McCain and Obama visited Ground Zero Thursday.
McCain and Obama visited Ground Zero Thursday.

(CNN) - The idea of a joint September 11 visit to Ground Zero by both John McCain and Barack Obama was in the works for less than a week, according to both campaigns.

Obama suggested the idea to McCain Friday afternoon when the Democratic presidential nominee called his Republican counterpart Friday, the day after the GOP convention ended, to congratulate him on his convention speech.

"[Obama] called after the convention speech, and over the course of the
discussion they mutually agreed to meet jointly in New York," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

The two men went to Ground Zero Thursday, entering the site together. Both candidates exchanged brief remarks and spoke with some of those on hand for the commemoration.

Obama is scared, cant even give specific details, he never mentions the real effects of the policies, he is playing a " i hope this will work campaign". we need someone who has reformed. and to obama, who criticizes her on the bridge to nowhere she rejected, he never mentioned he voted for it....and obama will do like he did to other countries when it comes to russia, he will say i am sorry about america how can we make a deal, leading us into a socialist and beyond country ... watch all this unfold into a great american turnaround in the end.....i was the 1st to be sent to afghanistan, and 1st to be sent to iraq in the army.. obama need's to enlist in the army for 4 years as enlisted or officer before he acts like he knows what goes on in places like that.. what a sham it would be to get another fake politician in for another 4 yrs.

It is so dumb for anyone to believe that these polls will predict the results of the election. The youths that are in millions for Senator Obama do not use landline, they used cell phones.

Who are these people behind these polling? Are they aware that times have changed, that most people use cell phones now?

I did not see Obama "dogging McCain's footsteps," as one poster wrote. What I saw was Obama reaching out to one of the crowd, asking an aide for a business card so that person in need could contact his office. I also saw Obama, Mrs. McCain and Mayor Bloomberg energetically walking uphill after the ceremony. Senator McCain appeared to be a bit winded. Is he really physically able at 72 to take on the demands of the presidency? Oh, and it's not our enemies who want him elected. In response to another poster, I would NOT call the Canadians and Europeans I spoke with this summer our enemies, but rather, our close friends, and they were in favor of Obama. Our enemies want the GOP to continue in office, as the Bush administration has been Al Qaeda's greatest recruiting tool.

Jeff   September 11th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Wow Palin just said we might have to go to war with Russia over Georgia....now what a stupid thing to say! OMG she just blew it there! You are not even VP yet you are already out to start WWIII? yes we will go to war over georgia killing 150 million Americans and 200 Million Russians and god knows how many others over Georgia! Jebus if this person gets in office or her warmonger grandfather we are all toast! Thats not the way you stand up to the Russians without even discussions first. I dont think you people hear me 150 million dead when the nukes fly over

She Can Take It   September 11th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

I hope the press gives Sarah a hard time for the following reasons:

-John should never have selected someone who is not experienced.
-John should never have put himself before his country
- When John's plane was shot down, he didn't think anything like that could ever happened. I guess he also thinks he's immortal.
- Sarah should have been vetted properly
-Sarah should not have been sequestered in order to catch up
-If she's going to be an attack dog, she's got to be tested

Once again, for America's sake, I hope the press gives her a hard time. We've known John for 27 years, Biden for 36 and Barach for 4. We've known Sarah for 13 days. I hope the press gives her a hard time. She can take it, if she's smart. If she's not, she's not ready.

Obama proves time and time again, he's the real deal...McCain has sold his soul to Karl Rove and it's sad because he only did it when it was obvious he could not win fairly. I think McCain could have run this campaign with dignity because he's a good man, though a somewhat weak leader, but he has chosen the low, stupid, Karl Rove road...it's a pity...now he's an afterthought, an old man on the sidelines while his VP gets paraded around as the religious right hero, those people are so desperate for their own celebrity that they have build Mrs Palin up so high to their base that she could never live up to it, and the inevitable fall from grace will be swift and terrible...

I think some people are attracted to a Palin ticket because that are hurting in the current Bush Administration and want their pain to end now. I think those people will be disappointed and disillusioned.

It will depend if America wants to move on from the Scooter Libby / Rove years.

Hopefully, McCain will retire finally.

