Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.
Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.

(CNN) – Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee was known for keeping a low-key profile on Capitol Hill, but the Republican -turned -Independent is making waves with his exceedingly blunt comments on newly-minted Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin:

She's a "cocky wacko," he told a Washington think tank earlier this week.

WATCH: Chafee make the remarks

Chafee, the lone Senate Republican to vote against the Iraq war who endorsed Obama's White House bid earlier this year, told an audience at the New America Foundation in Washington Tuesday that Palin's selection has energized Obama backers.

"People were coming into my office, phone calls were flooding in, e-mails were coming in, 'I just sent money to Obama, I couldn't sleep last night' - from the left. To see this cocky wacko up there," he said.

He also described McCain's candidacy as "lackluster” and described the selection of Palin as a throwing "this firestorm, this tornado, into the whole presidential election."

Chafee, whose father served as senator from Rhode Island from 1976 until his death in 1999, narrowly lost his re-election bid two years ago to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse amid that election cycle’s wave of anti-Republican sentiment.

Chafee made a stir earlier this year when he directly called out Democrats who supported the Iraq war and were now expressing regret for their vote.

“I find it surprising now, in 2008, how many Democrats are running for president after shirking their constitutional duty to check and balance this president,” he wrote in his January 2008 book, “Against the Tide.” “Being wrong about sending Americans to kill and be killed, maim and be maimed, is not like making a punctuation mistake in a highway bill."

Keep it quiet Mr Chafee; you are trying to destroy CNN's poster child. CNN's fascination with Palin has made it difficult for the network to focus on telling us who this woman really is. But then we are talking about the CNN – their bias against Obama is obvious.

OBAMA AND THE RACE CARD   September 12th, 2008 8:49 am ET

As to the issue that Obama is using the "race" card. The man is bi-racial! For the high information voter, he is a person of color as well as Caucasian! For low information voters, he is half black and half white and for the Bubba’s he was a “swirl baby” before he grew up to be “uppity”(arrogant is another favorite word for uppity). Now, hopefully we are all on the same page as to the meaning of bi-racial,

So unless you are a little green alien from Mars(hopefully, a small voting bloc), the cries of racist are not justified.

Joyce in Florida   September 12th, 2008 8:49 am ET

I agree with you Senator Chafee. She is not qualified to be V.P. She is a pit bull in lipstick (LOL). It was her own statement. Every time I see or hear her, it sounds like she is chastising and always using that pointed finger. What's with that?!?! We are not children and do not need to be scolded. She is not capable for this title. She should just stay in Alaska. Democrats will take back the White House. Still a Hillary Clinton supporter who will vote for Obama in November.

jfz   September 12th, 2008 8:49 am ET

Former GOP Senator? What makes anyone think Rhode Island's Lincoln Chafee was EVER a Republican? No need to wonder why he is called a FORMER senator – the voters saw through him.

Rodham Democrat   September 12th, 2008 8:49 am ET

I think the Republicans now have their version of Joe Lieberman.

Lieberman = Democrat turned Independent supporting Republicans
Chafee – Republican turned Independent supporting Democrats

kim,richmond,va   September 12th, 2008 8:49 am ET

He is absolutely right. Watch her family on youtube...the world would take us as a joke if she is allowed in the white house. I can't believe we are still entertaining the thought of her as VP.

Jim   September 12th, 2008 8:48 am ET

Palin is the bridge to nowhere

case closed

I tried to give her a chance and watched her talk to Charles Gibson

you can tell that she is reheared, puppet on a string,

Where is the pitbull with no lipstick.?

I did notice on Charles Gibson ABC worldnews tonight that Palin did not have any stockings on. That tells you how my mind wandered off to somewhere else because she did not hold my interest to listen once I notice the strings attached to her. I finally just turned to TV Off.

Judy Mason   September 12th, 2008 8:48 am ET

Lincoln Chafee hit the nail on the head. She is definitely cocky, and she is definitely a waco. What mother, who claims to have conservative values, parades her unwed pregnant daughter in front of a national audience? If this doesn't denote cocky and waco, what does?

geod   September 12th, 2008 8:47 am ET

I'm commenting after seeing Ms Palin's part interview on ABC News last night. Regrettably, I have to say that I find the prospect of her taking over the presidency even scarier than before. Among other things that bothered me, she casually blurted out once again the BIG lie about Iraq being responsible for 9-11, while talking of her son shipping out for duty. She did it "without blinking".
I can't help feeling a bit sorry for her though. Besides showing McCain's bad judgement, I think his VP pick reveals his callousness and ungentlemanliness, in putting this woman in that position.
Also, what's up with cutting her off in mid-sentence over and over and over!? How demeaning is that? She seemed to have no trouble completing her lines at the convention.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   September 12th, 2008 8:47 am ET

Has Chafee ever met Palin? He shore judged her like he has known her for years.

Independent Women for Obama   September 12th, 2008 8:47 am ET

I could not agree more. Look this person is thrown into the race and we still don't know what her involvement was with the firing of the people in Alaska. Is she going to fire anyone who disagrees with her. She does not respresent most of what America needs.

People please vote wisely. We cannot reward McCain / Bush with what they have done the last 8 years. They are LIEING to the American people and we have had ENOUGH.

Obama / Biden '08

Mike   September 12th, 2008 8:47 am ET

This source is anti McCAin in the first place- what do expect? Maybe CNN can find some more haters out there to interview of either party and print it as news!

Luis Berrios   September 12th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Mr. Chafee could not have described Mrs. Palin any better, a 'cocky wacko'. She came out with a lot of bravado (anybody wants a piece of me out there?!!!) during that interview, with guns blazzing and an 'in your face' attitude with her responses. She certainly responded like a 'Pitbull' that she portrays herself to be, in other words a 'bully'. I can imagine what people that stand in her way get from her, a bunch of tire tracks running over them. There was not one hint of diplomacy or conciliation in her responses. Going to war with Russia? Without blinking she responded 'yes'. NATO or no NATO, diplomacy has ALWAYS been the first and foremost approach to resolve international disputes. This woman is both empty in her knowlege of international affairs and very confrontational/antagonistic, which makes her a very dangerous individual within reach of the Presidency of the United States. She will come out swinging her 'hockey stick' before any words are spoken. I hope voters are beginning to see through the 'smoke screen' that hides Sara Palin's true identity. This is not the type of approach this country needs at this very crucial moment in history, both for our nation and the world, unless voters in this country want a 'senile' President and a gun totting Pitbull as Vicepresident. These are scary times so voters beware and be careful what you ask for (McCain/Palin) for you may get it.

Ken   September 12th, 2008 8:46 am ET

If the shoe fits...

Chris   September 12th, 2008 8:46 am ET

So let me get this straight: Sarah Palin's a "cocky wacko" because she believes in the 2nd Amendment (it's in the Bill of Rights, so feel free to look it up and read it) and is consistent with her church's teaching about the evils of abortion. Really? Well, I guess I'm a cocky wacko, too, along with tens of millions of my fellow Americans.

Sen. Chafee, I think I speak for all Republicans when I say, "Good riddance."

You Obama nuts need to get a grip.

John McPain   September 12th, 2008 8:45 am ET

WHERE IS HER FLAG PIN??????!!!!!!!

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   September 12th, 2008 8:45 am ET

I wonder what he would have to say to Biden. It sounds like he has a problem with anyone that voted for the war.Biden voted for the war. Now that Biden is fallowing Obama maybe Chafee thinks that Biden was borne again.

roberto   September 12th, 2008 8:45 am ET

Nice. He sounds like a very kind guy. Rush to judgement. Keep him off jury duty.

John McPain   September 12th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Bruce   September 12th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Ms Palin's performance in the intereview shows that she has been totally trained by the Neo-con's They are the brains behind the Bush doctrin. They are the ones that think the USA is the big kid on the block and instead of leading by example we can BULLY others to do what we demand.

Once the smoke and dust settle it is clear that it is all about MONEY< POWER< and of course OIL because thta is the sorce of both MONEY AND POWER.

The things Palin said show a direct connection to the BUSH ADMINISTRATION policies. Her statements about Russa will drive us into a new cold war and arms race. Arms race is good for the people that build wepons thye make lots of profit.

Spencer from VA   September 12th, 2008 8:43 am ET

I couldn't agree with the senator any more. She's a nut job.

Frank Ri   September 12th, 2008 8:43 am ET

I also believe Palin is messed up. I constantly hear of things she has done that does not sound like she is a thinker. Yes a true folllower of McCain inher beliefs. Do we need another one in the White House like Cheney who bows down to the Bush. I really cannot figure Palin out and I do believe there is more to her than comes out in the press.

JEFF   September 12th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Where is all the negative coverage on Obama and Bidden? CNN is sooo bias it is disgraceful. Lets look into Obama's past....lets ask him the same questions as the other candidates. But i suppose that would reveal too much.

LANCE COARDILL   September 12th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Cindy   September 12th, 2008 8:42 am ET

I just read some of the other reports and have to add to my previous post.

"Palin didn't hestitate to take VP slot" and "Palin Revealed: Dad says she showed grit early." First, we need a leader who is going to think about serious decisions and not impulsively jump. Next, I am so sick of the "John Wayne – True Grit" style of politics. It has done nothing but get this country into the mess it is in. We have witnessed this type of leadership over the past 8 years and it is not working!

We need a leader with the temperment and intelligence it takes to run the greatest nation on earth. That means no more shooting-from-the-hip actions, instead well, thoughtout actions, directions, plans and policies.

Palin.......just like Bush

And to think that Sarah Palin publicly stated that the US invasion of Iraq was, "a task that is from God"!!!!!!!!!

Since when is God for war? NEVER!!!

It is this holier-than-thou, ultra-right wing, elitist attitude that caused the US to invade IRAQ unnecessarily in the first place. The world sees Palin no different than Bush.

NEWS FLASH!!

IT WAS OBAMA WHO DEMONSTRATED GOOD JUDGMENT ABOUT THE REAL WAR ON TERRORISM.

