Karl Rove is offering unsolicited campaign advice to Obama .
Karl Rove is offering unsolicited campaign advice to Obama .

(CNN) – Karl Rove is again offering unsolicited advice to Barack Obama, this time advising the Democratic presidential nominee to avoid attacking Sarah Palin directly if he hopes to win the White House in November.

“It's a match-up he'll lose," Rove writes Thursday in his regular Wall Street Journal column. "If Mr. Obama wants to win, he needs to remember he's running against John McCain for president, not Mrs. Palin for vice president."

Rove notes past attempts by Democratic presidential nominees to attack the No. 2 on the GOP ticket have largely fell flat, and says the issues Obama is hitting Palin on are ones the Illinois senator is weak on himself.

"If Mr. Obama keeps attacking Mrs. Palin, he could suffer the fate of his Democratic predecessors. These assaults highlight his own tissue-thin résumé, waste precious time better spent reassuring voters he is up for the job, and diminish him — not her," Rove writes.

Specifically, Rove says it is not in Obama's interest to attack the Alaska governor on her lack of experience or the earmarks she has requested — two issues, Rove says, on which voters may also question Obama's record.

Since she was named to the GOP ticket two weeks ago, Obama has rarely called out Palin directly, often attacking both her and McCain together as representing a continuation of President Bush's policies. But in an interview on CNN last week, Obama suggested his executive experience surpassed Palin's.

“My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wasilla, has I think 50 employees," he said. "We've got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – we have a budget of about three times that just for the month."

He also on Sunday called out her claim she is an anti-earmark reformer, saying "I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great…[but] when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change….you can't just make stuff up."

Double Standards, there is one standard for the Old White man and another Standard for the younger Black man..

Can we all be judge the same for using the same words?

I would love to see where Gov Palin keep the money to from the bridge to nowhere that she was against?

I have no love for Rove but, he is right on this. Palin will burn herself out soon enough.

Palin is the one who attacked OBAMA be ridiculing the work of Community Organizers.

Palin has to face the press. How else do we know if she is ready to even stand up and speak at the international level?

Hypocrite Rove, provide the information about the 1000 questions around Palin a candidate packaged by you.

Rove should be in jail for all the atrocities and pain he has caused to this nation.

Corey in ATL   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Karl Rove is the man responsible for getting George W. Bush, the worst president in history, elected twice. Anything Rove says is worthless. He's the mastermind behind America's ongoing culture wars and is a big reason why the future of our country is at stake thanks to his divisive politics and sick ideology. Because of his smear campaigns and dirty political tactics he has divided this country so badly that we may never reach a compromise on anything that matters. I hope Karl Rove enjoys warm places, because there are several rows in he** reserved for him!

Burt   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Wow. The illiteracy in so many of these posts, the partisans flooding a message board, the sheer hatred and venom-spitting… makes me ashamed to be an American. Thanks guys. That's awesome.

Beth2008   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

The Republicans want to just keep Palin's record a secret, because it is not a good one: support for the bridge to nowhere before opposing it, etc. Yet they want to use her so called "reform" background to claim they are agents for change. The republicans are simply trying to lie to people and get away with it. Hopefully people will be smarter than the republicans think they are and say NO to a "Bush third term"

Lisa   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Shut up Rove, nobody cares what you think!

Real Sweedie   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Karl Rove should be in jail, together with Bush, Chaney, and a lot of other people. I can't believe he has a finger in McSame's campaign, he should be ashamed to even talk to that criminal.

I guess Rove doesn't think Palin can fend for herself in this election? The men has to stick up for her because she's a little girl? That's what it sounds like, and that's also what it sounds like when people say that Biden better watch out in the debates so he doesn't come off as a bully. If Palin wants to be VP of the United States, she has to be hard enough to take on people like Putin or Musharraf, and people are worried about Biden taring her apart?
I personally believe that women can do exactly the same thing as men, BUT equality is not just benefits, it comes with downsides too and those downsides are what Palin has to face alone. If she can't do it, then she is not fit to be VP. Simple as that.
Rove is sounding very condescending when he's saying stuff like this, and so does the people that say that Biden better go easy on her…

SONGBIRD MCCAIN   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Many of you Dems simply don't like Rove but the fact remains that many of the techniques he developed are now being used by the Obama campaign and democrats across the country. Regardless of how you feel about the man, he knows what he is talking about, Dems wouldn't be using his campaign strategy's if he didn't!!

What's that Rove? Obama should attack Palin?

I think he can address Palin when she's brought out as some savior for the GOP. Rove is just trying to ligitimize the phony outrage over calling a bad candidate a bad candidate.

