Former GOP senator calls Palin a 'cocky wacko'

Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.
Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.

(CNN) – Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee was known for keeping a low-key profile on Capitol Hill, but the Republican -turned -Independent is making waves with his exceedingly blunt comments on newly-minted Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin:

She's a "cocky wacko," he told a Washington think tank earlier this week.

WATCH: Chafee make the remarks

Chafee, the lone Senate Republican to vote against the Iraq war who endorsed Obama's White House bid earlier this year, told an audience at the New America Foundation in Washington Tuesday that Palin's selection has energized Obama backers.

"People were coming into my office, phone calls were flooding in, e-mails were coming in, 'I just sent money to Obama, I couldn't sleep last night' - from the left. To see this cocky wacko up there," he said.

He also described McCain's candidacy as "lackluster” and described the selection of Palin as a throwing "this firestorm, this tornado, into the whole presidential election."

Chafee, whose father served as senator from Rhode Island from 1976 until his death in 1999, narrowly lost his re-election bid two years ago to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse amid that election cycle’s wave of anti-Republican sentiment.

Chafee made a stir earlier this year when he directly called out Democrats who supported the Iraq war and were now expressing regret for their vote.

“I find it surprising now, in 2008, how many Democrats are running for president after shirking their constitutional duty to check and balance this president,” he wrote in his January 2008 book, “Against the Tide.” “Being wrong about sending Americans to kill and be killed, maim and be maimed, is not like making a punctuation mistake in a highway bill."

I would actually have other non-mentional words to call her but "cocky wacko" fits well.

About time someone from the Republican't party admitted what we all knew already. Did anyone else happen to notice when Palin was greeted in Alaska she had to read her remarks off a teleprompter? They don't even trust her to talk to people where she is allegedly popular. LOL I am just waiting for the day when she shows us the string in her back that you pull to repeat 3 lines over and over.

Anyone with common sense would know that there is something wrong with the Rep. VP pick...surprisingly enough, some people seem to be excited about that! I'm really confused about what american people really want for the country!

To me, there is one real candidate in this election, and another one who's just there for the show!

I disagree slightly with Senator Chaffee.

The true "Wacko's", are the Americans who are buying into this "Sarah Palin" hype. She is nothing more than a "concept". Kind of like what "Mrs. Butterworth" is to syrup, or what "Ronald" is to McDonalds.

It's hard to believe that an unqualified Hockey Mom, is just one rigged election, and a McCain missed heartbeat away from running this country.

And yet many Americans are dumb enough to buy into this hype.

Chafee is the WACKO! He's a turncoat who couldn't hang with the Republicans and now is taking a shot at them. Having turned Independent shows that he couldn't stand the heat so he got out of the kitchen! What a coward. U.S.A.!!! U.S.A.!!!

Talk about bi-polar. Going from the right to the left and then giving monies to the most liberal politician out there, Obama. Lose an election and turn Independent. Sore loser. No Mr. Chafee, you're the wacko.

Well yeah...it's hard to say how this thing will unfold in November.

Really, I don't think the polls are reflecting the bigger picture.

Sure the news likes to talk about how Palin has energized the GOP base and how large the crowds have been for McCain/Palin speeches... but, none of those folks would support Obama anyway (for whatever reason). And, I don't personally feel there's enough of them compared to the rest of us who realize that we don't need another 4 years of Repubs in WH.

Nobody is reporting about how many of us are turned off by Palin, and throwing support over to Obama...

Really, once the infatuation wears off, and she's finally allowed to do interviews, and she abandons that tired script that's always on the podium flapping in the wind, etc it'll be a different thing.
