Karl Rove is offering unsolicited campaign advice to Obama .
Karl Rove is offering unsolicited campaign advice to Obama .

(CNN) – Karl Rove is again offering unsolicited advice to Barack Obama, this time advising the Democratic presidential nominee to avoid attacking Sarah Palin directly if he hopes to win the White House in November.

“It's a match-up he'll lose," Rove writes Thursday in his regular Wall Street Journal column. "If Mr. Obama wants to win, he needs to remember he's running against John McCain for president, not Mrs. Palin for vice president."

Rove notes past attempts by Democratic presidential nominees to attack the No. 2 on the GOP ticket have largely fell flat, and says the issues Obama is hitting Palin on are ones the Illinois senator is weak on himself.

"If Mr. Obama keeps attacking Mrs. Palin, he could suffer the fate of his Democratic predecessors. These assaults highlight his own tissue-thin résumé, waste precious time better spent reassuring voters he is up for the job, and diminish him - not her," Rove writes.

Specifically, Rove says it is not in Obama's interest to attack the Alaska governor on her lack of experience or the earmarks she has requested - two issues, Rove says, on which voters may also question Obama's record.

Since she was named to the GOP ticket two weeks ago, Obama has rarely called out Palin directly, often attacking both her and McCain together as representing a continuation of President Bush's policies. But in an interview on CNN last week, Obama suggested his executive experience surpassed Palin's.

“My understanding is that Gov. Palin’s town, Wasilla, has I think 50 employees," he said. "We've got 2500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe 12 million dollars a year – we have a budget of about three times that just for the month."

He also on Sunday called out her claim she is an anti-earmark reformer, saying "I know the governor of Alaska has been saying she's change, and that's great…[but] when you've been taking all these earmarks when it's convenient, and then suddenly you're the champion anti-earmark person, that's not change….you can't just make stuff up."

Double Standards, there is one standard for the Old White man and another Standard for the younger Black man..

Can we all be judge the same for using the same words?

I would love to see where Gov Palin keep the money to from the bridge to nowhere that she was against?

I have no love for Rove but, he is right on this. Palin will burn herself out soon enough.

Palin is the one who attacked OBAMA be ridiculing the work of Community Organizers.

Palin has to face the press. How else do we know if she is ready to even stand up and speak at the international level?

Hypocrite Rove, provide the information about the 1000 questions around Palin a candidate packaged by you.

Rove should be in jail for all the atrocities and pain he has caused to this nation.

Corey in ATL   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Karl Rove is the man responsible for getting George W. Bush, the worst president in history, elected twice. Anything Rove says is worthless. He's the mastermind behind America's ongoing culture wars and is a big reason why the future of our country is at stake thanks to his divisive politics and sick ideology. Because of his smear campaigns and dirty political tactics he has divided this country so badly that we may never reach a compromise on anything that matters. I hope Karl Rove enjoys warm places, because there are several rows in he** reserved for him!

Burt   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Wow. The illiteracy in so many of these posts, the partisans flooding a message board, the sheer hatred and venom-spitting... makes me ashamed to be an American. Thanks guys. That's awesome.

Beth2008   September 11th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

The Republicans want to just keep Palin's record a secret, because it is not a good one: support for the bridge to nowhere before opposing it, etc. Yet they want to use her so called "reform" background to claim they are agents for change. The republicans are simply trying to lie to people and get away with it. Hopefully people will be smarter than the republicans think they are and say NO to a "Bush third term"

Lisa   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Shut up Rove, nobody cares what you think!

Real Sweedie   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Karl Rove should be in jail, together with Bush, Chaney, and a lot of other people. I can't believe he has a finger in McSame's campaign, he should be ashamed to even talk to that criminal.

I guess Rove doesn't think Palin can fend for herself in this election? The men has to stick up for her because she's a little girl? That's what it sounds like, and that's also what it sounds like when people say that Biden better watch out in the debates so he doesn't come off as a bully. If Palin wants to be VP of the United States, she has to be hard enough to take on people like Putin or Musharraf, and people are worried about Biden taring her apart?
I personally believe that women can do exactly the same thing as men, BUT equality is not just benefits, it comes with downsides too and those downsides are what Palin has to face alone. If she can't do it, then she is not fit to be VP. Simple as that.
Rove is sounding very condescending when he's saying stuff like this, and so does the people that say that Biden better go easy on her...

SONGBIRD MCCAIN   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Many of you Dems simply don't like Rove but the fact remains that many of the techniques he developed are now being used by the Obama campaign and democrats across the country. Regardless of how you feel about the man, he knows what he is talking about, Dems wouldn't be using his campaign strategy's if he didn't!!

What's that Rove? Obama should attack Palin?

I think he can address Palin when she's brought out as some savior for the GOP. Rove is just trying to ligitimize the phony outrage over calling a bad candidate a bad candidate.

AMERICAN PEOPLE OF UNITED STATES

We have to realize we gave 8 years of our lives and power to C grade intellectual to run this country. Its time for us to be smart, nonracial, noncynical to elect a ' A' grade intellectual for next 4 years. ITS OUR TIME. IT HAS TO BE OUR MISSION to send a MESSAGE to every REPUBLICAN POLITICIAN that they can't distract American people with PALIN. As a FELLOW AMERICAN, I do know AMERICANS are smarter than this. OUR COUNTRY IS HEADING WRONG DIRECTION. People WE dont need another C grade intellectual to decide the future of this country.

Dick in Sioux Falls   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

For me, the most frightening thing about Sarah Palin is her Pentecostal Church's teaching that the War in Iraq is a Holy War, hopefully leading up to the War of Armageddon, which will end with Christ's true believers being caught up to meet Him in the Air, in the Rapture.
Sarah Palin believes it's O.K. to attack Barack Obama for some of his Pastor's comments, but calls it sexist to question her own belief in the Final Conflict being scripted by God in Iraq and the Middle East.
If you are not frightened by Sarah Palin's world view, you should be!

Trollmaster   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

Any advice Rove gives to Obama, means do the complete opposite.

There will be no harm done by exposing her as a coward that runs from the press like Bush and Cheney ran from Vietnam. The GOP behavior towards her means she has a lot to hide that needs to be exposed so the American people can make a more informed decision.

Diane Panama City Fl   September 11th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

so, let me get this straight, Rove is telling Senator Obama not to attack Palin? Ok, then I will. Here goes: the Republicans are all fired up about a ticket comprised on an old, philandering Keating-Five crook; and, an ultra-right wing ideologue with a penchant for guns, and who, as mayor of her small Alaska town, forced rape victims to pay for their own rape kits until the Alaskalegislature put a stop to it. No, this ticket is too big a target not to take some well-deserved shots at it.

Yet another tactic by Mr Rove..
Mr. Rove you may be able to fool half of America with your mind games, but I didn't fall for it the last 8 years, and guess what , not falling for it this time.
Mr. Rove In case you haven't noticed Barack Obama has not attacked Ms. Palin infact never has.n It is a fantasy a LIE created by your corrupt party and you.
Infact it is Ms. Palin who has attacked Barack Obama on all levels. someone she does not even know.
Once again you and your party have hijacked integrity and goodness.
My only solace Mr. Rove, is that, Your Karma is coming.. I hope I'm around to see it.. You are not doing good things..

RHDANIELS   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I am a Republican who has gotton tried of hearing our party appear as if it has not thrown remarks at our opponent, when in fact we have done more dirt talking than them. I have yet to hear a laid out plan from our candidates McCain and Palin. So Mr. Rove maybe you ought to give this same advice to our canidates as well, that is to be fair. I agree with McCain on some issue and not on others. When picking Palin, even though I am a woman, I feel that she is not ready to be our VP and surely not our President if McCann is elected and something happens to where he would not be able to continue as President.

Polly   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

This is a smoke screen to somehow suggest the the lipstick comment had something to do with Palin. The feigned outrage by the Right doesn't stand to gain from having the criminal Karl Rove rushing to the rescue.

Ruth   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

The american people are not stupid; the democrats are so scared; they thought they had the ticket with a black president. They could have had a woman for VP BUT Obam with his almighty wisdom Obama blew that one. So how much more will he screw up. McCain have the guts to step out and name Palin VP. I would be willing to bet Palin will shine well when it is all said and done. For those who do not want a woman in the white house. Sooner than later they will be one come this fall.

The american people are tired of the democrats and their manipulate moves in congress so they can win the white house again. They do not care nothing about the American people it is obvious. Shame on you DEMS. LOSERS!!!!! Take your hollywood types and put them where the sun does not shine. The fact is the majority of them in Hollywood act irresponsibly so who cares what they think. Hollywood go play, thats what you best and let the real americans decide 2008

April   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

You may like or dislike Rove but if I was "the clown" I most certainly will refrain from bashing Palin. Palin is not Hillary and if "the clown" and obamabots continue to do so, as Rove said, you will definitely be packing your bags to Chicago which we know you will at the end anyway. Women will not stand for that and most women already label "the clown" as sexist anyway so he is now solidifying his position. As for Matt Demon, we do not know what you are thinking. You must learn to separate your opinion and anger from the way you felt about women in general. This really shows us women, even though we support you in your craft, if the table was turned, you will rather "call us names" than support us. Yes, we understand the freedom of speech and all, but spewing it off in the air wave suggest you too, is a sexist.
When "the clown", looses, it would not be anyone's fault but his own, DNC and superdelegates. The man is not experience enough to be even in the second spot of the presidential ticket and now that we are beginning to know the messenger, we are definitely separating the message from the messenger. Without teleprompter, "the clown" definitely cannot put two words together without puting his foot in his mouth. Now it resignates what Hillary said. We need someone who is ready from "DAY ONE." WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LET AN INTERN WHO HOPE TO LEARN ON THE JOB MOVE INTO THE WHITE HOUSE. THREE AM CALLS DEMAND AN EXPERIENCE CANDIDATE WHO WILL BE ABLE TO THINK ON HIS FEET. OBAMA IS NOT THAT CANDIDATE AND EVERYONE IS BEGINNING TO SEE AND KNOW THAT "A COLOSAL INJUSTICE" HAD BEEN DONE TO THIS COUNTRY BY NOT CHOOSING THE CANDIDATE THAT WE ELECTED WHO HAS EXPERIENCE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO RUN THIS ELECTION. YES, WE WILL LIKE TO SEE A BLACK PRESIDENT, BUT WE WILL NOT DO SO IN THE DETRIMENT OF OUR COUNTRY WITH AN INEXPERIENCE CANDIDATE.
MCCAIN/PALIN 2008 AND HILLARY 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam- Chicago   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I believe Karl Rove, probably the only time that i will side with him!