AMERICAN PEOPLE OF UNITED STATES

We have to realize we gave 8 years of our lives and power to C grade intellectual to run this country. Its time for us to be smart, nonracial, noncynical to elect a ' A' grade intellectual for next 4 years. ITS OUR TIME. IT HAS TO BE OUR MISSION to send a MESSAGE to every REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN that they can't distract American people with PALIN. As a FELLOW AMERICAN, I do know AMERICANS are smarter than this. OUR COUNTRY IS HEADING WRONG DIRECTION. People WE dont need another C grade intellectual to decide the future of this country.

Dick in Sioux Falls   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

For me, the most frightening thing about Sarah Palin is her Pentecostal Church's teaching that the War in Iraq is a Holy War, hopefully leading up to the War of Armageddon, which will end with Christ's true believers being caught up to meet Him in the Air, in the Rapture.
Sarah Palin believes it's O.K. to attack Barack Obama for some of his Pastor's comments, but calls it sexist to question her own belief in the Final Conflict being scripted by God in Iraq and the Middle East.
If you are not frightened by Sarah Palin's world view, you should be!

Trollmaster   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Any advice Rove gives to Obama, means do the complete opposite.

There will be no harm done by exposing her as a coward that runs from the press like Bush and Cheney ran from Vietnam. The GOP behavior towards her means she has a lot to hide that needs to be exposed so the American people can make a more informed decision.

Diane Panama City Fl   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

so, let me get this straight, Rove is telling Senator Obama not to attack Palin? Ok, then I will. Here goes: the Republicans are all fired up about a ticket comprised on an old, philandering Keating-Five crook; and, an ultra-right wing ideologue with a penchant for guns, and who, as mayor of her small Alaska town, forced rape victims to pay for their own rape kits until the Alaskalegislature put a stop to it. No, this ticket is too big a target not to take some well-deserved shots at it.

Yet another tactic by Mr Rove..
Mr. Rove you may be able to fool half of America with your mind games, but I didn't fall for it the last 8 years, and guess what , not falling for it this time.
Mr. Rove In case you haven't noticed Barack Obama has not attacked Ms. Palin infact never has.n It is a fantasy a LIE created by your corrupt party and you.
Infact it is Ms. Palin who has attacked Barack Obama on all levels. someone she does not even know.
Once again you and your party have hijacked integrity and goodness.
My only solace Mr. Rove, is that, Your Karma is coming.. I hope I'm around to see it.. You are not doing good things..

RHDANIELS   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I am a Republican who has gotton tried of hearing our party appear as if it has not thrown remarks at our opponent, when in fact we have done more dirt talking than them. I have yet to hear a laid out plan from our candidates McCain and Palin. So Mr. Rove maybe you ought to give this same advice to our canidates as well, that is to be fair. I agree with McCain on some issue and not on others. When picking Palin, even though I am a woman, I feel that she is not ready to be our VP and surely not our President if McCann is elected and something happens to where he would not be able to continue as President.

Polly   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

This is a smoke screen to somehow suggest the the lipstick comment had something to do with Palin. The feigned outrage by the Right doesn't stand to gain from having the criminal Karl Rove rushing to the rescue.

Ruth   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

The american people are not stupid; the democrats are so scared; they thought they had the ticket with a black president. They could have had a woman for VP BUT Obam with his almighty wisdom Obama blew that one. So how much more will he screw up. McCain have the guts to step out and name Palin VP. I would be willing to bet Palin will shine well when it is all said and done. For those who do not want a woman in the white house. Sooner than later they will be one come this fall.

The american people are tired of the democrats and their manipulate moves in congress so they can win the white house again. They do not care nothing about the American people it is obvious. Shame on you DEMS. LOSERS!!!!! Take your hollywood types and put them where the sun does not shine. The fact is the majority of them in Hollywood act irresponsibly so who cares what they think. Hollywood go play, thats what you best and let the real americans decide 2008

