Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Now is the time, now is the moment to erase the media frinzie of this young, very inexperienced, governor. Take back this campaign by forcing the Republicans to face the issues instead of looking at the faces and emptiness of their so called platform. Now is the time to continue the charge you have began because Barack Obama is truly our ownly hope for a future that will allow our grandchildren to grow up in a safe, responsible country that puts them first. YES WE CAN!!!

At this point, after her string of lies and distortions, I wouldn't giver her the benefit of the doubt on any statement. It seems like they're lying about anything and everything, even things that wouldn't even matter.
CNN – please stop opening topics for comments, and then never posting the comments!
Why is the common conversation about how Palin did in her interview with Gibson – 'well she did better than I would do' or 'most people that I know couldn't answer that either'. Shouldn't the comparison be to other potential VP picks?!?! How do you think Pawlenty or Jindal or Ridge would have fared in that interview? Or even any randon governor? I think the answer is that her performance was subpar compared to those others. And that's just not good enough for someone campaigning to be VP.

Please media continue to explore and reearch everything that she has said because she LIES or speaks in HALF TRUTHS! Never, I have I been more frustrated as I am now because of the LIES on half of the McCain Campaign! They lie so much that I wonder if they know what the TRUTH is, some "Christian" she is? Or maybe the 10 commandments don't apply to the McCain Campaign!

Alaska receives more earmarks than most states yet. She hired a lobbyist as mayor to get MORE! Again, she must have the belief that it doesn't apply to her but to everyone else!

Look at Alaska high school drop out rate
    Look at their education system
Look at their health care system
Look at their values, drill oil at ANY cost who cares about the environment ...with Palin in office POLARS BEARS will be an animal of the past, right along with dinosaurs!

Wake up America. Are we going to relpace a group of liars, with another group of liars. This is getting more and more interesting. When you vote "D Student" into to office this is what you get. The GOP is good at repeating lies until something sticks. They could cares less if it is true or not, because they have no issues to run on. The News Media will help the GOP because it boost their ratings. How sick this sounds, but it is true. Fair and Balance for who. Wake up America this is going around the World, other counties are watching us. A lie does'nt care who tells it, as long as it is believed. Palin is digging a bigger hole for the GOP to climb out of. No shame in her game is it.

As falsehoods go, these are small change, but they do reflect a lamentable tendency by the McCain campaign to misrepresent Governor Palin's achievements and experience. Enough already. Change we can believe in? I don't think so.

You know in the past when people were caught padding their resume' they got fired and were laughed out of town (Brownie). I guess this year the republicans think that padding your resume' is the norm.

What's next, she ducked sniper fire from Russia in the northern Alaska territory.

Wasn't this a mortal sin when Hillary said she made a corkscrew landing in Bosnia to avoid Anti-aircraft fire? All Republican Hillary Haters should now drop their support for Palin, the exagerator. Like they won't be the hippocrites they are on this & every faux pas by "their people": the patriotic & blessed.

The lies just continue to pile up. It's apparent that the McCain campaign is grasping at straws in order to justify the selection of an obviously inexperienced candidate.

Lying and distortions again and again. McCain/Palin have no honor.

Now this has me worried. McCain wants to raise my taxes AND take away my health insurance. Per FactCheck.org:

    • Under the McCain heath care plan, workers would be taxed on the value of any employer-paid health benefits, partially offsetting the $5,000 credit for those now covered by such plans.

    • Experts say a tax credit plan like this would likely cause companies to reduce or eliminate health benefits for their employees.

McCain = high taxes, no health insurance

America, can you afford 4 more years of this???

IT IS EASY TO SEE WHY IT'S A MAN'S WORLD. THE NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO ARE VOTING FOR MCCAIN JUST BECAUSE HE PUT AN INEXPERIENCED, UNQUALIFIED WOMAN ON THE TICKET IS PATHETIC.

MCCAIN, WHO WAS ONCE A ROLE MODEL, HERO, MAN OF CHARACTER AND INTEGRITY IS NOTHING MORE THAN A SELF-ABSORBED, ARROGANT, POWERHUNGRY ELITIST WHO WILL LIE, CHEAT, DISGRACE HIMSELF AND HIS COUNTRY TO WIN.

WE ARE FAST BECOMING A NATION OF FOOLS AND THAT IS WHAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE ALWAYS COUNTED ON, ESPECIALLY WITH WOMEN VOTERS.

    WAKE UP!

She had been to a few countries. Why lie and claim that she had been to more ?
They are getting caught in so many lies that we need to ask if they are lying about where they really intend to lead to lead this country if elected.
