Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.
A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

I am just astonished and amazed as to what this campaign is evolving into. Although I am a firm Obama supporter, if I was unsure about him and wanted to know about the McCain/Palin ticket, I would be out of luck. I don't understand how we as American voters cannot be allowed to know fully about a candidate that would be the co-leader of this country. And are we to expect that everytime someone says a cross word about her that a memo will come out shouting unfairness. I am truly very disappointed in the campaign process and feel that we the voters are not being respected like we should be. It is ultimately about us, not the candidates.

I guess the Repubs are too scared to lie now as too many of their lies have bee uncovered! GOOD JOB CNN!

And I think Palin should refuel but this time in Washington not Ireland and I think her destination should be ALASKA and not for a visit but for permanent residency! And I think she should take McCain with her as Liars like company! My town doesn't take to blantant Liers, women who mock and belittle community workers or mothers that put fame, glory, and authority seeking positions before their children. And we especially have no time for women trying to pretend they know something about running a country but can't even answer the simple questions regarding their Nation!

It bothers me that the evangelicals seem to like McCain/Palin. I keep hearing that they are in step with their (evangelical) values. How can this be when so much of their campaign is lies? Are lies part of the christian values? I am a christian and I do not think so. Why would we want another term of leaders we can't trust to tell us the truth.

The premise of Roland Martin is that anyone who votes against Obama is a racist. I am a hillary supporter, and I am voting against him beause of his sexist treatment of Hillary Clinton.

Wow, I guess the McCain-Palin felt that this was the best time to release this information because the nation is concerned about Ike and the residents of Texas.

For those that believe in the McCain-Palin ticket, this interesting bit of news does not matter.

If they lie about such simple things, they definitely cannot be trusted. The media should collectively refuse to cover the Mccain/palin campaign untill they start being honest. THEY ARE LIARS AND HAVE NO HONOR OR INTEGRITY.

I am beginning to see a patern here. Wow, her introduction to the American people is filled with lies, and she continues to lie.

Exactly what kind of Christian is she? I did not realize Christians lie so easily is that usually true?

And for the family thing, is that really the example you want to teach your children, too lie to win?

We here from the far-right about morals, values, and ethics and yet there seems to be a double standart here.

    Wow...

Good Lord if Obama had not canceled his Saturday Night Live appearance. Grumpy Grampa McBush would have fallen down and not been able to get up. He would have held the emergency button on his life alert and screamed about how he delayed the GOP convention for Gustav but Obama went to SNL ! Now Pick me up !

Give me a break – are we really dickering over whether she actually walked a few extra feet into Iraq? How many times had Obama been to Iraq before the primaries? Zero? How many times had he been to even Kuwait? Zero? Let's see – zero times zero equals . . . zero foreign policy experience.

Face it – Palin's AT LEAST as qualified as Obama is on foreign policy. The fact that the Obamalist Media is frantically screaming over a bogus border dispute only indicates that to me that the arrogant Obama political machine is actually starting to get worried about being behind in the polls.

But you know, I'm ready for the MSM to start heaping up on the Republicans. They do it every election. The difference, though, is that THESE days, the liberals aren't in total control of the national narrative. Poor liberals! Cable TV and the internet have interfered with their national stranglehold on message. Too bad – I guess the rest of us get to form our own opinions just like grownups!
