Weigh in with CNN's analysts and contributors.
(CNN) –On the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama each take the stage to discuss service and civic engagement in a forum at Columbia University.
What do you think of their ideas? How does the role of service determine what kind of nation we live in? What does national service mean to you?
Along with CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley, CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider, CNN Political Analyst Roland Martin, and Republican strategist Bay Buchanan, thousands of you weighed in.

The whole lipstick issue should be a mute point. I am not yet 30 years old and had heard it before. It is a common phrase used. I can see how people could feel like it was a dig on Sarah Palin. And if it was so what!!! This woman made her debut talking smack before we even knew who the heck she was. And now no one can make a referehce to lipstick because she was witty enough to include it in her own speech? If she and McCain are offended, they should make the speechwriter apolojize for comparing her to a pit bull. That would make her a female dog-would it not?
15 minutes in and already i feel that national service is difficult for Mccain to speak about.(STUTTERS)..its funny how what the republicans laughed at during their convention is now the topic of the night...i wonder if he'll say the words" community organizer".Obama must be laughing right now..
As an indepedent voter , when John Mcain chose Sarah Palin as vp , He won my vote in November and even my mother a long time hillary clinton supporter is now going to vote for John Mcain, how about that for the so called political experts in the media , there're so out of touch with the rest of the country.
John McCain does not have a real plan towards getting young college grads motivated to become involved in service for the United States. Barack Obama has a real plan to get college grads involved.
POW
Sorry Roland, lets consider our source....
more bio.... oh no....what is the purpose of this?
HE TALKS FAITH BASED INITIATIVES HOWEVER THE ADMINISTATION CONSTANTLY TURNS TO CONTRACTORS, IE KBR, HALIBURTON, AND BLACKWATER WITH NO-BID CONTRACTS AT HIGHER RATES THAN THE PROFESIONALS BE THEY FIRST RESPONDERS OR THE MILITARY EVEN IN THE EXAMPLE OF KATRINA ASK HIM HOW MUCH MONEY WE PAID BLACKWATER AND OTHERS WHO EMPLOYED OUT OF STATERS.
here comes the pow thing.
Can we say McCain might sign on to the "More Children Left Behind" deal?
I hate it when he says that he dosen't like talking about his service as he talks about his service. Every interview that he does he talks about his service
My mom has been the PTA leader for some time now, raised three kids to adulthood, sent off one to war, and loves hockey. I'd like to see if she can give a better interview than Palin, I know she would stutter less.
Gays and lesbians should be allowed to do whatever they want to do!! Sexual orientation has nothing to do with loving your country and wanting to serve!
Good question Roland!!!!
I see nothing wrong with the comment lipstick on a pig. The pig is pork barrel spending. Is McCain and his VP going to get rid of pork barrel spending, or just cover it up? I don't see anything wrong with the comment.
This SUCKS! Once again we have to sit through another wasted hour of no questions on the issues. When will news media grow b*lls and make them talk issues?
I agree with a previous response. When everything came out with Obama's pastor, it was played over and over and over again. Anything that happens with Obama or Biden that is negative is harped on for days. With the deplorable tactics that McCain has used so far, I can't believe he doesn't get the same treatment from the press. The same goes for Palin too.
George, I did the same reseach and concluded months ago Sen. Obama was well qualified. Given what the requirements are President all of us could apply, but all of us couldn't win.
One things for sure a lot of the smears regarding Sen. Obama are just plain hog wash. For instance, he couldn't be a United States Sentor if he was not an American citizen. But plenty of people have attempted to undermine his birth in the states. I had to laugh at people who do no research and centainly don't use their minds.
Can anyone say tabliod voters
In my view Democrats are angry and annoyed with the Palin selection because they perceive that she is basically ill-informed, inexperienced and probably not competent to make decisions re war,
economics and social issues which she would be called upon to do in the event of McCain's incapacity or demise. She certainly doesn't compare to Joe Biden in these areas.
Why then do pundits like Lou Dobbs appear to regard such views as elitist, or overly liberal, or something else which is less than desirable? Is it not possible that this is because they sense that their commentaries and pronouncements are less important to the American people than what they would like-that their feeling of self importance is diminished, because of more "intelligent" or "elitist intellectual" thinking?
She was like a speaker on a high school debating team, remembering to speak clearly and confidently, but with memorized, sophomoric lines she'd spent all week practicing in front of the mirror.
It really was that bad.
Now remember how he does not like to talk about his service...this guy is so out of touch-he is living in "Saturday Evening Post" days!
Roland: EXCELLENT question re: gays in the military. Can you slip the moderators a note?
Roland, you are my hero.
9/11 was an inside job
Glad to hear McCain reiterate his support for national service, but many people already know that both candidates are staunch supporters of service, but what about specifics of how service initiatives will be implemented if McCAin is President? Also, I am hearing McCain say that he thinks Americans are ready to serve. I'd like to hear him talk about what he is going to do to restore funding to the Corporation for National and Community Service so that more people can serve- funding has been slashed four years in a row. Also what is McCain going to do to implement accountability and efectiveness measures for service organizations so that the American public can have knowledge of the most efficient and impactful organizations.
