Obama is sharpening attacks against McCain and the GOP.

DOVER, New Hampshire (CNN) –
On the first day of what his campaign called the “final stretch,” Barack Obama hammered at John McCain, and repeatedly linked him to President Bush’s policies.

“We can’t afford four more years of what George Bush and John McCain consider progress,” he said at a town hall not far from Portsmouth. “We can’t afford another President who is so out of touch that they think the economy is strong right now and promises to the exact same thing we’ve been doing for the last eight years.”

The Obama campaign seized on a comment from Thursday night’s forum in New York where McCain said it was “easy” for him to become “somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have” while in Washington.

“Maybe from where he and George Bush sit, maybe things do look fundamentally sound,” Obama said after repeating McCain’s quote and eliciting some groans from the audience. “Maybe they don’t see what’s taking place. Maybe they’re that out of touch. But I do see what’s going on and so do you.”

Even as Obama goes on the offensive against McCain in these final weeks, he has spent time defending his own campaign, reassuring voters that the recent “lipstick” story, spike in enthusiasm for the GOP ticket, and serious up-tick in negative ads does not mean his presidential effort is off-message or floundering.

At a New Hampshire town hall Friday, a man stood and asked Obama, “when and how” was he “going to start fighting back against attack ads and smear campaigns.”

“I know there are a lot of Democrats, and some Independents and some Republicans who really want change who start getting nervous because they’ve seen this movie before every four years. Right? You have ads that are being just fabricated, they’re just made up. And lies – that’s the word I was looking for,” said Obama.

“Here’s what I can guarantee you: that we are going to be hitting back hard – we have been hitting back hard but …I’m not going to start making up lies about John McCain … we’re going to make sure that anything that is out there that we are immediately responding to. But this election is too important, it’s too serious to be playing silly games.”

The Democratic nominee also pledged that families making less than $250,000 a year would not see any type of tax increase should he become president.

McCain, when you decided to come out of your cave you'll realized that there that friendly shadow puppet on the cave wall really wasn't what you thought it was.... it's a problem, can you fix it?

When people stop thinking about 'me me me' and more about 'We the People', then we can actually get there. Reality sucks, but its FACT. We can only do this together, and if my tax dollars are actually going towards something worthwhile, like fixing our economy, I'm all for it. I refuse to let my tax dollars go towards lies and corruption.

Take clues from how these two tickets run their campaign and tell me who you want running our country. Trains will always run on tracks, the same tracks mind you. They cannot change course last minute, so the question is... which train do you want to hop on?

Obama: Your tax plan is called welfare. It is not tax cuts.

Also, lets get it straight on what you plan on doing with the capital gains tax. There are a lot of realtors who need to know if they will still have a job selling investment property.

You need to start talking the talk and clrifying what your jibberish means.

Charlie Gibson used his ignorance when he stated to Governor Palin she took to long to answer a question. That statement by Charlie Gibson should have been used on you long ago.

Also, I find it ironic how ABC..."THE OPRAH NETWORK"...are the ones TO THINK THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO THINK THEY CAN BELITTLE A REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE.

McCain ought to be ashamed of himself. Those ads are despicable. If he's such a Maverick, why is he using the same strategies as his predecessor Bush. Just Shameful! I can't understand for the life of me why this race is so darn close!

Lourdes   September 12th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

The ads really are shameful...I mean, just flat out dishonest. And these people claim to be the party of family values.

It's amazing to me that anyone who heard Palin's response to Charles Gibson's foreign policy questions could be anything less than terrified at the prospect of having her in the executive office. She sounded both unprepared – like when she talks about Iraq (clearly parroting what she has been "tutored" to say), and at times, when her own ideas came through, like an absolute zealot (Israel). She and McCain seem to be running on a platform that flat-out denies the complicated realities of foreign policies today. And for Americans who don't know any better, they are willing to treat our foreign policy as if it were as simplistic as a football game – the home team against the "others"

Did McCain really put country first when he decided this woman should be a heartbeat away from the presidency, from being our commander in chief?

Obama went to 500 sermons over 20 years by Jeremiah Wright amd Wright was his spiritual advisor yet he claims he never has heard Wright use the racist anti-white and anti-American language that was so much in the news. Then he makes a suspicious house deal with his major contributor and backer who ended up a convicted felon and Obama claims there was no wrongdoing. So who is lying.

Kay   September 12th, 2008 6:18 pm ET

The McCain/Palin ticket is the one of the greatest spinmasters I have ever witnessed. Not only do they tell half truths but they stick to the story even when the lies are exposed. Sold the bridge on ebay- no the bridge did not sell on ebay and was sold at a loss, was against the bridge to nowhere-no supported the bridge until Congress pulled the funding but kept the money, against earmarks-no received 27 million in earmarks for a town with a population of less than 9000, and my personal favorite: the Bush Doctrine is his world view- no it's not. Many people may not know what the Bush Doctrine is but you would expect someone who would be one heartbeat away from the oval office to know what the Bush Doctrine says. That's like saying you have foreign policy experience because you live next to a foreign company and in some places you can see actually see that country's land. Oh wait, she said that last night. As a Christian I was taught that a lie of omission is still a lie. You'd think they'd know that already.

It's the old saying that the pot is calling the kettle black (and that's not a racial thing.) There's all the usual exaggerations and half truths coming out of both camps. Neither side should claim the higher moral ground since they're both throwing mud.

Change, reform, hope, etc. are just empty words unless there's something behind them and, based on Obama's record here in Illinois, there's not much behind his. He never bucked the Democratic party in 8 years in the Illinois Senate which leads me to believe he either doesn't really have an independently formed ideas or that he doesn't have the conviction to fight for them.

I agree with your comments. Rush Limbaugh stated about a month ago that he was brought in to help Bush Sr win the white house 20 years ago and that it worked so well, they had him continue helping the republican party with his radio show.

He was instructed to help destroy the democrats with a smear campaign. The republicans have used this smear tactic ever since. It does, unfortunately work, and the losers are the American people.

The republicans have not won an election on policies since Reagan, but have won by lying and smear tactics.

The experience of the last eight years ought to have put to rest the absurd notion that we should choose our president based on whom we would feel comfortable sitting down with over a cool one. I don't know any corporation that would choose its CEO on that basis, so why in the hell should a nation of some 300 million people do so? It was tried, we got an idiot, we suffered, pfffttt! So, here's my suggestion: let's elect the smartest dude or woman we can find. Makes sense to me.

Wendy Canada   September 12th, 2008 6:04 pm ET

It shouldn't surprise anyone that McCain is doing everything but talking about the issues? Palin is starting to be revealed as well.
McCain & Palin don't even agree with each other so how do they know where they stand on issues? When you have no ideas or solutions you make things up about the other guy! Isn't that the way the Conservatives have always run their campaigns? Unfortunately for Palin, Charlie wasn't playing games yesterday during the interview & she clearly wasn't allowed to bring in her teleprompter or cue cards.
The fact that she is a woman is not enough to qualify her for the VP spot.

California Voter   September 12th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

and some ads against Palin and McCain are fabrications, half-truths or lies. It's up to the voter to either check into the validity of the statements and then decide who to vote for. I've heard commentators speak outright lies on the news, so it is difficult determine the "truth" about the candidates. Both the good and the bad news about the internet is that information can be spread very quickly and the information may be the truth and may be a half-truth or a lie. Bottom line is anyone can say anythng they want about a candidate.

Travis In Colorado   September 12th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Oh so NOW it's time to stop playing games is it? That's funny, where was this kind of talk when you were making sexist remarks about Hillary Clinton? Where was this kind of talk when you were calling Bill Clinton a racist? Where was this kind of talk when you had a cut out of McCain on your plane? Now it's time to get down to business, when you're losing and everyone is really starting to see the phony liar you are. What do you mean by it's time to stop playing games? Do you mean like having no idea how to fix the economy so you're big idea is to just hand out more stimulus checks? That's not a solution, that's welfare. That money has to come from somewhere, but I guess you dont have any ideas about that. Just sweep everything under the rug. That's what Barack Obama does. That's all he knows how to do.

John McCain wants to stay in Iraq for a hundred years and his silly running mate is telling her son and his fellow troops that they are going to Iraq to fight those responsible for planning and executing the 9/11 attacks! Sarah has told her church that the fight in Iraq is gods will, well I wonder what else she has in her mind if she should happen to become president?