April   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

You may like or dislike Rove but if I was "the clown" I most certainly will refrain from bashing Palin. Palin is not Hillary and if "the clown" and obamabots continue to do so, as Rove said, you will definitely be packing your bags to Chicago which we know you will at the end anyway. Women will not stand for that and most women already label "the clown" as sexist anyway so he is now solidifying his position. As for Matt Demon, we do not know what you are thinking. You must learn to separate your opinion and anger from the way you felt about women in general. This really shows us women, even though we support you in your craft, if the table was turned, you will rather "call us names" than support us. Yes, we understand the freedom of speech and all, but spewing it off in the air wave suggest you too, is a sexist.
When "the clown", looses, it would not be anyone's fault but his own, DNC and superdelegates. The man is not experience enough to be even in the second spot of the presidential ticket and now that we are beginning to know the messenger, we are definitely separating the message from the messenger. Without teleprompter, "the clown" definitely cannot put two words together without puting his foot in his mouth. Now it resignates what Hillary said. We need someone who is ready from "DAY ONE." WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LET AN INTERN WHO HOPE TO LEARN ON THE JOB MOVE INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. THREE AM CALLS DEMAND AN EXPERIENCE CANDIDATE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO THINK ON HIS FEET. OBAMA IS NOT THAT CANDIDATE AND EVERYONE IS BEGINNING TO SEE AND KNOW THAT "A COLOSAL INJUSTICE" HAD BEEN DONE TO THIS COUNTRY BY NOT CHOOSING THE CANDIDATE THAT WE ELECTED WHO HAS EXPERIENCE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO RUN THIS ELECTION. YES, WE WILL LIKE TO SEE A BLACK PRESIDENT, BUT WE WILL NOT DO SO IN THE DETRIMENT OF OUR COUNTRY WITH AN INEXPERIENCE CANDIDATE.
MCCAIN/PALIN 2008 AND HILLARY 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam- Chicago   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I believe Karl Rove, probably the only time that i will side with him!

Obama needs to wake up, and read between the lines. Sarah was brought to punch his anger button, and make him fall into the nasty pool of politics, but he needs to remain focus, continue the fine job, in hammering the real true change that could ever take over the oval office; in recent years.

Big Bill from Brooklyn   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

If Obama is stupid enough to take advice from Rove he deserves to lose the election. Obama does not need to attack Palin. The press will do it for him. Obama needs to avoid the old sexist phrases about putting lipstick on a pig. If he wants to go there at all, he should simply note that a pit bull is a pit bull with or without lipstick. But that line best comes from the guy running against Palin, a guy named Biden last I heard. Obama needs to remind the Republic that putting a person a heartbeat away from the Presidency is the most important task a candidate has on the campaign trail. And ask the public if McCain made the wisest possible choice. And let it go at that.

Robert   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I'm a Democrat who loathes Karl Rove but he has point here. The American people according to the media do not elect Vise Presidents, granted a large portion of American people go for the glitter instead of the facts but in the end they will pulling the trigger for the President.

When they see Obamas name on the ticket they will hesitate, think about his race, but then punch his card for his convictions and Presidential appearance. By the way, Obama had a few TV moments behind a podium lately speaking about issues and showing his intelligence. He is looking very Presidential these days…..

Theresa   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Call CNN and MSNBC and tell them you want to hear about the "real" issues facing America not about lipstick on a pig. Whether you are a Dem or Rep, let the media know that this e-entertainment coverage of the campaigns will not be tolerated.

islandmisfit   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Spoken like a true Republican strategist. It's obvious that if Palin is "attacked" she will be exposed as inexperienced and unfit for the VP position. The advice Rove gives is just another way of trying to divert attention away from another unqualified Republican, (like Bush) . I only hope the American people, (Republicans and Democrats) realize that this isn't a popularity contest. We need some one in the VP slot (regardless of party) that is ready to lead should something happen to the President. Palin is not ready for that by any stretch of the imagination.

Sandy in Rhode Island   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Someone should lock Karl Rove up and throw away the key. He is like a drug to the Republican Party. Obama is the cure for that addiction. Karl remainds me of the Grinch. His life centers on hate and fear mongering.

Kevin   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

McCain supporters still think experience beats judgement. Interesting. You have two types of experience, good experience and bad experience. Good experience is McCain sometimes opposing Bush and the republicans. Bad experience here is McCain voting with Bush 90% of the time. I'd say his bad experience strongly over takes his whole experience, which means that he doesn't have the JUDGEMENT!