IT WAS OBAMA WHO HAS BEEN SAYING FOR MANY MONTHS THAT THE US SHOULD REDEPLOY TO AFGHANISTAN. NOT Bush, NOT McCain, no republicans.

AND LO AND BEHOLD.......WHAT IS THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCING THIS WEEK?? Redeployment of troops to Afghanistan.

It is Obama who has the better judgment.

It is Obama that has pushed for change (NOT McCain) since the beginning of the primaries.

And Palin doesn't even know what the Bush Doctrine! Scary....

PA Independent   September 12th, 2008 8:41 am ET

I always liked Chaffee. He is a little unorthodox, but was never afraid to vote against his party when necessary. Liberal republicans are an endangered species these days, unfortunately. The party has been free to swing so far to the right it no longer represents even moderates and doesn't seem to want much to do with them except on Election Day. That's why I'm an Independent now – I'm not really a Dem, but there is no place for me in the modern right-wing cutlure wars of the GOP. "Cocky Wacko" wouldn't have been my choice of words, but props to Chaffee for having the courage to speak his mind. And he's dead-on about the Dems who voted for the war – it's not like war is something to take lightly, or a mistake you can just take back.

Carter Ritchie   September 12th, 2008 8:40 am ET

Can you feel the desperation of the Obama Camp yet? The cool exterior is now chipping away. I guess the number of bitter Americans were a bit larger than originaly calculated in San Francisco.

The funny thing is that attack after attack after attack are leveled at Governor Palin by the Obama Campaign. I guess that the whole competing against McCain thing hasnt worked so well.

Blame the bitter voters, and those wackos that believe that motherhood is not a disqualifier from real opportunity.

Many of us believe that succesful mothers should be recognized for both their commitment to family and their succeses in business and leadership. I guess the Democrats don't. SC Democratic chair, "Palin's primary qualification seems to be that she hasn’t had an abortion."

Yeah, Governor Palin is a wacko......

sharilyn rider   September 12th, 2008 8:40 am ET

This Palin is more scary than GWB. Wake up Americans and see the handwriting on the wall. If you think things are bad now just vote for the Republican ticket and we will really be in trouble. I have voted since 1952 and never in all this time have I seen anything like this election. To put someone like Palin on a national ticket for president is beyond SCARY. She is a time bomb ready to blow up and we would all go with her! She is attractive but dangerous. Just read her comments on international relations. Shoot first, talk later. THINK America......VOTE DEMOCRAT this time!

Mooses, lipstick-pigs, pittbulls ? The Re-publican party sounds more like a darn zoo !!!!

Chuck   September 12th, 2008 8:40 am ET

This man truly speaks the truth. She pretty much dodged every question by Gibson, and answered questions with responses not even related to the question. War with Russia! Senator Chafee, you said it right only you forgot to use one word. RELIGIOUS COCKY WACKO. SSSSCCCCAAAAAARRRRRYYYYY!!!!!!!!

GOBAMA!   September 12th, 2008 8:39 am ET

Thank goodness someone with some experience with the GOP is coming out to state the obvious– Sarah Palin is a wackjob. Beginning with her blatant lies (this soon, too) to the public, she is as inexperienced with foreign policy as it gets, as financially "loose" as any candidate in this race so far, and as ignorant as the sky is wide. Let's hope the "celebrity" experiences a quick downward spiral when the media really starts spreading the word about her inaccurate, corrupt, and spendthrift ways.

Traitor   September 12th, 2008 8:38 am ET

If you are a Republican and think this of another Republican, how can you even say this, and keep this country united. Is it that not what its about. You are so wrong. Does it scare you that a woman can hold her own. Are you use to having women, barefoot and pregnant and in the kitchen. My gosh man get your head out of the sand. We are all equal. She can hold her own. And I have yet to see her say anything inappropriate. Your scared, you must of peed your pants of the thought of Hillary gaining anything in the race. Lets come out as Americans, not racist, female hater, or just plain ignorant.

Jezerie Blango   September 12th, 2008 8:38 am ET

McCain only picked her to win the White House, not change anything. Wake up people, dont you see. We need change, not just a win. I really want to see a women in the White House. Not because what will get the winning ticket, but change America. The world want to see change. People want change not the same old what can get me in the White House. John McCain is a okay guy, but is he ready to change America??? Obama has set out to try to do so. The guy (obama) has been running a campain that is not talking about the McCain personal life or race or whos this and whos that, But what is hurting America. Gas, Food, Energy. Things that matter. Wake up America.

gene   September 12th, 2008 8:38 am ET

Yesterday's interview was the exact reason why Palin shouldn't be anywhere NEAR the White House.

I don't expect her to know the answers to all the questions. I had absolutely NO idea what the Bush Doctrine was.

But... rather than saying "I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the doctrine".. she's just trying to BS her way through... and making herself look like an idiot. Imagine if she was meeting with foreign leaders and doing something like that! Nobody is expected to know everything... but this is not a job you can BS your way through.

Ilene   September 12th, 2008 8:38 am ET

Or maybe the fear of potentially losing the election is masquerading under this Terrifying Fear of Sarah Palin.

Military people do not live for WAR. They live for winning them and keeping them from coming back.

Civilian leaders are inept at starting, managing and ending WAR.
GWB case in point.

John in Ohio   September 12th, 2008 8:35 am ET

Chafee rocks.

Frank   September 12th, 2008 8:34 am ET

This is typical of why nothing ever gets done in Washington, because politicians are only saying crap, due to them being affiliated with an opposing Party so they feel that to make themselves look better and get their 15 minutes of fame, they have to try and trash the opposing party and their designates. When we were children we were taught to not say anything if we don't have anything nice to say but I guess as adults and politicians we can be hypocritical and do the opposite. What does that say to our children who are being told "do as I say and not as I do"! This is one of the main reasons our children are growing up without moral values and are troubled teens. As polititians you must feel great about contributing to the delinquency of minors!
Another thing is the news media as a whole are feeding into this bit with questioning Gov. Palins' experience. Every where you turn the media is directing their main questions to Gov. Palin and others about her experience or what they call lack of, and it is starting to really get annoying. Show me where every time you turn around someone is asking Senator Obama about his experience. First of all he should answer that more than anyone due to the fact that he is running for President and Palin for Vice president so he should be more qualified than her. Where is his executive experience vs. hers; and what because he met some foreign dignitaries in his extended length of public service (what maybe 5 or 6 months)? Palin has been dealing with executives and politicians way longer than Obama, and people think they don't need to ride him about his experience! This is why the U.S. is in this situation today, because every on e listens to the Media instead of thinking for them selves. I quess it is easier and quicker to let others do your thinking for you that way you have more time to be Hypocritical! I also feel this is sexual bias since they are only riding Gov. Palin about the experience aspect and not Obama. Is the news media afraid someone might say something about Obama and end up with a Racial discrimination law suit; or is the media being Politically partisan? Think about it. I was always taught that the media was supposed to be Neutral!

BlackMan4Mac   September 12th, 2008 8:34 am ET

This is news??!! Most Americans do not even know who the failed senator from our smallest state is. He left no mark on the country, being so weak that he has been one of the few incumbent senators to lose a seat in recent years. And we should care what he thinks? And CNN thinks it's newsworthy? Seems like anyone who criticizes Gov. Palin gets coverage on CNN!

He is rigth. But the elections are all about americans. It is not unusual for their heads to be in one place and their hearts in another. They are sentimental folks; so they follow their hearts must of the time and do not mind whinning down the road a few years later. They will vote for the things that are killing them. Kerry and Gore wolud have been far better Presidents than Bush. They preferred Bush because everyone else said he was not good for them and they simply hate outsiders telling them what is good for them even if it is reality. Most americans prefer Mccain/ Palin eventhough the ticket will follow the same policies that have destory their economy.

I find it quite interesting that when Senator Obama announced that he would run for President of the United States, so many Republicans and Independents were saying, "Who is Barack Obama? We aren't familiar enough with him to vote for him." Yet, there has been no one any more unhead of than Sarah Palin, the nerdy Governor of Alaska!!! Go figure! From what I have observed of her on television, she comes across as so flattered to have been chosen as McCain's VEEP, which really makes her a KOOK! LOL!

Any mother who would run for VP has certainly got mental problems or she is not the caring mother she claims to be. When you have a baby who is going to be a full time mother's responsibility how can she possibly leave him to travel to different countries and leave him in the care of her family or hired help. My daughter has a child with a disease that has him as a four year old for the rest of his life. She is a wonderful and caring Mom and would never abandon him to build her ego.

Palin, well she has already started WWIII it seems. Sorry but Georgia is not worth killing 150 million Americans and 200 million Russians. Bold words from someone who is not even Vice President. Also it was funny that she add to add anything after Gibson asked her "have you ever met another head of state". Why can't the answer be just plain no! Not, No but if you look into history you will find that other VP have not either....now give me a break! Yes all former VP's had already met at least one head of state. Matt Damon is right, if the voters of Ohio, Indiana and Virginia cant see through all the GOP shams then something is terribly wrong with us, and maybe we do need to be nuked off the planet.

Bridget   September 12th, 2008 8:27 am ET

The fact that she holds naive and extremist views (sanctions for Russia...are you KIDDING me? They are a superpower just like us, lady, so get used to it) is enough for me not to vote for her. Yes, she is frightening.

Has anyone asked her to explain the difference between Sunni and Shiite, yet? I'm sincerely hoping that is a debate question!

I have listened various time to both candidates. I have tried to deal with Mr Mccain and all of his accomplishements. But I really feel
good about the insight that Mr Obama has displayed. He has shown some much more feeling in his speech's . I have no doubt that Mr Obama will at lease not get into the White House just to be there.

Looks like anytime anyone from any party disagrees with someone, out come the name calling, defamatory labels that does nothing but shows the depth of ignorance. I hope McCain/Palin wins and changes the good old boy system in Washington starting with those who's been in there the longest, because they will exposed as being so out of touch from main stream America. its time to get people in office that do not put party loyalty first, but lead with principle.