It is seriously time that America calls McCain and Palin out on the Lies.
The same people who are supporting these lies, will be the ones to first start hitting McCain , like they did with Bush, should he[]McCain] become president.

America wake up and stop this disaster...This McCain-Palin ticket is the worst thing America could see. Say McCain dies after a few months or a year in Office, that makes Palin the president of the Free World instantly. Palin is not Angela Merkel [Germany] or Ellen Johnson Sirleaf[Liberia] and certainly not Margaret Hilda Thatcher.

Wolf Blitzer just showed two new ads; one from Obama and one from McCain. Obama's ad was about facts regarding John McCain's record in which he indicates that he is NOT the maverick he claims to be. It was a good ad that relied on facts, policies and choices. John McCain's ad attacked Obama and labelled him as accusing Palin of being a liar, etc. It was NOT a truthful ad. Obama has never called her a liar. The press has. Obama has not attacked her character or her personally. It just goes to show you cannot trust McCain–he has sunk to the lowest common demoninator to try and appeal to the emotions of voters and not their intellects. I cannot in good conscious support such a narrow minded candidate. OBAMA ALL the WAY! I am an independent, white, male voter of 57 years of age.

Grace Needed   September 12th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

What bothers me more is not the lies or the lack of knowledge, it is the recklessness of Senator McCain who we supported in 2000. We used to think of him as straight-talking, maverick who had honor and integrity. Now, he chooses Gov. Palin who has no experience on the national stage, let alone the international stage other than one trip to see the Alaskan National Guard and "you can see Russia from Alaska". There has been no evidence that she was properly vetted so this shows a severe lack of judgment on McCain's part and his willingness to play fast and furious with America's future which we cannot respect. Then, of course, there is her positive response with "no blinking" which really worries me. It's one thing to lack intelligence and knowledge, it is another thing to not realize it. Charlie Gibson is right, this "requires a certain hubris", except she didn't know what that word meant so she couldn't respond. This willingness to gamble with our future is frightening and we need to do something to be sure this never happens again. We need to amend the Constitution to have some requirements for V.P. Vice Presidents were elected based on second number of votes initially, and now we need to require a certain amount of experience in national government, some exposure to international relations and minimum education level.

I think someone needs to take the Republicans to task for arguing AGAINST teaching kindergarteners about the difference between "good touch" and "bad touch." Who in their right mind would argue against teaching kids how to stay safe from sexual predators? They may smear it as "teaching comprehensive sexual education to kindergarteners," but the reality is that the Republicans are arguing that we should leave kids vulnerable to the worst kinds of predation.

God, Obama looks ragged and confused. Guess they were right when they said Sarah Palin has gotten into his head.

And guess what, he has no Hillary. Oh, she goes out on the stump but she refuses to say anything about Sarah Palin even though audiences egg her on. Obama lost her by demeaning her. And now he's lost women by demeaning Palin.

Dennis Miller said that Palin has Obama so messed up that he doesn't know whether to s- or wind his watch.

Do a little research and you will find out that Obama hasn't anything of substance to offer us except for his disrespect for the U.S.A. and his very questionable background. Upon what standards do we elect a president if not that he be a patriot truly born in this country? The guy is a Muslim in heart but practices Christianity to appease yet again and progress his movement. He is dangerous and scary. He is not qualified for presidency. I would much rather vote a patriot who will continue to stand for America rather than against.

Has there been one, say ONE ad of McCain that promotes his view and his ideas for our country? Not ONE SINGLE AD! Clearly, he believes that tearing down his opponent with LIES will get him the election. If that happens and Americans are so gullible, God have mercy on us! We will deserve whatever happens to us.
Obama/Biden 08.. because this is OUR time!

I rather Obama stick to the issues and not throw any attacks back. I rather he be the honorable man that he is so he can look his daughters in the eye and say "you see this is how you do it the right way".

I rather he do that than lose the election anyway because the American people are incapable of being governed by a capable leader.

So by all means vote for McCain and Palin – I say you get what you ask for.

I will cast my vote for the responsible choice and be on my merry way to far far away land.

I am an independent and until the past month have been undecided. I cannot vote for a man who choiced a VP candidate based on a short phone call or their gender. do believe Palin is like McCain and unfortunately the "maverick" has become more and more like Bush. This dissappoints me as his campaign tactics. His ads distort the truth and the people making decisions for him do not seem to care about honest or certainly integrity. These are two qualities I liked about John McCain and would have voted for him 8 years ago, when he was a "maverick". He has lost all sense of morality and has moved to the far right and I believe this was to get the nomination. S. Palin too distorts the truth and being a successful, independent women I can see manipulation and someone who will do whatever it takes to be successful. A year ago I would have said I will not vote for Obama but he has my vote and for the first time I donated to a candidate campaign and will continue donotating to made sure someone who is honest, sincere, competent and a real "maverick" gets into office.

The bottom line is Mccain and Palin are republicans. I wouldn't care if you we running a pig with lipstick as the republican candidate. This country can not take 4 more years of republicans.

Are the people losing their jobs going to vote Republican?
Are the people who lost their homes this year voting Republican? Bill Clinton may have been a cad but we had a good economy.

I usually vote for the person, and not the party, but i'm voting democrat – i don't care who they are running.

McCain only picked Plain because that's how desperate he is to get in the White House – the man is old, he is feeble. i have an 80 year old mother who looks better than him.

All he carries on about is being a POW – thank you for your service – but in all these years in the senate what has he done for the military – nothing. The only one who truly stood up for them was Bob Dole (sorry i was an army brat). Look at the men coming home from serving their country and they are jobless and homeless. It's pathetic. He's done nothing for the military and should be ashamed of himself.

I am so tired of the Republican nonsense. And that is what it is getting to be. Obama is fighting back with facts. McCain is twisting the truth and out and out lying. But the same people who were fooled by Bush for two elections seem just as willing to be fooled by McCain!

The man is out of touch. He is not running on issues! He is running on personality. That is how important this election and the plight of the average American citizen. I wish the media would focus on who is being sexist in this campaign. The Republicans are famous for projecting their image onto others. They are the ones who are sexist. They name Palin their VP and then they become so protective about her. She can't be interviewed. She can't talk to the media. Don't they believe in her enough to let her talk on her own? Why did we have to wait two weeks before they hand selected the interviewer? And just who really is trying to make Palin appear to the public as a victim. The Republicans!!! That's why America needs to wake up. Don't let your emotions be so easily manipulated. If you're going to vote for McCain/Palin, make it because you believe they can make life better for you and your children. But for heavens sake, don't make it because you heard in an ad that Obama compared Palin to a pig (utterly untrue), or whatever!

The Republicans have had eight years in the White House and six of the past eight years in Congress and they've run this country into the ground. Now they're stonewalling Democratic progress in Congress with filibusters and vetoes. It's time to boot them out for good, at least for four years, and let the Democrats give it a chance, with Barack Obama and Joe Biden at the forefront of the country's leadership. A team of a Harvard educated lawyer and a 30-year Senate veteran?

Or a former POW & 24-year Senator , with a small town Mayor & Govenor?

What really surprises me are the negative attack ads from Obama. Where is the focus on issues? Didn't he run on a message of change from the politics of old?

The recent "lipstick on a pig" attack was just the Republicans taking a page out of the Obama campaign strategy that attacked the Clintons before South Carolina. Taking a sound bite out of context to attack your opponent.

But, Obama's recent rants all sounds like the same old politics to me!

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   September 12th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

This is the same thing we saw when the race was close with John Kerry and George Bush. At some level, it's the questions that are being leveled to Mccain and Palin, but their answers to them are very scary, and every American should be able to foreshadow what their plans are if they come to power. They want to keep Russia's power in check and exploit vast resources from third world, while raising a fledgling China as its younger brother. If Mccain/Palin come to power and they continue to use the US as an example of our power, then I guarantee you all that we become a third world nation in 30 years, fighting on the streets with heavy, heavy ethnic cleansing going on.

What happened to the time, when we all realized it was a mistake to re-elect Bush? And you would hear from almost everyone, "no matter what! We will not elect another Republican next time!"

Have we all forgotten???

McCain might have been a good choice in 2000, even 2004, but with what he's preaching now (vs. then), there is NO difference between his ideas and Bush's policies.

