Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Ouch. My enthusiasm for her pick as VP has really gone downhill this past week. If McCain's PR people could just buckle down and do their jobs right, we would have a good, solid Republican campaign. Palin doesn't need to be Superman, and that's what they keep trying to make her into.

Palin has memorized many talking points which she keeps repeating over and over . Whenever she is asked a question, she pulls out one of her talking points because she does not know the answer. Her ideas are that of the 1960s. Her thought pattern is of that era. I believe McCain chose her because his mindset is of that time period. They are both of the 1960s. It is regrettable that American women are identifying with her. Seems like they are yearning to go back to the 60s.
Palin does not have enough education and experience. She does not have the temperament and poise for this job.

I AM SO HAPPY WITH THE MEDIA . . .

Not because they are digging up dirt. (Leave that to the tabloids). But because the media has honorably taken up the responsibility to do the job McCain's organization has purposely and "effectively" left undone.

McCain is the oldest Presidential nominee to run for POTUS, but he has constant bouts with cancer. Extra effort should have been done to ensure the Republican V.P. was thoroughly vetted to be POTUS in case McCain never made it to the swearing in ceremony.

McCAIN'S JUDGMENT AND WISDOM MAKES HIM "NOT QUALIFIED" TO BE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF. McCAIN HAS PUT POLITICS AHEAD OF THE NATION'S INTEREST.

Does 12 feet make a difference as to political experience? Come on, this is non-news, and I think both sides would agree.

  6. Palin has more experience than Obama

She likely saw the troops more than Obama.

If Obama is about change in DC why is his VP pick someone that has been there over almost 40 years????? That is real change.

He could have picked Hillary and than that would have been some change.

.... and she can see Russia from the Governor's office!

Exaggerations and bold-faced lies are part and parcel of the "fear and smear" party.

What really annoyed me today was the report that McCain voted the same as Obama on an issue in the Senate but is using Obama's vote in a Spanish speaking ad attacking Obama!

Already the news is " McCain defends ...... " whatever the issue is this hour – sounds like a replay of the Bush administration to me!

    Don't lie to me.

The worms are now really coming out of the woodwork!! All the lies, plus ongoing investigations back in her home state, plus all those words uttered directly from her mouth – they are sufficient even to scare Cheney and Rumsfeld!!! Yeah, sanctions on Russia, fight to defend Georgia – where did this hawk crawl out from? The rest of the world is shuddering to think that Americans could even consider such an ignorant and unknowledgeable person for the highest office in the land – yes, that's right, highest, because she is just a heart beat away, and seeing the old man ploddering alongside her, reinforces the truth of how effective he would be. Save us from this kind of hell before it is too late.

Day after day I wonder, why does McCain need to lie about Palin? Did she lie to him? The old McCain seemed honorable and trustworthy, now he doesn't. This is sad

when Bush was called a lightweight, he was backed up by Cheney. here, cynically, they're putting the lightweight behind someone they believe won't live out his term.

AMERICANS HAD BETTER WAKE THE HELL UP..AND SOON. ESPECIALLY WHITE WOMEN ACROSS THIS COUNTRY WHO VOTE REPUBLICAN.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON VOTING FOR MCCAIN AND PALIN, WHO HAS NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER THAT QUALIFIES HER FOR THE 2ND MOST POWERFUL JOB IN THE COUNTRY, AND POSSIBLY THE FIRST, DO NOT SAY THAT YOU PUT YOUR FAMILY, YOUR CHILDREN, THEIR FUTURES AND YOUR COUNTRY FIRST. BULL!

MCCAIN IS USING PALIN AS HIS CAMPAIGN BARBIE DOLL AND AFTER ALL THE STRIDES THAT WOMEN IN THIS COUNTRY HAVE MADE OVER THE YEARS, IT WILL BE A HUGE LEAP BACKWARDS IF THEY ARE ELECTED. THE IGNORANCE OF WOMEN ACROSS THIS COUNTRY IS ASTOUNDING.

MCCAIN AND PALIN WANT ONLY ONE THING....TO WIN AT ANY COST!

THEY HAVE TAKEN THE PHRASE "COUNTRY FIRST" AND MADE IT MEANINGLESS...JUST WORDS.

Cnn would have run this lie in loops if it was Hillary or obama! Your not even talking about the facts that he said Rov v Wade should never have gone into law, that it was a bad law says Mccain on the view! You see he was in the upper bracket in income, and any female in his family could afford to go over sea for an abortion! His relatives wouldn't have had to take a back ally abortion that killed women, and the bleeding and lack of oxegon left moms dead. Young girls and women doing home rememdies to abort their unwanted children from rape and incest during those years before Rov v wade! Let me remind you of the health care cost of women comeing into the emergency rooms with botched abortions, or home remedies that destroyed their bodies and often in the end killed a lot of women, and babies ! Is this what john mccain wish's upon every women in the U.S, to go backk to the old days, and women dieing all over america?

But don't forget Alaska is soooo close to Russia (...) if that doesn't make her an expert of foreign affairs, what does?

I wonder how much longer we'll see US tourists travelling over here who in public pretend to be Canadian. Listening to Mrs. Palins view of the world it'll take a while.

What a schock. Another lie from the Rebublicans. That is all they can do. A bunch of lying, lawbreaking right wing zealots whose only hope of winning is lies and false ads and hoping voters are stupid, which unfortunately many of them are.

How can Sarah Palin be an agent of change?!! In her first two years as Governor she put in EARMARK requests totaling almost a HALF OF A BILLION DOLLARS. She never sold the Jet on ebay...In fact, she didn't even come up with the idea since the Alaska state government had been auctioning big ticket items on ebay well before she became governor. It doesn't end though...The Chef that she "let go" is still collecting a salary...What am I missing? I know my facts are correct. Why do people still defend her?