For many years I have been a faithful supporter of CNN but I actually turn off the commentary now. Fox is all about the right and they make no bones about it. CNN has always been center; but everytime I hear the news it sounds like FOX now. The think the pundits are so impressed with Palin that they are forgetting that the race is between Obama and McCain, not Palin. Then all the right wing commentators are playing up the silly stories that have no bearing on the case to continue this Palin mania. I think as a group you have gone overboard in trying to balance this election coverage. We need a little more positive on Obama to balance out the negative we hear from FOX. I know many CNN pundits supported Hillary, but is it necessary to punish the Democratic ideals by giving this race to McCain? Pat

I suggest the next time you decide to insinuate that a veteran POW is faking a war related injury you do it on a day other than September 11. Seems a little inappropriate. To bad I can not say the same of many of his supporters I see in these postings.

You may loose your best, and OUR best chance for the first black commander in chief of the united states.

Your hatred and your stupid comments and actions WILL do it.

BUT I AM SURE YOU will blame the right for it and not the true cause of a potential Obama defeat.

The left will be to blame.

I am and so many of my friends sick of being called stupid by the left because of THE LEFTS own stupidity, being called a hatemonger BY THE LEFT that they themselves use hate speech the USA is tiered of it.

B. Journalistic integrity? Yellow journalism?
C. The Bias is about as obvious as Al Jazeera
D. If you had any brains you would at least be more tactful in reporting on that god-awful "redneck" "far-right" "liar" etc. Sarah Palin.

Even the 9-11 article? Wow.

I wonder if the mods will post this. Most likely not.

Lets hope the better man wins!

Hi Jack, you obviously paraphrased quite a few posts, including your own.

Tony   September 11th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

It's nice to see that some Republicans are trying to distance themselves from McCain and Palin. Common sense is prevailing or else they are just trying to save their own butts.

Jeff   September 11th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

What we want to know though is about the Affair between Palin and her husbands ex business partner! Also, is it true that she supported survivalist groups in Alaska?

Molly September 11th, 2008 6:24 pm ET
"Too bad the obama group cannot just wish GOV Palin well and get on with the campaign. WHY all the trash talk of her????"

And of course, we have someone taking this time to trash talk about trash talking, and me trash talking about someone trash talking the trash talk. But I wonder why she would be so hypocritical to go and launch this trash herself, as if she is being nice.

(two negatives (hers x mine) make a positive, so this one by math equals a positive post)

To hurriCain Palin,

I understand that you may not like the man or his policies but Obama is by far smarter than Mc Cain. Don't get it twisted.

Kathy   September 11th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Obama is the one who reached out and called McCain. He is the one that reached across the isle for the good of the country.
Not McCain. McCain couldn't say no or he would have been called on that.
People need to realize that.
Obama is for change that we can believe in.
I supported Hillary first, but I am very excited about Obama/Biden.
I always liked Biden and he is perfect.

Vote Obama /Biden 08/12   September 11th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Obama /Biden we love you .
Its Change We Can Believe In Yes We Can .

Lets hope there is only one McCain as 8 years is enough of McBush down spiral / The loss of over 4,000 Warriors and Iraq deaths / problems here and around the world / its not this time not on our watch .

The Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   September 11th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

In this 9/11 world of ours, and on this anniversary day, I think Bush and McCain have made us more safe, but we are still not completely safe. We need strong leaders, not some weaklings in the high office. McCain will protect us and our country and our values. I am not sure that Obama will.

In fact I doubt that Obama has the strength to do so.

By the way lipstick wearers, why do you let Obama dis you? Why didn't Obama say "well put a suit and tie on the pig and he is still a pig?" But no, Obama had to once again "dis" the females. He could have used male adjectives, but he had to put the dig in against women. I am shocked.

He didn't pick Hillary and even Joe said, “Make no mistake about this, Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. Let’s get that straight,” Biden said testily. And Biden also said, "Obama is not ready to lead."

Obama called us mid westerners "bitter." Seems he is getting to be quite the elitist and "uppity" and likes to dis us, Americans. I am shocked.

So you have one candidate that is giving a woman a chance at the Office of Vice President and on the other hand you have a candidate dising women. You choose.

I choose McCain.

Tannim   September 11th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

All kudos to both of them for putting aside their differences for this.

Tomorrow they'll go back to attacking each other, and we'll go back to telling everyone how much both of their authoritarian ways are un-American.

Obama/Biden 08   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Leave it to Obama to be the BETTER One and make the plan and IDEA of it. Obama is a MUCH better Planner and is much more thoughtful.

katherine   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Cynthia, your so right. I am so glad that the comments weren't closed yet! Go to the end of the RNC convention. I almost felt for Cindy. She wanted to walk out with him and he moved her to the other side. When she wanted to walk up the stage with him he told her something and she ended up getting on Todd's side and Sarah and McCain walked up. I just thought about How Biden and Obama walked along side their wives. However it does make sense when you consider how he has voted in congress. Against equal pay, against the domestic violence bill.

