Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.
A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

I have no idea why anyone thinks that Gov. Palin would be a good VP or the president. It seems to me that she is just cramming for a tough exam. She is beiing pimped by John McCLain. They are not even on the same page with the simple stuff. This man goes to the whitest [literally and figuratively] state in the free world and finds a female that most people have not even heard of and says " surprise, look who I found'. What a Joke!!!! I really understand how all this works now. The Republicans play on peoples fears, ignorance and emotions to win elections and when they do win, nothing ever happens.

The Republican Machine, as it is called, has manage to accomplish one thing, corruption of the American Electorate. More than at any time in the past, beginning with George W Bush, Karl Rove and the machine has set about corrupting the very processes we use to elect nominees to the highest office in the country. That is how we ended up with George W Bush, the most incompetant guy to ever hold the office of president. The mess we find this country, on every front, can be traced back to the swindling of the american public by Karl Rove and the Republic Machine. Now John McCain is uing the Machine to get elected and if he succeeds, I fear the country as we know it will cease to exist.

Of course she didn't, BECAUSE EVERYTHING THE REPUBLICANS HAVE TOLD YOU IS A LIE. JUST LIKE GEORGE BUSH LIED TO US ABOUT IRAQ. LIED TO US ABOUT THE STATE OF OUR NATION. THE REPUBLICANS DO NOT WANT TO LOSE POWER. THEY FEAR FOR THEIR FREEDOM AS MOST OF THEM BELONG IN PRISON OR SHOT FOR TREASON. PLEASE LIE SOME MORE.

AND YOU IDIOTS THAT BELIEVE THE LIES... YOU WILL GET WHAT YOU DESERVE. MORE LIES AND NO HELP. PULL YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE DIRT AND THINK.

IF CHANGE DOESN'T COME FROM THIS ELECTION. IT WILL COME FROM THE REVOLUTION THAT WILL FOLLOW.

Simply put, most of Palin's quaification claims are wildly exagerated or outright fabrications. What does this say about McCain's judgement? And why is the media letting get away with her lies?

I don't care whether she's been in Iraq or not, but I'm insulted by how loosely they've been playing with the truth to try to exaggerate her qualifications. This story goes right along with counting Alaska's proximity to Russia as foreign policy experience.

And yet the polls would seem to indicate people (especially "white women") are in love with her no matter how much BS the McCain campaign feeds us about her. Maybe, all along, Hillary was right in her charges of sexism and just wrong about who was benefiting the most from it.

If Obama had lied as much as Mc Cainand Palin, the media would make a BIG DEAL out of it. Scarborough, Pat Buchanann and that "crowd"
would CRUCIFY Obama. Now, they will try to think of some SPIN to justify the Mc Cain LIES !!!!!!!!!

Just call Mc Cain "MC SLEAZY !!!!!!

To many this may seem picky, but it is the tip of an extremely large iceberg of lies and deception from the GOP political machine. The GOP will and has done anything they deem necessary to trick the American public into voting to keep a GOP puppet in the White House.

So......lets see – Obama puts out an ad that claims McCain is not for equal pay for equal work.....well, let me tell you = Obama pays .80 on the dollar to his female staff at the US Senate vs the male staff doing the same job.

McCain pays his female staff 1.10 vs. the male's 1.00 on his US Senate staff. So Obama is once again the twister – and the liar about the record of John McCain.

So who is doing the sleezy now??? Obama – why??? because he is behind !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How much longer will the McCain-Palin supporters tolerate the lies? Are they that thirsty to retain the whitehouse that they are willing to put their livelihoods on the line? Sure, vote for the repub ticket. For those of you at the lower end of the economic spectrum I sure hope you don't mind losing everything that you've worked your entire lives for if you haven't already under the current administration.

I feel like the republican Rove policies are alot like McCarthyism. I hope after McCain's deception and lies were revealed on 'The View' by Barbara Walters and the shows other host's that the supposed "real press" will do their jobs and expose McCains lies. Maybe McCain should have someone show him the internet so he can see that all the lies he tells can be checked on it? I used to think he was an Okay guy, but I think he is much worse than Bush!