Obama needs to wake up, and read between the lines. Sarah was brought to punch his anger button, and make him fall into the nasty pool of politics, but he needs to remain focus, continue the fine job, in hammering the real true change that could ever take over the oval office; in recent years.

Big Bill from Brooklyn   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

If Obama is stupid enough to take advice from Rove he deserves to lose the election. Obama does not need to attack Palin. The press will do it for him. Obama needs to avoid the old sexist phrases about putting lipstick on a pig. If he wants to go there at all, he should simply note that a pit bull is a pit bull with or without lipstick. But that line best comes from the guy running against Palin, a guy named Biden last I heard. Obama needs to remind the Republic that putting a person a heartbeat away from the Presidency is the most important task a candidate has on the campaign trail. And ask the public if McCain made the wisest possible choice. And let it go at that.

Robert   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I'm a Democrat who loathes Karl Rove but he has point here. The American people according to the media do not elect Vise Presidents, granted a large portion of American people go for the glitter instead of the facts but in the end they will pulling the trigger for the President.

When they see Obamas name on the ticket they will hesitate, think about his race, but then punch his card for his convictions and Presidential appearance. By the way, Obama had a few TV moments behind a podium lately speaking about issues and showing his intelligence. He is looking very Presidential these days.....

Theresa   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Call CNN and MSNBC and tell them you want to hear about the "real" issues facing America not about lipstick on a pig. Whether you are a Dem or Rep, let the media know that this e-entertainment coverage of the campaigns will not be tolerated.

islandmisfit   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Spoken like a true Republican strategist. It's obvious that if Palin is "attacked" she will be exposed as inexperienced and unfit for the VP position. The advice Rove gives is just another way of trying to divert attention away from another unqualified Republican, (like Bush) . I only hope the American people, (Republicans and Democrats) realize that this isn't a popularity contest. We need some one in the VP slot (regardless of party) that is ready to lead should something happen to the President. Palin is not ready for that by any stretch of the imagination.

Sandy in Rhode Island   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Someone should lock Karl Rove up and throw away the key. He is like a drug to the Republican Party. Obama is the cure for that addiction. Karl remainds me of the Grinch. His life centers on hate and fear mongering.

Kevin   September 11th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

McCain supporters still think experience beats judgement. Interesting. You have two types of experience, good experience and bad experience. Good experience is McCain sometimes opposing Bush and the republicans. Bad experience here is McCain voting with Bush 90% of the time. I'd say his bad experience strongly over takes his whole experience, which means that he doesn't have the JUDGEMENT!

Karl Rove is a criminal slimeball who has orchestrated all the disgraceful negative ads that are nothing but pure lies. He was Cheney's lap dog and was directly involved in the illegal blowing of the cover of CIA agent Valerie Pflame as retalitaion against her husband who publically stated the facts used to convince Americans and Congress to start a war in Iraq were false. He ignored a Congressional subpoena to testify before the Judiciary Committee. Nothing he does or say can be trusted. Even his colleagues says he is a person with no ethics and will stoop to any level to get what he wants. It says a lot about McCain's lack of character that he has let Rove run his nasty, deceitful campaign. Rove is a thug and McCain has no integrity left by letting this criminal run his campaign strategy. McCain is now acting like Rove. McCain will say and do anything out of desperation to get elected. McCain has destroyed his creditability and has proven he is not Presidential-worthy. No Way No How No McCain. We are sick of your negative ads, your messages of no substance, your ridiculous pick of an extremist nut from Alaska for VP, and your constant flip-flopping on what you believe. Your words change based on who you are in front of. Your record speaks for you. You are nothing more than another Bush and you have no credible plans for cleaning up the Republican mess of the last 8 years. McCain is too old, too unhealthy, too out-of-touch with real Americans, and has proven he has no judgment qualities or character in choosing the corrupt and scaringly unqualified Palin. Kab   September 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Rove is right on this one.
Leave Palin to the side let the media and the american people vet her. She would not survive it. Cos she is a phony.
Obama's focus should be on the issues here on out. I don't even think attacking Mccain is necessary at this point. Like one person said on here earlier, its a shame other Dems have gone AWOL. They should be the ones unleashing hell to McCain & Palin.
Obama: he wants to seal this thing done one thing and one thing only. Come up with proposed solutions to the ample problem facing America and expecially the battleground states.
The economy (Taxes, Deficit, and govt spending control)
Ethics reform (Govt under Bush has become a shame)
health care
Jobs : green tech new jobs, infrastucyure development etc
Wars ( End Iraq and how, win in Afgan and how)
Border security and immigration reform ( Suggest solutions that do not disenfranchise Hispanics but still yet protect our border in the name of Natl. Security)
Eductation.

These are real problems and McCain has no solutions. He is interested in playing politics and the blame game. (Not solutions)
No way, no how, NO CLUE, McCain/Palin

wingman11   September 11th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

I think Rove putting in his two cents at this point shows the Republicans "strategy" regarding Palin. First they portray Palin as tough, calling her "Barracuda" and "pitbull". At the same time, the Republicans shield her from the press, making up excuses like "the media is after her", trying to elicit sympathy for her, I guess. Now two weeks later, no one knows what her views are on any major issues or even if she has any views at all! Then they make up this controversy that Obama called her a pig, again to elicit sympathy from the public because the "big, bad black politician" is attacking a woman. Now you've got Rove actually telling Obama not to attack her, again to drive home the fact that Obama was attacking her when in fact he wasn't. (Note: McCain used the same "lipstick on a pig" phrase when speaking about Hillary Clinton but apparently its ok when a Republican uses it against a Democrat). I don't know about you but all I've seen to date is a VP candidate who can't campaign on her own, can't deal with the press and can't deal with the realities of American politics. Is this woman who we want to be one step away from the Presidency of the United States of America? I don't think so.

Rove has already done Barack's work for him when he said that Gov Kane wasn't qualified for VP because he has been a governor of Virginia(more population and higher budget than Alaska) for less than 3 years and was only the mayor of Richmond(many times larger than Wasila) before that. When did Obama attack Palin? Where is Karl is getting this information? I guess if he repeats it enough times people will actually believe that Obama attacked Palin..Can't you see he is just trying to distract us from the real issues. God please save us from the evils of Bush,Cheney,Mcain,Palin and Karl.

Rich   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Someone please locj up this war criminal I am sick of seeing and hearing him. Why dont you stop covering the war criminal CNN. What gives other than the fact he has a warrant from congress what else is their really to say about him other than he's should be arrested. People go to jail for parking tickets and this war criminal is walking the streets. Pathetic!!!

RG   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

It is a proven fact that Palin's is already lying about her record and it is causing people to spend too much time addressing her when she should not be that important. If she was not known on the first place, and most of the very first accomplishments she has listed are not accurate, then why should people be so concerned about her? People who well informed and rational will hopefully see the reality, and if Senator Obama keeps being who he is, there is no reason to worry. As of this moment, he is still the most positive candidate out there even though most of his own supporters want him to attack. He will be fine as long as the new generation of voters gets out there to vote and he keeps addressing the real issues!

Tim M   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Karl Rove is a McCain campaign supporter and "unofficial" advisor. Please, CNN, do your jobs rather than just taking Karl Rove's transparent concern trolling as serious news. This election coverage is depressing and an insult to all American citizens.

We've Paid Him Enough   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Dear Mathew,

What do you mean he's not on anyone's payroll this year. The man headed an office to re-elect George W. Bush with everyone's tax dollars (Democrats included) WHILE at the White House. How brazen is that?

No, we should never take Karl's advice. He's the scum of the earth and should be under a jail.

od   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

Someone please tell Mr Rove he can keep his advice to himself.

Maryland for Barack   September 11th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

While I think Rove is a lying, cheating ... you get the idea, he actually has a point.

With Sarah Palin brought into the race, there has been a shift in attention from Obama and his policies to Sarah Palin (not even to McCain). She has drawn more publicity, and that is helping the Republicans and hurting the Democrats. Obama should be focusing on his issues and dealing only with McCain. That's how he'll get back his momentum and win. Leave a surrogate to deal with Palin – I recommend H. Clinton, so that the Republicans can't claim it was a sexist attack.

But Obama, you need to focus on YOUR message. It works.

Dick in Sioux Falls   September 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

McCain/Palin/Bush all oppose the Constitutional role for the Federal Goverment to "Promote the General Welfare" of its people.
McCain/Palin/Bush oppose Federal Aid to Education.
This Unholy Trinity oppose negot iating World Trade Agreements that protect American workers from having our manufacturing jobs carted overseas.
Sarah Palin sounds like the reincarnation of a female Dick Cheney. She, too, accepts huge checks from Big Oil, and at the same time campaigns hard for off-shore drilling and drilling in the ANWR.
She, too, has wrongly used her power to persecute anyone who for any reason falls from her favor. We don't need another such Power Broker operating from the relative anonymity of he Vice President's Office.

DWoods   September 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Why would Obama take advice from you, when you are actually schooling Palin? Although, your advice is sound and correct, Democrats know to steer clear of anything you say or do. Just ask Valerie Plame and hubby.

