Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier: McCain defends Palin's experience level

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

So which is it? First they said she did visit with troops, now it they say she did not meet with them. Do they do test polls to see which will work better, and just ignore the truth. Please anyone explain to me how this PERSON deserves anything more then a tour of the White House? If this PERSON gets to be the Vice President it will show the overall ignorance of this country, and how WHITES are more scared of a persons race then they are their overall intelligence.

So the spokesperson for Palin states that she has been to Mexico and Canada. So since I have also been to Japan and Korea would that make me more able to be Vice President then Palin?

The more and more people learn about Palin and McCain the less and less they will like them. Their whole campaign is based on lies and distortions.

What is funny is that this is the woman, and this is the campaign, that the so-called "Religious" Right is rallying around...

When are we going to wake up, this women is a actress, with the intent of trying to fool the American people, she does not have the experience needed to run this country. We are not talking about being a mayor of 6000 people, we are talking about the US of American. People stop being stupid, this country is in trouble, and we must make adult decisions here. Not emotional ones.

I'm not one bit surprised. You know on Christmas and this great big gorgeously wrapped gift arrives with your name on it. You're anxious to open it up and inside is the last you would ever want in your life. That's Palin, she wears a skirt , and can read a speech well. Women are falling all over themselves to see PALIN. Why because they relate to her on some level. A soccer mom, a mom of 5 kids, and a woman balancing work and home. However, what I see is someone who's every word somehow has ended up being a lie. Every other word has been written for her and when utter, sounds extremely hollow and insincere. So when people are willing she say she's just like me, I hope they're willing to claim it all. A proven LIER, deceiveful, conniver. Then when McCain-Palin get into office, you'll be able to continuing living life as it is presently. See right now we're all unhappy. Expect everything to stay the same or get worse. Why?, McCain and Palin are showing you their intent right now. If you're sucked into believe the lies now, what would make you believe their plan for the future.

  12. Enough!

The McCain and Palin campaign continues to lie because they can get away with it. The McCain campaign thinks that Americans are gullible, let's face it, down right stupid to the point that they even claimed that Americans love Palin and really don't care about the lies and her inexperience. This is alarming, Americans would vote these two into office because they lilke Palin?? She's nothing more than a manipulating liar who should be no where near the whitehouse. God help America!

What a joke.....McCain and crew should be ashamed and vilified by the conservative US press, which destroyed Hialry's chances of winning the primary.

  15. Disgusted

I am disgusted by John McCain and his campaign is willing to sell out America to win an election. They have lied about everything. As a retired military member I respected him until about 2002 when he decided he wanted to be president and would say or do anything to ger elected. Sarah Palin's record is all smoke and mirrors. All these so called conservatives that talk about abortions and protecting life.Life is life whether it's at birth or the death penalty. How many innocent people have been executed? Most poor people don't get abortions just because. The have them mostly for economic reasons. These so called God fearing people, where are they on racicm and all the other injustices.Maybe if the playing field was leveled there wouldn't be abortions except for the really rich people(Republicans)that have their daughter get one if they get pregnant and they don't want to as they say ruin their childs life.Pro life should be the total life from birth till death that means good education, housing college and economic opportunity.

there is no daubt that Sarah Palin is not all she pretends to be. McCain is hell bent on winning this election and does not care how he accomplishes that – and that is sad – It is also sad that a lot of Americans still have a problem with the color of someones skin. We live in the 21st century for gods sake. Look closely at who will take care of us and who will pander to the rich. I am sure McCains friends want him in office so they can resume their lavish life styles. If he gets elcted with his sleezy adds, I will move to another country.

I logged on to CNN today to get some news on the state of Texas and it's citizens after the damage that IKE caused after directly hitting Houston and Gavalston and guess what? Sarah Palin in the news again. She lied about her travels. Is this anything new. This woman is nothing but a "LIER", but it's okay because she is energizing the Republican party and will reform Washington. After the last three days of Sarah Palin in the news how can any AMERICAN can consider voting for McCain and PAlin unless you are just too ignorant or stupid to know the difference.

The World is looking at us. 58% for Senator compared to 12% for McCain perfers Senator Obama for President. Please let not show the world how stupid we are by voting for McCain – Palin

    Obama / Biden – 2008

Just because Governor Palin has not visited several countries does not mean she is not qualified to serve as vice-president . . . just a heartbeat away from the presidency. HOWEVER, that she has a tendency to exagerate her positions and consistently seems to be less than honest about her record, she is NOT qualified.

As a Republican I love the thought of Sarah, but after watching her I know she's not ready to lead. I wish my party would seriously think about running a female who's more polished and experienced.

Unfortunately, in November we as Americans will have to get serious and vote for the two people who will take us in a different direction than George Bush.

Let me tell you all something, you better hope this race is not close or does not come down to one state hanky panky like in 2000 because this time I predict there will riots in the streets and in the RICH NEIGHBORHOODS all across america! It will make the 1960's look like a schoolyard fight.

I find it interesting that CNN does not name this Alaska spokeswoman. Perhaps she does not exist? Perhaps no one made this claim, and it's just another opportunity for the Obama News Network to do its thing. Well, CNN? Who is she? And why is the McCain campaign held responsible for everything that every "spokesperson" says? Why don't you hold your beloved Obama responsible, even for the things he himself says?
