Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.
A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Does the Mccain camp know how to tell the truth? They are lying about every single issue! If they every detail their economic plans...I am sure that those will be lies as well!

Why do they continue to lie and lie without any remorse? It is amazing that Republicans who tend to want to lay a claim as being Christians have zero shame when it comes to telling a lie. The most shameful thing is that inspite of all the lies, Americans are still voting for them. Why? No wonder we are in this melt-down with Bush and company. Eight is enough. No more lies, no how, no way, no McPalin.

In the ABC interview with Charles Gibsonm did she not reference going to Iraq as well as Germany? She completly farbricated Germany or forgot with all her other world travels that she wasn't there?

how many lies has this woman told? yet the republicans keep backing her up. this is really getting to me. this is the sleaziest most crooked campaign yet in my lifetime. it is very disturbing. they (mccain palin) treat this as if it is a football game and they MUST WIN. the idea of them in charge leading us straight to ww3 is a scary thing. they are corrupt. why can't people see that and why do they get away with it? Obama has run a totally clean campaign-go ahead slam him, or his minister or whatever. he has been fantastic about not stooping to the sick level the Republicans have. Every day it is some other lie about Sarah Palin. BAD BAD CHOICE. SHE IS corrupt and McCain has sold out! He is NOT the man / maverick he once was.......now he is just another example of a crooked above the law rovian republican.

OK, her foreign policy experience consists of being somewhat closer to Russia than many Americans and also taking a trip to Kuwait.

Oh, and a re-fueling stop in Ireland. Do I have that right?

This is too funny. More lies. Wonder what else they will find if they look under a few more rocks. And I never knew being on the other side of a border means you went there or that a re fuel stop meant you had been there is anything but the broadest sence of the word..

These Obamanuts are pathetic. Every little stupid, fricking nuance they have to nit-pit. Not too many governors are travelling to Iraq these days. It took The Chosen One quite awhile to get there, you fricking idiots. Why don't you put out a press release comparing the number of trips The Moronic One made versus McCain! What is their obsession with comparing The Idiotic One to Palin!?

Never in Iraq? So what? How much foreign experience did Bill Clinton have when he was elected president? Ronald Reagan? Al Gore? Jimmy Carter? How did obama's Public relations show overseas add anything to his qualifications. Strutting all over Europe did nothing except build Obama's already overstuffed ego! How many people have been elected vice president of even president who had never met a foreigh dignitary? It is amazing how the liberal press who are overwhelmingly for obama are holding Sarah Palin to standards never before expected from a vice presidential candidate. Palin has proven her ability to cut to the chase and accomplish things. She is a brilliant, proactive person who can make a dozen correct decisions whiole Obama is still waffling and stuttering. What would a visit to meet the troops in Iraq add one tittle to anyone's qualifications for anything? Neither Obama nor Biden have ever had to make ONE decision as an executive of anything. I guess if I visited Iraq and Germany, I would be just as wualified as Obama!! I have made executive decisions, which he hasn't.

If the proven lies concerning her position on The Bridge to Nowhere, earmarks, and her constant evasion of questions during her interview with Charlie isn't enough to convince the undecided she isn't ready to hold national office then perhaps the attempt to pad her resume with travel experience will.

let me ask you this when did ireland become a refuel stop, i never heard such a thing , also it does not say how long she was there, since her iraq trip was not true as we are finding out,amd that about 1/3 of what she has said in her campain speeches are now being readdressed as she makes a diffrent statement to try and cover her mistruths, where was she comming from that called for a fuel stop in ireland and how long was she there, those are questions that should asked since mrs. palan has a way of streaching the truth to fit her needs, and why was the fact that she was in ireland never revealed she played it like it was a trip to iraq , now i know germany does not go to ireland to refuel, so again where was she comming from that required a fuel stop in ireland, was this a military craft, or commerical. 95 % of all aircraft has enough fuel to make the states, non stop , this was most likely a polictical junket. there has to be more to this than is being said, it should be investagated since she did not tell the truth about iraq. and all her emotion about being threre when she was not. again as i said i belive she says alot of things she says are just not true, also i would love to know why after her daughter was with child for at least 5 months and she never imformed the republican party untill after she had taken the v.p. postion. is that not a correct thing to do to her party, and how could the poeple checking her out see that her daughter was pregnant. you could of not missed that, no way. it appears that she will do anything or say anything to get what she wants. ken

Such a fraud. Lies, lies and more lies. Let her keep talking. The more she opens her mouth, the more she proves she is so unqualified to be Vice President, let alone President. She should stick to local politics and leave the national scene alone. What the heck was McCain thinking when he chose this woman?! Like Obama said, "they must think we're stupid". Both of them are starting to be one great big pain in the you know what.

Governor Palin seems to be extremely "creative" in her rhetoric. Unfortunately, she does not seem to realize that we live in an era of information and it's easy to check facts. Neither, it seems, does her runningmate. At the Saddleback Church, McCain said his deepest regret was "the end of his first marriage." He failed to mention that he ended it after his first wife was disfigured and seriously injured in an automobile accident. This has been widely reported in the European press. Neither McCain nor Palin tend to tell the "whole story." Lies of omission are still lies.

    Hey Republicans:

You are off to a very, very sorry start on getting Americans, and the whole world, once again trust us. You need to tell McCain and Palin's handlers to get off this track of exaggerations and other game playing. This is not good for any, any, any of us.

GO FIGURE, WHAT I DONT UNDERSTAND IS WHY WE HAVE PROVEN LIES OF PALIN AND MCCAIN AND THEIR TICKET IS UP BY 1 POINT OVER OBAMA/BIDEN.

I THINK THIS COUNTRY ISN'T READY FOR A BLACK MAN TO BE PRISDENT. BUT I AM STILL VOITING FOR HIM I THINK IN THE END HE WILL WIN AND THIS COUNTRY WILL EXPERIENCE REAL CHANGE, NOT JUST A PACK OF LIES, TO WIN YOURSELF AN ELECTION.

Its a no brainer to eat moosemeat and be a hockey mom in the north. As well, its easy to become someone up there because the population is nil! I know it because Im a woman from the north who has aspired and worked in a national and international realm.

She lacks a basic leadership entitiy–conflict resolution. If she was experienced, she wouldnt have a record of firing people

As a generous US taxpayer, I wouldnt want to see someone like her in office. She gets under a lot of peoples skins and the media loves her so fails to expose who she really is and isnt.