Brilliant Rove! Well done. No wonder thay call you the Master Mind. You write an article about giving advice to Obama about not attacking Palin...When in fact he hasn't been attacking Palin...Brilliant.

Next I suppose you're going to write another advice column...telling Obama not to be a sexist...When he's not being a sexist!

Here's some advice. Get a good lawyer, because soon or later they are coming after you! Last but not least...Don't drop the soap!

carolyn - utah   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

The only reason the Repulbicans continue to make these outlandish statements is as a way to distract from discussing the real issues facing this country. The media are feeding right into it. If discussion occurs about the economy, the war, and where this country is headed, the Repulicans know they are in trouble.

DG   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

If the McCain campaign continues to prevent the media from asking Sarah Palin any questions, I think the media should refuse to put anything about her on TV. If she can't answer questions that the public need to know the answers to, how can she possibly be considered a serious candidate for VP. Think people!

texas democrat   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Karl Rove is a mastermind for the mccain ticket but he can only master the minds of the stupid. How can a person be called tough as a pitbull and yet she can not answer any questions on her own. Why give this man any 'airtime'? He should be in jail, he's in contempt of a congressional subpoena and yet people run his 'political advice' and have him on their news programs as a political adviser... please stop placating this man by giving him any credibility or airtime.

Paul in Dallas   September 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Would you please close your trap Mr. Rove? You are the "architect" (no offense to architects) of this nation's suffering. You look and sound too much like Rush Limbaugh. Palin is running for president. McCain is nothing without her. Time to unleash the hounds of hell. Palin/McCain is a hate and lie ticket. May it perish.

Beto, Seattle   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Obama would be wise to take that advice, no matter that it came from Mr. Rove, it is still good advice. If any of Obama's followers gave the same advice, they would show signs of progress. But, Obama's followers don't know any better. All they know is how to sling mud.

Dion   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Sarah Palin was definitely not a good choice for McCain and it is sad that judgement on this one was very poor.
He woudl have stood a better chance choosing someone else. She definitely a turn off and has turned my mind form John McCain.
I don't want to a pitbull in the white house I want to someone who can reach accross party lines and resolve the issues that are hurting our country. Very disappointed with the choice and I am a woman.
Another problem I have with Sarah Palin is that, being a mother with a child with special needs she should not have taken up the position of VP. What time is she going to have to spend with that child? Or is it that it is not hers? I cannot imagine a mother not wanting to be around her child with such needs. She certainly does not act like a mother who is concerned about her little boy.
A mother is suppose to be a nurturing person not a pitbull.
Very disappointed and McCain has lost a vote.

Democrats.
Why are your comments so seething & full of anger and hate? I guess you're all just representing what your party truly stands for...a bunch of complaining yet not producing any change yourselves. You've had majority in the house & senate now since, what, 2006? Yet your new Democratic dominant Congress has the lowest approval ratings in history (what is it, 9% approval right now, or is that how much you've accomplished?)

Rove is right on this one... all of your questions about Palin's lack of experience for the VICE pres job, are exactly what the rest of us are questioning about your PRESIDENTIAL nominee - experience??

Get over it. You all are a bunch of whiners.

BTW, Rudy NYC, Rove isn't making these comments on a day when a truce was called, his comments were in an article printed in the Wall Street Journal! Take it up with the WSJ if you don't like it.

Truth hurts doesn't it Dems?

Min in NC   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The same thing could be said for Palin that is said for Obama, it doesn't matter that he's inexperienced because he can align himself with people that do have the experience, therefore we should vote for him. Palin will learn alot as VP and should she have to "be in charge", well I'm sure she would do exactely what Obama's doing, getting advice on the serious issues from people who have experience. Obama needs to be careful making statements about someone else making stuff up or changing their minds or actions just to get elected, thanks to the media every word he has said ,we have heard, we know how he has backtracked on some of his issues.

DC worker   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Peggy Noonan was right. Palin as VP is BS and a gimmick. To distract us from the fact that McCain is offering 4 more years of Bush policies. Meanwhile, they are USING Palin. Do you think they will stand by her when they don't need her anymore?? The fact that all these conservatives are champions of feminism now is an even bigger joke.

chip   September 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

It's nice to see the uplifting comments by the peace-loving, issue-oriented equal opportunity lefites on this discussion board.

Only one or two posts that I've read so far objectively analyze the story as it is presented.

Most are just repeating the same derogatory comments heard in the Democratic talking points or made by Keith Olbermann, only with even more cynicism and vulgarity.

Had Obama used his great judgment, he would have chosen Hillary as a running mate, not the 4th place finisher in the primaries. Had he done that, the numbers for the Democrats would have been overwhelming and Sarah Palin probably wouldn't be the VP pick.

But, if he had chosen Hillary, McCain would have probably gone with Lieberman ... game, set, match!

Over the last couple of days, I've also been hearing so much static from the separation of church and state crowd that "Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor."

Thanks for the Bible lesson.

A woman gets selected as the VP candidate and the party that claims to champion women's rights and equal treatment feel an insatiable need to destroy her.

The politics of personal destruction rears its ugly head again.

Have a great day and please learn to spell and type.

I rarely agree with Rove but I believe he is right. I hope Obama gets back on track.

I'm ready for some inspiration. Town hall meetings are good for McCain. Obama shines with big crowds. How about another send off because Demos lost momentum after the Convention. Let's have another big rally in a big stadium with Obama, Biden, the Clintons, Gore, Kerry, maybe even Kennedy and Oprah. The focus would be "Real Change – Ending the Bush/McCain Era"

Let's get creative. Get back on message, Remind people that the GOP always stoops to low levels to win. That's not change we need!

it is ridiculous and sad that our society has gotten to this point when we can allow some woman, whose only qualifications are her tight skirts and references to being a hockey mom, run for vice president.
McCain is clearly using this lady for his political advantage, and Palin almost seems to dum to realize this. what is a 'hockey mom, anyway? who came up with that line? This is the USA where people watch MLB, NFL, and NBA. since this is the case being a hockey mom wont cut it. even if McCain were elected his age is such that having this person as the potential next president of the USA would be disasterous. unfortunately the combination of republican greed and the color of obama's skin may make all this come true.

Of course, this is Karl Rove. He's just using the same tactics: first, lie about the situation, then lie again and again. He knows that most Americans aren't political junkies; all they will hear is "Obama should stop attacking Palin" - that's what he's trying to convince average Americans. He's getting into their minds subliminally by lying: give advice to Obama to stop doing something that Obama isn't doing.

What I want to know is: Where are Obama's surrogates in all of this? What the heck is wrong with Biden? Why are the Democrats putting Obama on an island and leaving him at the mercy of the entire Republican attack wing? The only Democrat who tries to help is Rendell, and even he gave a compliment to Palin. TAKE OFF THE GLOVES, FOLKS, this is a championship fight. Start acting like you want to win!

Danny   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

I really dont think he should be opening his mouth, one on September 11th and second about a democratic candidate. This just shows how the republicans use 9/11 to scare up votes and put it as a trademark.

Rove for Prison '08!

Regardless of what people may think of Rove's tactics, the man is a genius when it comes to elections and got Bush elected...twice. He's not on anyone's payroll this year, maybe Obama should listen.

Emily   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

What happened to our issues? Karl Rove advice? That's what made this country's politics go down in the past with his advice to Bush.

What happened to our issues? I want to hear discussions around issues, no more of these personality attacks, gossips, etc.

Yesterday, I saw two refreshing videos, one is from Michelle Obama, advocating for working mothers and how tough it is for us these days. We can not take days off to take care of kids or aging parents, and that was right on. I want to hear more from her. She is like Hillary Clinton, very smart and caring.

Another one is from Ron Paul and Ralph Nader, about why they are trying to run.If they could really bring this charade back to 1) economy, 2) foreign issues, 3) environment / energy, etc....

But Karl Rove, no value add to sway this race.

I think the Republicans believe that they have a girl on the team and she is allowed to hit him, but he is wrong to hit her back. NO!! If she wants to play in the bigs, then she is going to have to play by the rules. No special rules just for her.

mk in coning ny   September 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

This is typical of Karl Rove. He's the spin meister from hell. He's also a criminal. This is a man who should be serving time in jail. Yet he continues to mastermind the politcal strategy of the Rebublican party. Hasn't he done enough damage to the integrity of our nation already?

Obama has not attacked Sarah Palin. John McCain used this very phrase to refer to Hillary Clinton's policy's on atleast four occasions. There are video clips to prove it. This incident is what's referred to in psycological terms as "projection". Except that in Rove's case it's more likely intentional.

I agree that a poll should be taken reflecting his popularity. Although I think he's weaseled his way back into favor with a lot the Rebublicans. Bush is the ultimate bad guy at present while Rove still roves behind the scenes, sewing duplicity whenever he opens his mouth.

KLJ   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This is amazing. He is trying to present himself as this unbiased columnist. He continues to be a player behind the scenes for the republican Party and the McCain campaign. He is also the same man who 1-2 months ago said Gov. Kaine of Virginia was to inexperienced becasue he had been mayor of a small city (Richmond population 200,000) and Governor for a short period of time (2 years). He has been quoted as saying Gov. Palin is qualified because of her experience as mayor (Wasilla population 7,000) and her tenure as Gorvernor (2 years). Need I say any more!

We can all agree that Washington has really screwed the pooch.

Electing someone whose spent 26 of the last 34 years of Republican control we can certainly rule out McCain.

He's old and has no clue about the issues today. He's still fighting on behalf of the same issues we've been talking about for 40 years and meanwhile we're losing ground with China and the rest of the world. He seems content on starting more wars that got us in the economic jam we're in now. It's more of the same.

Seems to me that the Republicans are at times still fighting the civil war. They seem obsessed with talking about race, sex, morals, and history – they have taken their eye off the ball.

If we Democrats lose this election in November, Shame On Us!!!!!!!!!!