If McCain wins, how long will it be before we're saying "no matter what" again??? And then we forget in the next election year?

I was a strong supporter of Obama. But I am confused with one thing...

Why did he not select a woman as a vice presidential candidate when he is all for change. He denounced a woman backed by 18 Mil voters and now seeking her help to win. This is what is silly in politics. Who are you kidding ?

Here are my questions:
1. Why did you not select Hillary as VP
2. Why are your women staff paid less than male staff while John Mccain's women staff are paid more than his male staff.
3. You are talking lot about change, but you dont even know how Washington works, how will you bring change and what kind of change will you bring ?
4. You have no military experience. Why did you not sign up for military service. Do you know what it is to send sons and daughters to deployment ?

Here's another lie about Obama. He's qualified to be President and he's a Christian.

Susan, Pennsylvania   September 12th, 2008 5:25 pm ET

I am so pleased Obama sticks to the truth. Actually, I am very proud of his campaign for not going straight to the gutter right away – we are so used to dirty politics we have trouble accepting a new way of doing things. He's pulled a few great ones today and I am sure there is more to come.

The McC/Parrot ticket is flailing after what, two weeks? I guess my grandma was right – what goes around comes around. They will find out.

RuthieM   September 12th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

If "we can;t afford 4 more years of George Bush" then where is the ad saying and showing so? The American people need to know this too.

Sue   September 12th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Obama – high road
McCain- the slimest campaign ever – maybe a little bit desperate.

Every ad McCain releases spews with lies.

Amber   September 12th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I am positive that these ads are fabricated, McCain himself said today that he has asked Obama on a number of occasions to have a town hall meeting – this was the reason given for his ads today on the view

Mike   September 12th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

I saw the ABC Palin interview. The Repugs are so happy that Barbie did not faint or cry. But at best she would get a C – grade. She was in total agreement with Bush and McBush on putting the Republic of Georgia into NATO. Even though she understood that we could now be in WW3 with Russia over nothing but an internal Georgian Ethnic dispute. This is why our European Allies were far wiser than us and refused to admit Georgia into NATO until these disputes are properly settled. Also when asked about the 'Bush Doctrine", she was totally lost. She should have just admitted that she did not know. But instead Palin stammered, and tried to bluff her way through the question very poorly. She looked like she was back in time thirty years ago on the Beauty Contest stage, about to blurt our 'World Peace'!

Stop this Political correctness stuff and then we will see who is the real fiend.....Obama better be careful what you wish for u just might get it. ..

Most are total lies and the others are at best half-truths. Factcheck.org has shown them to be lies and halftruths. It is not just Obama saying they are lies – IT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE LIES! John McCain has run a despicable campaign so far and with the Bush attack dogs now running his campaign it is only going to get worse.

This election has shown me its ok for blacks to die for their country, help build the country, pay taxes, etc.....but alot of people do not consider us just as qualified to be the President of the USA.

People would rather have 4 more years of a bad economy, Wars, housing slumps, etc.....then to vote for Obama. When I travel from country to country...alot of people from other countries consider Americans arrogant and hypocritcal. We tell other countries about democracy and equal rights while we try to deny them to individuals here.

This election has the ability to change that view. Those who wont vote for Obama because of his polices (no problem). Those that are trying to make up any little thing just because he is black...you are destroying our country. Grow up

debkansas   September 12th, 2008 5:19 pm ET

I am a democrat, but i just don't trust Obama. When running against Hllary he was against everything she stood for saying she was old government. Then he turns around and picks Biden as his vp. I don't get it. I don't believe anything that Obama says anymore. He is a flip flopper. He says one thing and does another. I don't like our choices of nominees. May God help us all. Now I hear they are going to allow 10,000 of Iraqies into our country starting in October. All this is really scary and I see our country being put in dangers way. I don't understand why our government (republicans and democrats) won't protect the citizens of America. We don't have enough jobs now, we can't afford our homes, can't afford insurance, we are giving up everything we have worked so hard to get. We are worried about sending our children to college. We are worried what our country will be like for our grandchildren. All our government worries about are the people of other countries. They get more foreign aid (food, housing, medical care, etc.) Americans can't afford none of these and our government doesn't care if we lose it all or not. They chose to turn their head when it comes to taking caring of America. Are the Iraqies that come into our country, are they the ones that hate us, do they want to kill us. Our lives are so uncertain, are we going to be able to keep ourselves safe. If Washington doesn't stop with this cramp they are doing to us, we will not be safe in our own homes. God Bless America. Everyone needs to pray that God helps guide our politicians.

John McCain has been in Washinfton for 26 yrs, and all he has gotten us is the highest gas prices in history, record home foreclosures, an illegal war,an unknown VP selection and no idea as to how to get us out. And he has not been a POW for the past 26 yrs, so he cannot hide behind that. So the only other reason is bad judgement, period. You can believe what he says if you like but the evidence is right there in your face. McCain is hiding in plain sight. He disrespects America by telling us we cannot talk to Gov. Palin until he says so but this is OUR potential VP. WHAT HE IS SAYING IS SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP and wait until I say you can talk. This is exactly how he is going to run his WH. It is amazing that people can be so gullible. You have all of the facts in front of you and still you are blinded by one thing and one thing only May God help us.

David in Illinois   September 12th, 2008 5:18 pm ET

FINALLY! McCain's lying ways are being acknowledged and counterattacked with truth.
Everyone goes around saying McCain is a "man of character...." Blah, blah, blah. Maybe he was at one time, but NO LONGER. His ads are lower than low. Even Jonathan Alter of Newsweek has said he's known McCain for 20 years but has lost all respect for him because of the tenor of his campaign and the gutter-politics ads. He specifically cited the ad from McCain that said Obama wanted to start teaching sex education in kindergarten. What an awful distortion. What flat-out LIE. How desperate does that make him??
And why isn't everybody noting how much of a lightweight Sarah Palin appeared to be during her interview with Charlie Gibson. She's not ready! She knows so little about world affairs. And 50 plus days isn't going to give time to figure it out. Maybe in 50 years.
McCain should be retiring, not running for the highest office in the land. He no longer has the respect to be commander in chief.

Paris, You're a perfect example of someone who only listens to Rush. You're talking about two different things, or didn't Rush tell you that. The tax cut is a Tax Cut, period. The second rebate check is a completely separate item, to get the economy moving again after the Bush/McSame non-policies have put our country in the toilet.

If you make less than $250K per year, you Will have your taxes lowered. And judging by statement, I know you make less that $250K, probably less than $30K. You're the ideal sector that Rush and the others like him at Fix News preach to, the uninformed voter who will not read anything on their own, to find the facts, the truth. *********************************************************************

HUH?

Wow, McCain really does appeal to the lower educated voters!

Kaching   September 12th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Many voters say they vote based on character rather than the issues. Now, how can you tell that someone has "character" whatever that is?
Presumably, a person with character speaks with his or her chest puffed out – that is pretty much a sure sign. Also, he or she will thump the rostrum or wag his or her finger, which is proof positive of character. Also, someone with character will get really huffy if he's criticized; a "how dare you question my motivation!!? Don't you realize that I have character?"

The whole "character" thing is idiotic. "Character" is a concept from the Victorian Age. Psychologists cannot find "character" in the brain because it does not exist. The myth, of course, is that people with "character" exhibit all of the boy scout virtues in any situation: honesty, reverence, respect for authority, respect for tradition, etc. Therefore, a person with "character" will always do the right thing. It is a nonsense concept. George W. Bush has plenty of "character" but no brains. He looks people in the eye and sizes up their "character" rather than think. John McCain has plenty of "character" but his "character" changes from time to time.

It is hogwash, but it gives a candidate who would be rejected on the issues a chance to get elected if there are enough stupid voters.

Terry, Butte, Mt   September 12th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Being fair and telling the truth are sometimes two different things. The Main Stream Media tries to be fair and with that sometimes does not report the truth.

The MSM needs to call the liars out on any side. The networks need to refuse to run commercials that are flat outright lies.

The American People need and deserve the truth.

CNN is getting better but sometimes speaks half truths like Candy Crowleys report last night saying, "both candidates are for some sort of timeline for leaving Iraq," and "both candidates agree that Afghanistan needs more troops." Both without mentioning that this has been Obama's policy for years.