Karl Rove is a criminal slimeball who has orchestrated all the disgraceful negative ads that are nothing but pure lies. He was Cheney's lap dog and was directly involved in the illegal blowing of the cover of CIA agent Valerie Pflame as retalitaion against her husband who publically stated the facts used to convince Americans and Congress to start a war in Iraq were false. He ignored a Congressional subpoena to testify before the Judiciary Committee. Nothing he does or say can be trusted. Even his colleagues says he is a person with no ethics and will stoop to any level to get what he wants. It says a lot about McCain's lack of character that he has let Rove run his nasty, deceitful campaign. Rove is a thug and McCain has no integrity left by letting this criminal run his campaign strategy. McCain is now acting like Rove. McCain will say and do anything out of desperation to get elected. McCain has destroyed his creditability and has proven he is not Presidential-worthy. No Way No How No McCain. We are sick of your negative ads, your messages of no substance, your ridiculous pick of an extremist nut from Alaska for VP, and your constant flip-flopping on what you believe. Your words change based on who you are in front of. Your record speaks for you. You are nothing more than another Bush and you have no credible plans for cleaning up the Republican mess of the last 8 years. McCain is too old, too unhealthy, too out-of-touch with real Americans, and has proven he has no judgment qualities or character in choosing the corrupt and scaringly unqualified Palin. Kab   September 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Rove is right on this one.
Leave Palin to the side let the media and the american people vet her. She would not survive it. Cos she is a phony.
Obama's focus should be on the issues here on out. I don't even think attacking Mccain is necessary at this point. Like one person said on here earlier, its a shame other Dems have gone AWOL. They should be the ones unleashing hell to McCain & Palin.
Obama: he wants to seal this thing done one thing and one thing only. Come up with proposed solutions to the ample problem facing America and expecially the battleground states.
The economy (Taxes, Deficit, and govt spending control)
Ethics reform (Govt under Bush has become a shame)
health care
Jobs : green tech new jobs, infrastucyure development etc
Wars ( End Iraq and how, win in Afgan and how)
Border security and immigration reform ( Suggest solutions that do not disenfranchise Hispanics but still yet protect our border in the name of Natl. Security)
Eductation.

These are real problems and McCain has no solutions. He is interested in playing politics and the blame game. (Not solutions)
No way, no how, NO CLUE, McCain/Palin

wingman11   September 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

I think Rove putting in his two cents at this point shows the Republicans "strategy" regarding Palin. First they portray Palin as tough, calling her "Barracuda" and "pitbull". At the same time, the Republicans shield her from the press, making up excuses like "the media is after her", trying to elicit sympathy for her, I guess. Now two weeks later, no one knows what her views are on any major issues or even if she has any views at all! Then they make up this controversy that Obama called her a pig, again to elicit sympathy from the public because the "big, bad black politician" is attacking a woman. Now you've got Rove actually telling Obama not to attack her, again to drive home the fact that Obama was attacking her when in fact he wasn't. (Note: McCain used the same "lipstick on a pig" phrase when speaking about Hillary Clinton but apparently its ok when a Republican uses it against a Democrat). I don't know about you but all I've seen to date is a VP candidate who can't campaign on her own, can't deal with the press and can't deal with the realities of American politics. Is this woman who we want to be one step away from the Presidency of the United States of America? I don't think so.

Rove has already done Barack's work for him when he said that Gov Kane wasn't qualified for VP because he has been a governor of Virginia(more population and higher budget than Alaska) for less than 3 years and was only the mayor of Richmond(many times larger than Wasila) before that. When did Obama attack Palin? Where is Karl is getting this information? I guess if he repeats it enough times people will actually believe that Obama attacked Palin..Can't you see he is just trying to distract us from the real issues. God please save us from the evils of Bush,Cheney,Mcain,Palin and Karl.

Rich   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Someone please locj up this war criminal I am sick of seeing and hearing him. Why dont you stop covering the war criminal CNN. What gives other than the fact he has a warrant from congress what else is their really to say about him other than he's should be arrested. People go to jail for parking tickets and this war criminal is walking the streets. Pathetic!!!

RG   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

It is a proven fact that Palin's is already lying about her record and it is causing people to spend too much time addressing her when she should not be that important. If she was not known on the first place, and most of the very first accomplishments she has listed are not accurate, then why should people be so concerned about her? People who well informed and rational will hopefully see the reality, and if Senator Obama keeps being who he is, there is no reason to worry. As of this moment, he is still the most positive candidate out there even though most of his own supporters want him to attack. He will be fine as long as the new generation of voters gets out there to vote and he keeps addressing the real issues!

Tim M   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Karl Rove is a McCain campaign supporter and "unofficial" advisor. Please, CNN, do your jobs rather than just taking Karl Rove's transparent concern trolling as serious news. This election coverage is depressing and an insult to all American citizens.

We've Paid Him Enough   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Dear Mathew,

What do you mean he's not on anyone's payroll this year. The man headed an office to re-elect George W. Bush with everyone's tax dollars (Democrats included) WHILE at the White House. How brazen is that?

No, we should never take Karl's advice. He's the scum of the earth and should be under a jail.

od   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Someone please tell Mr Rove he can keep his advice to himself.

Maryland for Barack   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

While I think Rove is a lying, cheating … you get the idea, he actually has a point.

With Sarah Palin brought into the race, there has been a shift in attention from Obama and his policies to Sarah Palin (not even to McCain). She has drawn more publicity, and that is helping the Republicans and hurting the Democrats. Obama should be focusing on his issues and dealing only with McCain. That's how he'll get back his momentum and win. Leave a surrogate to deal with Palin - I recommend H. Clinton, so that the Republicans can't claim it was a sexist attack.