Jacob   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

This is outrageous, coming from someone who as disrespected this country by being aided to be above the law!!!! Serving and contesting for an election is no more honorable, about the truth and the concerns of the majority of the American, it as to be lie your way through it, create deception and divisiveness, bully people and show how much dirt you can throw. I guess other countries must be asking themselves, is this the same DEMOCRACY we want to enforce them to follow? It is a shame.

I thought election was about who has the best ideas, goal and is ready to lead the country to a better future, but it seems to me that the voice of the good people of this country has been so silenced that they can't even stand up and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, do not reduce our country to a personality contest. Well, in a country where the American Idol contest is more popular and spoken about than what affect the lives of ordinary people in this country and around the world, no wonder that why people are taking advantage off.

I thought McCain prefered the Small-towns-Rural-Area debates style, but now he is a celebrity, and the celebrity format of large crowd is now what he needs. People wake up, that is how he is going to dump you once he gets what he needs. Haven't they dumped you enough, well, probably not yet enough.

Hey Rove, just pray that McCain wins in November, otherwise, I know that the American public can't wait for you to anwser all the questions and lies that you and your party as put us through in the past 8 years. And to inform you, keep pouring out your stupidity, deceit and deception, remember that the only constant thing that rules is TRUTH.

With the fooolishness of those that are been lied to, I can tell you that other countries are looking at us and laughing:

China, will say, they have not learned from the mistake, let us get them more into debt, distract them and subdue the little countries to gain country.
India is saying, lets give the best education to our own as they get divided more on who should privatize or not.
South American countries are in waiting to take as many jobs as possible, you only need to tell them lies, because if you tell them the truth and even show them the result of lies, they don't care they prefer to whine.

The world and countries that lobby us are sure watching and waiting to see the next best trick of lies to tell us, so that they can take more jobs, give more grief to those who will lose morethan ever had.

Rove, wish you the best after November, because one thing will sure happen, you either will get through this world and congress that has not held you accountable, but you sure will be answerable to the greater One that gave you an opportunity to serve, but misused the power.

Thanks CNN for accepting my comment, or this truth is also to hard for you to swallow. As many that can speak the truth more, the better it will be for the country.

L Wright   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Does any intelligent , educated person out there really give a "hoot" about what Matt Damon or any of the rest of the "Hollywood celebrities" think politically? What could they seriously know about protecting and running this great country. Most of them, and I said "most", do not derserve to live here anyway. All they ever talk about is how bad of a place it is...well, they certainly would not be where they are now if they resided in any other country. Jane Fonda should never have been allowed back into this country ever! I say if they think this country is so bad, why don't they GET OUT!

Csokas   September 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Rove needs to get his facts straight and if CNN was doing their job, they'd have skipped this article because it is factually inaccurate. Barack Obama has not attacked Palin.

I heard my own radio station 710KIRO in Seattle actually say to their listeners that if they want to learn more about the candidates, then they should look up the candidates websites and go to congressional reports, etc. Pardon me, but while I don't mind doing extra research to make sure I'm comfortable with my vote, my job is a funding coordinator at a leasing company. Their job is to report factual news. They've won some Edward R. Murrow Awards, but I think, with that statement, they – and any news agency that feels the same way – should return them and accept no more. Edward R. Murrow turned over in his grave when he heard that.

The fact that Palin and MCain have so many Bush advisors orchestrating every move and annnouncement on the Republican pause, should give most people pause. These are the same people who micromanaged Bush into office....twice...and where has that gotten us? They are doing the same thing again...forget about the issues, and just lie your way into office. I didn't fall for it with Bush, and will not with McCain. Do people not see a pattern here????? Do not be fooled again, have the past 8 years taught people nothing??

McCain will need a big fork to Moose when this is over!!

We must turn the economy around, create jobs, bring our military home, turn the housing situation around and have affordable heatlh care for all. These are the issues – not how many fish they can catch, animals they can shoot, or people they can fire. McCain/Palin/Bush/Rove

Mr. Karl Rove, you are the dumest person I have ever see, Obama did not attack Mrs. Palin, the expression "Pig with lipstick is still a pig' is not an attack on Palin. That Expression has been used more than four time by McCain, today you want to used it against Obama. You Republicans, just don't get it. You will loose in November. It is just a matter of time and Americans will discover your dirty politics.

I hate to say I told you so Dems – but . . . at the very least it should have been a Clinton/Obama ticket and then Obama could debate Ms. Alaska beauty queen all he wants, but that's not the case and he needs to attack McCain and now!!!!!

sandee in Portland   September 11th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

Who in the world would listen to one of the biggest crooks of our time. Obama hasn't attacked Palin and if he's referring to the lipstick topic, he must not be watching the news programs. McCain has used the line many times in the past but when the democrats use the same line, they're sexist.

As an older white woman, I am appalled by the Republican tactics and their campaigning. I can't believe that the majority of Americans are better off than they were 8 years ago......only the wealthy are better off and that is not the majority! WAKE UP PEOPLE.... if you really are worse off now than you were, just think where you'll be in another 4 years if you elect McCain.

In the most important election in the history of our country, people are voting based on gender and name recognition rather than on issues. I challenge any Republican to tell me McCains plan on economy, global warming, health care, etc.

Seems that ever since the 30th of August our sweet brothern at the democratic party have had a pig dressed up like Palin on their web site. Complete with brown wig, pearls, make up, and a suit that looks remarkably like the one she was wearing last wed. Of course obama will squirm, and um ahh, say he knew nothing but frankly i’m sick and tired of him and his excuse. What is he going to throw the entire party under the bus? Pat... dont' think that Mccain or Palin are evil. However, I do think that many of the hacks they surround themselves are mean spirited, dishonest and dishonorable...and neither Mccain or Pain is doing or saying anything to stop it.
I don't know anything about Palin, butwould have thought Mccain would be above this stuff
Obama is as qualified as Mccain. And...he's a whole lot younger and healthier.

Rove is exactly right. Obama should consentrate on showing he can handle the job and not run down the republican VP. It makes him look like a loser and is too worried he is going to lose the McCain/Palin ticket.
Obama needs to work on being able to answer questions without a script in front of him. He doesn't appear to be someone that could make a quick decision if one is needed.

On my way into work this morning I listened to the names being read at Ground Zero on POTUS 08 and found myself silently crying over the loss of so many loved ones.

And then? I got angry that Bush and Cheney and the NeoCons used this horrible event as a LIE to start a war that killed more Americans than died on 9/11 and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians.

Wake up people. The Republicans are lying to you.

You want to vote for McCain 'cause you think Palin is "exciting?" Please. Going over Niagra Falls in a barrel is exciting but do you think you'll actually survive?

The Republicans are using you and your ignorance to control you. They'll make money with their rich corporate buddies in oil and big business and you'll get poorer and even LESS educated which will make you even easier to control.

They'll continue to buy up every media outlet until you no longer hear the truth about any issue or about any politician. Books will be banned and free speech will be gone. Do you really want to live under Stalin??

What's it going to take for you to finally understand that THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU? You are simply a means to their end. Sadly, by then, it will be the end of America as we know it - the Constitution will be in shreds and YOU will be to blame because you had a choice to make it right.

Again, I beg of you to THINK. Listen with an open mind. YOU can make a difference but you have to be willing to not vote against your self interests.

Vote Democrat. Vote for Hope. Vote for the Freedom of your children and your grandchildren.

Spare me your sob story about how *you* were so wronged in Florida by the DNC. Had your state just had their primary on a day that was not in violation of DNC rules, then maybe Hillary Clinton would be the nominee - or again, maybe not. We will never know.

If you vote for McCain this election, you might as well just register Republican because that is what you have become. Our electoral process is not about voting for someone out of spite - but apparently to you it is. So much so that you are willing to SELL OUT Hillary Clinton and everything she believes in to vote for a ticket that will try its best to reduce the gains that Hillary Clinton has made during her time in politics.

Yeah, you *really* love Hillary Clinton....*sigh*

The interesting part is that KR is quite possibly the only man in US politics with a worse reputation than Bush-Cheney. Which is to say, anytime he speaks or writes anything, it is a net gain for Barack Obama.

This was the guy, remember, who said, You're entitled to *your* numbers – I have *THE* numbers. Republicans hold on to both the Senate AND the House of Representatives.

The Supreme Court said the president (Nixon) could not withhold tapes of Oval Office discussions from Congress, yet KR believes he can refuse to even bother to *show up* for Congressional subpoenas? He thinks he has greater privilege than the President himself? Why isn't he in jail yet?

Ignore him. He has nothing reliable to contribute to any legitimate discussion.

This man – the one guilty of creating nasty ads, lies and worse on Democratic political candidates – the same one that says he doesn't have anything to do with McCain's campaign... I am so sick of the gutter people – also known as Republicans. It is okay for them to lie, cheat and steal us blind – but, we better not address that in campaigns??? I sure hope there are more people in America sick of these Republican tactics!
But, frankly, I am afraid that the Republican tactics (or stealing another state in false election data) will only encourage the 50+ million idiots that voting in '04... Agreed, ignore her and make her impact mean nothing.

No reason to go after her, McCain needs her to firm up his own weakness. If we make this a culture war then Palin has the advantage, if you make this about the issues, then Obama has it all over McCain. So make it about the issues with McCain. That is what we should be focusing on anyway. If the Republicans were going to do anything about abortion or gun control, or any of those other issues, they would have done it by now.

Dante in Madison, WI   September 11th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Karl Rove is irrelevant.

People put credit him with having way too much "power and influence" than he actually does in reality.

He may be good at crafting distractions and campaigns based on non-issues and lies, but the man is totally irrelevant in this election. He's not running for office so why waste valuable media space on stories about him and his opinion?

CNN, why aren't you hammering McCain and Palin for avoiding talking about the real issues facing our country? Why aren't your correspondents and anchors hammering McCain and Palin for not giving straight answers about what they plan on doing about the rotten economy, the failing housing market, and the loss of jobs in this country?