Fairness = The truth, the WHOLE truth and nothing but the truth.

It makes me said and angry, that as the whole world watches America, John McCain is making plain he believes his campaign's statement that this election "is not about the issues"....outright lies, hateful juvenile name calling that likely has Karl Rove beaming with vicarious pride, entrenched in Washington for 26 years, backing Bush 90% of the time, then wrapping himself in the mantle of "change" promoted by Obama once he saw the demand for change in a very disgruntled public, relying daily on vapors of insults and deceipt to try and distract us from his sheer lack of substance....." I was a POW, vote for me"....and we want to export "democracy" to the rest of the oil rich world at the barrel of a gun? John McCain should be deeply ashamed for dragging us all down with him while America's wounds festers...and, no doubt, Bin Laden chuckles somewhere, his best work done FOR him this last tragic eight years.

Michelle   September 12th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Obama is right. Do not let McCain distract you from the real issues, but do not let him take left handed false jabs at you. McCain is from the same politcal upside down factory of evil Karl Rove that got Bush elected twice, lies, smoke screens and mirrors. McCain and Paulin will be more of the same as Bush, and look at the sad condition our country is in today after 8 years of Bush...keep reminding people of our sorry state. 70% of the europeans polled want Obama to win. The rest of the world hates us, we are in a war that no one can tell me why we are there in the first palce? Explain your tax plan in laymen terms...spellout the differences between you and McCain. I do not believe he would ever give you a cabinet position...he owes to many washington insiders favors...and has 169 lobbyist....6-10 of them are his top aides and advisors for the election,. Nothing wrong with a little push back...stick to the issues and let Biden beat the hell out of Palin.

My goodness, there have been quite a lot of lies from the McCain Camp about Senator Obama, his views and plans on issues, indeed. Why, anyone who knows history, current events, and has been paying attention to both sides of this campaign should have noticed unless of course they are limited in their thinking. It's quite refreshing that Obama has not stooped to the same tactics. I can't wait for him to be the next President. Honor will be restored to the White House.

When they don't have any policies, they just lie. It's about time we started calling them exactly what they are, LIES! The media has been sugar coating all these lies, not calling them out. So I guess either the press longer cares about truth, just as long as it gets viewers and/or readers. McCain and Palin just tell lie upon lie upon lie and the press just says, oh, ok, here's a good story.

There have been so many flat out lies by McCain and Palin and they don't get called on the carpet for the lies. Why not?

GET REAL.   September 12th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Think about the world we live in and tell me whether lies matter or not. People live and breathe on false hope, teenagers (and some adults) are trying to escape what is "real" through drinking, fear drives decisions, and reality seems pretty bleak.

You tell me... would you rather be living in reality or living a dream? McCain is presenting a dream, but it's more palatable for people who are afraid of Obama or what he might represent. Obama is offering real hope, but he makes it clear that (as a condition to accepting his hope) you have to accept reality. People don't want to.

You say "wake up, Republicans," and they say "don't bother me, I'm dreaming." Now we're hoping for Obama to slap them hard enough, but he might not do it. I choose reality, as bleak as it may be. But I'm also okay with paying more taxes too (presuming that money doesn't go to waste the way the Republicans have wasted it... see Denver oil drug/sex scandal, All Children Left Behind, Iraq, etc.), so what do I know, right?

Point in fact: A smaller government that more aggressively legislates morality is ten times more of a "big brother" oligarchy than a big government that's working "for the people."

shawn   September 12th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

It seems like the republican election machine really started to become underhanded and "sneaky" about the time Newt Gingrich came out with his new plan for America around '94 (athough there was Watergate 22 years before) and since then the smear tactics have gotten more and more cunning and snakelike. Remember the swift boat campaign? I totally understand where Obama's campaign is coming from when they say they don't want to stoop to that level of smearing that insults thoughtful americans' intelligence. Hold the moral and political high ground, Obama! Attack on the issues! Don't sling mud!

SONGBIRD MCCAIN   September 12th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Paris, do your research...it is a tax cut

McCain will tax your health care benefits actually raising your taxes!!

The most productive welfare reform – that gave incentives to get people OFF of welfare – came from Clinton, a Democrat. Obama will continue to strive to have our most vulnerable lift themselves out of poverty.

The only welfare the GOP is interested in is corporate welfare. You know, the taxes us hard working Americans pay to benefit the super rich CEOs who run their companies into the ground and then bail out with golden parachutes.

DLH – put down the kool-aid. The 57 state comment was during the primaries and he was referring to the 57 contests including caucuses, primaries and also included Puerto Rico. He went to Harvard, if you really think he's too stupid to know how many states there are, it is pretty clear that you are the stupid one. As for the other irresponsible behaviors, he is simply suggesting that you can "Conserve" energy by doing simple things. You remember conserve right? That's the thing that Republicans used to be known for.

CM   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

He's right. Even the MSM and independent parties dubunked most of McCain's ads as lies or factually untrue.

Its really too bad that some people still believe everything McCain puts in an ad as evidenced by the posting here from his supporters. Some even claim to be the 'thinking' ones.

Explain how electing the same old crew will give us different results? McCain doesn't even remember where he stands anymore and falls back on campaign rhetoric when questioned. At least Barbara Walters kept asking him the questions and not letting him dodge.

You 'thinkers' might want to consider what his answers should be and why he is avoiding talking about the issues.

Gimmick FIRST   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Please remind America that McCain and his friends are for the Iraq war.

That war is costing us what? $500 million per day? I thought McCain and his friends said they will not be big spenders?

Also reported that most of "good spots" in which McCain has suggested to drill has AREADY BEEN SPOKEN FOR!!

more gimmick, more of the same!

It is amazing. I can tell which people posting these comments are listening to Rush Limbaugh. Here's a tip: try thinking for youselves instead of a pompous moron with his head so far up his hind end that he can see his own lungs!

Daryl from Seattle   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

He's much more sincere and capable than McCain is. Naturally in politics you have to try and appease as many people as you can, but the hard fact is some will be left out in the cold. The Republicans of late have chosen to leave about 95% of us out in the cold. At least we know what Obama stands for, being a Democrat. He's more of the people, for the people. McCain's view is that the people are here for him and his ideals of the rich getting richer off the average citizens.

Obama will CUT TAXES for 95% of America   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Obama will CUT TAXES for 95% of working Americans.

Under Obama's tax plan people making between $30,000 and $66,000 a year will receive a $1000 tax CUT.

Under McCain's tax plan people making between $30,000 and $66,000 a year will receive only a $312 tax cut.

Barack Obama will LOWER TAXES for most of America.

Seek the truth America.

The Republicans don't care about you, they care about raping the American taxpayer out of more money to hand out to the wealthiest 5% of the country.

This is REAL people.

Check the facts and be honest with yourself about your vote!

All of this will come out in the debates.

Pay attention!

Robert, Miami, FL   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Obama needs to keep talking about issues and plans for the future.

Both candidates should try to stay with the big picture and not get sidetracked by the obsession with imagined offenses and 24/7 reportage of verbal gaffes.

The hypersensitivity to the lipstick comment, is a great example of what the Republicans should NOT be wasting our time on. It's simple enough to read the quote and see what Obama was talking about. Trying to make it personal and drag gender and political-correctness into it is not what I expect from conservatives or just from mature people in general.

Brian   September 12th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

you can't expect republicans to tell the truth......

KenB, MI   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

fighting against lies and corporate lobbyist is difficult at best but not impossible...McCain has lost control of his campaign...telling the American people what they want to hear has its limits...telling the truth and addressing the issues of what America needs will collapse a wall of lies.

Sarah Bell   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

The issue isn't Sarah Palin's experience. The issue is John McCain's judgment in pandering to his party by picking someone with such inexperience. Obama might not have years and years of experience, but WE chose him. The American people. Not John McCain and his Karl Rove disciples. Obama has the judgment to lead and we trust him to do just that. We know he'll do just that. Give him a chance for crying out loud. Sure, you might not know for sure what you're going to get w/ Obama, but you sure know exactly what you're going to get with John McCain. More Bush/Cheney/Rove. You're seeing it right now. Sneak peek call it.

S-Man   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Chipster   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Paris: The rebate check from the Bush Administration was to "stimulate the economy." But you're saying a rebate check from an Obama Administration would be welfare?

