were a republican, and i don't like Dems or Repubs, the liberal lunatics would be outraged at this "corruption"

    blah blah blah

keep defending this guy, you liberals. you know if the shoe was on the other foot, you would freak out. get over yourselves.

Can we get a REAL candidate for President, please?

    No mccain.
    No obama.

    Another corrupt politiician.

Of course, the bigger issue is there are way too many laws requesting what you need to report and file. Even Congress can't keep up with it.

Their solution? Legislate more laws that need to be enforced by the bureaucracies in Washington.

    What goes around comes around....

    Enough is enough!

He should step down. He also has multiple rent stabilized apartments in Harlem (that could be occupied otherwise be people who actually need lower housing costs) and he uses one illegally as an office. Talk about a pig in lipstick....

Sorry but if you or I had an account prepare out taxes we would still be held accountable AND PAY INTEREST because ultimately you are responsible for your own taxes. He is a politician and didn't know laws about taxes??? Come on. As a politician your returns are scruntinized much more than anyone elses and you are goind to blame the account? Whatever.

Good Rangel, DO NOT RESIGN. Probably the ones yelling the loudest about it, have a lot more to hide that is not a mistake. DO NOT RELENT!!

Of course he won't resign. Democrats aren't held to the same standard as Republicans are held to. If this was a Republican, he would have already resigned and it would have been on the front page of every major newspaper in America.

typical. democrats don't have to resign for embezzling or tax evasion or sex scandals or hiding cash in their freezers. But let this happen to a republican...

no matter how much lipstick you put on this pig, it is still a democrat playing to a double standard.

Typical politician. When they do something wrong it's "oopsie, I forgot", when joe schmoe does something wrong it's lock him up for the next ninety years, fine him into debt, and pretty much ruin the rest of his life.

Geeze louise. Let's get a little equity here.