Who in the media is going to champion these questions for the American people?

It's over for Obama. He is running scared and acting like the inexperienced, immature, unqualified candidate that he has always been. And the media is running scared too: apparently the only person in this race is Palin, if you read the headlines, watch the television coverage. it's only about her, in a decidedly negative manner. CNN, your boast of "no bias, no bull" is a lie, and is hilarious. Only when one is flat out guilty will they go to the extent you have gone to try convincing people you are innocent. No Bias, No Bull? Really? You, CNN, are joke!
And Obama-bots, your about to lose what you all thought what your inevitable coronation. Funny how things work, isn't it!

Michelle   September 11th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

Actually, from the way John McCain has let Palin take the stage for the last few weeks, it appears that Obama IS running against Palin. And Palin still has not answered for her bad decisions while Alaska's governor (including the millions of dollars in earmarks and the money she kept for the "bridge to nowhere" that she approved and then refused), so it will most likely be left up to the Obama campaign to point out her myriad inconsistencies. Just remember – no fair calling the sex card when people start criticizing your so-called "reformer" past. Palin wanted to run with the boys, so she has to take her hits like a big girl and not whine about it.

Rove   September 11th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

In December 1969, the man Rove had known as his father left the family, and divorced Rove's mother soon afterward; it later became known he was homosexual.[6][7] After his parents' divorce, Rove learned from his aunt and uncle that the man who had raised him was not his biological father; both he and his older brother Eric were the children of another man. Rove has expressed great love and admiration for his adoptive father and for "how selfless" his love had been.[8] In 1981 Rove's mother committed suicide in Reno, Nevada.[8]

Larry B   September 11th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

Obama is no longer a celebrity on the political circuit – he has competition and he does not like it one bit- As a result, his campaign has stooped to dirty tricks – pathetic. His running mate, Joe Biden, comes out in NH and says that Obama may have made a mistake and that Hillary Clinton would have been a better pick for VP A new poll has come out and concluded that the combined ticket of McCain and Palin is more experienced than Obama – Biden. Now, if you take the VP's out of the mix, the experience level is off the charts for McCain. Americans and politicians alike trust McCain, and even the Dems acknowledge that McCain would be an honest and effective President who would bring change and a cooperative working spirit to DC - Let's go with a proven commodity that we can trust – Let's go with McCain – Palin. As for Obama - America is very quickly concluding that he is all talk with little substance – and even less experience. His clever tongue is beginning to trip him up

Okay, Karl, i guess since you no longer matter, you have to try and get attention. I look at people like you who has never got but can sit back and tell others what they should LOOK IN THE MIRROR, people like Karl Roves are the biggest LIARS and biggest CRIMINALS,. Your opinions means nothing, get a real job and learn how to be a decent human being.

When will America learn. I heard on the readio y'day a Republican supporter comparing Palin to the likes of Reagan, Roosevelt etc. Are they really so stupid? You will send a Hockey Mom to represent your country to the world?

You can send a white hockey mom to the white house but you wont let a Black man be president.

The supporters of Obama need to spend less time on these forums and garner support on the streets, Florida is 55-43 McCain... oh what a pain!

Folks, it's up to us to find the truth, through independent, non-partisan resources like factcheck. MSM all have a spin these days no matter how much they deny it – they're just like any business trying to cater to a certain niche of America.

Sadly, you can turn on a light and turn a person toward the light, but you can't make them open their eyes to see the light. Some people will forever argue there is no sun matter how many people try to take off their blinders.

Steve   September 11th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

The Republican Party would be a lot better off without slimeballs like Rove. He and others like him have turned the Republican Party from an honorable party that was the party of great presidents like Abraham Lincoln into a bunch of lying, self-serving, money-grubbing weasels. I was a Republican. I am one no longer. I am ashamed of what the Republican party has become.

The national polls are missing huge segments of the American population. The race is not nearly as close as the Republicans hope.
People are sick and tired of being taken advantage of by their own government. McCain will go to retirement, and Palin will go back to running her local PTA. It is the job she is truly suited for. VP? Yeah. Right.

FreeNLovIt   September 11th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

i just wish the best for America. Nobody LOVES us. We need to take good care of this country.

The fact of the matter is, the Republican Fighting Machine is battery-operated by the Democrats. Every now and then, this Machine must yield to the Democrats, so they can re-tool, re-engineered and re-fueld the battery, for more vicious battles ahead.

We are running a marathon. We're on Lap 3. We cannot afford to overheat and drop dead, because of greed and selfishness.

What good is it if you win 10 years of war? Burn yourself out and lose all other wars to defend your country. We're 200 years, old, we have 800 years to go.

It's selfish to not let the Democrats have this election. If you hate the Democrats, then dont use the Internet! Clinton, with his vision and guidance, jumpstart us to a new Age.

Both these political teams are fused together. One cannot survive without the other.

No2GOPGimmicks   September 11th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Tony...you said it all!!! Brilliant!!!

Besides, Obama wasn't attacking Palin... he was making a point that she talks against earmarks when she herself graciously received them for her city and state.

It's true..."You can't just make stuff up"... you'll always get caught in the lie. Her earmark reform claims have been shot down time and time again, but she still repeats her earlier comments because that's what's on her script-blowing in the wind on the podium, while she's trying to read it word for word.

Unfortunately, the people who are looking for an excuse to not support Obama (other than he being black) will latch onto anything...

Jim   September 11th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Rove speaks the truth. ... of course he knows that by speaking this truth, Obama and the Dems won't listen to him. Which is what he wants. It's a cunning way to encourage Obama to keep helping the McCain Campaign by focusing on Palin. And most of the comments above this are responding exactly how Rove would want you to. Ever take a minute to wonder why the Republicans are on top in the polls right now? It's because you can't turn on CNN without hearing the word "Palin". You can't look at a magazine without seeing her face this week. Obama and the Liberal Media are highlighting the Republican ticket. This is the first week that Obama has not been flooding the news networks, magazines, newspapers, etc. Now the spotlight has moved to the Republican ticket.
So go ahead and don't listen to Rove. Myself and the other 47% of us voting for McCain sure don't mind the media attention.

Result: BA in Journalism

No master's work, no doctorate, no political science, no law.

Anonymous   September 11th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

How stupid does Senator Obama think we are? He brings up a budget of of a small town when Sarah Palin was Mayor and not the budget from when she was Governor. Also, how do you compare running a campaign to running a city or a state. I also thought that Obama had a campaign manager that was running his campaign. He really shouldn't take credit for what his campaign manager has done. Wow people really want this guy to be President.

NoDumbA$$ Cheesehead, WI   September 11th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

The McCain campaign has given only the sketchiest policy proposals; it has spent most of its time trying to divert the national conversation away from matters of substance.

FACT: No single Republican president has ever delivered on the promise to shrink the federal government, but ignorant people buy into this every election cycle.

Obama said it in Denver ENOUGH! He also repeated it again yesterday in Virginia.

We need to support Obama in claiming our righteous OUTRAGE of what has happened to America since GOP took control of Congress 12 of last 14 years and what they have done with Bush in the last 6 of 8 years. Let’s all join Obama and tell them ENOUGH! Is ENOUGH! We do not only want our country back we are going to take it back from the jaws of mediocrity and incompetence. AND we do NOT have to apologize for telling the TRUTH.

Enough Karl!   September 11th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Second the poster above who notes Rove's comments on the anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history. One could reasonably hope that all would abide by the example of the two candiates and refrain from "politics as usual" on 9/11, but, as usual,
Rove hasn't a clue.

JImmy in California   September 11th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I have no idea how old Karl Rove is but for the first time in his life, he has said something smart when he suggested to Senator Obama not attack Gov. Palin. I am an Obama supporter but on this matter, I agree with Rove. Obama needs to stay on message and win votes. He needs to let his surrogates take care of Palin. In fact from what I am seeing, she will take care of herself for him. People are beginning to tire of hearing the same old thing over and over from her. People are also beginning to see how McCain is using her as his extended mouthpiece to say the things he cannot say because of the damage it would do to his "Honorable Reputation". Senator Obama, listen to Karl Rove on this matter and get back on message.

LB   September 11th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

I'm so tired of hearing Repigs. saying McCain was a POW. NO BODY cares except the repugs. Being a POW in no way automaticly qualifies a person to be Pres. of the USA. Someone explain to me how living in a 4 X 6 cell for 5 years gives you the knowledge and experience to be a President of anything. If that is all it takes then we need to check out the State Prisons for a candidate. McCain has no judgement, look who he picked for a running mate, again no one with any real experience. Oh she claims 10 years of elected service, but I hardly believe anyone in their right mind would want a small time mayor of a town of 5000 people running this country. Even her own father did not think she was qualified to run as Governor of Alaska.

THEY WHAT TOO KEEP PUTTING PEOPLE IN OFFICE BECAUSE THEY LIKE THEM WELL THEY WILL GET WHAT THEY ARE GETTING NOW .

Nate- Minneapolis   September 11th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Rove giving Obama advice please. This is more of the Palin is qualified house of cards that the GOP is trying to sell. If she was qualified to lead this country or even sit in waiting what are they afraid of.> Why is she not answering questions on her own, taking interviews from the press or campaigning on her own? Because she's just not ready and they are afraid people will see that reality- not the reality they've spun.

Secondly, Rove coming out and saying attacking Palin is stupid appeals their supporters and suggests that Obama has been attacking Palin. That's the message he wants to send is "Obama is a bad guy because he's attacking Palin." This is very misleading. He's referred to her once. He's not attacking her but attacking the issues.

What Rove wants Obama to do is the exact opposite. He wants Obama to stay away from Palin. If people realize how inexperienced she is, how undereducated she is, or how unvetted she is this house of cards or illusion that they've created will disappear. Furthermore he wants the focus to be on Obama rather than Palin. They make a mistake in choosing her and they want to cover that up. Sure people are excited now, when the excitement wears off and reality sets in everyone will see the truth. Their hope is that there is too little time to really expose Palin, or for her to make a mistake.