But Obama, you need to focus on YOUR message. It works.

Dick in Sioux Falls   September 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

McCain/Palin/Bush all oppose the Constitutional role for the Federal Goverment to "Promote the General Welfare" of its people.
McCain/Palin/Bush oppose Federal Aid to Education.
This Unholy Trinity oppose negot iating World Trade Agreements that protect American workers from having our manufacturing jobs carted overseas.
Sarah Palin sounds like the reincarnation of a female Dick Cheney. She, too, accepts huge checks from Big Oil, and at the same time campaigns hard for off-shore drilling and drilling in the ANWR.
She, too, has wrongly used her power to persecute anyone who for any reason falls from her favor. We don't need another such Power Broker operating from the relative anonymity of he Vice President's Office.

DWoods   September 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Why would Obama take advice from you, when you are actually schooling Palin? Although, your advice is sound and correct, Democrats know to steer clear of anything you say or do. Just ask Valerie Plame and hubby.

Brilliant Rove! Well done. No wonder thay call you the Master Mind. You write an article about giving advice to Obama about not attacking Palin…When in fact he hasn't been attacking Palin…Brilliant.

Next I suppose you're going to write another advice column…telling Obama not to be a sexist…When he's not being a sexist!

Here's some advice. Get a good lawyer, because soon or later they are coming after you! Last but not least…Don't drop the soap!

carolyn - utah   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

The only reason the Repulbicans continue to make these outlandish statements is as a way to distract from discussing the real issues facing this country. The media are feeding right into it. If discussion occurs about the economy, the war, and where this country is headed, the Repulicans know they are in trouble.

DG   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

If the McCain campaign continues to prevent the media from asking Sarah Palin any questions, I think the media should refuse to put anything about her on TV. If she can't answer questions that the public need to know the answers to, how can she possibly be considered a serious candidate for VP. Think people!

texas democrat   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Karl Rove is a mastermind for the mccain ticket but he can only master the minds of the stupid. How can a person be called tough as a pitbull and yet she can not answer any questions on her own. People get real no one has to spell this out to you . This woman is not qualified and was only chosen because mccain wanted the hillary voters.

Why give this man any 'airtime'? He should be in jail, he's in contempt of a congressional subpoena and yet people run his 'political advice' and have him on their news programs as a political adviser… please stop placating this man by giving him any credibility or airtime.

Paul in Dallas   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Would you please close your trap Mr. Rove? You are the "architect" (no offense to architects) of this nation's suffering. You look and sound too much like Rush Limbaugh. Palin is running for president. McCain is nothing without her. Time to unleash the hounds of hell. Palin/McCain is a hate and lie ticket. May it perish.

Beto, Seattle   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Obama would be wise to take that advice, no matter that it came from Mr. Rove, it is still good advice. If any of Obama's followers gave the same advice, they would show signs of progress. But, Obama's followers don't know any better. All they know is how to sling mud.

Dion   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Sarah Palin was definitely not a good choice for McCain and it is sad that judgement on this one was very poor.
He woudl have stood a better chance choosing someone else. She definitely a turn off and has turned my mind form John McCain.
I don't want to a pitbull in the white house I want to someone who can reach accross party lines and resolve the issues that are hurting our country. Very disappointed with the choice and I am a woman.
Another problem I have with Sarah Palin is that, being a mother with a child with special needs she should not have taken up the position of VP. What time is she going to have to spend with that child? Or is it that it is not hers? I cannot imagine a mother not wanting to be around her child with such needs. She certainly does not act like a mother who is concerned about her little boy.
A mother is suppose to be a nurturing person not a pitbull.
Very disappointed and McCain has lost a vote.

Democrats.
Why are your comments so seething & full of anger and hate? I guess you're all just representing what your party truly stands for…a bunch of complaining yet not producing any change yourselves. You've had majority in the house & senate now since, what, 2006? Yet your new Democratic dominant Congress has the lowest approval ratings in history (what is it, 9% approval right now, or is that how much you've accomplished?)

Rove is right on this one… all of your questions about Palin's lack of experience for the VICE pres job, are exactly what the rest of us are questioning about your PRESIDENTIAL nominee — experience??

Get over it. You all are a bunch of whiners.

BTW, Rudy NYC, Rove isn't making these comments on a day when a truce was called, his comments were in an article printed in the Wall Street Journal! Take it up with the WSJ if you don't like it.

Truth hurts doesn't it Dems?