Bethie   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

You're right, that is Obama's grandfather!

Susan   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

I thought it was a great idea. I would have been even more impressed
if they could have scheduled Ms. Palin for Friday instead of her cashing on 9/11.
But that is right Friday is take out the trash day in DC
politics / maybe Monday then.

Jason   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Obama has lots of good ideas. And he cares. McCain has ideas and cares too. But Obama takes it up another notch.

OBAMA   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Glad to see the could work together on such a tragic day in history.

Deb, Allentown, PA   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

So women, did you know that when she was mayor of Wasilla, Wasilla was the only town that charged rape victims for their own forensic exams.

And when Biden tried to put through the Violence Against Women Act that made it illegal to charge those rape victims, McCain voted against it.

This is who some of you women have chosen to vote for? You must be kidding!

Emmanuel   September 11th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

Very nice idea... I dont think it was imperative to give credit to Obama.. that part was not relevant in telling the story that they both payed respects to the victims of 9/11.

That being said

Trying to say that the junior Obama is the most forward thinking ;person by telling McCain that they should meet at the site?
Aren't you people tired of spin? Obama does not control McCain. Didn't you see how he was dogging McCain's steps while there today?

Sally from Cali   September 11th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

These two guys are both brave enough to make great sacrifices for this country. Both have served the country in different ways that are necessary to ensure peace and domestic tranquility.

I commend them for putting aside their differences for the good of the country, just like they will work together after the election.

hurriCAIN PALIN   September 11th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

Be aware that reports are coming in of "absentee ballots" being sent to Independent & Democratic voters in battleground states from the McCain campaign. I don't know if this is true, but if it is, it represents election fraud.
I say this to make people aware of election material being sent to them and make sure it is legitimate.

"Economic justice" simply means punishing the successful and redistributing their wealth by government fiat. It's a euphemism for socialism.

The Obama campaign needs to quit with the lame lies about Michelle. In Chicago huh? Cause her kids had their first week of school??
WELL WHAT THE HECK WAS SHE DOING AT A WOMEN'S FORUM IN INDIANA YESTERDAY??? And...she was ALSO IN OHIO AT A BAPTIST'S CONVENTION.

face it...the Obama campaign knew Cindy would be there..knew it would be awkward for Michelle not to be there with all the problems she has as far as how she feels on the country (9-11 Michelle??) and thought nobody would call them out on the lies they tell about she can't be there. Obama hiding his wife-he's ashamed of her and so is the campaign-or could it be something else??
Every week Michelle does campaign events on Wed and Thursday and stays overnight too! She had the girls with her in L.A. last week overnight.
guess this wasn't her thing.

We Americans need to carefully consider our vote. This is no light matter and is a great civic responsibility. Get beyond the grousing and sniping and review the issues. don't take shots at the candidates today

if they can be hands off so can everyone else.

if you can't support your candidate without taking a shot at the other candidate

it says a lot about your candidate and more about you

In talking to a friend the other day I was told she would vote for a true American

I asked what does a true American look like she didn't want to answer

I am one American who twice in the primaries of 2000 and 2008 has supported Senator McCain

I am supporting Senator Obama in the General

and although I am not with John McCain, I love the man

but I have to go a different way

This nastiness on both sides especially on the McCain side is very unfortunate because it says this is the only way to be president.

DJ Los Angeles   September 11th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Poor McCain is getting too old to last 4 years as President...which leaves Private Ryan and many others to ponder the very real frightening thought of Sarah Palin running the White House.

American Airman   September 11th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

I think this really shows the spirit of John McCain's speech when he said that he and Obama are both Americans and that is a bond no matter what they each might think.

I think both of them should be commended on this day for being able to put politics aside and focus on the remembrance of this tragic day for our nation.

To those of you that have taken this opportunity to smear either of these candidates, shame on you. People complain of divisiveness in our country, and you are the ones that feed this disease.

Today, America Remembers. Tomorrow it is game on again.

McPale in comparison   September 11th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a very very small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.

Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.she supported an Alaskan Constitutional ammendment to ban abortions.
She is not only pro-life but is involved with — and even steered tax money toward — organizations that give misleading information on abortion.

She supported right-wing extremist & Nazi sympathizer, Pat Buchanan for
president in 2000.

Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.
At one point, Palin supported mandatory education for teenagers about contraception, something that political insiders in both parties will find ironic in the wake of her 17-year-old daughter Bristol’s pregnancy and upcoming 'shotgun' marriage.