Obama will win the experience argument hands down. He's been fully vetted and involved in national politics on a federal and legistative level for years now. People are comfortable with his experience and judgement or he would not be the democratic nominee. McCain has more experience but he's also a puppet to the GOP and special interests. He's fallen in line with them so he can win. He's not the same candidate he was. Palin was selected for her appeal, not experience, not judgement, not because she is ready to govern or advise the president. She was chosen because it was politically expedient.

Chloe   September 11th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

Whether you like him or not, he's right. You cannot tell me it doesn't look weak when the Presidential candidate has got to outdo the opponents VP candidate. He better let Biden do it and focus on McCain. In the last few days, it's become really evident how inexperienced Obama is. I doubt Bill Clinton would be doing what Obama's doing. The Dems better shape up or prepare to be added to shameful list with Gore and Kerry.

Bruce   September 11th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

Obama has NOT ATTACKED Ms Palin!!!

Karl Rove has tried to twist every statment made to seem like it is a sexest attack so they can HIDE McCain behind this woman's SKIRT..

He has to provide her with a scrip to read from and keep her away from the MEDEA to prevent the PEOPLE OF THE USA from learnig about what she really stands for.

Obama has tried to address the REAL ISSUES that need REAL ANSWERS but rather than give their ideas on the issues McCaim and Palin slip and slide on the stack of LIES.

Repeating lies does not make them true. It only shows that you are a fool and you thnk that the people of the United States are FOOLS TOO.

What have you been smoking? Do you actually live in the States? I am sure McCaine will bring freedom to the special interests groups and oil companies. We unfortunately won't enjoy that freedom. FYI, we the People and the Constitution of the United States, guarantee your freedom, even the one to write stupidities.

Joe Regis   September 11th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Rove, keeps your naked-lies and advice to your republicans clients.

Obama never attack Palin only demanding answers about who she is just as is the case of a lot of Americans.

Your fraud and the republicans fraud will not work this time.

Morgan   September 11th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Rove and Republican cohorts are terrified. If Obama wins he could probe into the abuses of the last 8 years and there could (and should) be some indictments coming. Whether Obama would spend time this way is unlikely, there being so many problems left behind by these criminals and war mongers.

voter   September 11th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

If I understand rove, questioning Palin's record is sexism. If you follow logic, then lying about Obama's record is racism. Stop with identity politics. she decided to run as vp therefore her record she be questioned. people have a right to know her stance on the issues. I thought she was a pitbull, so she can handle it. Carl   September 11th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

If Obama won't call Palin out on some of these things, it seems no one will! The media are staying away from her as if she is a beauty queen – or wait, was she? Regardless, she is probably the most inexperienced person to ever be on a ticket and everyone is just swept away instead of truly questioning her. She is a representation of McCain's political motivation which is NOT country first but win at all costs tactics. Let's all start talking about that that!!

Ben Ramos   September 11th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

I care about what Big Pop Karl thinks.

Matt   September 11th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Here's some advice for Karl Rove: Keep your fat mouth shut. Him giving advice to a democrat is about as credible as Sarah Palin leading the most powerful country in the world.

Canadian POV   September 11th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Obama should reclaim the focus on the issues but Rove and Co. have masterfully, albeit deceptively, hijacked the stage by constantly keeping Palin in the spotlight. They say that Palin should not be the focus but then keep shoving her down everyone's throats. I agree with many of the comments here, Rove is a criminal and should be behind bars. He is the poster boy for the hypocrisy that the GOP is. They blatantly disregard the basic tenets of democracy and then claim to be the only ones to protect freedom. Is attempting to prevent people who have lost their homes to foreclosure from voting in the true spirti of democracy?

We have an election going on here too. We can vote on voting day so long as we show up with photo identification, proof of citizenship and a utility bill to prove we live in the riding - we don't have to go through some other "process" to be eligible to vote and therefore there is no way the powers that be can manipulate the actuall voting process to insure a preferred outcome. We also look a the party platform and not just the personality of the leader to select our government. We are not better but perhaps a little more respectful of the process of democracy as a collective electorate.

Anonymous   September 11th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I actually wasn't defending Rove. I think he's a specimen.

I was pointing out the ridiculous-ness of the quotes saying he doesn't have an official role. Ah, well.

Pat   September 11th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

The election is highly entertaining. The hate by the "left" and the "right" is troubling and yet a bit comical. And, I'm not talking about the politicians. I'm talking about themany comments I read.

It's hard to believe that there are many people out there that actually think that only the "other"side is evil.

I'll vote for Mc Cain beacuse I think he is more qualified for the job.

Alice in Florida   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama is so traumatized that he's no longer "the flavor of the month" that he's making ridiculous mistakes. There is a new super-star, and Bam Bam's monstrous ego can't handle it!

I was heartbroken when my state screwed Democrats out of two elections, but I will celebrate when it happens this year! That's what happens when you steal people's votes DNC and Obama!

NOBAMA NOT EVER!

KC   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama hasn't attacked her, he has been way to nice bout her, actually nobody's attacked her, it's the McCain camp making up stuff to distract the uneducated. Once again no issues coming from the republicans.

Gadissa   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Get a job. Give this advice to Bushed.

Jo   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

When the heck did Sen. Obama ever attack Gov. Palin? Voters should know by now that Karl Rove is small minded and a huge jerk based on recent events.

Gov. Palin is the one who's been in attack mode. Because she has nothing to offer on the important issues and policy.

Old White Woman for the Intelligent Black Man   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama doesn't attack the person but evilness of the lies the people are perpetuating. And, by the way, it is McCain's policies Obama is challenging. I don't think he even talks about Palin.
McCain's campaign jumped on the lipstick on a pig baloney. Thus, McCain's folks are calling her the pig I guess
I think it is appalling the way Rove and his coterie have no shame about circulating blatant false claims that can be checked. It is insulting to the American people. They have done it before so I guess they expect it will work.

FactCheck   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

When exactly has he attacked Palin? Obama is the one going around discussing the issues while McCain tries to use all sort of distractions to divert from the fact that he is more of the same.

Jean   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Why are we considering Karl Rove as if we buy into all of the deception from this administration to which Rove's ideas constributed.

Are we waking up? What are we leaving for the next generation? Even this generation?

The name calling sounds like a middle school out of control, and the McCain appears and pose as if he is here to save us all from those pathic liberials.

Have we forgotten banks are closing, we are loosing our homes, we are not competative in the global world of education, we are building more jails than schools, we are at war, our world policies are in termiol, energy crisis, on and on, and this is waht our media outlets consentrate on.
This is happening to every one, not just to parts of the American public. THIS IS INDEED A SAD DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joseph, Los Angeles   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

No Mr. Rove, put Palin on stage in front of reporters and citizens who want some real answers to real questions. No one is attacking Palin, and you know it.

By the way media; Palin doesn't even talk to you "guys" (no being sexist)... Why do you even cover her?

John, FL   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Anyone who takes advice from Karl Rove is dumb.

Deborah   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

You know Obama won't heed the advice!

However those of us who follow Politics know that you

"Never shoot down"

It is considered not Presidential to do so!

Obama is so VERY naive he doesn't even know this basic rules of engagement which makes me sure he isn't ready to "Lead" anything, other then a big HATE Fest.

McCain/Palin-08-In a Landslide!

FreeNLovIt   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama is such a great, bright and STRONG individual. It's sad but he always have to end up fighting their side-kicks. He fought against three CLINTONITES.

This time he has to fight about McBushain and his twin, Pal Of Chenin.

People underestimate Obama's charisma. He's not a match for one man, it has to be two to three... !!!

Mark, B'ham., Al.   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Karl Rove beat the democrat's so called intellegent elitiest politicians (Gore/Kerry) and he is not a Harvard Lawyer so he has only one strike against him in the lack of integrity catagory being a politician!

Karen from Charlottesville   September 11th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Why is it stupid? Is it stupid to attack Obama, McCain or Biden on the issues? Why should she be held to a different standard, as implied by the veiled threats of that that lying thug Rove?

Somebody who cares about the USA needs to call her out on her lies and find out about her record. The fact she has become some right wing "folk hero" would be downright laughable if it weren't so pathetic.

I used to have a lot of respect for John McCain, but his selection of Palin has made me see that he is simply a tool. He picked her for the marketing benefits, not for the good of this country. And, he has commented time and time again about "lipstick on a pig" and now claims that Obama's use of it is sexist? Well, I guess it takes one to know one.

Robert   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Shut up Karl! Your advice is not only worthless, it's usually full of lies. Sarah Palin started the negative BS at your urging, no doubt.
In most peoples opinion you shouldn't even be allowed in Politics...Oh, and neither should Sarah Palin.
All you can do is try to make enough of a stink to get Obama to change his tactics. Your job evidently is to protect incompetent Palin.

Here's a news flash for you, "Obama is smarter and way more decent a man than you have already proved that you could never be!"

Erik   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I think Palin should be allowed to use the Heart song "Barracuda".
Here are some fitting lyrics (repeat twice).
"If the real thing dont do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn burn burn burn it to the wick
Ooooooh, barracuda?"

how   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

First McCain start negative ads, then he whines because he is a POW, and the media's are not giving him the spot light, then he complain about how long it's been since Obama visit Iraq and Iran (HAS ANYONE HEARD IF PALIN"S BEEN?), then he ACTS as if he cared anything about Hillary, when it is shown any woman will sell, then he waits until Obama picks his VP, then he pick ANY woman and thought we were FOOLS.........................Yep, this is ONE of the problems in Washington and we are SUPPOSE to believe McCain will make this CHANGE.

Jaime   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Palin cannot go on her own for the same reason McCain cannot go on his own either. They both need people who will correct them when they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Debbie   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

She should be able to hold her own. If not, she should have turn McCain down.

