Former GOP senator calls Palin a 'cocky wacko'

Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.
Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee has words for Sarah Palin.

(CNN) – Former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee was known for keeping a low-key profile on Capitol Hill, but the Republican -turned -Independent is making waves with his exceedingly blunt comments on newly-minted Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin:

She's a "cocky wacko," he told a Washington think tank earlier this week.

WATCH: Chafee make the remarks

Chafee, the lone Senate Republican to vote against the Iraq war who endorsed Obama's White House bid earlier this year, told an audience at the New America Foundation in Washington Tuesday that Palin's selection has energized Obama backers.

"People were coming into my office, phone calls were flooding in, e-mails were coming in, 'I just sent money to Obama, I couldn't sleep last night' - from the left. To see this cocky wacko up there," he said.

He also described McCain's candidacy as "lackluster” and described the selection of Palin as a throwing "this firestorm, this tornado, into the whole presidential election."

Chafee, whose father served as senator from Rhode Island from 1976 until his death in 1999, narrowly lost his re-election bid two years ago to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse amid that election cycle’s wave of anti-Republican sentiment.

Chafee made a stir earlier this year when he directly called out Democrats who supported the Iraq war and were now expressing regret for their vote.

“I find it surprising now, in 2008, how many Democrats are running for president after shirking their constitutional duty to check and balance this president,” he wrote in his January 2008 book, “Against the Tide.” “Being wrong about sending Americans to kill and be killed, maim and be maimed, is not like making a punctuation mistake in a highway bill."

Couldn't agree more with his comments. I was one of the donors to Obama's campaign the day after her convention speech. I mean truly, especially after her comments regarding Russia - there is no way Americans in their right mind can put someone like this, with these kinds of views, a literal breath away from the Presidency. I will do my part and not vote for McCain.

I think the Dems are being unfair on Sarah Palin over her war-for-Georgia remark. She may have been confusing her Georgias.

What does it matter who I vote for...in the end the electoral college is the one to decide our fate. Will it be crazy Palin and McCain? Will it be lack of experience Obama and his running mate Biden? I'm not happy with either choice...and truth be told it doesn't matter anyway because the electoral college gets to pick.

Linc Chafee used to be my favorite Republican statesman.

She isn't bad because she is a woman, she is simply bad.

I was listening to a neo con radio screamer tonight. He spoke of this wacho's "choice" to keep her downs baby, and her daughter's choice to keep her child.

One would have to be a total nut not to get "choice" for this family, while this arrogant nut wants to impose her views on every family.

Even my 82 y/o mother is not buying the anti-woman,' I'll think for you'
I can choose for every body in the USA.

Linc is able to be articulate his views, but this call is perfectly expressed and should be the standard for clear and hitting the nail on the empty head.

Chafee's comment that Sarah Palin is "a cocky wacko" falls into the category of "it takes one to know one".

I am an an Indepent though I lean more to Democratic issues. Both partiies did not do the American people justice. I am more dissappointed in the Democrats for not having the backbone when it counted the most!!!! If it weren't for Obama I wouldn't even participate in the farce of an election where no true choice is given ....and he is hanging by only a few threads!

Just one question....could not You have spoken out a little louder. Did you really think you were alone?

Palin is already to push the nuke button on Russia! What a scarily ignorant person she is, can you imagine her in the White House making decisions to wipe out the entire planet? She has already demonstrated that she does'nt care about Alaska accept how to make the most money by destroying the land! She is worse than Cheney only more ignorant, WOW!

Palin's ideas are certainly outside the norm. However, they are not nearly as far out of the norm as Obama's church is outside of the norm. Obama's church is the only tie Obama has to Christianity!! So, if we are looking for the cocky whacko, let's look at Obama and the racist views of his church and pastor. Let's us also look at how his followers believe he is the messiah-"Jesus was a community organizer." I don't like Palin but what choice did McCain have? I don't believe she is qualified to be VP and certainly not qualified to be President-but then, neither is Obama. She is just another rock star-just like Obama.

I find it ironic that the GOP can say anything disbarging about a candidate, but no one is allowed to say anything about their candidate.

Gov. Palin is has no experience. Yes, she was a mayor of a small town of about 5,000, who had a balance budget and was left with a $22 million deficit when she left office. She hired a lobbyist and a town administrator because she could not do the job. She is the governor of a small populated state for less than two years. True, she gave the tax payers oil money that was received from the Valdez oil spill, but she has not brought economic boom to Alaska, even with the millions of dollars of pork projects money she received.

She has lied and stymied the investigation on the ethics complaint. Gov. Palin knows nothing about the environment and conservation, because she is willing to destroy Alaska for the mining, oil, and hunting.

This is a very sad day in America, when the country would rather subject themselves to living with in bad economic and war times, than vote for a Black person. McCain has shown that he has the morals of an alley cat, by his numerous affairs because his wife was crippled. The wife he put in front of the American people is a product of his affairs.

Hopefully, Gov. Palin's lies will be found out before the election. Is that her daughter or son's child, because she it couldn't be hers' since the hospital has no record of her giving birth there on the day she said. She is a George Bush is dress, since she took a balance budget and turned it into a large deficit. She fired the Police Chief because he would not do her biddings. She calls herself a conservative religious person, when her actions are not religious, but totally self-serving.

It is a sad day in America, when it does not matter what you do, as long as you are WHITE.

This country has come a long way, but the last 8 years have set it back to the early 1900s. It seems to continue to spiral down with the backward thinking of WHITE IS RIGHT, REGARDLESS WHETHER IT IS WRONG.

    Lord Help Us All.

I have to applaud this guy for stating the obvious. I mean, I havent met her in person but can see that she is exactly what he stated just from seeing her on TV. I sincerly cant believe the mind set of people that are supporting this worthless ticket!!! Understanding that John McCain is just as worthless as Bush, his pick of Sara (Liar/Cover-up-Palin) is utterly foolish. It is very clear that her judgement is very flawed in terms of firing anyone that is in a flawed relationship with family members (Abuse of power..just like Bush/Cheney) And I am almost certain that at some point there will be a credible news outlet that will report the TRUTH about Palins youngest child...which really appears NOT to be her's....wow, if you will lie about that....what else will you lie about?

It's good to see the Obama supporters, like this Chafee guy, taking the high road and sticking to the issues. Heaven forbid they descend to childish name-calling!

This line of campaigning is really going to win over Independents.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one thinking this. Palin was a terrible pick for McCain. If she should succeed McCain, I shudder to think about her Bush-like ultra-conservative antics she will impose on progressive America, just as the Bush Administration has done. Forget diplomacy, let's tap your phone lines, send troops without permission into sovereign nations like Pakistan, create another Cold War with Russia and China, force democracy on other nations, and bully scare tactics all across the world. We can certainly kill our way to victory? Can't we?