I'm really tired of hearing people sound the alarm that the Democrats will tax and spend. Yes! They will! That's how government is supposed to work. The job of government is to defend the nation and promote the general welfare. That isn't welfare as in handouts – that's welfare as in investing in education, energy, safe foods, emergency relief – things that make our nation better now and for the future.

That's what the people want but those things cost money. You can do what the Republicans do – borrow and spend – but the bills come due eventually. For what we're paying China in interest right now, we could spend a lot of money on health care and veterans benefits.

So, the bottom line is this: do you want to pay taxes now or more taxes later? do you want to borrow and spend or pay as you go. No one wants services discontinued so pay the bills! Borrowing is killing us.

Voice of Reason = Obama/Biden   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

As a Canadian observer, I am frustrated that the American public may be duped into giving the Republicans a third term. Barack Obama is the best thing to happen to the world community, and if the US doesn't want him, we do!!!! Come on up!

Wal-Mart Mom, Cincinnati   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

You know Barack, you lost the election when you not only didn't pick Hillary but you both demeaned and debased her at the same time.

Women, especially white women have left you in droves and you are now permanently trailing in the polls. You can't demean Sarah Palin because she's too tough and might stick an M-16 up your nose.

America loves Sarah Palin and not necessarily on the issues, so she's unattackable there. They've fallen in love with her persona. Women want to look like her and men want to sleep with her. You can't fight that with issues.

You lost. Bye Bye.

Jason in NY   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Obama's consistent hypocrisy is truly astounding. Obama, the election is indeed "too important and serious to be playing silly games"–so why are you starting and playing them?!

You're the one whose campaign attacked Palin right after her selection was announced. You're the one who made the "lipstick" gaffe. You're the one whose supporters keep spreading a ton of lies about Palin–whether it's about who's Trig's mother, membership of the Alaska Independence party Party, banning books, and on and on.

You're the one who questioned Palin's experience when you've never had any executive experience and have no major accomplishments in the Senate.

You're also the one who lied to everyone that you'd use public financing.

You're the one who said McCain would bring race into the campaign when he never did that and the only candidate doing that was you yourself by making such baseless accusations.

Instead of whining and spewing more lies and empty words, why not define some of the CHANGE you plan on making?

Rob   September 12th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

why isn't CNN saying it as well? The McCain campaign consists of nothing but lies – when was the last time any of their ads spoke to an issue or anything of substance? It's just noise and gimmicks coming from McCain to distract the media and people from the real issues which is the fact that Mccain offers nothing more then what Bush did. the media are the refs in this and need to take their responsability seriously... because these are serious times!!

Rob from Honolulu   September 12th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

So much for Obama being honest and fair – he is showing his true Chicago style politics. Distorting and taking out of context. When is he going to realize everytime he says that McCain and Bush are more of the same he loses votes. People want to know what type of change he is going to bring. You do not see him crossing over to work with the Republicans. There is always change, what we need is reform.

I am scared!!!   September 12th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Go Obama it is time you played hard ball with these gun clinchers, who at any moment may dedcide to shot any thing that moves. I am not concern who wins any more. WML   September 12th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Obama has lied as well. He isn't the nice, new kind of politician he paints him out to be and I'm a registered Democrat.

What gets me about him is this:
1. He can't take a stand on much of anything... convenient to not have a record to defend when you're running for president. How will you take a stand as president? (he has well over 100 votes of present while he was in the Illinois senate.)

2. He isn't a new politician. He talks well. He went back and chose a career politician to run with him and someone who knows foreign policy because he doesn't. Aren't these the same charges he leveled against Senator Clinton and now Gov. Palin? And, while McCain is older, he has a clean bill of health. She may not become president, while Obama stands a good chance to.

American dream is alive and well!!   September 12th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

DLH – that's because Obama has insight into what is actually going on with the world. Americans are slaves to consumption – maybe you should do your research to what American's are doing to their own health, as well as the destruction of the environment. Ever hear of global warming before? Like I said, do your research before you criticize Obama's plan to restore our good standing in the world – and maybe even save it.

Frank   September 12th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Alright Paris, I'd need to do a little more research for a fuller argument against that, but how about you tell John McCain to stop saying that Obama is simply going to raise everyone's taxes? Tell him instead to say that he'll raise taxes on the people who are getting them for no reason and give out lots of "rebate checks" if that is in fact what he intends to do. I think that the average voter out there would take much more kindly to whatever sort of truth "rebate check" is, then "OBAMA'S GONNA RAISE YOUR TAXES"

cevans, tx   September 12th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

I honestly think the Republicans think it is okay to lie and be deceptive. The people do not have a moral bone in their bodies. And, what make it even worst, they call themselves Christians. God will deal with them in his own special way. The devils will go down in November. Lied about the war, lies about the economy and lies about the economy. They must really hate this COUNTRY to have treated the people living in it the way they have. Our only hope is that, GOD will have mercy on us and spare us another 4 years of this evilness...

It is true that in politics every side says things to their advantage, stretching the truth etc.

But in this campaign it seems to me that any strategic manipulation of information that the Obama camp has done, is far eclipsed by the amoral and grotesque lies of the McCain/Team-Rove camp.

It's time that the news outlets do a straight up comparison between the two and let the public know how much more ethical the Obama camp has been than the McCain camp which has become a UnStraight Talk Express.

Lookit, when our country faced tremendous obstacles of wartime aggression, the citizenry made great sacrifices. Sacrifices that you yourself I wager by the sound of you, hold them in high esteem for making. This is only different in that the threats are environmental and economic. I am so tired of hearing the comments by Republican commentators comparing Senator Obama and Governor Palin's level of experience.

I am a Obama supporter. Not because he is black, not because he is a great speaker. And quite frankly not because he is a politician of great experience.

I believe in Senator Obama because of what he has proven to me over the last 18 months.

Because of the stance he has and continues to express on every aspect of the issues both inside our borders and abroad. He has been grilled in the press, on the stage during debates, and he has had to express in detail what his beliefs are. Just like he should as a person running for the office of President. As far as I am concerned – through the vetting process of the last 18 months, I have come to believe he may not have 27 years in the Senate – but he does have the knowledge and judgement that I believe is needed at this time. Not least do I believe that his selection of VP was a choice of great consideration, keeping the interest of America and her children first and foremost at heart.

As for McCain. He is a man of greatest experience. But I do not agree with him on many many issues – many more now a days than say 3 years ago when I even campaigned for him.

As for Palin. I know very very little about her – I know of some decisions she has made that I do not agree with. But really, I wish since there is not much time left she would put it all out there in the most rigorous fashion. She needs to vetted like any other person running in this race. Especially considering her level of experience – exactly like Obama has had to prove to us who he is, his caliber and what he stands for.

The Republican ads are very nasty, everyone I have spoken with agrees this makes the Republicans look desperate and grasping at straws to try and win. The Sarah palin interview was another disaster. If Mr. McCain cannot finish his term for whatever reason, Mrs. Palin as President seems truly scary to me, this has nothing to do with the fact that she is a woman. She is probably nice enough but doesn't seem very Presidential . I am insulted because it looks as though she was picked for political reasons, not because she is qualified. If you love the country, you would choose someone very capable of taking over regardless of gender, not just to get votes from women. We are not stupid in America, we can see beyond the fluff.

Ken in Dallas   September 12th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

McCain claims abolishing earmarks will make a difference in the federal budget. That's a lie.

McCain says making corporations pay taxes is bad for the economy. That's a lie.

McCain claims the economy is in better shape than it was eight years ago. That's a lie.

McCain claims he supports a balanced approach to energy policy. His Lexington Project web page says he supports coal, oil, and nuclear, but treats renewable sources as incidental.

McCain doesn't say much else unless it's about Obama, and McCain lies about that.

McCain cuts and runs whenever confronted with a substantive issue. That's no hero.

About the only things McCain says that you can bank on are that he wants to go to war with more people than we're already fighting.

McCain doesn't want to change much, and the change he does want isn't progress.

Enough about McCain. Time to forget him.

He also has several other things on his record. Gov. Palin did call and complain about the trooper tasering his son. This is what anyone would do if they knew a child is being abused. The commishoner has already said he was not ask or told to fire the trooper. The fact is the trooper should have been fired. Ten year olds don't have a voice. That is a democratic legislator and its all about politics, with no reguard for the child.