Palin/McCain

Dane   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Don't all you obama backers find it funny. That you see NO right-wingers on here posting? CNN is a liberal speaker box that's why all you guys come here to read each other's unbalanced ranting.

Rove, while morally corrupt, is a genius. If you deny that you're not much of a thinker. Of course given some of the comments I've read, that wouldn't suprise me.

msdx   September 11th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

Perhaps Rove should remember that if Obama ran against Palin with her scandal ridden record and lack of tangible experience with so many people terrified of her presidency Palin would lose like a racecar without wheels.

MD, TX   September 11th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Attacking Palin is dumb.
However, since Obama is such a fool, doing a dumb thing seems intelligent to him.

Don   September 11th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

It is true Obama being distracted by the fluff at the bottom of the Rebuplican ticket is indeed dumb. He should instead cut through the smoke and mirrors of distraction and challenge McCain to explain how he is truly going to fix the mess 8 years of the Empire known administration has left.

Patty   September 11th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Why can't the democrats attack Palin. She certainly doesn't refrain from attacking them. The underlying message is because she is female. This seems more sexist to me then treating her as every other candidate is treated. If she is tough enough to run for VP, she better be tough enough to take the heat. I'm sure other world leaders won't show her such deference, and if she can't handle it, we should know before she gets elected.

Cammie   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Obama, taking advice from Rove who smeared McCain during the 2000 campaign, by alleging that he fathered a child with a Black prostitute, would be as valuable as buying an igloo from the devil, sight unseen.

Rove needs to go sit down somewhere...preferably in church and repent.

All Obama needs to do is: wrap a big red bow around McCain/Palin and continue to sell them as a buy-one-get-one-free ticket and you'll get more of the same.

I bet the this will be the last time Palin refers to herself as a "pitbull." You thought being referred to as a pig as offensive...well how about a female pitbull? You know the name...it rhymes with "itch."

Anytime you make analogy between yourself and an animal...you get what you give.

DON'T HATE....IT'S OBAMA IN 08!

IA Voter   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Yea, right. Like one should listen to what this pig thinks. Almost as credible as Limbaugh...

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Exposing Palin for what she really is gives a fine example of McCain's poor judgment. Go to it.

Hughes   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Everyone should be attacking Palin - she's a dangerous political figure. Anyone who relates pipelines to "God's will," or the Iraq war as "part of God's plan" is a nut case. This is eerily familiar to Bin Laden's favorite end phrase, "God willing." Only those seeking holy war preach that God is on their side.

FreeNLovIt   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Well, I like to take this moment to thank the Republican Party for coming out to support the Democrats and to let us know that Hillary will drive the election home, for coming out to support Democrats to let us know that a Hillary/Obama ticket or Obama/Hillary ticket will be disastrous to the Democrats...

Did Snobby Kennedys, Kerry, DNC establishment, Nancy Pelosi and the other stooges listen? NO.

We'll see. I would love for the Democrats to win.

Shari, NY   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Where is everybody: You sure got that right. I have been hearing this from all over. My choice's team is woefully lacking and if he should win he should remember them very well.

Dana   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Ugh I never thought I would say this about Karl Rove- but as an Obama supporter I have to agree- and I believe Obama is going to get back on track regarding the direction of his attacks. McCain is the one running for President and he needs to remind Americans why Obama is the better choice.
I think all these back and forth nit picking, swiftboating politics worked temporarily and we all noticed Obama get off tilt a bit- but if there is anything I have learned about Obama through these last 2 years, is that he is resiliant and I think next week you will find him back on track and stronger than ever- after this long journey everyone can have an off week, Lord knows McCain has had a handfull- time to get back to business- ISSUES over RHETORIC and SMEARS!!
The media and his VP can do the work as far as letting American's know the truth about Sarah Palin- he can stick to reminding America why we DO NOT WANT 4 MORE YEARS!!
Fired Up and Ready To Go!!

Obama/Biden 08!!

By the way, this has been the deadliest year in Afghanistan for our American troops. Maybe Obama was right – we should've had more support for them there and focused on taking out the Taliban instead of attacking Iraq considering they never attacked us.

Kathryn - Metairie, LA   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Sure it's dumb because Fat Head, Karl Rove, is one of the biggest (in more ways than one!) fools in Washington, D.C., right along with George W. Bush!

Rich   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

I will vote with Bill Clinton's endorsement of Obama over George Bush's endorsement for McCain any day.

Does anyone still remember the prosperity of the Clinton administration?

The choice is so simple this election. Prosperity vs. More War

S.M   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

The lipstick issue had nothing to do with Palin; just McCain's stupid economic plan. Karl Rove may have held a high position in the government but he's still stupid.

Rick in NC   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Karl Rove is just trying to get a rise out of Obama. This is the same crap the Bush administration has been using for 8 years and it has divided this country. I know BO will not take the bait because he is to smart. Yep, that's right, intelligence trumps cheap tricks any time.

Fighting for Obama Since he is too political correct!   September 11th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Jean   September 11th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

What's the famous line... "Democrats always find a way to lose the election they should have won in a landslide."

Win or Lose... it never should have been this close.

You talk about Hope and Change and everyone rallies around you. Then McCain picks Palin and you go bashing her every chance you get. And people start flocking away from your negativity.

Even a community organizer should be able to figure out that your message is off and now your poll numbers are too.

Fix it or spend your life regretting how close you actually got to the White House.

fixthebroken   September 11th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

This whole presidential race has just gotten out of control. Rove is giving Obama "advice"?!?! Talk about a trojan horse.

Willow, in Iowa   September 11th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Well, another little scoop that keeps the MSM talking about Palin. Talking about NOT bothering Palin IS talking about Palin. He's got her back in the lights, just by saying DON't talk about her. LOL.

This doesn't deserve any air time.

suzan fahmy   September 11th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

You know it is up to you America

They have played that game again and again and we run after it and get fooled. Hope we are smarter this time America hope we are for the sake of our children and grand children

glittergirl   September 11th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Wow his head looks like a marshmallow. Anyway, the reason why the McCain/Rove camp has not let Palin speak on her own is because they are still vetting her behind closed doors. And although she likes to speak publicly, she does not sound very bright at times, almost juvenile even. The crap is about to hit the fan and it is the beginning of the end of McCain's joy ride.

Kim-Rockford, IL   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

James from Boston   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

If Palin lies to the American people repeatedly then she needs to be attacked, by Obama, Biden, you, me, everyone. She has done nothing but lie since Day One of bursting onto the national scene and the American people deserve better.

ANAG LOS ANGELES, CA   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I think he might be right about this one.

nannie bouroughs, Kenosha, WI   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Attacking Palin may be REALLY, REALLY DUMB, but what else can Senator Oblama do? He cannot run on his record; he has none!

Further, no one FORCES Senator Oblama to go negative, it is clearly a personal choice!

Senator Oblama would make a TERRIBLE president, as all he does is flipe-flop, flip,-flop... you know like all political folks. it is just a bit more revealing when he does it as it really reflect his tremendous lack of any reasonable judgment...

The real action here is fairly simple: Senator Oblama, as does the elites in the Democratic Party, simply want to be the first party to elect an African-American as president – no matter how unqualified – and this is good for AMERICA?

Barbara CA   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Hypocrisy thy name is Carl Rove!!!

My hope for America is as that by seeing the worst of the "red meat" politics (mud slinging and lies) close up we will finally reject this type of politics for not being the best way to choose our most important and powerful leader. We are not only too wise to continue this practice; we are too desperate to continue this practice. I hope that America will finally understand and reject the kind of politics that discards our best and brightest candidates and elevates the candidates who make the most despicable “red meat” political choices.

I personally will not vote for anyone who will forfeit their best and most valued beliefs to seize the presidency. I want the best person possible to be our president because we need and deserve the best person possible, especially now. A person who has no shame and no boundaries in getting the presidency will have no shame or boundaries being our president. America does not deserve this type of leadership ever again.

JusLaugh   September 11th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

I hate to say it, but Rove is right on this one. Obama is taking the bait. He needs to come up with an economic slogan and turn the tables to his conversation and his own message.

These distractions are how republicans win elections and they work every time. Obama needs to ignore the distractions and make the issues the center of attention, not Palin.

Hopefully Obama's campaign will realize it before we hand the country over to the circus act of McCain/Palin.

Nelson Colorado Springs Co   September 11th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

Obama didn't attack Palin and they KNOW he didn't. Obama was referring to McCain's plan for the economy (putting lipstick on pig), but the McCain camp figures the more they say Obama attacked Palin the longer they distract the public from the issues and the more people will simpathize with Palin (which seems unforturnately to be working). People are stupid. Like Obama said, this is silly season

If he was smart enough to orchestrate 2 back to back wins for a loser like Bush, I'd listen to his advice very closely. While democrats may hate him, it's silly to deny his political genius. The man is about as shrewd and talented as they come with regards to politics. His words ring truth, and if Obama wants any hope of winning he'd listen to them.

SD   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Advice coming from Karl Rove??? This guy has attacked the constitution for years! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Farrell, Houston, Tx   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Obama and democrat supporters don't need Karl Rove's advice. We are very aware that Rove is pulling the "puppet strings" of McCain and Palin just like he did with Bush and Cheney. Karl Rove is no "mastermind" he's a "underminder" and spreads false propaganda to anyone who will listen. NOT THIS TIME, NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN AND PALIN AND DEFINITELY NO KARL ROVE.

Just Me In WV   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Yeah, why isnt the Rove in jail? Oh, the repugnicans have him protected, after the elections and Sen Obama is Prez Obama – maybe they will lock him up and throw away the key. I could not post on the 911/safe factor because its closed for comment...but I saw a post and I just have to respond.

The post said something about Bush being the reason we have not be attacked since 911...thats really scary because I have always and always will believe we were attacked because of Bush.