Chafee is not in office and is jealous of anyone who is now popular!!!
Where was he in the 90's when Kopechne killer Kennedy , Monica's boyfriend, Reno , and a host of other Libs ruined US Army capabilites, eviscerated the CIA, and decided that 125% home loans were OK????The 90's need to be examined and these libs will not come out as world savers-they left a pile of crap for US to deal with (home loan crisis, weak military , frustrated crime fighters, weak immigration policy, no energy policy)-chafee is not around any more and should not influence what is going on right now!!!!!!!!!!

PEOPLE WAKE UP   September 12th, 2008 8:20 am ET

Hmmmmmmm me think that Mr Chafee has a point.......

Tony   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

Lone Republican to vote against the Iraq war? Ummm, no .... I pretty sure Ron Paul voted agaisnt the Iraq war as well. He's "called out" Democrats who supported the Iraq war then changed their minds when they realized it was political "oopsie" yet supports Obama? Oy. If anyone is a "cocky wacko" (they probably are all actually) it's Chafee!

Anonymous   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

Hmmm, pot calling the kettle black. No pun intended.

Besides, most men immediately say a woman is crazy to discredit her. Obama has no experience and he is where he is because white men put him there to oppose a more "dangerous" female. Clinton. Well, now the Democrats have to deal with Palin. It's the DNC's own fault. Dummies.

Charles Shaw Liverpool, NY   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

I believe the sen. Chaffee is just as much part of the problem with our Big Socialist Government as any other person working for one of the two major parties today. These two parties have lost their way in serving the Constitution of America, something they have sworn to up hold. Well after over 35 years of my voting experence, I'm not going to be fooled again!
This fall I'm voting for my Freedom and Liberty, I'm voting for Bob Barr and the Libertarian Party. Join me in removing these criminals from office, join me as we restore the rule of law, a return to what the founding father's intended when they wrote our Constitution.

Betsy   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

It's a good thing Palin is at the BOTTOM of the ticket. Now, can we talk about issues that REALLY concern Americans?

* McCain voted AGAINST Violence Against Women Act

* McCain voted AGAINST Title X Womens Health Care Services

* McCain voted AGAINST Children's Health Insurance Program-SCHIP

* McCain voted AGAINST aid to Children of Domestic Violence

* McCain voted AGAINST Emergency Funding for Victims of Hurricane Katrina

* McCain voted AGAINST Funding Law Enforcement

* McCain wants to bring back the DRAFT

* McCain voted AGAINST GI Bill

* McCain voted AGAINST Funding VA for Vets

* McCain voted AGAINST Funding Military Equipment Shortages in Iraq

* Palin continues to LIE about the bridge. Palin SUPPORTED the bridge, TOOK THE MONEY for the bridge, KEPT THE MONEY for the bridge and SPENT THE MONEY for the bridge.

* Palin AND her husband AND her children BILLED the taxpayers of Alaska, $16,000.00 so the Palin's could have Family Time.

* Other than scripted interviews that have clearly been EDITED, Palin REFUSES to answer questions from reporters. In fact, Palin REFUSES to answer reporter's questions on her plane... SUSPICIOUS?????!!!!!! ...

Will Palin EVER answer questions from reporterS (plural) like say from behind a podium?

thomas   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

Palin's lack of knowledge of current affairs was clearly evident during her interview with Charles Gibson. He failed to press her on any issue except the Bush doctrine and she fumbled that badly. For Guiliaini to show up on MSNBC this morning praising her performance was unbelievable. It appears as if he was are blinded by "hope". Fame is just manic curiosity and it is always fleeting.

Jim   September 12th, 2008 8:19 am ET

She's one big gimmick, and it's really REALLY sad some people can't see that like the good little republican sheep they are.

Marie   September 12th, 2008 8:18 am ET

After watching the first part of her interview I have to correct Mr. Chafee.

Sarah Palin is a "nervous looking cocky wacko". She scares the heck out of me. She anything but typical or like you and I.

ep   September 12th, 2008 8:18 am ET

About sums it up. The only thing Palin brings to this ticket is temporary excitement where there was none. Once you start listening to what she has to say and the way she says it, all excitement gets extinguished.

Patty   September 12th, 2008 8:18 am ET

He might be more credible if he actually knew her and weren't already committed to BO. Just another example of the BO panic machine trying to neutralize her postive effect.

Barry   September 12th, 2008 8:18 am ET

Senator Chafee is right on the mark. Palin's interview with Charlie Gibson began to reveal what many people already suspected – a former Mayor of a little town (I was one myself) and a 20 month Governor who is woefully inadequate for public office. What is frightening is that if McCain were elected, she would be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. I need not point out that McCain is 72 and has had cancer four times.

Her performance in the interview was pathetic. She did not know what the "Bush Doctrine" was, has traveled to (ready?), Canada, Mexico, and one junket to Kuwait. She was ready to engage in war with Russia over Georgia (not our State). She also opposed big countries attacking little ones (does anyone remember Iraq?).

Her selection reveals a dangerously flawed McCain – one who puts politics and his own burning ambition above the country. I fervently hope people can put aside their red/blue rhetoric and look at what could happen to the USA if Palin ever got a real position of power.

For once, lets get beyond the politics of personality (who we like and do not like) and look at what is good for the US and everyone in it.

sandra   September 12th, 2008 8:17 am ET

I was thinking that Mr Chafee was ot the first to see this reality, we all intelligent people can see the inaecuate, poor choice is made by taking in concideration Palin as the person to one day lead this country, to disaster yes!

teresa   September 12th, 2008 8:17 am ET

Well, we definitely need someone who actually knows they can help lead a country...Also, he seems like someone that doesn't know his position. Let's send him to the front lines next time terrorists attack this country and watch him wet his pants!

Ron L   September 12th, 2008 8:15 am ET

First and foremost the use of the term "cocky wacko" is inappropiate. It only inflames people who are attepting to defend her being choosen for such an important position as V.P. when they KNOW deep down inside she is not knowledgable enough. I say this with no malice. it is simply a statement of fact. I looked at her interview on ABC twice yesterday and what I saw was a an intelligent person, who MAY one day be a very ready for such an importatan position in our government ..but not now!!
If you listened to the answers given, and look closely in her eyes as she answered. You can hear and see she is in over her head. EVERYONE needs to view this for what it is. This is a selection for someone who will be the 2nd most important person in the country. John McCain is 72, how many people who are reading this right now have witnessed or heard about a friend or loved one that was in their 70's that was FINE one day and the next they have had a stroke or some other unexpected serious illness.
This is not about gender, race, or Party. This is about one thing and one thing alone..IS SARAH PALIN well-rounded and versed enough to actullay SIT in the chair of the President in the event Sen. McCain was elected and taken ill or worst in the first year of his adminstration. The answer ( in my opinion) is NO!
AMERICA this is another WAKE UP call. This is VERY SERIOUS!! I am not asking you to agree with me, I am BEGGING you to not listen to the hype. Just listen to her interview and FORGET she is both a women or Republican and ask yourself DOES SHE sound like someone ready to be President in a less than a years time?? This is as REAL as it gets. Vote with your brain, not your heart!

New Ole   September 12th, 2008 8:15 am ET

Palin is clueless about everything and knew so little and what she did know you could tell was straight from a tutored script. OMG! this is frightening.! Keep talking Sarah so the world will know your true colors.

She may be a 'cocky wacko' but at least she's not a community organizer!

But really, this is one of the most important elections in the US History. The economy is in a free fall, and we are on the verge of war with at least five countries. It is absolutely imperative that we see what our candidates are made of before we make a decision.

Does it mean that she changes her opinion like the weather ????

Gary Meyer   September 12th, 2008 8:12 am ET

Senator Obama seems pretty upset that Senator McCain and the Republican party have chosen to run their campaign also on change.
Senator Obama insist that Senator McCain would be just another 4 years of President Bush's policies.

As an independent , I found myself closely following both the Democratic and the Republican conventions. I found that both Senator Obama, and Senator McCain have different approaches to solving the issues that face our great nation.

When I hear the word, "Change" from Senator Obama, I hear about changes to policies that didn't work for the Bush administration.
When I hear the word, "Change" from Senator McCain, I hear changes to the old policies of President Bush's administration, but the biggest and most important part of Senator McCain's change is " TO SHAKE UP WASHINGTON".

This phrase is an important one, because whoever wins the presidency, is going to have to reach across party lines to get things accomplished. Senator McCain being refeerred to as a "Maverick" can do just that, along with the help of his running mate Sarah Palin.

I heard Senator McCain say " I will choose members of my cabinet with the most experience in their fields, whether they're Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, whomever wants to reach across, and be a part of rebuilding politics in America."

I have to say, to see Democrats and Republicans working side by side, under a McCain administration is, "REAL CHANGE".

Social Libertarian in NC   September 12th, 2008 8:12 am ET

I'm so glad that someone on Obama's side has had the balls to call Palin out as what she really is!!!

Help Us ALL!!   September 12th, 2008 8:12 am ET

Did anyone read the Palin interview response on Russia??

What ever happened to just talking and negotiating with Russia instead of pissing them off by putting up sanctions? Doesnt anyone see that the Republican stance on this just makes the other country angry and doesnt solve a thing???

And if she thinks that we can take a strong upper hand with Russia and it work she is WACKO!! Russia is hard to get along with. They are strong willed and Stubborn.

This is what Obama wants to change... the way the Republicans have handled Foreign relations by trying to grab the other countries arm and MAKE them do what we want or Else!! IT doesnt work!! No wonder we have problems with other countries HATING us!!

She doesnt have a clue to what is going on. She doesnt know what she is doing!! She has the most potential of being the actual President of the USA and its SCARY!

That is like putting my teenage daughter in the Presidential Seat.