McCain ads are full of lies. I've never heard Obama say anything about rebate checks. You all need to check your facts. What I have heard him say is that people making under 250K a year will pay less taxes than those making over that amount. And maybe no one is posting because we are out working our second or third jobs to make ends meet, thanks to the Bush.

I have come to the reality of understanding that America (as a whole) is still as racist as ever.

For McCain to allow and defend these lies is indicative of the fact that he knows it too! And, worst of all, he is using this racial divide for his own personal agenda.

Rove did it for Bush in 2000 and 2004... If the American people allow it the happen again, their fate will be unspeakable.

The Bush administration has been lying to us for more than eight years, but the Bush lies pale next to the crap McCain is feeding us. I think McCain has great faith in the stupidity of the American people and that would be the only thing that could get him elected. Let us hope that the American people aren't as dumb as he thinks they are and that the American people will resent McCain's lies. Yes, I think, there is a reason John McCain can't define honor; he doesn't know what it is!

Rena   September 12th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Bottom Line -

Senator Obama is looking out for all Americans and not a select few (like the wealthy). My goodness when are we going to wake up. When Obama said no war; we went in and look at the disaster behind it. When Obama said no Holiday gas tax Repugs mocked him. My question is where is the holiday gas tax? Right , it was a gimmick for the fools that's falling for Palin. Obama said talk with our opposing foriegn leaders they scorned him; now they are talking with Putin. Obama said withdraw troops responsibly; Repugs said no. Now they are withdrawing 8000 troops. Obama said give a time line; Repugs said no; now they have given a time line. Obama said put more troops in Afganastan, Repugs said no. Now they are putting more troops in Afganastan. So, my second question is, who has the better judgement? Who is responding more like a true leader? Well let me help you out it's not McKiller or McFalin the liar.

Senator Obama is the Chief in Command!!!!! Mckiller is hanging on his pants for the next command so he can go out and fulfill the mission. A young man with great judgement and fresh ideas that will lead us to be a better nation.

DanFango   September 12th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

The Republicans realized long ago that a lie can get halfway around the world before the Truth gets his pants on. They are masters of the art , all of them; Colson, Segretti, Atwater, Rove.

And of course, they all follow the Grand Master, Josef Goebels. People are always more ready to believwe a big lie than a small one.
Lying Works.

What's scary is that Obama said he's been in 54 of the 57 states and we can't set our thermostats on 72 degrees, drive SUVs, and eat as much as we want because the rest of the world isn't going to go for that.

Wow. This is the best you can do? This is what it all comes down to? Suddenly, the popularity of the Palin/McCain ticket, not to mention eight years of Bush is clear.

What about the Money sent to Palin in Alaska? That so call Thanks But No Thanks for the Bridge to Nowhere, but we will keep that money and Make a Road to Nowhere and pocket the rest!?

What is the real issues that Palins and her Neo Cons don't want the rest of America to know, since they want to break away from the USA?

well done, Barbara, Whoopi, Sherrie, and Joy. I wish you had more time to ask him questions.

I bet that Sarah Palin will not be on the view now, because they will try to keep her away from answering real questions. This is a joke!

"Not a tax cut, STOP lying to people Obama, rebate check is what you are proposing.
And that is another form of welfare."

...

You do realize that the Bush Administration did the same thing, and McCain supported them in it? Remember that check you got earlier this year that you probably cashed at Walmart and used to buy Dale Earnhardt memorabilia and ammunition? That was "welfare". Thing is, Obama will do it by taxing windfall oil profits (something Palin has done in Alaska!), but Bush did it by going in more debt to the Chinese and calling it "economic stimulus".

NH for Obama   September 12th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

they have been lies, check fact checker.org it spells out all the "lies". Cnn does a good job too but they get into the real details. Obama might be a politician but he is honest. He might tell half truths or parts of a story, but he doesnt completely make thing up out of the blue. McCain and Palin are nothing new, same old stuff, lies and rethoric. we need change, not McCain adding Palin to his ticket and now calling themsleves REAL CHANGE FOR AMERICA! give me a break. If it was Truly America First McCain you would have picked a qualified VP, not a female to try to grab female votes. its disgusting.

Obama proposes ONE TRILLION DOLLARS in new spending, tax cuts for 95% of Americans and also promises to balance the budget. Then he has the unmitigated gall to call McCain a liar?

You can't spend more, collect less and also balance a budget that is already running a deficit. That's not even complex economics. That is first grade math.

There are a lot of sour repubs online today. Maybe you should go back to the drawing board and continue to think of more inane reasons why Sarah Palin is qualified and experience, despite the nonsensical words that come out of her mouth.

CapoCastillo   September 12th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

I think the Republicans are campaigning on a foundation of sand right now. it'll be interesting to see their tactic now that the mystique of Sarah Palin is dying. Without the diversion of their Trojan Horse [or pig, or pitbull...] to deflect their lack of any articulated policy position, they're stuck with negative ads and swift boating.

What i don't understand is one of the few articulated positions McCain has, energy, has been 'Invest in the same things Barack has been advocating for months: Solar, wind, bio fuels, clean coal... but we want offshore drilling too!'. Obama should be exposing this to the American public and explain, 'Hey, the only ideas that John McCain has actually illustrated, are ideas that I have come up with. if you want the guy who's got the best ideas to move this country forward, go to the source'.

They don't have anything specific regarding their "change" policies. They are truly hypocrites, and liars. Obama and Biden need to stay on message and keep outlining their plans. Let McCain/Palin bury themselves in their lies and deceptions. Americans are on to their games. However, some of the things they say are truly scary.

I've noticed a horrible trend in the media coverage. Over and over, I hear 'how should Obama deal with McCain's attacks' and 'Obama should hit back' and 'Obama shouldn't hit back' etc etc. But I never hear 'McCain shouldn't be running false attacks' or 'McCain's campaign is in trouble because it's putting out lies in its ads' or 'McCain is lying'. Shouldn't our focus be first on the issues of the campaign? And then shouldn't we call out the side that's telling lies and making false attacks?!?!?!

I have thought for a very long time that McC will say & do anything to win an election. I feel sad that he's proving that to be true. My husband is a viet nam combat vet & he would rather die than use his experiences to further his career or to force his opinions on others. He is very conflicted about McC. On the one hand he has great respect for the years McC suffered, yet abhors the way McC is trying to capitolize on it. My husbank also points out that McC was NOT a leader of men in combat. McC was a lone pilot making decisions that affected him most of all, he did not lead a platoon on a daily basis on the ground.

If voters really want to reform government, they can start by reforming the election process. Why is everyone demanding that Obama get down in the gutter with the McCain/Palin ticket rather than demanding that the negative ads stop. Why are we letting the mainstream media off the hook by allowing them to focus on the nonissues so they can improve their ratings. Why are people berating Obama for doing what we should be demanding all candidates do - stay above the fray and focus on the issues?

The biggest lie of this whole campaign season is that McCain is a Bush 3rd term. McCain isn't Bush. Why don't we hear that Obama has voted party line 97% of the time? Things were bad 2 years ago under a Rep. congress. The Dems made a lot of promises. Have they delivered/ NO! Have things turned around? No, they've gotten worse. Gas prices up 3X in 2 years. Unemployment up. Record deficits. Remember, Congress appropriates the money, not the President. So every dollar of deficit is due to what Congress authorizes. So if things are worse, and the Dems control Congress, and Obama supports the Dems 97% of the time, Obama is part of the problem!

Roland   September 12th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I expected McCain to be different in making his case. I thought he has some integrity. The moment his party adopt Rove’s sleazy attack at any cost strategy they divert the attention from focusing on the issues to personal attacks. The current series of attacks are testaments. Like Obama said Mr. McCain “you can put lipsticks on a pig but it is still a pig” that is the truth.

Mr. McCain, you could not come up with your own plan on issues so what did you do; you stole Obama’s Change and called it “reform”. I do not know what you will reform since you have been in Washington for 26 yrs other than reforming your dressing style. I do not remember any political opportunist I can compare to you. Your VP he one you did not properly vet, does not even know how to teach her own teen daughter how to abstain and she preaches abstinence. So Mr. McCain if you want to talk about sex education first discuss it with your running mate and come up with common view.