Min in NC   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The same thing could be said for Palin that is said for Obama, it doesn't matter that he's inexperienced because he can align himself with people that do have the experience, therefore we should vote for him. Palin will learn alot as VP and should she have to "be in charge", well I'm sure she would do exactely what Obama's doing, getting advice on the serious issues from people who have experience. Obama needs to be careful making statements about someone else making stuff up or changing their minds or actions just to get elected, thanks to the media every word he has said ,we have heard, we know how he has backtracked on some of his issues.

DC worker   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Peggy Noonan was right. Palin as VP is BS and a gimmick. To distract us from the fact that McCain is offering 4 more years of Bush policies. Meanwhile, they are USING Palin. Do you think they will stand by her when they don't need her anymore?? The fact that all these conservatives are champions of feminism now is an even bigger joke.

chip   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

It's nice to see the uplifting comments by the peace-loving, issue-oriented equal opportunity lefites on this discussion board.

Only one or two posts that I've read so far objectively analyze the story as it is presented.

Most are just repeating the same derogatory comments heard in the Democratic talking points or made by Keith Olbermann, only with even more cynicism and vulgarity.

Had Obama used his great judgment, he would have chosen Hillary as a running mate, not the 4th place finisher in the primaries. Had he done that, the numbers for the Democrats would have been overwhelming and Sarah Palin probably wouldn't be the VP pick.

But, if he had chosen Hillary, McCain would have probably gone with Lieberman … game, set, match!

Over the last couple of days, I've also been hearing so much static from the separation of church and state crowd that "Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Thanks for the Bible lesson.

A woman gets selected as the VP candidate and the party that claims to champion women's rights and equal treatment feel an insatiable need to destroy her.

The politics of personal destruction rears its ugly head again.

Have a great day and please learn to spell and type.

I rarely agree with Rove but I believe he is right. I hope Obama gets back on track.

I'm ready for some inspiration. Town hall meetings are good for McCain. Obama shines with big crowds. How about another send off because Demos lost momentum after the Convention. Let's have another big rally in a big stadium with Obama, Biden, the Clintons, Gore, Kerry, maybe even Kennedy and Oprah. The focus would be "Real Change - Ending the Bush/McCain Era"

Let's get creative. Get back on message, Remind people that the GOP always stoops to low levels to win. That's not change we need!

it is ridiculous and sad that our society has gotten to this point when we can allow some woman, whose only qualifications are her tight skirts and references to being a hockey mom, run for vice president.
McCain is clearly using this lady for his political advantage, and Palin almost seems to dum to realize this. what is a 'hockey mom, anyway? who came up with that line? This is the USA where people watch MLB, NFL, and NBA. since this is the case being a hockey mom wont cut it. even if McCain were elected his age is such that having this person as the potential next president of the USA would be disasterous. unfortunately the combination of republican greed and the color of obama's skin may make all this come true.

Working in Texas   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Of course, this is Karl Rove. He's just using the same tactics: first, lie about the situation, then lie again and again. He knows that most Americans aren't political junkies; all they will hear is "Obama should stop attacking Palin" — that's what he's trying to convince average Americans. He's getting into their minds subliminally by lying: give advice to Obama to stop doing something that Obama isn't doing.

What I want to know is: Where are Obama's surrogates in all of this? What the heck is wrong with Biden? Why are the Democrats putting Obama on an island and leaving him at the mercy of the entire Republican attack wing? The only Democrat who tries to help is Rendell, and even he gave a compliment to Palin. TAKE OFF THE GLOVES, FOLKS, this is a championship fight. Start acting like you want to win!

Danny   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I really dont think he should be opening his mouth, one on September 11th and second about a democratic candidate. This just shows how the republicans use 9/11 to scare up votes and put it as a trademark.

Rove for Prison '08!

Regardless of what people may think of Rove's tactics, the man is a genius when it comes to elections and got Bush elected…twice. He's not on anyone's payroll this year, maybe Obama should listen.

Emily   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

What happened to our issues? Karl Rove advice? That's what made this country's politics go down in the past with his advice to Bush.

What happened to our issues? I want to hear discussions around issues, no more of these personality attacks, gossips, etc.

Yesterday, I saw two refreshing videos, one is from Michelle Obama, advocating for working mothers and how tough it is for us these days. We can not take days off to take care of kids or aging parents, and that was right on. I want to hear more from her. She is like Hillary Clinton, very smart and caring.

Another one is from Ron Paul and Ralph Nader, about why they are trying to run.If they could really bring this charade back to 1) economy, 2) foreign issues, 3) environment / energy, etc….

But Karl Rove, no value add to sway this race.

mk in coning ny   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

This is typical of Karl Rove. He's the spin meister from hell. He's also a criminal. This is a man who should be serving time in jail. Yet he continues to mastermind the politcal strategy of the Rebublican party. Hasn't he done enough damage to the integrity of our nation already?