Marie N   September 12th, 2008 8:11 am ET

I agree with the former Senator. There's something disturbing about this woman who could not even tell Gibson what she thought about the Bush Doctrine as it has become known regarding preemptive strikes. Even scarier is her statement of "whatever it takes" sounds like a she thinks we have a blank check on what we are allowed to do in order to catch the terrorists responsible for 9/11. I wonder if the international community will allow McCain and Palin to cash those checks or tell them that blank check will not be honored by the international community. You see...the EU and other nations who have been around for several hundreds of years longer that we have...know what an overconfident rookie can do to international stability. They have seen first hand what leaders with a shoot first, ask questions later mentality can do to the world. They have had to live with it for several generations. Now we have Venezuela, Bolivia, Iran, North Korea, Russia and every other country who might have had doubts about our desire to invade their borders on high alert. Palin should really read "How to win friends and influence people" before the rest of our potential enemies think about euthanizing us like they do "pit bulls" who cannot be controled by their owners.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   September 12th, 2008 8:11 am ET

Given that he hasn't seen eye to eye with the Bush administration, this isn't a big surprise that he doesn't like her. There must be some great concern that he has to say something this strongly worded. I can honestly see harsh words for Palin also since she doesn't seem to understand much other than ideology.

E-S   September 12th, 2008 8:11 am ET

I am ashamed to have Senators of this country use immature, comments about other Americans.

Whether you agree with Palin or not....it does not give you the right to become a third grader in a Senate office (even if he is not in office which i hope is the case)!!!!!!

Palin is a woman with views of positivity to turn this country around....just as Biden, Obama, and McCain!!

We are one!!! With different views, of course but that does not give anybody to right to insult ANYONE!!!!!

rmathis   September 12th, 2008 8:10 am ET

"Cocky Wacko" is exactly what Palin is and John McCain is an idiot for putting our country at risk by selecting this hot head. What is even more amazing is that after years of being picked to pieces by the the public and still earning over 18 million votes in the primaries, some say they don't know enough about Obama. Palin has been hiding behind John McCain for the last two weeks and has shown no ability to handle the media or anyone else for that matter, and people are ready to give her access to the White House? I don't know how Obama holds his tongue regarding these obvious double standards. Didn't I see an interview that Sarah Palin gave where she asked "what does the V.P. do anyway?" This is scary. Come on people, wake up and smell the set up. Go Chafee for calling it like it is!!
Obama/Biden '08

carlo   September 12th, 2008 8:10 am ET

She's not a cocky wacko. She is, however, an idiot. She flubbed an interview with the "nicest man in America" Charles Gibson. She didn't even know what the Bush doctrine is. That's sad. I'm not running for President or vice-president and I know what the Bush doctrine is.

Smart man. I watched her "interview" last night. Not only is she a wacko, but she appears to be angry. She got po'd a few times at Gibson.

I liked this part of the interview:

Gibson: "Are you ready to handle foreign policy of the United States"

Palin: "Well, you can actually see Russia from Alaska"

beevee   September 12th, 2008 8:08 am ET

I totally agree with him after listening to the bits and pieces of her interview with Gibson.

Leave it to a senator from Rhode Island to speak the truth- one thing I give to that state, it's people don't mince words and they call it like they see it! Keep speaking your mind Mr. Chafee... America truly needs to wake up and smell the coffee! A McCain/Palin ticket is no more than 4 more years of what we have now- and that is absolutely no change for the better...

Edwin, Fayetteville, NC   September 12th, 2008 8:06 am ET

He is not being sexist, he just sees Palin for who she really is someone who is not ready and will lead the country the wrong way. Even more damage will be done to our economy and national security if the McCain/Palin ticket gets in.

Sean   September 12th, 2008 8:06 am ET

Even moderate Republicans realize what a nutjob Palin is.

Reba   September 12th, 2008 8:06 am ET

Well this Palin is someone who deeply believes in her "God". I along with others have grave concerns and it scares that "god" would be her decision maker instead of common sense decisions. She is a candidate that I wouldn't trust because she knows nothing but shooting moose, getting into unethical behavior as demonstrated in her stints by firing people in her way, and charging her governmental function in staying home while taxpayers flip the bill while she was nesting at home. We in DC call that grounds for dismissal because of her unethical and darn right cheating the state of Alaska by doing fragulent behavior. If it had been little "joe smo" they would of been fired. She figures she is above the "law".As for McCain in picking a candidate just to please the "christian right & the insecure women out there" who think they were left out because they didn't have a woman in the VP slot is darn right stupid. Women wake up and smell the coffee! For those women who want this unprofessional person in the white house playing the "soccer mom" "gun totting moose killer" of animals in the white house is simply "NUTS"

jeanette   September 12th, 2008 8:06 am ET

Jamey Campbell   September 12th, 2008 8:05 am ET

Cocky (adjective) – arrogant, boldly or brashly self-confident, condescending to community organizers.

Wacko (noun) – a person who is wacky, describes self as pitbull with lipstick, or thinks selling a plane on ebay means effective government.

Palintologist (noun) – a person who studies cocky wackos.

Dianne   September 12th, 2008 8:02 am ET

Is this really necessary for this electin? How many other derogatory terms, that bare no merit, wil be slung at Gov. Palin?

Shouldn't we get back to the issues and investigate each candidate on thier experience, knowledge and ability?

Hands down, both McCain and Palin's experience, proven abilities and achieved outcomes far exceeds anything that Obama has done during his 143 days in the Senate.

Let's take the emotions out of this election and elect the most qualified candidate.

What will be achieved by electing a candidate soley on the color of his skin? Isn't that in and by itself racism? I heard a talk on NPR yesterday and the rational given for electing Obama was; if he is elected then the white people will no longer be able to repress us, white people are secretly trying to make him fail, if he is elected then it will be okay for my black son to date a white person, and it was even said that they did not care about his shortcomings because no other black man had gotten this far and he deserves it on that premise alone."

Please start to cover this election fairly and ask the same questions from both sides, report positive things about both sides and show the American public that you are able to be true professional journalist.

scoot   September 12th, 2008 8:01 am ET

notice the word FORMER Sen.

Belinda   September 12th, 2008 8:01 am ET

I just want us to get back to the issues. I am for Obama because he cares about the things I care about. Education for all who want it, better schools, getting Americans involved in shaping and changing our communities, health care. etc.

I pray that we as Americans do not get so naive and cocky to think that no one can touch us. People don't want to hear it, but the rest of the world likes Obama, McCain is another Bush to them, and they really don't want that. People have to understand that our President of the US, does not only represent the US, but other countries.

Our country needs to get back to what's important and show each other that we care. We shouldn't need a 911 event to make us wake up. I feel like we have forgotten that this happened anyway.

chris   September 12th, 2008 8:01 am ET

thats the truth..this woman is cracked.

xddy4u   September 12th, 2008 8:00 am ET

Senator Chafee, you got that right. The woman is way over her head. Why should we have to baby sit a potential VP, who will be a heart beat from the oval office when we don't have to. We don't have to elect an ill equip VP into office. We can elect a tried and proven candidate, like Joe Biden who has been in many political battles in the Senate. That's who will have Obama's back, we don't have to soft peddle Biden. On the other hand, look at who will have McCain's back, a person that doesn't know the difference between the House and the Senate. Political god help us.

Fighting for Obama Since he is too political correct!   September 12th, 2008 8:00 am ET

My sentiments exactly. Last night Palin sounded like she memorized her answers based on key words when Charlie Gibson Interviewed her. I was not impressed. She is not the one to lead this country if she needs to take over the white house. May God help us all.

Alice Newman Center Harbor NH   September 12th, 2008 8:00 am ET

He's only saying what a lot of people are thinking. Watch the McCain surrogates come out of the woodwork, now.

When valid questions are considered "bashing" and when McCain can use the "pig in lipstick" quote about Hillary and Obama can't say the same about McCain's ideas .... then you know we are in scary territory.

Either Palin can run at the national level, warts and all or McCain can be the sugar-Daddy and protect his little girl. They can't have it both ways.

Interesting the Palin didn't hesitate to call Hillary a whiner – and accuse her of playing the gender card...

Craig from Rockford   September 12th, 2008 8:00 am ET

McCain definitely enegrized a base when he picked Palin... the Democratic base. i wasn't involved at all in Obama's campaign until he picked this antagonistic, divisive woman. I didn't think McCain was that bad... but now I have something to work AGAINST.

Toby   September 12th, 2008 7:56 am ET

Agreed. The sad part is that McCain didn't just throw her into the presidential race, he is subjecting the country to the rule of this cocky wacko. All the time he says she has "military experience" (as governor who never issued one order?), "diplomatic experience" (by virtue of living near Siberia??), and "energy expertise" (by supporting drilling???). Just picture her in a group of world leaders discussing important issues. This is what McCain thinks makes a good president? Unfortunately, redneck America probably thinks so too.

Well said. I love it when people tell the truth. I think he may have held back a bit though.

Vicki K   September 12th, 2008 7:55 am ET

Remember Terry Schiavo politics? If not, you will with Palin.

Sue in MI   September 12th, 2008 7:55 am ET

Palin said that we have the right to invade a sovereign nation without their permission. Do they have the same right? World War Three?

Kevin   September 12th, 2008 7:55 am ET

The selection of Palin may have energized Borama supporters but nothing like it's energized the entire Republican base and many Independants who were looking for something they could believe in; proud Sarah Palin was choses as the V.P. candidate.

Paul Thompson   September 12th, 2008 7:55 am ET

I'm a democrat. And I don't believe that making people mad about our country is a good strategy or will ever result in any thing good.

You need to get it....less than 50% of us 'hate' this country.

It's not perfect...but it's not despicable.

Matto   September 12th, 2008 7:55 am ET

this woman did not even know what the bush doctrine was.How can people vote for this woman reguardless of what mccain does.Picking her was clearly a bad political choice. Why wasnt she pressed on not knowing something as simple as the bush doctrine? And she is suppose to be a heart beataway from the oldest presidential candidate in history.

Juan Grain   September 12th, 2008 7:54 am ET

No she's not. She is a cocky whacko that has not a clue about the job of President or Vice President. And this country is headed for some terible times if they get into the white house. Fight with the Russians. with what Nukes! Because our military is not in a position to go there right now. Americans need to wake the hell up and realize that this is not a game of red states and blue states. It is about competence. and McCain Palin is more of the same incompetence that got us here in the first place. She does not even know what the Bush doctrine is. Give me a break, she has not a clue and i sure as hell do not want her to have the nuclear codes.

