Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Hasn't she always maintained that she visited Kuwait? So what's the issue here?

"Visiting Ireland" was actually a fueling stop? I wonder what those other international "visits" were really for? Looks like the lipstick is wearing thin.

Good Grief! How can anyone continue to support the Republican fools running our country into the ground? Even religious fanatics must have to accept reality at some point, don't they?

She claims 'visiting Ireland' when her plane was refueling in that country. Why did she not claim all the countries she has seen on the discovery channel (or does she maybe not watch documentaries without oil and moose?)

  8. Where's the truth?

More lies. It's hard to believe that God would be on the side of those who lie consistently.

McCain only asked the mooses in Alaska whether Palin is worthy to be Vice President and possibly President. We now know that his vetting team never vetted Palin thoroughly. America, this election is too important to our children and the future of this country to allow lies and ignorance to guide us in the next four years.

I truly would like to know why the media is so bent on destroying Palin and giving Obama coverage as if he were the second coming!

The media needs to be a bit more impartial and start going after Obama for his lack of any experience to run this country. At least both McCain and Palin have had leadership jobs.

Obama has not even run a small business, local or state government. Why isn't the media going after Obama??

Why the witch hunt about Palin?

It appears the McCain people have overstated many Palin accomplishments.

She stated she was responsible for ending the bridge to nowhere. That statement was incorrect because now we know she supported it and that Congress (not Palin) killed it (and she kept the money for that bridge and built a road to nowhere).

McCain himself stated Palin sold the plane on ebay for a profit, which was incorrect. It was actually sold to a private buyer through a broker at a loss to the Alaska people. She then began charging the state for flights for her and her family members.

She has stated she is against earmarks, yet hired a lobbyist to get millions in earmarks for Alaska now her trip to Iraq is untrue.

She is just like any other politician. Says what she has to to get votes, even if what she says is a lie. I realized this when she continued to avoid questions in her Gibson interview.

He had to ask her point blank three times what she would do for the economy. He asked about her foreign affairs experience and she started talking about energy.

    Back to Obama for me.

New button: Palin – just another politician.

Why are they lying? Haven't we had enough yet? Cindy McCain for something as simple as recipes? How stupid is that?? John McCain for the "elite-est " comments, among other things, and now Palin with all sorts of tales? If they want people to believe their promises, plans, etc.- PLEASE tell the truth NOW for pete's sake. Is this the pair we want to lead our country? Is Palin anywhere capable of helping to lead, or possibly leading, our country?

McCain can claim more time in Washington but that does not equate to more experience or better leadership qualities. It obviously has not done our country any good either with him in Washington.

Ya gottal love the logic of Gov. Palin/Sen. McCains team... Sarah has little if any foreign policy knowledge, BUT... she can see Russia from her kitchen window and that somehow, makes her like middle-America Joe, and capable of leading our nation in foriegn affairs. I can't wait to hear her stance on immigration and how that might be spun.

Oh this is so much fun! We citizens had better take the time to laugh and enjoy this "silly season" but also never forget the depths our nation had to plunge before "we the people" awoke.

I pray that Senators Obama and Biden remain true to thier core character and beliefs and that they actually will try to put people ahead of interests that are corporate and not citizen focused.

    Obama/Biden 08!

p.s. I just gave another $5 to the campaign. I only make $1000/mo. My point is... almost anyone can figure a way to contribute something, even a token amount, to the campaign. Please try... for our great country and for those of us living in this country. Help yourself... contribute in some way.

Will it ever end. Is there ever going to be just one story, where sarah palin does not stretch the truth, make misleading claims, or just out and out lie! Has she no shame? I really hope that these are not the morals that she is teaching to her children.

Not Surprising! Falsehoods, Lies and Misleading Information is all you ever get from McCain/Palin. I went to my first protest today against the pro-choice stand that McCain/Palin stand on here in Anchorage Alaska and because this event was so publicized I expected more McCain/Palin supporters but that was not the case. 100's to each 10 supporters for McCain. This race is not over in Alaska!