Obama has not attacked Sarah Palin. John McCain used this very phrase to refer to Hillary Clinton's policy's on atleast four occasions. There are video clips to prove it. This incident is what's referred to in psycological terms as "projection". Except that in Rove's case it's more likely intentional.

I agree that a poll should be taken reflecting his popularity. Although I think he's weaseled his way back into favor with a lot the Rebublicans. Bush is the ultimate bad guy at present while Rove still roves behind the scenes, sewing duplicity whenever he opens his mouth.

KLJ   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This is amazing. He is trying to present himself as this unbiased columnist. He continues to be a player behind the scenes for the republican Party and the McCain campaign. He is also the same man who 1-2 months ago said Gov. Kaine of Virginia was to inexperienced becasue he had been mayor of a small city (Richmond population 200,000) and Governor for a short period of time (2 years). He has been quoted as saying Gov. Palin is qualified because of her experience as mayor (Wasilla population 7,000) and her tenure as Gorvernor (2 years). Need I say any more!

We can all agree that Washington has really screwed the pooch.

Electing someone whose spent 26 of the last 34 years of Republican control we can certainly rule out McCain.

He's old and has no clue about the issues today. He's still fighting on behalf of the same issues we've been talking about for 40 years and meanwhile we're losing ground with China and the rest of the world. He seems content on starting more wars that got us in the economic jam we're in now. It's more of the same.

Seems to me that the Republicans are at times still fighting the civil war. They seem obsessed with talking about race, sex, morals, and history - they have taken their eye off the ball.

If we Democrats lose this election in November, Shame On Us!!!!!!!!!!

Jacob   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This is outrageous, coming from someone who as disrespected this country by being aided to be above the law!!!! Serving and contesting for an election is no more honorable, about the truth and the concerns of the majority of the American, it as to be lie your way through it, create deception and divisiveness, bully people and show how much dirt you can throw. I guess other countries must be asking themselves, is this the same DEMOCRACY we want to enforce them to follow? It is a shame.

I thought election was about who has the best ideas, goal and is ready to lead the country to a better future, but it seems to me that the voice of the good people of this country has been so silenced that they can't even stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, do not reduce our country to a personality contest. Well, in a country where the American Idol contest is more popular and spoken about than what affect the lives of ordinary people in this country and around the world, no wonder that why people are taking advantage off.

I thought McCain prefered the Small-towns-Rural-Area debates style, but now he is a celebrity, and the celebrity format of large crowd is now what he needs. People wake up, that is how he is going to dump you once he gets what he needs. Haven't they dumped you enough, well, probably not yet enough.

Hey Rove, just pray that McCain wins in November, otherwise, I know that the American public can't wait for you to anwser all the questions and lies that you and your party as put us through in the past 8 years. And to inform you, keep pouring out your stupidity, deceit and deception, remember that the only constant thing that rules is TRUTH.

With the fooolishness of those that are been lied to, I can tell you that other countries are looking at us and laughing:

China, will say, they have not learned from the mistake, let us get them more into debt, distract them and subdue the little countries to gain country.
India is saying, lets give the best education to our own as they get divided more on who should privatize or not.
South American countries are in waiting to take as many jobs as possible, you only need to tell them lies, because if you tell them the truth and even show them the result of lies, they don't care they prefer to whine.

The world and countries that lobby us are sure watching and waiting to see the next best trick of lies to tell us, so that they can take more jobs, give more grief to those who will lose morethan ever had.

Rove, wish you the best after November, because one thing will sure happen, you either will get through this world and congress that has not held you accountable, but you sure will be answerable to the greater One that gave you an opportunity to serve, but misused the power.

Thanks CNN for accepting my comment, or this truth is also to hard for you to swallow. As many that can speak the truth more, the better it will be for the country.

Does any intelligent , educated person out there really give a "hoot" about what Matt Damon or any of the rest of the "Hollywood celebrities" think politically? What could they seriously know about protecting and running this great country. Most of them, and I said "most", do not derserve to live here anyway. All they ever talk about is how bad of a place it is…well, they certainly would not be where they are now if they resided in any other country. Jane Fonda should never have been allowed back into this country ever! I say if they think this country is so bad, why don't they GET OUT!

Csokas   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Rove needs to get his facts straight and if CNN was doing their job, they'd have skipped this article because it is factually inaccurate. Barack Obama has not attacked Palin.

I heard my own radio station 710KIRO in Seattle actually say to their listeners that if they want to learn more about the candidates, then they should look up the candidates websites and go to congressional reports, etc. Pardon me, but while I don't mind doing extra research to make sure I'm comfortable with my vote, my job is a funding coordinator at a leasing company. Their job is to report factual news. They've won some Edward R. Murrow Awards, but I think, with that statement, they - and any news agency that feels the same way - should return them and accept no more. Edward R. Murrow turned over in his grave when he heard that.