From abroad   September 12th, 2008 7:54 am ET

Please, please, dear Americans don't vote with your heart, please don't vote another pair of relgious fanatics to the Whitehouse. The world begs You. It is apparent that new heights of double standards are being set by the republicans (abortion, NRA, Palin can't even get her own daughter to live by the "high moral" and so on)....

Michelle   September 12th, 2008 7:54 am ET

She is scary.

I hope Obama and his people take it easy on her, she was ill prepared for the interview. I think we Americans can make up our own minds, even I knew the Bush Doctrine.

The Light   September 12th, 2008 7:52 am ET

I completely agree with Sen. Chafee! She feels that it's necessary to start messing around with Russia???? I'm all for protecting our allies and ourselves, but you can't really do that when you're in support of an unjustified war that we are still in! If we piss off too many Russias, Chinas, and N. Koreas, our little allies will not be able to help us. GOD HELP US ALL!!!

RJ show me state   September 12th, 2008 7:51 am ET

Palin may have glitter and shine, but most people can (we hope) realise she does not have the experince to deal with the world issues if mc cain becomes unable to command our country. they say obama doesn't have the experience. but he does have the education and wisdom and understanding that it will take a world effort to repair our country and outher countrys as well. this country will become a devided country for a very long time if mc cain becomes presendent. since 70% of the world chooses obama to be our leader. see the point in who has the skill and wisdom to handle the world affairs. is obama GO OBAMA yes we can

John A. Saah   September 12th, 2008 7:51 am ET

As a white American male, I agree with Senator Chafee on both issues!

He courageously did the right thing and voted against the illegal Iraq invasion in 2003 (compared to all of his fellow Republicans, and Hillary) and he has publicly come out against Sarah Palin, the redneck Walmart mom !

Palin is nothing because she came from nothing. She is one of the those angry whites living in the middle of nowhere who feels "entitled" to a better life without working hard for it. And if they don't live a comfortable life, they go back to guns and religion as a backup!

Undecided....   September 12th, 2008 7:50 am ET

Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee...Former....Go home, eat lobster..do whatever you do.

Palin is a good choice. McCain needed some additional fire. When do we quit listening to all of these X office holders and and start listening to the candidates and what they are going to do?

'Bill Clinton says Obama wins big!" Wow really? I am SO surprisd at that. All should shut up and let us hear the peple who will be running this country instead of the ones who have had thier chance.

Brandon   September 12th, 2008 7:50 am ET

I agree with his comments. Palin seems too good to be true for Republicans. She's like the wolf in sheeps clothing, of the fairy tales and cartoons. She could potentially be something that McCain will regret choosing. Shes already in more favor than he is for her controversy. She obviously is very cocky for her comments of Obama and Biden, and she was chosen just recently. I can't wait to see McCain and Palin lose so she can shut her mouth.

Bruce   September 12th, 2008 7:49 am ET

Durning her first and I have heard last interview Palin said something that TIEs her and McCain directly to BUSH. She was talking abut the BUSH DOCTRIN and pre-emtive strikes. For those that do not remember or what to forget that is what got the USA into Iraq. It is a dangerous concept. It means if you THINK someone MIGHT attack you then itis ok to attack first.

That sounds good if you only look at it from one side. But that same idea supports Russa's action in Geroga. The action that she is so upset about. That is WHY SHE IS SO DANGEROUS.

THAT IS WHY they are not change they are MORE OF THE SAME MORE WAR

JMarie   September 12th, 2008 7:49 am ET

Nice. love the unsubstantiated remarks with a caustic label leading the way.

Frankly, most politicians are a bead off normal...you'd have to be to subject yourself to the scrutiny of media and the out-of-context firestorm over even the smallest thing.

Mike   September 12th, 2008 7:49 am ET

He is right on both counts. The Republican 'Truth Squads' are trying to deny the True Story of the Palin book banning incident but the truth is that it did occur. A newly elected Palin feeling the Raw Unlimited Power of a tiny town Mayor. Approached the Wasilla town librarian to "Discuss Banning" certain books objected to by Palins extreme pentacostal Church. This is a Church that says the World will soon be Destroyed but that God will spare Alaska as a Divine Christian refuge.
A Church that has Preached that Terrorism is God's punishment for Jew's disbelief and that Critics of Bush are going to Hell. Well the Librarian of course refused to Ban Books and Palin fired her. This puts Palin in the same company of Adolf Hitler and the Spanish Inquisition. Should Palin stumble into the Presidency. Will Palin call her opponants Witches? The GOP already suggests critics of Palin are evil Wolves. If Reagan could see what mcBush has bone to the GOP he would spin around in his grave.

Mrs. Betty Wolff   September 12th, 2008 7:46 am ET

It scares me to death to think this woman could end up running our country! Please America, see past all the smoke & mirror "hockey mom" superficiality! This woman is downright scary; from her book bans at libraries to her despotism and dreadful environmental record. I pray this ticket is not elected.

Saved   September 12th, 2008 7:46 am ET

Palin is a nut waiting to crack – this women has no place in America politics let alone the White House.

kB   September 12th, 2008 7:46 am ET

Thank God! Someone sees her for what she is.......

Carrie   September 12th, 2008 7:45 am ET

Ouch....My goodness...Chafee's remarks are very blunt. But the real test here is," Can she take this kind of criticism?" He will certainly be criticized for being so blunt. Do you think he will be called sexist, or disgruntled, or bitter?? The barracuda/pit bull will pucker up to the camera with her lipstick and probably say, "Don't pick on me." Or can she teleprompt her way out of this one. She better run to McBush and Uncle Rove right now for advice.

Carmen   September 12th, 2008 7:45 am ET

I agree with the cocky wacko after looking at her interview last night. Republ needs to ditch her now.

Sandy - PA   September 12th, 2008 7:44 am ET

'Cocky Whacko' doesn't begin to describe her accurately. This is an insult to cocky whackos everywhere.

valerie   September 12th, 2008 7:44 am ET

Thank you. It's nice to know that there are others out there who think she's a pyscho nutjob.

J. Sully, New York   September 12th, 2008 7:43 am ET

Chafee is right! I agree wholeheartedly. When I heard McSame picked Palin, I was shocked. The repubs pick their running mates haphazardly just like they voted for this unwarranted war. Again, the repubs are trying to sell America a stale phony bill of goods.

Sue   September 12th, 2008 7:42 am ET

How refreshing to see an honest evaluation of this potential VP. She will never get a vote from this former Hillary supporter. She is as scarey as it gets and we need to take off the kid gloves and start dealing with this wack-job before it is too late.

Rivkah Rubinstein   September 12th, 2008 7:41 am ET

Ex- senator sure to make headlines by tagging on to Palin's coat tails. But, does he have an original thought, or is he saying anything that rational folks want to hear? Liberals are generous only with their insults and other people's money!

Tom   September 12th, 2008 7:41 am ET

It just goes to show – Democrats are scared. Palin has energized the Republican party, and now the issue is very much in doubt for Obama.

It's really sad to see everyone attack Palin. This race has been divisive enough, but Democrats and Republicans keep throwing grenades.

I've had enough with the personality attacks. If you think Obama has experience enough to be President, then Palin does to. If you think Palin has experience enough, then Obama does too.

Let's get past this ridiculous rhetoric and personal attacks and get BACK ON THE ISSUES!!!

Karyn   September 12th, 2008 7:41 am ET

I bet he's right about her. She seems to be a hypocrite to me. She's pro life, but pro gun law. Doesn't she realize that because of the gun law that allows people to own guns, there higher crime rate in America? Incidents such as school shootings happens because of easy access guns. She is for teenage abstenance, but her daughter is pregnant. I think people that are energized by her are probably those that like guns and war like she does.

Alex   September 12th, 2008 7:41 am ET

Cocky wacko are the exact words that one of my colleagues uses to describe Palin. Chafee hit the nail on the head.

lee   September 12th, 2008 7:40 am ET

If Senator Lincoln Chafee uses that strong description of Palin, then I believe him! Add his comments to Noonan's and Murphy's and it's conclusive.
How many women that "relate" to Palin have skinned a moose? Or hope to someday? They are pretty weird, too.

Anonymous   September 12th, 2008 7:39 am ET

I bekieve this X- Senator is full of sour grapes.

Palin is Scary   September 12th, 2008 7:39 am ET

He's right! She is cocky and trying to be more than she is ever qualified to be. Gotta love the way she dodges National Security questions in the latest interview. No way this pair gets in the oval office.

Chris   September 12th, 2008 7:39 am ET

"ex senator" so credible? Give me a break. This is just another Obama supporter wanting to knock Palin down.

James From Chicago   September 12th, 2008 7:35 am ET

Chaffee hit the nail on the head.Palin is a WACKO.All you had to do is
listen to her interview. She didn't have a clue of what she was talking about.

williefloyd   September 12th, 2008 7:34 am ET

Lots of people are probably losing sleep over the prospect of MCain and his "lame duck" running mate. The two of them in the White House would give anyone "nightmares" if they were lucky enough to fall asleep.

America, wake up, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! No more Repubs.

OBAMA/BIDEN

Alabama   September 12th, 2008 7:34 am ET

Pft, this hardly seems newsworthy. Obviously, Palin is quite the wacko! Yes, lets support her in this "holy war"! Lets finish God's work in Iraq! Lets ALL ask if we can ban books from being at libraries! Lets make sure we all believe that Alaska is the holy land the good Evangelical Christians will flock to when we destroy the earth... or whatever that was about! :)

(I don't necessarily totally support either McCain or Obama, by the way. I just kinda don't want another psycho possibly running the country...)

...wacko? Yeeeeeah, a little.

Betsy   September 12th, 2008 7:33 am ET

"Cocky wacko." I sure hope it becomes a popular catchphrase, cuz this woman scares the bejeezus outta me. Thanks Senator Chafee!