McCain's campaign and ads have lacked integrity from day one. Look at who he has chosen to surround himself with. Gramm, Bush, Rove, Cheney – HE"S obviously not an agent of change.

Look at his policies. He has voted with Bush about 95% of the time. He has admitted to the press on several occasions that he knows nothing about the economy. The overwhelming majority of vets are backing Obama. The overwhelming majority of foreign leaders don't want to talk to McCain. McCain AND Palin are against women's issues.

What does McCain REALLY got going for it? I just don't see it.

Bigbubba   September 12th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Obama will tell when the lies are bad enough. But he hasn't resorted to attack ads like the Republicans because he is using the issues for his ads.
I realize it would be easier to attack McCain on his age, lack of judgement and the fact that he is the only elitist in the race. Or Palin on her lack of ethics or any trace of caring about womens issues or the fact that she is willing to sell out her so-called religious beliefs to get elected.
Obama is better than that. McCain/Palin or Palin/McCain, if you look at how the Republicans are seeling this mess, obviously are not. Go team.

DeeJam - Los Angeles   September 12th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

If Obama was talking about Palin or McCain when mentioning lipstick, he should have said "You could put Lipstick on George Bush, but it's still George Bush." He didn't go there and I think most Americans can see the lies and deceptions the McCaign camp puts out.

DLH   September 12th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

What's scary is that Obama said he's been in 54 of the 57 states and we can't set our thermostats on 72 degrees, drive SUVs, and eat as much as we want because the rest of the world isn't going to go for that.

It is time for Senators Obama and Biden to clearly indicate to the voters why we should vote for them. They need to get their fire and focus back. They deifinitely have a positive, upbeat vision which they need to make clear. We, as citizens of this great country, cannot allow negative ads, soundbites, distortions, diversions and lies by McCain/Palin to dictate who the next President will be. Let's all rally around the Obama/Biden ticket and get this country back on track!

John Mccain says that he can win this war and that he knows how to win the war. Then why is he letting our kids die ? He should tell them.sounds selfish and unamerican to me.

Rick   September 12th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

What's a lie is that McCain = Bush. and unfortunately for Obama, a majority understand that at this time. Maybe Obama will lie often enough to change opinions, but I'll bet you don't see McCain hiding behind the Swift Boat defense every time the Obama camp says something less than flattering about McCain. Funny how Obama runs right to Swift Boat when attacked. People will see through that facade, too.

Interesting how Obama people try to scare us with McCain's health and the prospect of the most inexperienced VP in history taking over. If Obama wins, he'll be zero heartbeats from the presidency and will be our most inexperienced POTUS ever.

Deb   September 12th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

To me it is really scary that someone who originally refused to wear the US flag on his lapel . . and . . . studied in a muslim school . . and referred to “his muslim religion” during an interview and had to be guided to “Christian religion” by the interviewer . . and . . has a wife that publicly announced that she’s “finally” proud to be an American (now that hubby is up for election) . . and . . can’t seem to spit out a sentence without a teleprompter has even made it this far. God help America if idiots elect Obama as our next president.

McCain and Palin are out of touch with the country and there is no getting past that.
They do not discuss plans or how they are going to change things...come on Americia wake up.
For Mccain to say that he went negative because Obama did not do what he wanted, is the height of what we have dealt with for the past 8 years..he is more of the same. He is out of touch, and Palin..is inexperienced and just scary, when she comes accross as she did in the interview.
These two are dangerous,...no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Oh Please   September 12th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

You know, I'm getting REALLY sick and tired of these cognitively challenged, no-deductive reasoning skills having, see-green-and-believe -it's-red-totally-ignoring-reality-just-because-they-want-to-believe-that-its-red people who accuse the DNC of being sexist. What is that based on? The charge is absurd, and I'm not even a Democrat. The DNC picked a female vice president 20 years before the RNC did, the DNC had the first viable female candidate for President, the DNC fought for women's rights and women's issues years before it became fashionable to do so. It was people on the right who referred to those who fought for women's rights as "feminazi's". You people are being manipulated by the Republicans. There are PLENTY of Republican women that I would love to see be President, and that are just as qualified as any man out there (like Condalieeza Rice, Kay Bailey Hutchinson), but Sarah Palin is just being used for Political exploitation, and it is obvious that she is nowhere near ready for national governance. All throughout the primary, I saw Hillary Clinton supporters (not to diss Hillary, I actually have respect for Hillary, but the reasoning skills and equity of many of here supporters leaves much to be desired) absurdly accused blacks of "racism" for voting for Obama (which is dumb because racism by definition can't be expressed in the affirmative, and I didn't see Obama supporters going around accusing women who voted for Clinton because they wanted to see a woman President of sexism). It's true that many blacks voted for Obama out of pride and a sense that after their difficult history in this country, they would have chance to finally "make it" so to speak. But there were many women who voted for Hillary for the same reason, and blacks still would have voted for Hillary Clinton had she won the nomination. We still have yet to see whether many whites will vote for a 1/2 black person for President, it's never happened before. And look at all the white women voting for Palin now just because she's a white woman. Palin is a Religious fanatic who opposes almost everything that they stand for, and who has yet to be tested, and who hasn't had to prove herself to the American people in any way (talk about being selected not elected) but they'll vote for her just because she's a white woman. Blacks on the other hand, generally don't trust right-wingers, they don't care what color you are, and McCain could have picked any black candidate that he wanted, they still wouldn't have voted for them because they disagree so strongly with Republican policies and the Republican worldview

Shelly   September 12th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Wasn't the lipstick comment in reference to a comment that McCain made a year ago about Clinton's policies? I didn't think it was in reference to Palin's hockey mom comment. I think everyone - GOP, independents and Democrats - need to move on and start talking about the real issues.

The McCain/Palin boats has got alot of big holes in it. Only a matter of time before it sinks.

Emily   September 12th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Finally, it started to sink in, what four more years could mean. Of course, I wish America could wait until 2012 to elect Hillary Clinton as President.

But there may not be 2012 anymore if we elect Republican. We may be in the war with Russia (are you serious, nukes flying around?), our unemployment may be 20%, we are all dying without healthcare, in 2012. I really do not want the country to spend more money on more wars. In 2012, we may be in the State emergency.

Will it be four more years of the same or four more years of the worse? The economy and social situations are worse than 2000 now. So four more years of the same policy will bring four more years of the worse lives to us.

I wish Palin was a bit more prepared. She just can not say or has not said anything what she wants to do. That means in the end, it is McCain who will drive this country, and the poor lady will be jaded soon when she sees the truth of McCain and Republican party. How smart for McCain to bring in a very capable woman yet a woman who has no idea of how things worked in the last 8 years to fool people.

No four more years of the worsening lives.

This from that straight-talker of yore, who fervidly denounced the 2004 Bush campaign's Swift Boat character attacks on John Kerry's military record." [Editorial, 9/12/08]

Time Magazine:

[McCain] "is responsible for one of the sleaziest ads I've ever seen in presidential politics, so sleazy that I won't abet its spread by linking to it...." [Joe Klein, 9/10/08]

"A different category of dumb charge." [Ana Marie Cox, 9/10/08]

Annenberg Political Fact Check:

"The claim is simply false..." [FactCheck.org, 9/10/08]
The Chicago Sun-Times:

"McCain echoed a sexy–but misleading– line of attack made last year by Mitt Romney..." [9/10/08]

McClatchy:

"This is a deliberately misleading accusation." [9/9/08]

The Atlantic:

"The gap between the implication (Obama has liberal, radical views about sexuality) and the reality in this ad is pretty big and fairly consequential." [Marc Ambinder, 9/9/08]

Chi4Obama   September 12th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

The funny part is Obama doesn't even need to "Lie" to fight back hard against Republicans.

If the media would simply just report facts, then the rest would take care of itself.

For instance, we have not even scratched the surface with respect to all of the corruption that is surrounded by the VP Puppet, Sarah Palin.

Baby Boomer   September 12th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I live in Washington State and the economy is not "fundamentally sound" here.

Also, if we cut out all earmarks (100% cut as McCain wants) how many jobs would be lost in the USA? Am I missing something or doesn't some of these earmarks employee Americans? If we get a tax break from no earmarks most will buy foreign made products and most likely we will help support China not the USA.