She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.

She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.
How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.
She says that God told her to build an oil pipeline.
She thinks the Iraq War is Gods Christian war against Islamic beliefs.

She clearly comitted numerous documented abuses of power as Mayor of that very very small city.that she appologized for as "mistakes".
While a Mayor She fired the city’s librarian because she would not remove books from the shelves that Palin felt were against her views. Can You say Censorship?

She admitted that she does not even know what the V.P. does. She's just a 'soccer mom'.
Palin has an operating business license for a marketing company whose name — Rouge Cou — was is supposed to be a French version of “redneck.”
Palin’s Management Style is to Bully and Demand Political Loyalty. Palin’s tenure as mayor of Wasilla was marred by tremendous staff turnover, first when she fired most of the top staff — including the city’s librarian — because she questioned their loyalty, and then later when staff quit because of her micromanaging style. Wasilla even lost the opportunity to hire a police chief because he said the job seemed too political.

Obama looks very presidential. That was a wonderful idea he had to meet with McCain on this day. Great men generate great ideas.

This the closest that McCain is going to get to Obama. Come on people wake up. If you think that McCain is going be an different from Bush, then we deserve to be in this mess we're in now. "My friends", be open to change and let all your differences aside. 8 years of Republicans is good enough for me, lets see what this man (Obama) has to offer. McCain doesn't even want to talk about the issues anymore because theres nothing to talk about. Instead, he'd rather ride the coat tail of Sarah Pailin. But that will only last for another week if not sooner.

Carolyn   September 11th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Where in the heck is Karl Rove?......Oh, we'll hear him criticizing and whinning tomorrow.
GO OBAMA!

YaYa   September 11th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

I almost feel sorry for McCane . . . . . I think that he was basically a decent, (yet flawed) man. His problems stem from that fact that he feels like he's OWED the position of POTUS. I think he feels it's his due for time spent in captivity. I also think he's seeking a sort of validation.

That being said, he's essentially signed a deal with the devil (Bush, Cheaney, Rove) to make it happen. Now he's just become their tool.

I'm so proud it was Obama's idea and it took place. On a day like that, America should stand together as one, no matter what skin color, religion, or party.

But Obama's idea was one more evidence of his greatness and his judgment.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are repeatedly deceiving, manipulating, and flat-out lying. And polls are showing that some of those lies are convincing voters.
Palin says she opposed the "Bridge to Nowhere"—when in fact she fully supported it. McCain says Obama wants sex-ed for kindergartners—when he voted for a bill to protect them from sexual predators.

It is sad that some of you try to politicize it in this blog.
It tells me that you don’t even understand the symbolic nature of this decision.

David, Silver Spring, MD   September 11th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

I am saddened by this "today we pause, but tomorrow the gloves are off" talk. It reminds me of the ad that McCain did the day of Obama's acceptance speech.

Truth is, neither side should have to be so ashamed of their behavior that they need to call a truce on a day like this.

Talk about the issues, explain what you want to do, and let the voters decide which they prefer. Instead we get ads full of false outrage about lipstick-wearing pigs and sex ed for kids.

McCain has often talked about "honor." Let's see that honor. Drop the fake hyperbolic indignation. Talk to us as adults talk to adults. Talk to us with respect. Don't try to scam us. Don't try to trick us into voting for you. Put the interest of your country above your self interest.

Sue in MI   September 11th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

Another example of Obama's reaching across the aisle, heh? Good for him! And McCain managed to keep him promise not to campaign today, once he left Pennsylvania, after campaigning. The man has no scruples left, it seems.
What this day reminds me of is that 9-11 opened wide the door for Bush to abuse the Constitution. A sad day indeed for America.

Canada for Obama/Biden 08   September 11th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I'm glad to see this =) and BTW I agree with the fact that both Obama and McCain love your country, lets talk issues for the next 2 months please :)

robert pulciani   September 11th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Obama's leadership and judgment are clearly visible as he invites McCain to join him at ground zero. these are the qualities we need in our next president to resolve the ills of the last eight years. our country is essentially insolvent under G. Bush – we need a knew CEO with the talent and capacity to bring our country back to solvency. that can only be Obama – McCain is in denial relative the condition of our beautiful United States of Amercia.

Ana   September 11th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

And that one is Obama!!!!! How stately and fitting of his persona that he should reach across the aisle to his opponent and find common ground on such an iconic day of poignant American memories. It is the dawning of a new day and Barack brings a new horizon where our country can work as one nation under a divine power!!!!

