Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Palin the more I get to know little of you the more secrets and lies are exposed. I can see why the McCain camp is so bent on limiting your press interviews. This is ridiculous here we have a candidate running for 2nd in command possibly President and its very few details we as the public know, and when it is to be revealed it turns into a lie. I'm sorry as a first time voter and some many I know can allow to vote for the McCain – Palin ticket. She should not worry about Obama regretting to have chose Hillary it appears McCain needs to regret in picking you as his running mate. From the Obama supporters in FL our hearts and prayers go out to our fellow Americans affected by the terrible Hurricane Ike. God Bless!

    What? Really, WoW!
I wander how many women want people to think they are like this?
She really dosen't represent women that I know.
I know strong women, but they don't allow men to tell the world who they are. They do it themselves.

I just don't understand my fellow americans.... After the last eight years of this president with John Mccain right beside him (so he could aspire to be president) and the situation of the economy, the wars, the corruption, they are going to vote for this man.... A republican through and through?

What's going on...for years we hear how we want a campaign on the issues but the negative campaigning that the Mccain lobbyist is leading is actually working? Lies trumps everything else?

And now women are falling for this Palin Crap? I can honestly say that if the republican's win again because of people that do not want to get informed and that they would rather vote against their own self interests and the interests of the country like they did with Bush...then you know what, when the economy is even worse.. when we are in more wars because of a warmongorer like Mccain, don't complain... you had the chance and you blew it.....

Some beacon of hope this country is.... Lie, smear, destroy and you too can be president of this country.... perhaps it's real, our choices reflect what this country is really about.... and it seams to be about being ignorant fools who let themselves be conned not once, twice but three times...

Man!!!..................Everytime Palin opens her mouth it turns out to be a lie, She is a lier and no way should be in power of this country. Americans want to trust their leaders, that's all McCain talks about but his running mate Palin is nothing but a liar. I DO NOT TRUST McCAIN NOR PALIN to run this country, they are lying already to the people, no honor, nor respect. they think we all are fools.

Has she ever told the truth about anything?? Anything at all?

Seriously -- Other than the "My name is Sarah Palin," and given the avalanche of lies she's been caught in, I can't even be 100% sure that was true!

I cant believe people are still buying Palin!? this propped-up political puppet is having her history and words written and read to her so she can go out AHEAD of Mccain, like a mascot, diverting the real issues that the Repubs still have not addressed. The Dems may be throwing "wish-bones" to the public (as politicians always do) but the Mccain -Palin duo are just throwing out exaggerations , lies and slander. Im sorry Hilary did not get the nomination but LADIES PLEASE!!! is this reallly who you want to RUN the country??? Run it into the ground is more like it....

Wow... doesn't it ever occur to Sarah Palin that she should provide correct information about her resume, governing and travel? She allows her to campaign create speeches, commercials, and talking points that contain misleading information and/or outright lies. Does she really think the American people will not find out the truth?! She could at least fill in her own side about the problems with some of her stories before they then repeat those ridiculous stories that she knows are blatantly false. This is beyond silly season! It's like "Where's Waldo" with her, only we are always looking for the truth!

I still can't believe what she said to the soldiers as to why they are going to Iraq, including her own son.She is so impressed with her own importance. Ignorance is bliss unless you are the one in charge, then ignorance is dangerous.

The lies and payoffs are mounting; yet the GOP believes itself to be above scrutiny of the press and the public. If the GOP has its way, it would take away the freedom of the press or at very least, control it. As a registered Republican, I am totally disgusted with the corruption my party embraces by twisting facts and flat out lying. We used to be a party that cared about moral values and holding onto American traditions. It is evident that big corporations rule the party. To go against the grain is to fall out of grace. The Democrats have a tactical advantage they do not know how to expand upon and most likely will fail. This will prove that the GOP is better suited to lead; but at what cost to every honest working person?

Hmmm...why would Palin lie about having visited our troops in Iraq? Obviously, she wanted to inflate her desperately thin resume. Trying to capitalize off of the hard and brave work of our troops is absolutely unforgivable! Palin's lie just lost McCain my Republican vote.

I have commented on numerous article on many occasions, and have never seen one of mine ever published.

But after reading this I feel compelled to try once more.

It seems that very little about Sarah Palin and her reported experience(s) are accurate and not obscenely inflated. I am amazed at how quickly American's wanted a "darling" and have been simply flabbergasted by how easily they've been "pulled in." Seems like we've so desperately wanted someone we could rally around and feel good about that we are willing to believe and accept anything/everything we're being told.

I, for one, am not buying.

Ms Palin seems like a very nice person and a charming individual. I would readily welcome her as my neighbor – but I am not quite ready to make her the "President of the United States."

The tip of the iceberg is showing. For interesting reading, check out today's New York Times story on the way Ms. Palin runs Alaska – she out-Bushes Bush.

John McCain didn't pick someone who can be president; he picked someone who could help him win an election. That's why, everywhere he goes, Sarah Palin or Mrs. McCain is with him. On his own, he just can't get it done.

He wants to win to win. It appears Mr. Obama wants to win in order to do something.

It seems that the last truthful and decent person to represent the republican party was Gerald Ford. The republicans genuflect to the memory of Reagan, but what about the Iran/Contra scandal, the illegal alien amnesty program, firing the air traffic controllers and the tremendous ballooning of the budget deficet? Go ahead, google and graph the budget deficet from 1950 on and see who spent money that we didn't have. By the stated standards of the republican party, Nixon, Bush the elder and Bush the stupid are tremendous failures. McCain is more of the same and wants this presidency so badly that he has forsaken his honor and ethics with a win at any cost strategy. Whatever kind of man McCain once was he stopped being that man long ago.
