Obama says some ads against him “fabricated” and “lies”

Obama is sharpening attacks against McCain and the GOP.
Obama is sharpening attacks against McCain and the GOP.

DOVER, New Hampshire (CNN) –
On the first day of what his campaign called the “final stretch,” Barack Obama hammered at John McCain, and repeatedly linked him to President Bush’s policies.

“We can’t afford four more years of what George Bush and John McCain consider progress,” he said at a town hall not far from Portsmouth. “We can’t afford another President who is so out of touch that they think the economy is strong right now and promises to the exact same thing we’ve been doing for the last eight years.”

The Obama campaign seized on a comment from Thursday night’s forum in New York where McCain said it was “easy” for him to become “somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have” while in Washington.

“Maybe from where he and George Bush sit, maybe things do look fundamentally sound,” Obama said after repeating McCain’s quote and eliciting some groans from the audience. “Maybe they don’t see what’s taking place. Maybe they’re that out of touch. But I do see what’s going on and so do you.”

Even as Obama goes on the offensive against McCain in these final weeks, he has spent time defending his own campaign, reassuring voters that the recent “lipstick” story, spike in enthusiasm for the GOP ticket, and serious up-tick in negative ads does not mean his presidential effort is off-message or floundering.

At a New Hampshire town hall Friday, a man stood and asked Obama, “when and how” was he “going to start fighting back against attack ads and smear campaigns.”

“I know there are a lot of Democrats, and some Independents and some Republicans who really want change who start getting nervous because they’ve seen this movie before every four years. Right? You have ads that are being just fabricated, they’re just made up. And lies – that’s the word I was looking for,” said Obama.

“Here’s what I can guarantee you: that we are going to be hitting back hard – we have been hitting back hard but …I’m not going to start making up lies about John McCain … we’re going to make sure that anything that is out there that we are immediately responding to. But this election is too important, it’s too serious to be playing silly games.”

The Democratic nominee also pledged that families making less than $250,000 a year would not see any type of tax increase should he become president.

I have thought for a very long time that McC will say & do anything to win an election. I feel sad that he's proving that to be true. My husband is a viet nam combat vet & he would rather die than use his experiences to further his career or to force his opinions on others. He is very conflicted about McC. On the one hand he has great respect for the years McC suffered, yet abhors the way McC is trying to capitolize on it. My husbank also points out that McC was NOT a leader of men in combat. McC was a lone pilot making decisions that affected him most of all, he did not lead a platoon on a daily basis on the ground.

I've noticed a horrible trend in the media coverage. Over and over, I hear 'how should Obama deal with McCain's attacks' and 'Obama should hit back' and 'Obama shouldn't hit back' etc etc. But I never hear 'McCain shouldn't be running false attacks' or 'McCain's campaign is in trouble because it's putting out lies in its ads' or 'McCain is lying'. Shouldn't our focus be first on the issues of the campaign? And then shouldn't we call out the side that's telling lies and making false attacks?!?!?!

  6. No McCain, No Way,No Palin!

They don't have anything specific regarding their "change" policies. They are truly hypocrites, and liars. Obama and Biden need to stay on message and keep outlining their plans. Let McCain/Palin bury themselves in their lies and deceptions. Americans are on to their games. However, some of the things they say are truly scary.

As our country faces almost insurmountable challenges, the McCain/Palin ticket spews outright lies and blurry (at best) policy to the American people. How can they possibly help the country when they
don't even respect the American people?

I certainly hope Obama does not act like John Kerry and let the Republicans lie their way back into the White House.
The intelligence of the American voter is under attack again. I think Obama has something that a lot of politicians do not have; INTEGRITY.

Serial liar again today on the view. I used to like John McCain but since Rove ruined his bid in 2000, he joined the team and is now just John Sydney McSHAME.

There is a retired service man who went to school with McCain and was at the Hanoi Hilton with McCain. He said that don'tt let McCain too close to the "Red Button" I wish he would step forward and tell his story.

Honestly, why isn't this the headline story? It's like the Potato saga.... but pertinent to politics! Palin has never heard of the Bush Doctrine!!!!

DLH, the 54 of 57 states comment is not correct on your part: he said 57 CONTESTS. Remember there were some states (TX for one) that had a primary AND a caucus. Add to that the fact that there were also "conquests" in places like Guam, Puertico and American Samoa, do the math. FIGHT and FIGHT BACK HARD, FUTURE POTUS OBAMA!!
OBAMA/BIDEN '08 & '12 YES WE CAN, and we can do so with Dignity without getting into the mud with gramps and Ms. Bridge to Nowhere.

I think the Republicans are campaigning on a foundation of sand right now. it'll be interesting to see their tactic now that the mystique of Sarah Palin is dying. Without the diversion of their Trojan Horse [or pig, or pitbull...] to deflect their lack of any articulated policy position, they're stuck with negative ads and swift boating.

What i don't understand is one of the few articulated positions McCain has, energy, has been 'Invest in the same things Barack has been advocating for months: Solar, wind, bio fuels, clean coal... but we want offshore drilling too!'. Obama should be exposing this to the American public and explain, 'Hey, the only ideas that John McCain has actually illustrated, are ideas that I have come up with. if you want the guy who's got the best ideas to move this country forward, go to the source'.

  19. Listen Up...

There are a lot of sour repubs online today. Maybe you should go back to the drawing board and continue to think of more inane reasons why Sarah Palin is qualified and experience, despite the nonsensical words that come out of her mouth.

To paris who wrote... 'Not a tax cut, STOP lying to people Obama, rebate check is what you are proposing. And that is another form of welfare."

You mean like the two rebate checks we received from Bush? Like the rebate checks Palin got her small town when she was Mayor? Is that what you are saying Obama want's to do? Because he never said that. Do you even know how stupid that sounds?

I have been out Registering Voters , and it really is amazing how many people walk past and say ; I am a registered Republican , but Obama gets my Vote. I have had a couple of these people stop and talk to me for a few minutes , and between the Republican Convention being shameful and a direct INSULT to the Ameican people , and the nature of bold face lies coming out of the McCain Campaign they are completely turned off by the Republican ticket.

It's the old "bait & switch" tell a bunch of lies about Obama' piss him off, he responds in an "angry" way, then "they" say ,"look, an angry black man! Don't vote for him!" I KNOW Obama's smarter than that! The question for Americans is...are we?

Obama proposes ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in new spending, tax cuts for 95% of Americans and also promises to balance the budget. Then he has the unmitigated gall to call McCain a liar?

You can't spend more, collect less and also balance a budget that is already running a deficit. That's not even complex economics. That is first grade math.

So what did he expect from Republican's, intelligent and honest political debate.

Grow up Senator Obama. Or, better yet, grow a spine! It's time to take down the right-wing hate machine and we don't have anyone to do it but you.