Now I just wish I could vote. Americans, it is not only your right but also your civic duty to have a care about the future of your nation and VOTE.

Why are all your photos of today's appearance at ground zero all only McCain? They were both there. I'd like to see some of Obama.

BK   September 11th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

All talk, no substance. We knew Obama would fall in the polls as soon as they took his teleprompter and prepared speeches away. The man can't give a straight answer. He talks just like a lawyer. You don't know where he stands on anything because he talks out of both sides of his mouth. UUH UUH UUH.
The former senator that called Gov. Palin a cocky wacko. What kind of idiots are we sending to Washinton. It seems that a lot of Obama supporters talk like this man. SCARY!

She hired a former lobbyist for a pipeline company to help oversee a multibillion-dollar deal with that same company.

And she sent campaign e-mails on her city hall account while serving as mayor of Wasilla — conduct for which she later turned in an oil commissioner on ethics charges.

Let's see if Obama gets ANY credit from the media for this bipartisan meeting. I heard CNN mention earlier that it was a "nice" idea, and wondered who thought of it. In fact, thinking maybe Bloomberg was the Orchestrator.

This shows that Obama can reach out, and I don't think he did it for political reasons. I think this is where his heart really is..

I think Obama is a great man, and WILL BE our next president.

Cam   September 11th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

If only this kind of mutual admiration and respect for the people of America was followed the other 364 days of the year.

I'm sure Republicans will disagree with this, but suggesting this idea to McCain was a very "Presidential" thing to do considering that both camps are saying it is about change and reaching across the aisle.

Hoping   September 11th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Does no one find it just a little bit of a coincidence that Palin's son is 1- going to Iraq now, when they are supposed to start withdrawing troops slowly ( as per Barack Obama) and 2- leaving on 911. As a man or woman to use her son as a photo op is despicable.

As a 44 year old white soccer mom of 3, I find Sarah Palin disgusting.

Kay   September 11th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Obama supporters:

The best thing you can do right now to help Obama with the election is to go to his website and find out what you can do to help get people registered to vote.

You can also sign up to help get out the vote on November 4th.

Rather than arguing with right-wing bloggers posing as independents, we should be spending our time focused on what matters: November 4th.

Don't be distracted.

Obama/Biden '08!

Audrey Fryer   September 11th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

On this day when you reflect on 911 – may I ask you people – what did you feel and do that day – were you not all scared, did you not all run for cover, were you not all crying (not knowing when the next attack or from whom it was coming), were you not all fearful; then please, and I do mean please, think what the Iraqi people (who had nothing to do with 911) have been feeling for over 2000 days (not one day), 2000 days and they are still scared, still crying, still fearful, and still afraid of the next attack. Remember this when you want to continue with a Government of war pushers ( Bush & Company, McCain and Palin). For heavens sake people choose correctly – the rest of the World is counting on you.

I am very very afraid because what happens in the U.S.A. has major ramifications throughout the World.

This should be a call to both parties to stop the juvenille behavior both sides have been engaged in recently.

However we all know that that is simply a pipe-dream.

I applaud both gentlemen on putting political differences aside, if only for 1 day.

In the end, We are all in fact Americans!

heather4Obama   September 11th, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Probably we would not have had 911 if Bush had not used poor judgement and given the Afghan govt 43 million dollars in may 2001 to fight drugs...which they instead used to supply the taliban army and attack us. Talk about a complete lack of judgement and McCain the Insane voted with him. I cannot believe how easily brain washed and silly anyoine would be to even vote for McInsane.

You know what, 9/11 should be this way for every presidential election. I think both candidates should NOT campaign on this day, and just come together.

When the attack happened the enemy didn't care whether we were Republicans or Democrats, or even American. This reminds everyone in the heat of the election that we are all Americans, and citizens of the world.

Hmm you know I once thought Obama was all for show...but now that I am starting to see more of him, I must say I am impressed.

On the other hand McCain has greatly dissapointed me this election season. I have felt like I was in an alternate universe where the McCain I am seeing now could not possibly be the same man I so respected a few years ago.

I am not completely sold on Obama but McCain you have completely lost me...

Obama you have only a few days to convince me...let me see what you can do!

I find it funny, that on September 11th, with all that's going on, and how both sides wear there pride for the military on their sleeves, not one candidate decided to pay a visit to any military personnel while on their trip to NYC. Yes, we are here, and for Senator Obama, We were right across the street from Pres. Clinton's office. We heard the cheers, and were all hoping you would stop by and say hell. Alas, that never took place.
