Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier: McCain defends Palin's experience level

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

can any one tell me if they investagated, if mrs palan was on a policitical junket sponcered by lobbiest, or was this a miltary air craft, or comerical, becuase i never heard of any plane leaving germany for the states having to get re fueled in ireland , how long was she in ireland, it seems that about 1/3 of all the things she had claimed during the campain have been proven not to be true, showing video of her in iraq with the troops, then saying now , ah i did cross a border crossing into iraq but went right back does not make this right , mc cain complained that obama did not visit the troops in germany and made a very big issue of it now palan never visited the troops in iraq as her video showed, but im bothered about this going to ireland thing ,has it been investigated, this story about getting fuel , to me is so far fetched, how long was she there , on what kind of air craft goes from germany to ireland fo fuel, i find that very hard to belive ,95% of all air traffic from germany is non stop to the states, it sounds like a lobbiest junket to me. the part about going to ireland to germany can not possibbly be true.if investagated will proubly be proven a non truth item ,after knowing her daughter was 5 mths pregnant, she never once told the party during that 5 months about this problem, nor did mc cain interviw staff catch it , like iraq you find out before the truth comes out that you have been misslead or even lied to. if you check this trip you will find out there was more to it than being said. ken

So when Obama hadn't been in two years mccain bashed him continuously for it yet his running mate has NEVER been. What hypocrisy! Tired of the lies, the spins, the deceit, tired of the rethuglicans.

If the Boston Globe hadn't exposed this lie, McCain and Palin would have continued to mislead the American people about this issue!
Over the past two weeks it has been the media, not McCain, telling us the truth about Palin's record as governor. She asked for and took earmarks! She was for the bridge! She didn't sell the plane on ebay or for a profit! She hired a Washington lobbyist! Obama wasn't talking about Palin when he made the pig remark! McCain and Palin are running the most deceitful campaign I can remember, which makes me wonder how deceitful a McCain/Palin presidency would be.
Hopefully, we will never find out. We've been lied to enough!

So's the word I'm looking for? Liiieeee.... something. OH yeah, LIED! Again and again. I once saw Mexico from San Diego, does that mean I've been there too? Plus there was all that time I spent in Houston, so I know all about how Ike affected that city, after all, I had a layover flight there once.

Who are the people who are buying this Republican bull?!? Are people really that stupid!?!? Well, someone elected Bush to office twice.

Man, the Obama campaign is over-blowing, distorting, and downright misleading people about McCain, Palin, and their campaign. Actually they are twisting facts into lies to support their panic mode. This sounds as if they think they have a "Gotcha" but they don't. Palin did not say she visited the troops in Iraq. She didn't say she visited Ireland either. This is all much ado about nothing and Obama is making himself and his campaign appear weak, insecure, and, actually, frantic.

Does Sarah Palin tell the truth about ANYTHING? Other than the fact that she has four kids???

Every claim she made in her RNC speech has been proven to be either an outright lie, or something terribly misleading.

Christians values? Commandment 6: Tell the TRUTH, sly Sarah.

It seems Ms Palin struggled mightily to actually complete a basic college education-5 transfers, 4 colleges, 6 years. I wonder if she can reliably find Iraq or Afghanistan on a map without coaching. Could she name the lower 48 states and locate them on a map? Does she have a clue that our country is a rich multiracial mix and that most people live in urban areas and have no experience with shooting wolves from a helicopter?
She is promoting a myth of a fictitious past that most Americans at this point never experienced.
The good ol' days are gone. This country as the McCain/Palin ticket would have us believe doesn't exist. It's a new world, with very new problems and issues. McCain/Palin does not get it.

Talk about arrogance. Obama actually believes that "in his own words" As a Mayor, you fill pot holes, trim trees and make sure the garbage is taken away. What an insult to all the dedicated people that put their names up for election and work for very little renumeration.. Manage budgets, recruit industry, work to better every aspect of the peoples lives who they represent.

There goes Palin`s foreign policy experience out the window, sooner or later the truth will always reveal itself.

She is all smoke, and mirrors.

All i keep seeing is Sarah talking about Obama, but never about the issues that matters of us Americans.

  16. Why McCain

White woman are not the only important group in American. There are other ethnic groups and men. When are the American people going to stop putting white women on a pedestal?

    Everyone is important.

McCain and Palin don't seem to care about all of America, just a small fraction.

The president of such a diverse country should care about all Americans not just white people.

Of course she didn't. Now will they also admit all the other lies the RNC and she herself has touted over the past two weeks? Since the lies are not selling, maybe they could try the truth, but then we'd all know how really unqualified the woman is for the job she seeks. I just hope the Republican voters are paying attention-this team is a disaster for the US.

I like McCain. I really do. I think he would be better suited to handle foreign affairs. (Even with a foreign affairs whiz like Joe Biden now on Obama's ticket... Biden-Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee) But I can't vote for McCain now that he has chosen some as inexperienced as Sarah Palin.

I guess I'm still torn. But I'm finding myself leaning to the Democratic ticket now.

Also fwiw, I think it will be funny to see Biden mop the floor with Palin in the VP debates. Which now pique my interest in a lot of ways more than the Presidential debates do. (Those I think Obama and McCain will likely "split.")

If anyone here wants to see this woman open her trap for a good laugh, watch her interview on ABC....

In which she basically said NATO should accept Georgia into the organization, and that any further conflict from Russia would lead to conflict with the US.... oh but we should enter to "Cold war mentalites."

Ugg.... Her avoiding the Sunday talk shows the first week she was chosen was a good idea by the McCain camp. They need her to read her speaches that are written for her, sit around and look pretty.....and NOT TALK.

    Kev from Providence.
