Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

The lies, and half truths, just keep on coming. Let's give Sarah an education from our founding father's quotes, and she can translate it into "tongues" for the members of her congregation.

"A lighthouse is more useful than a church"
    Benjamin Franklin

"This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it"
    John Adams

For true Christians, this is an easy vote. Separate one's patriotism from one's religion, cast out the lies of the Republican party that has left the country's poor more hurting than ever, and the rich even richer than before, and do what's truly GOOD. One party represents the money changers in the temple, and the other party represents he who cast the money changers out of the temple. It's that simple.

The press spent months chastising Barack Obama for attending Holy Trinity. So I'm wondering why it is not making a big deal out of the fact that Palin attends a church that believes homosexuals can be converted to its idea of normalcy through prayer. Why is this issue off the table so to speak?

So what is the point of this article. Another attempt by CNN to smear Palin and push their favorite Obama? BTW CNN I have a revised name for Campbell Brown's new show "All Bias, All Bull." She has been in the tank for Obama since the beginning of the primaries. Go ahead CNN moderate this comment out of existence.

Palin never went to Ireland, either.
What has she said, then, that is not a lie?

  7. Moderate and Balanced

Is this really an important issue? She went to Kuwait and visited with the Alaskan troops as a Govenor of her state and showed her support. And how many times has Obama been to Iraq minus a few plane loads of media elite to lay the red carpet down and gush at every word?

Sarah Palin is a hero to the modern American working mom and the liberals need to get used to it. Obama stating that McCain is running the "Sleaziest campaign in history" is about as laughable as his allegience of naughty-mouthed campaign bloggers running their mouths off about Sarah Palin's family. Now THAT is sleazy.

Palin told ABC News that this was "the trip of a lifetime."

Actually, I would call it "the lie of a lifetime."

John McCain made possibly the most irresponsible choice for a Vice Presidential nominee in U.S. history. He took a big risk, made a big gamble with the future of our nation, and it's a bet he's lost.

I'm not gambling with our future. I'm voting for Obama-Biden.

Why is it that Sarah Palin has the highest approval rating of any governor in the United States? 80%.

You know, Bill Clinton got his experience as Governor of Arkansas. But he managed a state and a budget that was only 1/10th the size of Alaska's. Is Sarah being treated unfairly just because she is a woman?

I wonder what else Palin has embellished. As much as I am thrilled to see a woman as a VP pick, I cannot support a woman who is a "Good Ole Boy" wannabe!!

I forgot. Apparently McCain has been overstating the size of crowds coming to his rallies.

And–I just read about McCain's first wife, who he dumped, for Cindy, after she was maimed in a car accident. She mothered three children for him and waited for him to return from Vietnam. And he dumped her for a woman who was 20 years younger.

GoP. Party of family values, indeed.

Chrsitians everywhere ought to be dismayed by this crowd.

I do not believe a word McCain or Palin have to say. Once you lie you cannot be trusted. McCain has taken Obama's words and turned them around to suit his needs making them into lies.

Someone who said that he puts his Country before his political ambitions, would not LIE over and over. He would state where he stands on issues and be on with it! Obama has TRIED OVER AND OVER to stick with running a campaign over issues, BUT McCain won't stop the lies and now Obama MUST FIGHT BACK!

I am completely baffled by McCain. I guess the "Straight Talk Express" has jumped the track and he now only provides half truths, lies and fairy tales in hopes of riding Palin's skirt to the White House.

As an independant voter, I'm curious, why is that CNN and other networks refer to Sen.McCain, Sen.Biden and Gov.Palin by their official titles but when speaking of Sen.Barack Obama, he's only referred to as Barack? He's a Senator of the United States and should be given the respect he's earned. While I was taken by Sarah Palin like the rest of the country, I do believe ABC undoubtedly proved to me that she is not ready to be Commander and Chief of this country and the Democratic ticket has swayed my vote.

Come ooon, are we surprised! Anything the Republcian party can do to try to gain a vote! PALIN is a liar and not qualified to be VP. That is all there is to it. She opposes EARMARKS... yet she hired lobbyists to get earmarks years prior. She opposes any type of abortion including if a child is raped through incest or otherwise. What about the gray areas? Well in her eyes, there is none and she will remain the dictator! She has it well planned that she is going to be President WITHOUT any of her own campaignin or hardships to get to the top.

Don't CRY REPUBLICANS when the USA is doomed to the bitter end, especially when John McCain turns to a beauty queen to base his decisions on. It is obvious who is running that office and who is wearing the pants. It sure isn't McCain!

Never NEVER would I want her to be in office!