Joe - Wilmington, DE   September 12th, 2008 7:33 am ET

A-la Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin places her need for power over the needs of the nation and, I would say, her family too.

Unlike Hillary Clinton, she is not articulate and as far as I can see not highly intelligent.

America and the world deserve much better.

dee   September 12th, 2008 7:33 am ET

this type of statement should be let known more openly to the american community.

Jim   September 12th, 2008 7:33 am ET

In Rhode Island Chaffee has been described as “goofy “ a moniker that suits him well. That’s why he is “former senator “ Chaffee.

Recoss   September 12th, 2008 7:32 am ET

Maddie, Hartford, Ct.   September 12th, 2008 7:32 am ET

Took a deep breath and watched Gibson's interview last night. This is a joke....right? The registered, thinking Republicans I know have either decided not to vote or are voting for Obama.

Bob   September 12th, 2008 7:31 am ET

Well, she's at least a liar if not a wacko. All that nonsense about telling Congress "no thanks" on the "bridge to nowhere." Wonder if she's repeated that lie enough that she now believes it really happened.

Luis   September 12th, 2008 7:29 am ET

I was watching a video of Matt Dammon talking about how ready or experience was Gov Sarah Palin. He siad at the moment of a serious issuelike facing Vladimir Putin, she won't have the experience to handle this. I think neither candidate Obama or Palin has enought foreign policy experience to handle alone any situation.

Lets remember that there are many people in Washington that will advice the President or Vice President on what steps or measures to take. the cabinet, advisors, senators, armed forces, the ex-Presidents.

So please Matt don't be so naive. Look at the Iraq war we went there after the so called intelligence was given, the congress said yes!! let's go!! then the President declared the state of war.

Lets just vote for the candidate that will bring solutions and talk how to solve all the problems we have at home.

CAL   September 12th, 2008 7:29 am ET

Three negative articles this am re Gov. Palin including this idiot from nowehere - a former senator of RI - calling the nominee a wacko. Way to go with your fair coverage CNN. I am still waiting for the piece on Joe Biden's extraordinary ability to vote the wrong way on military/foreign policy issues over the three decades he has served.

EBC   September 12th, 2008 7:28 am ET

I watched Gov. Sarah Palin's interview with Gilbson and I found her to be very well rehearsed. In a couple of questions like when she was asked about the Bush Doctrine, she had this blank look on her face for about 60 seconds, then she asked Gibson "what do you mean Charlie?". It was CLEAR that Gov. Palin did NOT know the answer and fumbling.

There was another question where re repeated the same answer 4-5 times, but it wasn't the answer to the question regarding attacking Pakistan without permission.

I find these revelation VERY DISTURBING. It just proves that Gov. Palin is clueless when it comes to our foreign policies. She is NOT MATCH for Putin and Russia or Georgia. AND let's not even forget Pakistan and Iran. They are going to EAT her up as President!! China is going to look at Gov. Palin as nothing but a JOKE, they are just going to ignore her all together.

THIS IS SERIOUS FOLKS, you have a Republican VP candidate who is being TAUGHT an accelerated "foreign and national" policies during and ELECTION, WHAT does that say about your John McCain.

DO YOU HONESTLY WANT TO PUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR CHILDREN IN THE HANDS OF GOV. SARAH PALIN'S 'VP IIN TRAINING"???? GET OUTTA HERE!!!

Elizabeth   September 12th, 2008 7:27 am ET

Well, duh! The lady is nuts. McCain/Palin sound more extreme than Bush/Cheney. Listening to her interview with Charlie Gibson confirms this.

US   September 12th, 2008 7:26 am ET

"Cocky Wacko" = prefect description

Matt   September 12th, 2008 7:24 am ET

Palin's narrow world view is very, very dangerous, not only for America but for the whole world! Be concerned: Such falcons can cause big wars!

Lisa H   September 12th, 2008 7:23 am ET

I live in Rhode Island, and let me tell you...Senator Chafee is a joke here, people make fun of him, his absolute stupidity, so who cares what he says or thinks...we don't.

Carol   September 12th, 2008 7:23 am ET

Sarah Palin does come across as very caustic brash lady with a voice that really grates on your nerves.
I must admit she with her very caustic manner can really fire up the Republicans as long as she is READING and REPEATING the same old junk over and over and over again!!!!
It's fine to go out there, but please give us a break and say something of SUBSTANCE for a change.... this same old stuff is really wearing very thin.
Oh, by the way in the short clip with Charles Gibson when asked about Russia.....did she say we could go to WAR!!!! Sound familiar!!
America, if you can't see by now that this laughable McPalin ticket will be having us involved in YET MORE wars at the drop of a hat we just cannot let this happen again.
This election is far too important to let these two "war mongers" get anywhere near the White House.

William   September 12th, 2008 7:22 am ET

Palin a "Cocky Wacko"? Chafee certainly is the pot calling the kettle black. They don't come any more loonier than Lincoln.

Roger   September 12th, 2008 7:22 am ET

"Energized Obama backers", but also energized independants and former Hillary supporters. McCain is ahead of Obama now in the polls.

Rayk   September 12th, 2008 7:20 am ET

Too Late for Chafee. He is another clear illustration as to why we need to keep on looking for 'new' blood for DC. Palin is a refreshing choice. The USA outside of DC has MUCH to offer and thank goodness for that.

Rodney Franklin   September 12th, 2008 7:19 am ET

There's a reason why he's "Former" Rhode Island Sen...The people got smart.

If it was up to him and his lineage, we would still be serving the king and his red coats. Really get off the microphone and grow a backbone, serve your country, make a difference, pick at least one.

E.Lord   September 12th, 2008 7:19 am ET

This article says absolutely nothing except an ex-Senator opnion of Palin. There is no reason or description of the ex-Senator statements except that he doesn't like the VP choice. What purpose does it service to publish this article? It's not informative or provides any insight to what going in the election.
Its quite obvious CNN selection of this article is instigate further negatively toward Palin as this article services no purpose other than being bias toward the democratic ticket, and is playing into molding public opnion.

Roger   September 12th, 2008 7:19 am ET

"cocky wacko", is that the best name calling he can come up with?

Ken Kahn   September 12th, 2008 7:18 am ET

And Joe Biden's not a cocky wacko? The guy who calls Obama articulate and Palin beautiful

Xavier   September 12th, 2008 7:18 am ET

After listening to her interview on foreign policy last night I have to say that she sounds more lie George BUsh than even McCain. It seems that her view on foreign policy seems to be attack, fight and intimidate by the sheer force of our might. She even admits to following the Bush doctrine. We dont need this war monger a heart beat away from the presidential office. As bad as things were with Bush, I cant help but believe that things would be even worse if this wacko ended up in the office because McCain dies. Ask yourself if you would trust this woman with the life of your children? Would you trust her to not get your child kill in a war with Russia if she were commander in chief? Please, we as Americans have to be smarter than this.

Mark   September 12th, 2008 7:18 am ET

The Nobama supporters will say anything to discredit the McCain / Palin ticket but the school yard elementary attacks will not work. Do they think that the American people are stupid. The only stupid people are the ones making the wacko and lipstick remarks. You Nobama bots have to do better than that. It's funny what people will do when they are losing and desperate.

Doug   September 12th, 2008 7:18 am ET

Strong words indeed, but....

Politicians like Palin underscore the problem in politics: too much of a personal agenda and not enough practical, universal attention to issues that matter. The more I learn about Palin, the more I think she's a budding right-wind nut-job. Plus, she's a hypocrite on nearly every issue.

John McCain had a similar problem. Every accomplishment in his life since his harrowing experience in Vietnam has been rooted in his desire to win Vietnam....even though very rational person realizes that war is long over and mostly forgotten a.k.a. the rest of us have moved on. But since McCain's Vietnam was less-than-satisfactory, he will engage us in battles and wars until he has contributed to a victory.

He reminds me of Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump". All of his ancestors dies heroically on the fields of battle, and he was supposed to also. But fate lent a hand and now he is not fulfilled by a legacy of success or honor as many others have been. He should be thrilled by the overachievements of his life. Oh well.

The double-danger is that Palin wants to help him with this every step of the way...only because she doesn't know better.

Anonymous   September 12th, 2008 7:18 am ET

I used to really watch CNN and rely on them for news. Sadly I have come to find them so distorted and slanted in the direction or shoving far left liberal GARBAGE down everyones throat I cant even watch anymore.Every story is to tear down the republicans and boost obama. It is so predictable it isnt even news anymore.
When did news networks stop simply reporting so the people can decide and start trying to make people think and beleive the way that their owners think?

canadaeh   September 12th, 2008 7:17 am ET

Lacking any lustre himself, I would imagine this unheard of ex is simply jealous. I'm sure his contribution to Obama will go a long way to help pay the army of lawyers that are digging through the tundra of Alaska looking for dirt on Palin. This all makes me so proud to be a Canadian. We may look boring, but we're civilized.

Tom in Delaware   September 12th, 2008 7:17 am ET

I would like to personally thank the Liberal Left for making Sarah Palin so popular and lovable…we just couldn't have done it without your persistent and dedicated efforts.

By keeping her the focus of attention (with the exceptions of your very own gaffe-prone canidates) you have elevated her to the point of sainthood.

Your continious slander has compelled both the media, and your own campaign, to do nothing but speak of her.

It's like a dream come true, and with a little luck, and some more hard work from you tremendously stupid individuals, she will be the first Vice-Presidential canidate in history to propel a ticket into the White House.

Hang in there, and keep up the great work.

McCain/Palin '08

mitch   September 12th, 2008 7:17 am ET

You are hearing more from dems because they are scared that they will lose because the republicans have come together. John Mccain gave his party what they wanted. It's too bad that Obama did not think more about what his party wanted.

Chris Andoe   September 12th, 2008 7:16 am ET

Partisanship aside it is critical we have the most competent people running our country, and the selection of Palin was reckless.

Willy Brown   September 12th, 2008 7:15 am ET

Lincoln Chafee is a RINO who's just jealous.