To Freedom Lovin Patriot….

YOU SAID IT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Javier   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Country First. McCain has 26 Years of Senator experience with military background. Obama has none.

Marie   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

The fact that Palin and MCain have so many Bush advisors orchestrating every move and annnouncement on the Republican pause, should give most people pause. These are the same people who micromanaged Bush into office….twice…and where has that gotten us? They are doing the same thing again…forget about the issues, and just lie your way into office. I didn't fall for it with Bush, and will not with McCain. Do people not see a pattern here????? Do not be fooled again, have the past 8 years taught people nothing??

brenda   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

okay people. have you even considered that larl rove's advise may be an attempt to get obama to continue to smear palin? you know…reverse psychology?

Michael in Houston   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Go away Rove…just please go away. And take Commander Bunnypants Bush with you

REPUBLICAN NOT VOTING FOR MCCAIN/PALIN   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Karl Rove is a fine person to be giving advise. Yea - right!!
Thanks - but No Thanks.

The people that are so caught up with McCain/Palin need to look at the people in Alaska. They aren't happy with her. Wait tell her abuse of power charges are complete. Ask the Librarian what happened. Palin is power crazy. If you get in her way she will run you down.

McCain will need a big fork to Moose when this is over!!

We must turn the economy around, create jobs, bring our military home, turn the housing situation around and have affordable heatlh care for all. These are the issues - not how many fish they can catch, animals they can shoot, or people they can fire. McCain/Palin/Bush/Rove

Obama/Biden

MCCAIN 08   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Jaime   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Pat, you must be one of those in the 5 million club that McCain considers wealthy. Do you know how many houses you have?

Mr. Karl Rove, you are the dumest person I have ever see, Obama did not attack Mrs. Palin, the expression "Pig with lipstick is still a pig' is not an attack on Palin. That Expression has been used more than four time by McCain, today you want to used it against Obama. You Republicans, just don't get it. You will loose in November. It is just a matter of time and Americans will discover your dirty politics.

Obama/Biden '08-'12

Jason   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I hate to say I told you so Dems - but . . . at the very least it should have been a Clinton/Obama ticket and then Obama could debate Ms. Alaska beauty queen all he wants, but that's not the case and he needs to attack McCain and now!!!!!

sandee in Portland   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Who in the world would listen to one of the biggest crooks of our time. Obama hasn't attacked Palin and if he's referring to the lipstick topic, he must not be watching the news programs. McCain has used the line many times in the past but when the democrats use the same line, they're sexist.

As an older white woman, I am appalled by the Republican tactics and their campaigning. I can't believe that the majority of Americans are better off than they were 8 years ago……only the wealthy are better off and that is not the majority! WAKE UP PEOPLE…. if you really are worse off now than you were, just think where you'll be in another 4 years if you elect McCain.

In the most important election in the history of our country, people are voting based on gender and name recognition rather than on issues. I challenge any Republican to tell me McCains plan on economy, global warming, health care, etc.

carolflowery   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

is it just me, or isnt obama a liar

Seems that ever since the 30th of August our sweet brothern at the democratic party have had a pig dressed up like Palin on their web site. Complete with brown wig, pearls, make up, and a suit that looks remarkably like the one she was wearing last wed. Of course obama will squirm, and um ahh, say he knew nothing but frankly i’m sick and tired of him and his excuse. What is he going to throw the entire party under the bus? Let’s cook obama’s bacon while the fire’s still hot.

carol kesling   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

karl rove is a pig, just like the rest of his buddies… he should keep his mouth shut!!!! hopefully he will go to jail with bush and cheney.. but then who would talk on fox news???? he should be the last one to give OBAMA advice, maybe he should take some advice and ZIP IT !!!!!!

Dem for unity   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

I am not a Rove fan but he may be on to somthing here. Obama should focus on MCcain and leave the #2 to be battled with Biden. I think Biden can handle her.

Judy in Minnesota   September 11th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

I wouldn't believe anything this guy Rove says. Gee, do ya think he might try and sabotage the Obama campaign?
Pat… dont' think that Mccain or Palin are evil. However, I do think that many of the hacks they surround themselves are mean spirited, dishonest and dishonorable…and neither Mccain or Pain is doing or saying anything to stop it.
I don't know anything about Palin, butwould have thought Mccain would be above this stuff
Obama is as qualified as Mccain. And…he's a whole lot younger and healthier.

Melly   September 11th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

I am tired of hearing about ROVE OR PALIN.
Let's hear about issues. I am going to ignore reading any article about PALIN from now on.
