Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier: McCain defends Palin's experience level

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Politically speaking I'm quite cynical, but the sheer number of exaggerations, half-truths, and at times out right lies emanating from the McCain camp is getting pretty staggering at this point. Of course we always see that kind of thing, and the Obama people have severely misrepresented facts as well, but the McCain campaign is so utterly brazen about it, even in the face of plain-as-day fact checks by neutral parties, that I'm actually a bit shocked.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. If McCain wins, i.e. if voters don't send a message that wildly dishonest campaigning is unacceptable, we might see even MORE dishonest campaigning in the future. I wouldn't have thought that was possible, but perhaps I'm not cynical enough.

Finally, these kind of stories are all the more disappointing given that McCain has spoken eloquently against these kind of dishonest tactics in the past. Though I don't support him for president, I did give him some money during his 2000 campaign and have up to this point respected him as a politician (this coming from someone who respects few pols in either party). That respect is now rapidly dwindling toward zero.

Don't care.. CNN.. you are spending WAY too much time trying to tear Palin down. Go back to trying to build Obama up and maybe you will be more successful.

    What a bunch of idiots.

Memo to Governor Palin: if you don't have any foreign policy experience just say so ... it's not a deal breaker. But when you lie about it you look like a fool & everyone sees Dick Cheney & the Bush administration all over again.

Stopping at an Iraqi border checkpoint isn't a foreign policy trip. Neither is stopping in Ireland to refuel your plane or vacationing in Mexico. The fact that you can see parts of Russia from Alaska doesn't mean you know Russian foreign policy. Stop pretending!

They don't care what they say. And to be honest, neither do their supporters. They are blind and vote on faith - and when you do that, rationale goes out the window. There have been many points in history where that type of public ignorance has helped prolong corrupted government - and in some cases this false sense of patriotism and implied mandate of God has led to the complete dismantling of nations, rotting them from the inside out. Search wikipedia for fascism for examples.

Everyday, Americans will hear more lies coming out of the republicans, the short time spot light was good enough to put them up in the polls. But now look at the Cnn polls : Mccain is now up by one point instead of two. What does it mean? Are people slowly coming to their senses after being deceived by the PIG ON LIPSTICK?

If there are any Clinton supporters who are voting for Palin because she is a woman .. I think you are dishonoring Hilary in the worst way possible. Essentially what you are saying is that for all of her ( Hilary's ) work she has done over the years.. traveling and meeting heads of state, working for health care reform and all of the intellect that she has as a person and a woman,,, that for all of that and more all it comes down to for you is gender and that any woman no matter how unqualified she is will do. You where not supporting Hilary the person but just the woman and that is sad. This election is too important to come down to something as silly as simply selecting someone based on gender or race.I think the interview on ABC was terrifiyng at best.. when asked what kind of reform she would bring to Washington, her reply was to "find effiecenies in departments and agencies," that may well work for a compartmentalized state but we are talking about the federal goverment that is involved in global economies.I am a simple person from Brooklyn and I understand that scares me to think that a person who is running for the VP of the United States doesn't and that the person running for the Presidency would pick her to be in that position. Enough!!