Tom in Delaware   September 12th, 2008 7:15 am ET

Mike Gilmer   September 12th, 2008 7:14 am ET

All Republicans are cocky wackos, so what's new?

Sharon - NC   September 12th, 2008 7:12 am ET

Mr. Chafee is correct. Sarah Palin is a cocky wacko. In Charlie Gibson's interview, she gravitated between winking and trying to flirt with him and giving him the evil eye when he pressed her for intelligent, clear answers. One can only imagine how badly she would behave and perform with world leaders and those of substance and intelligence.

John, Virginia   September 12th, 2008 7:11 am ET

Did Sen Chafee have extensive dealings with Gov Palin? Why would anyone care what a washed up politician with an undistinguished career has to say about anything?

Jackie   September 12th, 2008 7:09 am ET

Right on!!!. I personally don't think she is wacko but she is very ambitious and will get rid of anyone in her way. She reminds me of the evil boss at work who says that it is my way or the highway. The American people should have grave concerns of her views. She actually agreed she would go to war with RUSSIA in her interview with Charlie Gibson. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!

True Conservative   September 12th, 2008 7:09 am ET

Palin came across as unaware, adolescent, and unprepared. While I want to vote for McCain I am having second thoughts. Palin seems like some average lady off the street. I want my VP to be prepared, smarter than I am, and ready on day one. Palin proved yesterday that she is not. It was clear that her answers were scripted and even then she could not deliver.

I am very disappointed. I hope those who are thinking about voting for her think very hard before they do. Try and imagine her taking the Oath of ffice for the presidency of the United States. It could happen and is she the one you want taking that Oath? Can you see her doing it? Do you want America lead by her?

Anonymous   September 12th, 2008 7:09 am ET

BV   September 12th, 2008 7:08 am ET

He may be close to hitting the nail on the head. Each and every day I fear more for this country than the day before. Sarah Palin appears to have more of an ego than anything else. She has certainly displayed her lack of knowledge in many crucial areas. I guess her followers aren't concerned about the real important issues, though. I'm not sure what the Republicans are concerned with. It certainly isn't the economy or understanding the bail out of Fannie or Freddie. The bigger issue of Foreign Policy must not be important either as she hasn't displayed any knowledge of any of these issues and they still think that she is the one to step in as President should something happen to McCain.
Sure does prove to me that McCain isn't about what he says he is. If he was he would have picked someone with the background needed to be a real VP and a possible President. I was under the impression that is what the election of a President was about. Has she even spoken with any world leaders?
Yes, she is a cocky wacko with a big ego. A cocky wacko who is willing to put the whole country at risk and apparently doesn't have any conscious concern about it.

Funnie   September 12th, 2008 7:07 am ET

I couldn't have said it better. I think it is just a matter of time before Americans realize how incompetent Palin is. Obama spoke about long-term solutions and not short-term stop gaps. So Americans, God for bid, should anything happen to McCain, would Sarah be that long-term solution we are looking for. Americans time are too serious too let our excitement moves faster than our intellectual capacity. Palin's public diplomacy is not where it should be in this trying time. Remember what C. Rice said about Mr. Biden? " He is a very fine and diplomatic statemen", U dont' have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what this says about the importance of VP in-relation to Foreign Affirs dipolomacy in dealing with issues. You can be robust and make noise like Palin but please!!!America deserves better.

I agree. And I don't believe the polls. I can't see how anyone could fall for John McInSane and Sara "Can't Even Manage Her Own Home" Paling in comparison to Obama/Biden."

If people can't see that McInsane's policies will continue George Bush's administration they're InSane as well and WHEN AMERICA CONTINUES TO FAIL the regular people, they'll deserve everything they get.

DON'T FORGET, IT'S THE RICH CONTROLLING THE THE MEDIA, THE POLLS, AND THE SPIN.

I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is so scary. AMERICANS WAKE-UP!!!!!!!!!!!

Raymond Duke   September 12th, 2008 7:02 am ET

Lincoln Chafee is the cocky wacko. He run as a republican and then tried to legislate his job as a left wing liberal which he is. The people of Rhode Island said enough of this and sent him packing. I watched the interview that ABC done with Palin and saw the side angle they used for the camera and how they tried portraying the interview as a homemade event to help the Obama camp and make her look bad. Now you wonder why she should not give interviews to the press. When the press got to do interviews with me it would be in a debate with Biden or Obama. She should Debate Obama also and show what a phony unexperienced person he is.

Zogby Gallup   September 12th, 2008 7:01 am ET

Wow...Chafee calling someone a wacko. Pot calling the kettle black.

geoff   September 12th, 2008 7:00 am ET

She is a wacko. Plain and simple. Everyone knows it...and she's scary. She probably gets a lot of things done...but I'm sure there's tension in the room whenever she's there. As a president.... with McCains certain in office demise.... having her in the same building as a nuclear trigger is nothing less than horrific....horrific.

David B Campbell   September 12th, 2008 6:59 am ET

As a Rhode Islander I have always supported Senator Chafee...but this is a huge disapointment

john   September 12th, 2008 6:59 am ET

The thought of Sarah Palin being one heartbeat from the Presidency should make any intelligent American voter fear for the future of our Country and our way of life should John McCain be elected. Let's get it right for a change and not treat this election as a High School popularity contest. I can't beleive John McCain has such bad judgment, but I beleive his handlers saw his campaign as looking as tired and sluggish as the Senator.

pete   September 12th, 2008 6:58 am ET

Sen. Chaffee should not throw stones. He was a Republican that did back his party, now he claims to be Independent but he backed a Democrat (Obama) question is, does the good Senator know what side of the fence he is on or does he just blow with the wind? Any comment from this man should be discredited as lunatic comment from a lost soul.

I bet you won't see that report on Fox News anytime soon..... What will Fox news do when the Whitehouse changes from Republican to Dem. They will lose all their usefulness.

Without someone hand feeding their people preapproved news to read, they will have to dust off their shoes and note pads and have to go out and actually report on news that is happening. Opposed to only reporting short sound bites and spins to justify the actions and programs of the administration.......

faxbot   September 12th, 2008 6:54 am ET

I agree This UNvetted candidate is a threat and a danger. My family and friends were horrified about the city council meetings she had in Wasilla ,Asking the city Librarian about banning books not just once but TWICE that proves MOTIVE that proves this women had /has an AGENDA Did she and her entire family think they could have a state trooper fired EVEN IF he was derilict in his duty it was NOT there call to make. This women has and will continue to work the system in her favor and does not care if other people happen to get in her way.
I have watched and listen to her and to these new interviews John Mccain made a huge mistake Americans deserve better.

M.B. from Berlin   September 12th, 2008 6:52 am ET

Genious. He's so right. I guess a lot of Repugs think his way.

Well I know if you look at Polls at RCP... well yesterday 22times McCain in front, just 8times Obama... But just wait till the fairy dust is blown off of Mrs. "Failin" and wait for the debates to come and afterwards there will be upside down and Obama will roll on to victory.

This cocky wacko together with Mr. "I don't care for modern techniques, American people and Soldiers" McSame MUSTN'T become our leaders in Oval Office. The whole world will make jokes and laugh about the USA for being sooooooooo stupid if it votes republicans again...

She is against abortion rights, She is against Sex Education, Condoms, Stem cell Research which could one day find a way to cure such illness as Diabetes, Liver Cancer, Asthma, Aids, Autism..... But of Course she doesn't support it that means these diseases may never be cured which also means that Million on upoun Millions will Ultimatly die We Need a True Leader that will Aid in ending the suffering of Millions and Death of many More Those are just a few of the Reason we need to Elect Barack Obama And Joe Biden as the Next President and Vice President.

ANDROLOMA, Commerce City, Colorado   September 12th, 2008 6:48 am ET

Cocky wackos? Loony leftists? And this is what politics has become, an insult fest? When did the brain-damaged children start running this country? Or when will they stop? The best and brightest minds of this country must be doing anything other than politics.

With all that said, Pentecoastals are indeed some of society's most earnest, uncaged psychos. It takes a special type of imagination to believe that babbling in made-up languages to a god actually pleases that god; but humanity is especially adept at tricking itself.

ken   September 12th, 2008 6:47 am ET

Coger   September 12th, 2008 6:46 am ET

After hearing Sarah Palin state that she would go to war with Russia over the its incursion into Georgia, Chaffee may want to rethink his portrayal of Palin as a çocky wacko, and upgrade it to dangerously kooky wacko. Considering her 'Alaska First' views, and her Pentecostal adherance to her church's doomsday prophesy that the world (excluding Alaska) is soon to be destroyed in a God ordained nuclear holocaust, one must wonder how far she might go to insure prophesy becomes history.

Bill, Owego, NY   September 12th, 2008 6:46 am ET

I have felt there was "something wrong" with this candidate ever since watching her acceptence speech. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I knew she was even worse than the other Republicans. Now that the stories about her involvement in the "Bridge to Nowhere", the firing of her ex-brother-in-law and the earmarks she requested as Governor of Alaska have been published, I have figured it out; she was lying to everyone about everything.

GARedNeck   September 12th, 2008 6:45 am ET

Hopefully Democratic politicans will be able to correct any damage they caused by not standing up to the Bush White House in the past. Hopefully American voters will come to their senses and vote to keep another GOP puppet out of the White House, thus allowing both houses of Congress to correct the damage done to America while Bush and his GOP terrorist organization tried to destroy this country: something no outside terrorist organization has been able to do.

We have to break this cycle of elected officials who apparently want to destroy the fabric of our government from within: the government that our forefathers created. If the government doesn't care for the citizens what good is it?

I'm not impressed with a president who is mostly interested in deploying our troops overseas to save a people from themselves. I'm more impressed with a president who will take the necessary actions to ensure that the government is looking out for the welfare of American citizens – using every tax dollar it has to satisfy every American's basic needs before we take on the problems of the rest of the world. This is the purpose of the government.

No one is forced to remain in a country that they hate. If you want anarchy and the "Wild West" atmosphere which the GOP seems to desire, I'm sure there is some place for you, but not the USA!

