Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Geez, it's just one lie after another; doesn't anyone here get that this ticket is a disaster waiting to happen for another four years. I'm sick of this already - vote Obama/Biden. Bring hope back to our country rather than the acceptance of mediocrity that has become so pervasive in this country over the last 8 years.

Sarah Palin is scary! If she lies so much, as the article indicates, why would anyone, Republican or Democrat, consider voting this ticket????

The media need to hold John McCain responsible for all this mess, and lies coming out from Sarah Palin's mouth.

If we have to teach our kids not to lie, how can a Governor continue to lie openly while our children watch her on the Television.

Wake Up America! Not only is the Iraq trip false, her trip to Mexico was on a vacation! A view of Russia across the Bering Strait gives her "insight" into Russian policy? That means when I put a band aid on my kids' elbow that makes me an orthopedic surgeon! "It's God's Will" is a cop out! That means not only whatever goes right, it's God's Will, and what ever doesn't go their way is God's Will also? Whatever happened to God's gift to man-free will? The free will to make the decisions and choices that are the "wills" that actually determine what we do on this planet? And this foreign policy expert is ready to go to war with Russia and or Iran at the drop of a hat? Once this planet is resting in a cloud of nuclear dust, will this same expert still claim it's "God's Will" just to try to prove her point? Oh, and as a veteran, I would like to thank her for painting a proverbial target on her son's chest, and those men and women serving next to him. Idiot!

Bravo to Obama spokesman Bill Burton for saying "We will take no lectures from John McCain, who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history and that he is running a campaign not worthy of the office he is seeking." McCain/Palin distortions of the truth as well as bald faced lies show that they will do anything to win the election. I just hope the majority of Americans will see that McCain can't focus on issues because he would certainly lose if citizens took the time to really read about and understand McCain/Palin idealogy. This election is bigger than abortion and gun control. It is about the survival of our democracy and our standing in the world.

What has the Republican party NOT lied about – WMDs, Iraq behind 9/11, "Mission Accomplished", Iraqi oil to pay for the war (not only has it not, but now that the Chinese got the bid, it never will), and Palin-please, how Insulting! They only picked her to pander to women, and I for one have not forgotten how unsupportive they as a party have been to women over the years. (Go back and read Phylis Shafley's speeches about working women!) It's taken them over 20 years to notice one, and what an insult to all the qualified women in the Republican Party (apparently too old for McCain who likes them young. Ladies, let's not forget how he left his marriage for Cindy, 18 years his junior and then has left Cindy Alone in AZ for 26 yrs. while he's in DC. Some husband).
For one who believes in abstinence, Palin should practice what she preaches (anyone notice how she got married the last day of Aug. and gave birth 8 months later! Premature?) She Never sold the plane on ebay, it was sold at a Loss to an insider. She wanted the Bridge to Nowhere until Congress balked, but Kept the money. Welcomes an investigation into Trooper gate, but wants to squash the subpeona. Admonished by the judge for being "abusive", Doesn't like earmarks, but hires a lobbiest to get them and Alaska has the Highest earmarks per capita! Enough.

Fellow Americans, we have Major issues to face, and yes, the issues are Boring. Most of us do not want to have to come home after a long day to deal with our own issues, let alone the country's complex issues. But I implore you, we cannot continue to Ignore the issues. If you are Not Interested, fine, but Don't vote for a party that has Bankrupted our country, sent our soldiers to war Without the proper equipment, Without enough equipment, and Without enough troops (against military advise) to fight a war in Iraq when we needed to be Afghanistan! This election is no joke and with the way things are going, don't think for one minute that you may be the next one out on the street without a job, a home, and healthcare!

I was shocked when I read the Sept 13th artical, "Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraq border". Why does this information not get mentioned during your prime time programs? I think this distortive information should be mentioned more than once. As an Independent I want to know what is truth and what is a lie or misrepresentation. It is your job to keep us informed. As a loyal CNN viewer, I feel betrayed when this information is not relayed to me. I want to make an informed decision when I vote this year.

Wow. Didn't she say in the Charlie Gibson interview that "THE TRIP TO IRAQ CHANGED MY LIFE!!!!!"

Now it turns out it was yet another lie?!?!

As Truman once said, "How many times do you have to get hit over the head before you figure out who's hitting you?"

If Americans can't see past the blatant Palin/McCain dishonesty, and elect them on November 4th, then this country deserves the lousy economy, unemployment, etc.

Wow! Another lie! Let's see if CNN posts this! Will you cover her lie as you did Hillary during the Bosnia sniper fire story? Palin's story is even worse. While Hillary actually went to Bosnia, Palin never went to Iraq. This is just another despicable to lie that the media will probably not hold them accountable for.
