Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

No need to even comment here, but I will. If people at this point don't see the McCain/Palin ticket for what they are, they are just beyond reach. First the earmark spending, then the profit from the jet, then the bridge to no where, then the lies about Obama, and now this. They are desperate for a win and McCain, originally an honorable man, has sunk to such a low level it is sad.

What do you expect from a political team built on a cornerstone of lies, a foundation of deceit, and walls of fallacy?

But America gets what it votes for – vote wisely.

McCain is really hurting his credibility , and showing the American People that he is quickly becoming a Man without Honor. He is clearly showing he is more like Bush then anyone would have beleived.

If McCain can not be trusted in the Campaign , he surely can't be trusted to lead this Country.

    John McCaine

I am very disappointed in you. What can we believe about your campaign. You have went from being respected to just.. disappointing.
I can't believe the lies that keep rolling. I thought that you love AMerica. I mean no disrespect to Palin, but she is simply not ready. Why would you put the country you say you put first, by placing somebody on the ticket that you thought could help you win.

There were other more experienced women ( the game changer you needed) that could have gotten you the results you needed, as well as a few Republican men.

You have not put your country first.

We have have spent the last 8 years being lied to, Now we are being lied to again.

    Thanks but no thanks.

Experience is cool and all, but really none of the four of them have experience being president. They have their own areas of expertiece, but being president is really a learn as you go job. Every day is a new challenge, in an ever changing world. You have to be calm, cool and collected, know your facts, think through problems, seek advice from experts, and then make rational well thought out decisions. As President you don't always have to do what's popular, if it is the right thing to do, but you should also make every attempt to listen to the people, and be willing to modify your approach so it incorporates the will of the people. First and foremost you need to be honest and trustworthy, whether you are dealing with a foreign ruler or the average joe or jill American. If your word is not your bond, what is the point, other countries wont trust you, and neither will your people. Most importantly you must remain calm, even in the face of stupidity and make rational, thoughtful judgements, never flying of the cuff, as the results may not only affect every American, but every person on the planet. Let's face it, if this is the Criteria we measure a good President, then Sarah Palin fails miserably. Sure she seems like a nice enough person, but she obviously does not know her facts, whether it's interational relations, the environment, or even the economy. She has already gotten caught in quite a few lies, and she is fairly hostile in interviews (under pressure). While McCain has a fairly good knowledge base, he also has a bad habit of lying, as is very quick to get hostile, and makes a lot of off the cuff descisions, like hiring Sarah Palin. Its like when everybody plays by the rules, and waits their turn in the lunch line, only to have Mrs, Palin budge her way into the line at the last minute. She simply has not paid her dues, she has not earned her spot. Again if the criteria is knows your issues, honesty, calm under pressure, and well thought out descisions, then Biden would make a good President, and Obama would make an excellenct president! You can argue experience till your blue in the face, but if your president can not be trusted, is easily angered, and makes off the cuff desisions, then what is the point!

Come on Dems, lighten up. Palin went to the Iraq border with the intent to go into Iraq. Then her group recieved reports of Bosnian Snipers and Wolves in the area so they turned back.

Once again it show that the republicans are a bunch of lairs and can't be trusted to tell the whole truth. They can slide the mud, and I hope the American people will someday wake-up and realize that both George Bush and Chenny have been cloned, McCain being Bush and Sarah, getting ready to hunt attorneys, being Chenny.
