Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier: McCain defends Palin's experience level

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Why is this an issue? Did Obama travel to many countries before he became a presidential nominee? I find so many negative things against Sarah Palin and I think it is because she is a woman. Sick American politics.

That's good news for McCain. Sarah is just a footstep away from being ready to serve as his go to person on Iraq. As soon as she gets the nerve to approach the border entry point and puts her painted toenails over the line, then McCain will have his Iraq policy expert !!

And she's already up to speed on Ireland having actually spent time on their soil at the airport, while the plane was refueling. Any problems in Ireland Sarah will let us all know she is ready to handle it, heck I bet she won't even blink.

It may be easier to stop trying to catalog the lies and just list if they ever say anything truthful.

Lies, lies, lies I tell you. How many do we have to hear before we say ENOUGH? How can you trust someone who lies to you every single time they speak? She has told nothing but a string of lies every single day that she has been campaigning – EVERY SINGLE DAY. Now I expect to hear things exxagerated a little by politicians every now and then, but lies every day? And she's a Christian? You do know you have to do more that oppose abortions to really be a good evangelical. Is there one speech that she's given that isn't laced with lies? And McCain constantly defends and supports her? What kind of maverick is that?

It is incredible to see how McCain and company are stretching the true, exaggerating and flat out lying about the issues and Palin's background!

What ever happened to honesty and integrity of a military Officer? McCain is proving that he is nothing more than supporter of lies and falsehoods in an effort to dupe the American public. He must really think the American public are fools, idiots and willing to be lied to like stupid sheep.

    He is wrong!

I'd like to commend the press for continuing to thoroughly vet Governor Palin, something the McCain campaign obviously didn't do. Thanks!

Palin is probably the least qualified V. P. pick in U. S. American history. She is a gimmick for the GOP campaign and is a symbol of how poorly McCain would serve us as President. We don't care if Palin went to Iraq, or not. Why does CNN bother to publish this (unless I missed another lie)? What we do care about is the sad state of our country and that the GOP is counting on the "stupid" mainstream voters on supporting them for more of the same deceitful politics that have insulted the integrity of our country for many years world wide. It's really sad that the McCain Camp has made so many direct lies, especially recently. We shouldn't be too concerned about the "corruption" of governments in places like Africa, when we've got a bigger case of it at home. Palin as Prez? There are millions of better choices. What a sick country . My God, what a joke.

Ha, h, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, lol!

Go McCain/Palin! Just keep doing what you're doing. Does Sen. McCain know anything other than how to implode? He's jus truckin' along and then, boom, he's gotta screw up.

As much as the republican base may hate us liberal whacko's, The McCain/Palin team are forcing those folks to take a hard look at Obama/Biden. At least these guys can run a relatively smooth campain with some discipline and the attempt of integrity (let's call it a concerted effort, undermined by others).

McCain absolutely picked the perfect running mate for himself. Both are self-cleaning, white-boards ready to wipe the slate at every whim of the "polled public." (Has anyone reading this ever been polled? I haven't found anyone this election cycle.)

Anyone know the response from the McCain/Palin camp re: the interview on "The View?" I'm sure he cried foul, taking his marbles and going to play elsewhere. OMG what fun this all is.

    Palin, refueling America!

And BTW, she has *seen* Iraq from Quwait, like you can see Russia from Alaska.

  15. No McCain, No Way,No Palin!

So she saw a few airports and visited military facilities overseas. Big deal! Did she meet any people from the countries she visited? She claims that she has foreign policy experience because Alaska is a neighbor to Russia. That is preposterous and completely scary. As an American who has spent the last 10 years living in the Middle East, these countries have rich cultures. She might as well have gone on the internet and watched a virtual travel video for all she probably got out of her travels.

That's pretty brave of her. They are exactly who we need in office I bet the same people who voted Bush-Cheney into office will vote for McCain-Palin. Good luck to us all because this country will be in a world of hurt if they win.

I think the little trip Palin took last July, sounds more like she wanted a way (again) for tax payers to pay for her vacation, rather than anything else. Check the records and see how many of her hotel excursions (that included extra rooms for family members) were billed to her state. Do you really think in a VP position she will change? It will only make matters worse with a higher level of corruption.

My, my, she lied. What a shocker! She fits in quite nicely with the Republican ticket – lie, attack, lie, attack, false outrage over nothing.