Brandon for Obama   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

PLEASE POST CNN

Karl Rove should encourage Gov Palin to do the same. She was the one who initially began to slam Obama. Belittling his experience as a community organizer and such and drawing comparisons between herself and Sen Obama.

And as the article points out, Obama has not called out Palin specifically (except when he said her family life was off limits when Bristol's pregnancy was announced) -and I won't even give merit to the lipstick/pig comment, b/c McCain said it himself.

Palin should keep her mouth off Obama and stick to policies.

Arizona Demo   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

For all of you who thinks Rove doesn't count, who cares, no one listens to him; you had better pay attention. He is behind all of this garbage that is coming from McCain's campaign. Same tactics used on Kerry. If you want Obama to win, we need to get back on the issues.

The Voice of Reason   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Thanks Karl Rove for telling us democrats how we can win. Why the change of Heart? Well thanks again and now you can return to hell and catch up with your father......he's missing you.

Rove is a pig without lipstick. He should really start wearing lipstick. Don't you think?

Sylvia   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Should we call McCain McRove? McCain caves in to Rove tactics each time.

MEP   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Since when does the disgraced Karl Rove's opinion matter ? Obama does not need any advice from him! If Ms Palin does not wish to be attacked, then she should not attack so viciously herself: what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, to use another farmyard metaphor.

They cannot have it both ways. Women are either men's equals or they aren't. If they aren' t then they must use the gender card to take themselves out of harm's way, just as her surrogates are doing here. Ms Pailn, pick!( read:put up or shut up). And by the way, man up, Joe Biden!

Rose   September 11th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

I think Obama should concentrate on John McCain, and where is Joe Biden, he should be the one talking about Gov. Palin. Obama just looks stupid when he tries to defend himself against the VP candidate. With regard to the "lipstick" remark, it sure does seem strange that he would use that term at this time after Gov. Palin made a "lipstick" comment at the convention. I think a lot of people don't buy his statement and neither did the audience that was there, they knew it was a direct aim at Palin. He has a lot of guts saying that he is running a clean campaign and using the word "lie".

"If he keeps attacking Palin about her earmarks and lack of experience".

He hasn't attacked her about her lack of experience, not once, even when prompted to.

I wish he would because that's the question everybody with a brain should do, but Obama hasn't once, and Rove here is misrepresenting Obama, much like Mccain has misrepresented Obama throughout this campaign.

It makes me sick that the Wallstreet Journal would hire him to write this trash for their paper.

Another observation, this is a thinly veiled attach against OBama and typical Rove strategy.

Make it appear that he is giving advice to Obama, but in reality he is sticking talking points out there that are meant to attack him.

Rove is a Republican shill. Worse, he is totally biased against ANYTHING Obama brings to the table. As a result, his comments are worthless and should be thrown out with the rest of the trash.

McCain Is A Bigger Pig Than Karl   September 11th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Hey guys, I finally figured out why McCain picked Sarah. He realized, like the snake he is, that he didn't need a VP. His VP really will be Joe Lieberman, so he just needed a body (pun intended) to fill the slot. That way, his base is happy, he's happy because he can sidestep the American people and have Joe Lieberman in the oval office anyway. Did you really think McCain was going to go to Sarah for counsel? Not in a million years.

What's going to happen is he's going to implement every sleazy act he wants, and when subject get loud, he'll throw Sarah Palin at them.

Sleaze balls to the end.

Baze   September 11th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

The original master of deception is back at it. He's concerned, and he's using the ole G.O.P. spin to make a strength a weakness. The G.O.P has invested a lot in Palin, and as continued questions evolve around her, the luster fades from her march onto the scene. Keep up the critique, these G.O.P. are running scared from the sudden aggression.

Glen in Los Angeles   September 11th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Mr. Rove's "swift boat" techniques were the prime mover for Senator Obama's policy of responding quickly and forcefully to any slam coming from the Republicans. I think its an obvious tactic of Rove to ask Democrats to let their guard down so he can resume a plan of attack he's familiar with. We're way ahead of you on this, Mr. Rove. It ain't gonna work.

Anonymous   September 11th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Sorry, Rove is not paid by the McCain campaign. He is an "informal advisor," gives support," and has a "consistent, medium-size" role in the McCain camp.

McCain was a POW.

Ken in Dallas   September 11th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

He's right in that Palin's a distraction. He should be attacking McCain on the fact that he's hiding behind Palin's skirts, playing the mute straight man while she does all the talking, and in the fact that when McCain does open his mouth, he talks about diversionary false issues like the 1% of the budget represented by earmarks.

The story here is that McCain's hiding from the facts, because he has no defense against the fact of his irrelevance.

This guy is a clown, a criminal, and a spineless jerk who will not appear before anyone looking for the truth. He hides behind the skirts and apron strings of those who love him and spouts off his garbage for any to hear.

Having said that, I agree that Obama needs to focus on McCain – after all, it's his candidacy and not Palins.

Further, Palin will self-implode once the media get done with her. Obama does not need to attack her any longer. Even further, once the Dem 527's are unleashed, she will be cooked.

NC Man   September 11th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Yes it is dumb and attaching McCain and Bush together is dumb, too. The battle for President is between McCain and Obama.

Tony   September 11th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Palin is such a phony and she and McCain are two of the biggest liars and hypocrites to come along in politics in teh alst 25 years or more.

Palin is so transparent, has NO EXPERIENCE, will use anyone including her own children to get what she wants and climb the political ladder.

Nothing nor anyone is off limits to her. She plays the gener card when it suits her needs, uses her oldes son, her unwed pregnant 17 y.o. daughter, and even her bay who suffers from Down Syndrome.

She calls herself a good mother. Absent and out of touch mother is more accurate. Only ignorant, apathetic women are falling for her b.s., and most white women who vote republican across the country.

I believe that most Democrats and Independents vote for the candidates whom they think will be best for the country, themselves, and their familes, whereas the REPUBLICANS always vote Party, rather than whome is best for the job.

Such hypocrisy is nauseating. Right out of the republican playbook.

No way, no how, no McCain!   September 11th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Ok but isn't this a double standard???

Why is it okay for Palin to attack Obama and insult him but he can't do the same to her????

Talk about calling the kettle black!!!!!

Unempressed   September 11th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Rove knows Obama was answering a question about Palin right? He didn't bring her up.

He also hasn't really been attacking Palin... but I do see an attempt by Rove to make it appear as though Obama has. Look at the phony "outrage" the McCain camp had yesterday and their last two ads – both making it appear Obama is "ganging up" on Palin in an effort to get sympathy voting. Factcheck.org is debunking literally all the claims in these ads and point out that Obama never said any of what McCain is claiming he or his camp is saying.

where is everybody??   September 11th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Should Obama win the presidency, he should tell the Democrats to kiss his @#!. He is out there all by himself. Where is his support? Where are all of the top Democrats? Where is Maxine Waters? Where is Sheila Jackson Lee? I give the Repugs credit for one thing, they stick together from top to bottom and they repeat the same lines over and over and over like a broke record. Democrats can’t seem to get around having a black male nominee for president. The Repugs could nominate a camel and they would act like that it was the best thing in the world for America and they would stay on point and never sway no matter how screwed they know the decision was. Got to give them credit. We Democrats can’t seem to get it together even when the White House was handed to us on a silver platter.

Eric   September 11th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Seriously, Rove is right. This is the second time I've watched him give correct unsolicited advice to Obama. People don't need to hear Obama talking about Palin, the media is going to tear her apart day after day after day without Obama pointing a single thing out. Let that run its course. (Continute to) Focus on the fact that McCain's avoiding all policy discussions, how he can't even give a freaking speech without Palin to lean on, how bad the economy is doing, etc.

The sneaky part about Rove's move here is only that he knows we'll probably, out of spite, not want to take this key advice and shoot ourselves in the foot. It's a poker move, read it right Obama.

The vp became the first lady.......oops   September 11th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Bush, as strong as he is and stubborn as he is, has problems, grasping Iraq, Palin will not match it.

A leader needs to have judgement, vision and patience.

Obama has Biden to do the attacking, make Biden do it.

Obama should also continue to use the 'Lipstick on a Pig" phrase and even ratchet it up to include campaign commercials using the pig imagry. Embrace this icon, don't back down. Let the Republicans howl, and completely ignore them, stick with the issues. There is such a target-rich field of fire with McCain's and Palin's lies.

Where is this guy coming from, and why is he given a platform?

He is one of the most morally corrupt and filthy politicians of the last century, and yet we look to him for his opinion, as if we don't know what it is ahead of time.

He is paid by the McCain campaign. It's a fact.

The McCain campaign does not want anyone to say anything about Sarah. I am sure that she is a great person, but it is a dangerous choice for her to be VP. I care about the safety of this country and I don't want her with the nuclear codes. Thanks but no thanks Mrs. Palin.

Obama never attacked her. If he did, then John McCain attacked Hillary when he said "you can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig" when referring to her health care plan.

I actually agree with Rove for once. (Ouch, it hurt to type that).

Obama needs to refocus on the issues and not the the 24 hour news networks dictate what issues he is speaking about. The 24 hour media networks like Fox, CNN, and MSNBC latch on to any story that gets rating and rides it untill its dead. It's a pretty obvious pattern that consists of covering the issue themselves then have a day of coverge consisting of asking why all the other media outlets are covering it. Pathetic.

I'm sure the republicans are thanking God for 9/11 so taht they have one more day wehre Palin does not have to answer any questions.

According to a press statement put out today, after the interview with Charlie Gibson of ABC News this evening, Palin will NOT be giving any more interviews and will NOT campaign on her own, but only with mcCain so that they can keep a close eye on her.

That comes directly from the McCain camp. Any itnelligent person would realize that this woman is not qualified and if she can't hold her own in interviews how in the hell is she supposed to deal wtih dangerous world leaders as V.P., or possibly president?

Intelligent people? NEVER UNDERSTIMATE THE STUPIDITY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY WHITE WOMEN WHO VOTE REPUBLICAN.
