Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

We clearly see a pattern of deception on the part of the Mcsame campaign. They have consistently lied and distorted facts to pad her record. It's not going to work. Just the other day, I read that this campaign inflated the number of people that attended their rally in Virginia by as much as three. Who are they fooling?
This makes me to wonder if she has gone to canada, Mexico and Ireland as she says. There is so much discrepancy in their stories.
I'm an independent and I am leaning towards OB.

I also wish the media wouldn't trivialize the McCain campaigns' dishonesty.

I don't think it really matters. She has effectively given the bigots and ignoramuses of the right-wing someone to cheer and vote for.

If substance (i.e. talent, education, achievement, truthfullness) or judgement (i.e. against Iraq war) mattered the Repubs would be dead in the water.

In fact all that matters is the GOP have a new pet, and she's shiny and white...

How can the evangelicals keep defending her to be a conservative christian when she keeps on lying to move forward. She does not think for a second when asked to respond on very critical issues, she just utters which is very dangerous. We know that family has its ups and downs. But it struck me to see her choose campaign over her family which needed her most. she is greedy for power and attention she wants all eyes on her, she does not care how her toddler is handling it. She was already a governor could she not have been satisfied with that office. Must she be a VP to get satisfaction of serving America?? She needs to slow down. And women she is lying to you about being a hockey mom, She has her family intact, has a well paying job, a supportive husband and you are struggling to survive on your own without help from the fathers of your kids. Do not be fooled, do not be used, she does not have your interests at heart.

    Good foreign policy list.

Layover in Ireland (I guess I could be mayor of Atlanta if layovers counted as experience)

Went to vacation in Mexico and Canada once (Ive been on vacation in more countries and more times, so I guess I have foreign policy experience too)

Add to that she can see Russia (but has never spoken with them) from Alaska and she sure is ready on day 1.

Trigger-happy Palin is miscalculating. She thinks that her deploying her son to Iraq will give her the image of a tough fighter who supports the Iraq war.

Americans are tired of wars, they want to rebuild their sattered economy and be able to do business with the world again in a respectful way.
The Iraq war is not on top of the issues voters care about – the economy is.

Hey! I've visited Mexican restaurants and I've been within seeing distance of Canada! Would these also count as foreign travel experiences to the McCain camp?

John McCcain has lost all respect that people had for him in 2000. His straight talk express has fallen off the track. His constant lying on the campaign trail about Barack Obama will come back to bite him. His campaign is run by ex-Bush staffers and Karl Rove, the head sleaze bag from the Bush Administration. People see through his lies and distortions from the truth. McCain's selection of Palin for VP is purely political. She knows nothing about national security or the world in general. McCain's campaign will not allow her to answer questions from the press for good reason; her answers would show that she doesn"t know anything about foreign policy, national security, domestic policy , the war in Iraq or even what role a VP plays as part of the executive branch. She has lied about "The Bridge to Nowwhere", having supported it before it became a national disgrace wherein she decided to not support it. She said she is against "Earmarks", but even hired lobyists to get earmarks for not only her town but also for her state. She used her position as Governer to fire Alaska's top cop because he would not fire her ex-brother-in- law as she and the rest of her family wanted. To make her a VP candidate is the worst move of any Presidential candidate. She is not prepared to be president especially to take the place of McCain who has one foot in the grave and one foot on a banana peel.

Geeze, every time I turn around there seems to be yet another report about something new that Palin has misrepresented and she's been on the national scene all of what...two weeks? What a disgrace. And THIS is who the Christian Right support and hold up as their poster child? Unbelievable! Then when you consider all the lies about Obama in McCain's campaign ads, the same McCain who says he prays every day. Has he not heard, "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour"??

Palin may not have heard about the "Bush doctrine" but she's seems to be a follower of the "Pinocchio Doctrine"! McCain too, in my opinion.

I think the nation is waiting to see if Sarah Palin has left her ego behind and started to realize she's in way over her head running as VP. This will collapse and it's not going to be pretty.

Oh my goodness.. The truth will set us free. Obama does not have to question her false statements and fabrications. She is a liar and the hot air is starting to come out of her balloon. Broken and deflated hot air balloons are hazardous to our health. Go back to Alaska Todd and Sarah, you will never reside in Washington. Go Obama. People first, Let the truth be told....

  17. Sarah....and my last name isn't Palin

This nightmare that is Sarah Palin has got to stop. This is crazy! She's interviewing for the 2nd highest job in the world, and she is failing badly. She is not remotely qualified. Not by a long shot. McCain is a cynical old man, and made a terribly disappointing choice for VP.

Can somebody tell me why Governor Palin continues to lie about everything from going to Iraq, to bridge to Nowhere, to earmarks etc. Come on you media people, it is time to stop her from using your program to perpetuate lies to the infinite, this is wrong, and an abomination for that matter.

  23. Really?

I mean the lie about her not going to Iraq doesn't surprise me at all, but outside of North America for the first time, are you serious? That's absolutely pathetic, we need someone who is diplomatic, respected, and seasoned in world affairs and relations. Not her!
