Investigator wants subpoena for Palin's husband

Todd Palin sat with his wife, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, during the final night of the Republican convention.
Todd Palin sat with his wife, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, during the final night of the Republican convention.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) - A special counsel has asked Alaskan lawmakers to subpoena Gov. Sarah Palin's husband and a dozen aides as part of the investigation into Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner.

Todd Palin has been a "principal critic" of his wife's ex-brother-in-law, State Trooper Mike Wooten, and had "many contacts" with Department of Public Safety officials about his status, said Steve Branchflower, the former prosecutor hired by the state Legislature to investigate the firing.

Sarah Palin, now the Republican nominee for vice president, is battling allegations that she and her advisers pressured then-Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire Wooten - and that Monegan was canned when he refused.

Palin has said she fired Monegan over budget issues and denies any wrongdoing.

It seems the Palin administration is hiding something. I wonder if they hope they can drag this out so it won't be public until after the election. First all of her staff who agreed to talk then said they wouldn't without being subpeonaed – then Governor Palin's lawyer says he will fight the subpoenas. One interviewed staff member, taped discussing Palin's brother-in-law's personal matters, indicated he didn't read the material from files, but got it from Mr. Palin. Gov. Palin seems vindictive, abusive, and untruthful. But if someone from Obama's campaign says that then they're going to be accused of being sexist. Sheesh.

I think the Straight Talk Express is on a detour into Rove Valley.

Sounds Great but the law may not be in your favor.

The marital confidences privilege is a form of privileged communication protecting the contents of confidential communications between husband and wife. This privilege applies in civil and criminal cases. When applied, a court may not permit one spouse to testify against the other concerning confidential communications made during marriage.

The privilege generally applies only where both of the following fact situations are present: (1) a third party was not present during the communication (the presence of a third party would destroy the confidential nature of the communication), and (2) both parties intended that the communication be confidential.

Now get around that if you like!

The GOP will try to cry foul on this when this investigation started even before Palin was picked. In fact Palin was warned about this by her own staff earlier this year. If the McCain camp is serious about reform they will not try to sqash this and be open and honest and tell Sarah and Todd to do the same.

  5. Hypocrisy is the name of the game

I think Mr. Palin played a big role in Gov. Palin's administration as evidenced by his name carbon copied on many of the e-mails. Therefore he could shed some light on the case. I hope they don't try to avoid the investigation or accept but plead the 5th that would look too suspicious for McCain/Palin.

  6. Palin, Go to war agaisnt Russia?

These daily scandals of the palin's are very disturbing, but not half as disturbing as sarah palin saying we would go to war against Russia.

I swear I could not sleep last night after listening to that woman. she is clearly not qualified or ready to be a heartbeat away from Commander in Chief.

Most American feels there is more, lots more to the Palins. Earmarks, spending, firing and hiring, bridge to nowhere etc. She comes across arrogant, defensive, even attackful.

I strongly support woman in high power position, however I smell a moose on the loose.

In the McRovian universe we occupy this political season, will the hurricane of lip-sticked misdirection by Republicans even be slowed down by a little truth? As one of those lonely Evangelicals for Obama and real change, I can only hope my spiritual family surprises the pundits and rewrites its own recent history by seeing through the "Christian package" of Sarah Palin as we did not do with the "Christian package" of GWB. Perhaps this investigation will help. But in light of us electing the present resident of the White House twice, I'm not overly hopeful. I can, however, pray!

Come one, Come all to the "Palin Show!"
This really just keeps getting better. McCain's choice of Palin as his vp was beyond reckless and I welcome every new bit of information we get about her.
I wonder if Hillary had been chosen as the democratic nominee, McCain would have chosen a (relatively) young, black man as his vp.

If she's running for VP of the united states then she must be investigated to the nth degree.

Before Sarah Palin, became John McCain's VP pick, she was
all for being co-operative with the investigation.

NOW THAT SHE IS J. Mc's SIDEKICK, SHE IS RUNNING
SCARED, TRYING IN ANY AND EVERY WAY TO INTERFERE
WITH THE INVESTIGATION. SHE IS REFUSING TO LET HER
AIDES CO-OPERATE, SHE'S HIRED A LAWYER, SHE HAS
FILED A PETITION CLAIMING THAT THIS SHOULD BE A
HUMAN RESOURCE INVESTIGATION, TO BE TRIED BY
THE VERY SAME PEOPLE WHO SHE APPOINTED! SHE
HAS REFUSED TO MAKE NUMEROUS E-MAILS PUBLIC.

Sarah Palin is desperately scared, why? because she
knows full well that she DID IN FACT ABUSE HER POWER
AS GOV. TO FIRE MONEGAN! IF SHE HAD A REAL
CASE AGAINST WOOTEN, SHE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN IT
TO THE COURTS! SHE IS LYING WITH EVERY WORD
THAT COMES OUT OF HER MOUTH CONCERNING
    TROOPERGATE!

Don't let this issue be swept underground by the republicans who are trying to intimidate the investigators and witnesses. As a voter I want to know who sarah really is. If anyone else has seen the family pictures of haer and the family you can't see her as vp or 1st lady. She must have respect for herself before the public wil respect her.

Do I smell an October surprise?

Appointing someone to run as VP without properly vetting them is always risky.

Just as risky as becoming extremely negative and childish when your opponent won't cave into your demands and then blaming them for your tantrum. People that aren't able to take accountablility, such as alcaholics and abusers use this tactic all of the time. Not saying McCain is either one of those, he just doesn't ever accept responsibility for his own actions. It is always someone else's fault and he views himself and his VP pick as victims because of it.

McCain seriously lacks judgment and throws temper tantrums every time he doesn't get his own way 100%. How people could even be considering giving him their vote is beyond me.

Gee, and just in time for an election, too. Sounds politically motivated to me.

Why are you hippies so afraid of the VP pick? You need to be engaging and debating the old guy on the TOP of the ticket.