Foreign Observer   September 12th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Obama won't lie. McCain will. This may well be why McCain will win. This is the country you - all of you - have created and countenanced, the country you profess to love and admire, the country you want to lead the world. Think about it.

FL Carole   September 12th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Most of the CNN Political commentators have "hit the nail" on the head. After his vacation, it's a different Obama. He's spending too much time on Palin, too much time defending himself. He has to watch his mouth. He needs to get back giving answers on the issues. I'm still reeling over Biden's saying that "Clinton would have been a better choice." The Democrats have to go on the offensive-play down the attacks-get POSITIVE.

Vic of New York   September 12th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

America has a decision to make. Ohio and New Hampshire are part of that decision:

Do you let your fears and biases be manipulated so that you hang yourselves with your own rope – that's the Republican way.

Or do you vote in your true BEST INTEREST and chase Bush, Rove, Cheeney, McCain and all their cronies back to the hole from Hell they came from?

Because, in the end this isn't about changing Washinton – it's about changing America.

Chris from NY   September 12th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

That's the same thing McCain warned Romney about:that he knows how to fight in the mud. He (McCain) wants to bring Obama down to his level and if he succeeeds he wins. To fight someone like McCain you have to stand your grounds and refuse to come down to his level. The bible said the truth shall set you free. Do what you have to and go to bed and sleep well at night than to keep telling lies and keep confessing same sin every day. What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and loose your soul.

mike   September 12th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I dont know what the whole fuss is about politicians are always going to be politicians. They all lie, some lie more than the others, and some lies are more glaring more than the other.

What is so annoying is how every treats this like its a big sport, like the super bowl or something. Both Candidates should come together and lets really fix America.

When alot of people are suffering and al they see is millions and millioins of money wasted on Attack ads, why in the world would they vote.

People please wake up and stop the childishness

Maybe people should be asking Obama how is he going to pay for all his promises.

Taxes cut for people under 250th. and that 7000 tuition break to college kids who do community service. Those are some big big budget proposals. If he is planning to raise capital gains, corporate, and payroll taxes for both these proposals he will bankrupt small and large buisness's and the country for that matter. We already owe China from the Bush years, so these outrageous earmarks from Obama will makes us the most vulnurable country in the world and put us worse in debt.

I watched excerpts of Obama's speech today, and he did exactly what he needs to do through the rest of the campaign. he got specific on how his tax policies would benefit more people and why McCain's new slogan for change is empty rhetoric after he's aligned himself so closely with the Republican party to win the nomination.

Looking forward to the final stretch.

Sadly, many Americans are just smart enough to register and vote but not smart enough to know propaganda or spin when they see it. The Democrats have to attack back, in the spirit of American national poliitcs, with prime-time advertising calling the Republicans out on their fabricated narratives and smokescreens. Where's the Democratic Party's prime time ad featuring Palin's famous "What is it exactly that the VP does every day" quote??? Let's go, Obama. Show the American electorate what they'd get if they go with the geezer and the gimmick.

JusLaugh   September 12th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

DUH! Tell us something we don't know....These lies, along with media manipulation is how the republicans win all their elections.

Sarah and McCain terifies the George Soros multiple front engaged in the Lie Factory process because McCain has seemingly, just maybe, pulled a fast one the entrenched power structure. McCain may be mouthing the obligatory dialogue in his speeches, he may just be planning to break the death grip on America as his last truly patriotic act for his country. If he does, he would go down in history as one of the greatest patriots in the Westen world. McCain found an outsider with real morals, who likes to slam corrupt politicians more than engage in the political pomp and show of public office. McCain found a real Christian, Sarah Palin, with steadfast principles who is untainted by Globalist DC filth.

Suggestion to the Obama campaign:

Create an ad (or a series of them) that asks the question:

Do you like being lied to? Don't you think voters deserve the truth from their candidates?

Then run footage from the various McCain ads that employ falsehood with subtitles that spell out the deception.

You've done some of this already, but need to make it personal:
Do YOU like being lied to? Don't voters deserve better?

"McCain would rather lose his integrity, than an election".

ted   September 12th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

If McCain really cared about our country, he never would have picked a cheerleader, he picked her to boost the campaign not for the future of the country. Worst thing would have happen to him is he would have lost elections – for this reason, he took a gamble for his Personal career and choose a good looking Cheerleader. Its almost equivalent to picking Paris Hilton – he would have got same publicity and lot of support from Men.

Role of VP is not a joke – its very important equally resonsible as President. I can't put this country at risk by thinking McCane will stay health for next 4years – what if something happens to him – its like giving authority to a person who doesnt know anything either economics or foreign policies. Already our president failed in economics and foreign policy tests.

McCain thinks that we are bunch of stupids .. he prob thinks, he will get all those republican votes + some independent women votes who backed clinton before + plus some narrow minded guys who will vote for hot babes..

I agree McCane did the right thing for his career(since this is his last and final chance) and for his party otherwise he would have lost this election miserably. But i can't risk my country, my future, my kids future with his choice of VP. I lost faith in him.

God Bless America...

Deborah Black   September 12th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I wish that Barack could keep himself above all the negatvie and devisive statements flying around, but when a coward and a liar is beating you up, you have to stand up. The American People expect that. John McCain started all this personal attack stuff and name calling, because it is what Geroge Bush did and it's how Republican's run their campaigns. I'm a mother a grandmother and a citizen of the United States, who used to look up to John McCain. McCain has sold out, just like his running mate. John McCain is acting like a coward and a pimp. Sara Palin did not fight the good old boy network, she joined it. John is just hiding behind her skirts.
They really do think that the American People are stupid and will fall for their viscious lies and personal attacks, as a substitute for facts. Look for the facts my fellow Americans, let's not be fooled again. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, then it is a duck. Lets get Sara to shoot it! It's hard out there for a Pimp John, not so easy for the woman either, but hey she made her bed, let her sleep in it.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   September 12th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Palin isn't qualified to be President if she isn't willing to engage the public with their open questions. If you can't interact with the public, then you can't be a public servant. McCain is just trying to run the clock out on Palin before anyone realizes that she is clueless. She could easily set the record straight on many of these internet rumors and scandals if she would just agree to give unscripted answers to real questions.

Empty attacks are what you do when you don't have a record to stand on. McCain doesn't have a record to stand on.

Out with the old. In with the new. McCain-your generation had your chance and you screwed it up for generations to come (especially financially). We can't afford more tax-cut and spend Republicans. We'll all be hauling our money in wheelbarrows in 20 years at this rate.

Actually Mr. Obama, Mccain agrees with Bush 91% of the time. He does not understand the economy because he is rich and owns 9 homes. his wife wore a $300K outfit to the GOP convention so they do not understand the struggles of the people who do things like community organizing to help the less fortunate.

Nadine, Cumming GA   September 12th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

The way a man runs his campaign is a huge indicator of how he will behave on the job. Dodging the issues, sidestepping the questions and outright lying is what we've been putting up with for the last 8 years. Do we really want more of that? Doesn't everyone remember the smears and "lies" and double-talk that got George Bush into the White House?

Please support the candidate who is thoughtful, intelligent, has high ideals and is trying desperately to stay out of the muck that the Palin/McCain ticken is mired in. (I'm not sure which of them is running for President)

That's RIGHT Sen. Obama, YOU should have your staff DRILL John McCain on WHY is it that a team of his lawyers are up in Alaska trying to "derail and delay" the investigation on Governor Palin? Why is it that all of a sudden, NO ONE is cooperating like they said they would, even Gov. Sarah Palin herself?

I think the Palin family and the McCain family thought this would be a slammed dunk, they thought her office would NOT be scrutinized before the election on Nov. 4th.

I would come out with Ads asking WHY is McCain laywers involved in Gov. Sarah Palin's ABUSE OF POWER investigation? Is the McCain camp paying for these Lawyers and are they Representing Gov. Palin NOW? Hummmm....

It's all smoke and mirrors with these people, whic his why they're resorting to even worse tactics like Michigan trying to exclude people from voting because they suffered a foreclosure. Shows you just how much they care about how much everyone is suffering, don't it?

Palin: "Somebody's big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they've had opportunities to meet heads of state."

Hmm, sounds like she says McCain is part of the establishment.

McCain: "I am prepared. I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time. I wasn't a governor for a short period of time."

Hmm, sounds like McCain doesn't think a governor would be prepared to be President.
