McCain, Obama joint appearance planned last week

McCain and Obama visited Ground Zero Thursday.
McCain and Obama visited Ground Zero Thursday.

(CNN) - The idea of a joint September 11 visit to Ground Zero by both John McCain and Barack Obama was in the works for less than a week, according to both campaigns.

Obama suggested the idea to McCain Friday afternoon when the Democratic presidential nominee called his Republican counterpart Friday, the day after the GOP convention ended, to congratulate him on his convention speech.

"[Obama] called after the convention speech, and over the course of the
discussion they mutually agreed to meet jointly in New York," said McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds.

The two men went to Ground Zero Thursday, entering the site together. Both candidates exchanged brief remarks and spoke with some of those on hand for the commemoration.

It was refreshing to see the two Presidential candidates call a cease fire for this day of remembrance of our fallen fellow citizens. Surrogates and mouth pieces for both parties, however, haven't observed this truce. I can already see some saying Michele Obama is not as patriotic because she wasn't there in NYC but Cindy McCain was. Some may even say McCain showed more patriotism by bending down and placing his rose in the Reflecting Pool while Obama tossed his in. As Sen. Obama said, enough is enough. We are all good, patriotic Americans and we are observing this day with sadness of those who fell.

Being that Obama grandfather that raised him was white and served in military I am really surpised by your comment. Tell the truth your real name is Karl Rove!

According to the transcripts of the Gibson interview tonight, Palin thinks that Georgia is a member of NATO. How low has this country sunk? Do we even have quality control for those in power anymore??

7 years anniversary and counting. If the GOP are as tough as they claim to be on national security, where's Bin Laden?

    Please....

GOP = Party of empty campaign slogans
    McCain = Panderer in chief
    Palin = McCain's prop

the polls are dropping? HA, they don't even take into consideration the fact that many American's don't even use landlines anymore...they use cell phones which are not used in the polls! and it is quite clear that everyone without a landline (mostly the 18-29 year olds) are voting for obama. Keep relying on the polls for mccain to win, it just is not going to happen.

    To Missy –

You feel sorry for Palin because her son is leaving for Iraq today of all days?
You don't find it a tad suspicious that he's leaving during a presidential run and on 911?

CNN your moderation of the posts is clearly biased. How could you post something from someone identifying himself as "John McCain" clearly putting something out that is in bad taste regarding Gov Palin .......once again.

This is clearly another sign of the desparation of Democrats trying to do anything to destroy this Lady.

Obama is a smart, kind, good person.

To bad I can not say the same of many of his supporters I see in these postings.

You may loose your best, and OUR best chance for the first black commander in chief of the united states.

Your hatred and your stupid comments and actions WILL do it.

BUT I AM SURE YOU will blame the right for it and not the true cause of a potential Obama defeat.

The left will be to blame.

I am and so many of my friends sick of being called stupid by the left because of THE LEFTS own stupidity, being called a hatemonger BY THE LEFT that they themselves use hate speech the USA is tiered of it.

You claim the right is stupid you are the ones who don't GET IT.

WE are tire of the lefts good intentions to help those in the middle and lower rungs of society but SO SICK OF THEM LOOKING DOWN THEIR NOSE AT THEM AT THE SAME TIME.

Your actions are more evident than your shallow words.

Can you take a hint from these TWO great Americans and CANT YOU GIVE IT A REST FOR AT LEAST ONE DAY??

I agreed that it was remarkable for both to be together for today. I also agree with Missy that we should all pray for the safety of Sarah Palin' son and for all the others who are out there in warfront. May God continue to guide our sisters and brothers in uniform.

And for you Reagan who made a comment to Elizabeth, that is a senseless comment made by you.

    Vote Obama/Biden 08.

Where was Obama at the 10 town hall meetings he said he would attend? Why does Obama keep saying 'I would debate that anytime and turns every one of them down? All talk. No wonder he won the talker poll. Thats all he does.

To Jack. There have been negative comments from both sides. It is really sad actually. Please honor the fallen. Please don't further this country down the same callous, cynical road we have been going down for quite some time.

Kudos to everyone who refrained from partisan attacks on this one. God Bless America.

I find it insulting that both politician are using what happend on 9/11 as a tool for their campaign. People often ask for real change, but they keep on voting for the same politician over and over. Elect new people into office not the same old politicians that promise change, but just give us more of the same. We should be ashamed of our selves, we ask for change that we don't really want to make happend.

pj – Michelle Obama was with her children as they start school. Is there something wrong with that? I thought Obama was running for pres, not Michelle. But go ahead and twist Michelle's taking care of her children into something negative.
