Weigh in with CNN's analysts and contributors.
(CNN) –On the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama each take the stage to discuss service and civic engagement in a forum at Columbia University.
What do you think of their ideas? How does the role of service determine what kind of nation we live in? What does national service mean to you?
Along with CNN Senior Political Correspondent Candy Crowley, CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider, CNN Political Analyst Roland Martin, and Republican strategist Bay Buchanan, thousands of you weighed in.

Did I hear McCain right: the solution to the current problem of not enough people volunteering for our military is to just make the military "larger"? And the answer to helping people in need is to hope that private companies as well as faith-based organizations will fix the situation? And now McCain's saying that the negative tone of the campaign, particularly Palin's vitriol, is due to Obama not accepting McCain's offers of joint town meetings? Uch!
How is going to throw Palin's speech back at Obama? He is responsible for the tone of his campaign–it is not dependant upon whether Obama agrees to town hall meetings or not.
Hey if the Democrats can't take it then they should leave Sarah alone. This gal will throw some elbows.....
I am shocked that he can sit on the forum and say how admirable Obama's service was when he allowed those at his convention to rip this very service and his V.P. to continually mock it in her stump speech.
McCain are you throwing a bone Obama's way?
So McCain lashes out on Obama because he refused townhall debates. This is crazy.
Now... They got McPalin ready to "Fight"... Sad ....McCain +McPalin = More Wars........
I have some friends that are life insurance actuaries – I thought I would share the information that they gave me. Based on publicly available information, John McCain has a 21% chance of not living through his first term in office.
That means that Sarah Palin has a 21% chance of being leader of the free world.
Shouldn't that terrify everyone?
Good for you Judy Woodruff!!.......Shame on Senator McCain......"This is a tough business".....what kind of answer is that......It was "tough business for Bobby Kennedy to send Federal agents to Missippi in the 60's.
McCain never goes into real depth on issues. I've gone to his website several times and the only things he gives detail for is how he will continue the war and spend more money on it.
Small town budget? Despite $27,000,000 in federal money for her town of 7,000 people Sarah Palin left her small town in over $20,000,000 of debt. That's not the kind of experience I want in the White House.
Roland Martin, you ROCK. Keep on keepin' on.
In case you other guys haven't noticed, McCain NEVER spells out how he plans on 'reforming' anything because there is no plan to reform anything. That's why his camp keeps going back to BS like getting 'offended' about the lipstick comment, when he had said the exact same thing about Hillary Clinton earlier. Was he calling her a pig? How sexist.
And although it's bound to be a lightweight interview, some of the Charlie Gibson interview with Sarah Palin is rather revealing...For example, she drew a blank at a question about the 'Bush Doctrine' and Charlie had to explain it to her. Uh, duh, people, McCain has health problems and you guys want to elect another doofus to run the non-European first world?
"Somewhat divorced from the people"...
WHAAAT!
He is seriously out-of-touch with Americans.
WHAT – he thinks Mayors have the toughest job in the country. What about a town with 1000 people and a city with 1 million. There is a huge difference. He's crazy!
McCain is consistenly inconsistent.
He's is starting to babble.
Did McCain just laud Barack Obama’s community service?
Wow Roland, are you still stuck on the community organizer thing? I completely agree with you that community organizers are important and they should be applauded for the great work they do. However, it's time to move on.
So far, this forum is dissappointing. We already know Mr. McCain's history of the military and his opinion of Irag etc. and his personality and so on. Where are the questions on economy, healthcare, social security, medicare, jobs and illegal immigration?
Town hall debates would have been great for the public to get to know both canidates better.
Is he saying the his campaign is slinging mud cause Obama didn't wanna kick it with him on the road and now he's pissed? Hell hath no furry like McCain scorned?!?!
Did he really just say that? He thinks it will be easy in washington because he can separate himself from the daily lives of american people? Nice..
way to take the high road. sending your goons (palin and guliani) to do your dirty work on attacking obamas service.
I feel that the wars in Iraq and Afganistan, should be fought on a more ideological level. What do the candidates think about this?
Thankyou – Charloom Geldenhuis from Brownsburg
Now he is giving Obama get approvment about his past work, but watch tomorrow you will see an ad on tv telling us not to vote for him because of his past work. Make up your mind McCain!
Was McCain seriously head injured? Why is he known to be volotile and impulsive? Why don't people discuss this?
