Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Has anything about Palin actually been true? What a sham. The McCain campaign is creating a Rorschach candidate for Middle America that exists entirely in mythology. They could have chosen a random registered Republican out of a hat and created the same stories. The worst thing is they can probably get away with this and with spreading vile lies in their ads and on the stump because anyone who tries to rebuff them belongs to the evil liberal media.

This woman is such a joke! McCain must have spent all of two minutes vetting this clown. All she did was back track in the Gibson interviews and she's getting caught in brand new lies every day! No wonder McCain waited almost two weeks before allowing Palin to answer even one question. No way Grampa John and Peggy Hill will ever get my vote.

You know I thought This woman who came on the platform at the convention with McCain was really a maverick, well I got really disappointed! I am a Hillary supporter who was going to vote the GOP ticket, but after all the STUFF that's coming out of the woodworks about Gov Palin, especially the investigations, earmarks and the way Sen McCain flat out lied on the View, the way Palin conducted herself on ABC with Mr Gibson, she is definitely no HILLARY! Anyone who have some common sense could see this woman is a FAKE! I was hoping she would be for us, but she is really for the PRESTIGE of VP and doing whatever it takes to shine. This VP has hurt me, and I refuse to give what is very important to me, which is my vote, to someone who lied about going to Iraq to visit the soldiers and if no other Democrat care about those men & women who gave their lives that we Americans might remain a free country, I will. Hillary and Obama have proven to be Authentic. I was listening to Hannity & Limbaugh and I feel real bad for allowing myself to be caught up in the deception of Operation Chaos. Sorry, I'm coming back home Democrats!!!!

Yet another "half-truth" from Mrs. Palin. Does the Republican Party have any ethics?

Bush campaigned with lies and deception and what we got was 8 years of continued lies, corruption and violation of the laws.

So what do all the McCain supporters think they will bet if McShame and Palin are elected? Do they think he will suddenly be a honest and upright in his actions?????

Bush lied in his campaign and then in 8 years. Logic holds that if McShame lies now he will do the same in office.

    Wake UP America!!!!

So what? Where is the story? Obama didn't travel until he could get all you breastfeeding media folks to follow. Question. Are you at CNN paid Obama staff members or are you volunteers?
You do know that you no longer have any credibility don't you. You definitely are no longer the "most trusted" of the networks. It sad what you have done to a legacy Ted Turner worked so hard to attain.

Is there no end to their lies? And people seem to be swallowing it hook, line and sinker. It shows how seriously the Republicans really care about their country...lies don't matter, just winning. I am an independent and am looking for intelligence in my president. This is so unbelievable that the American people are falling for this yet again. I don't understand, I really don't.

Okay let's be serious. If you can't even tell the truth about going to Iraq, how in the world can we expect you to tell the truth about anything! Yes, you and McCain are made for each other, but not for the White House. Note to Palin you don't have to tell White Lies to get into the White House!

In the words of Sam Cooke... A Change Is Coming, and that change is in the form of Barack Obama and Joe Biden!

Our greatest civic responsibility as citizens of the United States is to cast our votes wisely for those who will be tasked to lead and represent our country.

Listen to the candidates as they respond to the issues and determine if they have the maturity and wisdom to govern our nation. Theirs will be no small task, and we can ill afford the added repercussions of electing leaders who have a shallow or naive understanding of the issues and challenges that face our nation and the world.

We must think before casting our votes and place intelligence in the White House.

Ok CNN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING! In my view you are perpetuating a disaster. Palin, Palin Palin Palin. ENOUGH!

Seriously, I want to hear more about the issues. Where do the PRESIDENTIAL candidates stand on the ISSUES. But I guess your ratings are more important than informing the public on thing that really matter.

CNN...You went from good, to complacent, to rating happy, to nothing but a disgrace.