Steve in CT   September 12th, 2008 6:43 am ET

Just a scorn and bitter whiner who's jealous he didn't get tapped. This guy is so low key nobody realizes he exists except himself who has visions of greatness within himself. Picking this guy for VP would have made even Biden look exciting.

sue of canada   September 12th, 2008 6:41 am ET

wake up americans!! it's anyone's guess that this VP pick by mccain is solely for politcal gain and not "country first". mccain's decision is not only reckless but irresponsible and reek of desperation. sarah palin is the kind of woman who would make a mistake and stick to it regardless without admitting that mistake even though the facts are clearly pointing in the opposite direction. take the 'bridge to nowhere' for example. she repeated it endlessly and someone should just stop her. who in their right mind would vote for the republicans if mccain is a 100% staunch supporter of bush's policies. only in america but in other democracies, the republicans would not stand a chance! as some tv host said, "don't vote out of stupidity, fear and prejudice".

well after Palin's first press interview yesterday –she had NO foreign policy knowledge whatsoever . She is scarey , i can she her and McCain getting us into a 3rd war. just what we need.

Joan   September 12th, 2008 6:36 am ET

I saw her interview on ABC. Definitely she is a very dangerous person. Dangerous because she has very ignorant and dangerous mindset with no knowledge at all of foreign affair and national security. Mccain put America into a danger by picking her only for his political ambition. This is crazy.

Mike Narducci   September 12th, 2008 6:36 am ET

Lets take back our country. It is time that U.S citizens realize that our system does not work. We vote politicians in and when they become corrupt we are stuck with them. Why would politicians stay in office all of they're lives instead of retiring? They do it for the perks. Do you know any politician who is not a millionair? TERM LIMITS. For example Charlie Rangel and his tax problems will get a slap on the wrist unlike the average person who would pay a penalty with interest from the IRS. How about the politician from Loisianna where they found $90,000 in his freezer? He still hasn't gone to trial. Face it politicians are better than the average person.

Don   September 12th, 2008 6:34 am ET

Like he really knows all about her. What makes him such that he can call someone a name? Can he back up his mouth or is this just another political ploy from the extreme left wingers?

DebM, Allentown, PA   September 12th, 2008 6:33 am ET

I think that Chafee is probably expressing the same view that many Republicans express secretly.

For the women who think that the McCain/Palin ticket will work well for them, please consider that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin's town was the ONLY one in Alaska that charged rape victims for the forensic tests required to determine rape. And that John McCain, when presented with Joe Biden's sponsored Violence Against Women Act that made it illegal to charge rape victims for those forensic tests, voted AGAINST it.

Ed in Texas   September 12th, 2008 6:33 am ET

Wacko – sounds like it to me; she is a perfect running mate for McWarMonger... I'd say that was a rather irresponsible and pretty flippant discussion of war, with Russia, like that is feasible. Come on, give me a break, anyone who thinks war with Russia or China or any other country for that mater, with our weakened forces, low international standing, weakened (imaginary) economy and the absolute certainty of not a win, but mutual destruction is an idiot and should not be running for elected office. Mcwarmonger 1 meet PitBullWarmonger 2 (with lipstick of course). I hope America is listening and watching these 2...

Get this off   September 12th, 2008 6:31 am ET

There was a Presidential Forum tonight. Instead of having that as a lead on your little blog, you've have an incendiary article about a former a GOP Senator blasting Sarah Palin as your top headline for the pst 19 hours.

This is blatant partisanship on the part of your company. Shame on you all. If a "former Democratic Senator" were to criticize Obama or Biden, it would be tucked away in your blog somewhere and not even a top headline.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

anfo   September 12th, 2008 6:30 am ET

Finally a conservative and a christian who speaks the truth!..Overall, Republicans lie through their teeth and Americans have no problems sleeping over lies. SAD!....

JImmy in California   September 12th, 2008 6:28 am ET

Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee says of Gov. Palin, "she's a cocky wacko." Now when Senator McCain hears this I suppose he will demand an apology from Senator Obama for it. They all talk of polotics being really rough and harsh. Well I think it depends on who the target is. For months, Senator Obama caught hell about speeches made by his then Pastor Wright. Now video comes to the surface where Gov. Palin is seen making a speech in church about this war being GOD's war and nothing is hardly said. This was not her pastor in a sermon at the church. This was a Vice Presidential candidate making this speech and it is news for all of a few days.

Don't talk to me about her being treated unfairly when she gets almost no attention about her church speeches and Obama is all but hung for the words of his pastor.

I'm waiting now for Obama to be blamed for the comments made by former Senator Chafee.

Kelvin Marshall   September 12th, 2008 6:27 am ET

I think the comments are a little extreme, but I not think she is ready to lead this country.

Judith Caron   September 12th, 2008 6:25 am ET

What a sad day in politics this is when an angry "has been" resorts to sandbox name calling when his own sense of "self" is threatened!

Eugene   September 12th, 2008 6:24 am ET

I'm glad that I'm not the only one thinking this. Palin was a terrible pick for McCain. If she should succeed McCain, I shudder to think about her Bush-like ultra-conservative antics she will impose on progressive America, just as the Bush Administration has done. Forget diplomacy, let's tap your phone lines, send troops without permission into sovereign nations like Pakistan, create another Cold War with Russia and China, force democracy on other nations, and bully scare tactics all across the world. We can certainly kill our way to victory? Can't we?

Jasper   September 12th, 2008 6:23 am ET

After reading this article I am not sure who the real "cocky wacko" is, Gov. Palin or former senator Chafee.

Independent in Florida   September 12th, 2008 6:21 am ET

It's good to see the Obama supporters, like this Chafee guy, taking the high road and sticking to the issues. Heaven forbid they descend to childish name-calling!

This line of campaigning is really going to win over Independents.

Christopher   September 12th, 2008 6:18 am ET

I have to applaud this guy for stating the obvious. I mean, I havent met her in person but can see that she is exactly what he stated just from seeing her on TV. I sincerly cant believe the mind set of people that are supporting this worthless ticket!!! Understanding that John McCain is just as worthless as Bush, his pick of Sara (Liar/Cover-up-Palin) is utterly foolish. It is very clear that her judgement is very flawed in terms of firing anyone that is in a flawed relationship with family members (Abuse of power..just like Bush/Cheney) And I am almost certain that at some point there will be a credible news outlet that will report the TRUTH about Palins youngest child...which really appears NOT to be her's....wow, if you will lie about that....what else will you lie about?

Robe   September 12th, 2008 6:17 am ET

I find it ironic that the GOP can say anything disbarging about a candidate, but no one is allowed to say anything about their candidate.

Gov. Palin is has no experience. Yes, she was a mayor of a small town of about 5,000, who had a balance budget and was left with a $22 million deficit when she left office. She hired a lobbyist and a town administrator because she could not do the job. She is the governor of a small populated state for less than two years. True, she gave the tax payers oil money that was received from the Valdez oil spill, but she has not brought economic boom to Alaska, even with the millions of dollars of pork projects money she received.

She has lied and stymied the investigation on the ethics complaint. Gov. Palin knows nothing about the environment and conservation, because she is willing to destroy Alaska for the mining, oil, and hunting.

This is a very sad day in America, when the country would rather subject themselves to living with in bad economic and war times, than vote for a Black person. McCain has shown that he has the morals of an alley cat, by his numerous affairs because his wife was crippled. The wife he put in front of the American people is a product of his affairs.

Hopefully, Gov. Palin's lies will be found out before the election. Is that her daughter or son's child, because she it couldn't be hers' since the hospital has no record of her giving birth there on the day she said. She is a George Bush is dress, since she took a balance budget and turned it into a large deficit. She fired the Police Chief because he would not do her biddings. She calls herself a conservative religious person, when her actions are not religious, but totally self-serving.

It is a sad day in America, when it does not matter what you do, as long as you are WHITE.

This country has come a long way, but the last 8 years have set it back to the early 1900s. It seems to continue to spiral down with the backward thinking of WHITE IS RIGHT, REGARDLESS WHETHER IT IS WRONG.

Lord Help Us All.

Belle2   September 12th, 2008 6:15 am ET

Palin's ideas are certainly outside the norm. However, they are not nearly as far out of the norm as Obama's church is outside of the norm. Obama's church is the only tie Obama has to Christianity!! So, if we are looking for the cocky whacko, let's look at Obama and the racist views of his church and pastor. Let's us also look at how his followers believe he is the messiah-"Jesus was a community organizer." I don't like Palin but what choice did McCain have? I don't believe she is qualified to be VP and certainly not qualified to be President-but then, neither is Obama. She is just another rock star-just like Obama.

She has already demonstrated that she does'nt care about Alaska accept how to make the most money by destroying the land! She is worse than Cheney only more ignorant, WOW!

I am more dissappointed in the Democrats for not having the backbone when it counted the most!!!! If it weren't for Obama I wouldn't even participate in the farce of an election where no true choice is given ....and he is hanging by only a few threads!

Just one question....could not You have spoken out a little louder. Did you really think you were alone?

Linc Chafee used to be my favorite Republican statesman.

She isn't bad because she is a woman, she is simply bad.

I was listening to a neo con radio screamer tonight. He spoke of this wacho's "choice" to keep her downs baby, and her daughter's choice to keep her child.

One would have to be a total nut not to get "choice" for this family, while this arrogant nut wants to impose her views on every family.

Even my 82 y/o mother is not buying the anti-woman,' I'll think for you'
I can choose for every body in the USA.

Linc is able to be articulate his views, but this call is perfectly expressed and should be the standard for clear and hitting the nail on the empty head.

Proud American   September 12th, 2008 6:04 am ET

Perfect way to describe Palin, a "cocky wacko". Agree 100%.

me   September 12th, 2008 6:03 am ET

What does it matter who I vote for...in the end the electoral college is the one to decide our fate. Will it be crazy Palin and McCain? Will it be lack of experience Obama and his running mate Biden? I'm not happy with either choice...and truth be told it doesn't matter anyway because the electoral college gets to pick.
