Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

A Palin aide confirmed details of her foreign travel Saturday.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Please keep a close eye on these people. They are counting on the American people to swallow the lies they continue to dish out. People still think we attacked Iraq because of 9/11 for crying-out-loud. The media needs to take it upon themselves to educate the poeple about the TRUTH. The frustration I feel when I hear people parrot these lies is unbearable. Don't let them scare you with that 'liberal media' tag. If Republicans are angry about the truth, too bad.

Between now and Nov, and even w/o the need for Obama to pull out the big guns, the McPalin ticket is going to funk up something stinky.

Mark my words........"We ain't seen or heard nothing yet." Bombs are going to start dropping all around Sarah so much so that John McCain's gonna start having flashbacks. I'm not attempting to be a jokester here, or make sport of his military experience. Nope, I'm using the extreme to paint the picture that we're all going to witness in the coming weeks via the surprise after surprise of just who Palin truly is.

I actually feel empathy for McCain because I think-believe he's suffering from "look at me ma, I'm on top of the world!" He's finally got that one shot, and a last shot to prove to his dead father & grandfather that I'm better than an Admiral, I'm President, and to that end he's ironically play fast and lose with his honor. He's not the John McCain I voted for in 2000 by any stretch of the imagination.

That guy had principals and honour, and honesty. He owned what he said, and he said what he meant, and he apologised if he got it wrong instead of deflecting it away onto someone else. He has sold his sole for this shot, and I'm not so sure his legacy will escape being seriously beatup because of what I know is coming.

I thank God that the press is finally doing its job! If they had not been timid on the iraq info the nation got from the whitehouse maybe we would not be in a war.

I appreciate them catching Hillary in a lie (snipergate) and now catching Palin in lies (trooper, and visit gate, and later on people will see Bristols baby is being claimed by a black guy). I don't appreciate the JWright-gate as it was overdone, but rezco was appropriate. I am at the point I don't care if the candidate is green, if the press does their job well we can all rest we have made good decisions on picking a president for this great nation.

  6. Where are issues ?

    This is a no-issue.

Obama recently took a 10-day World-tour to add to his credentials all Foreign Policy experience, so can Palin.

What Democrats are not talking about is the problem that they have with a small-town-American elected for VP.

C'mon Mr Obama, give chance to small-town-American, not all are BITTER.

Be interesting to see how many bald face lies these two can pack into the campaign. Because they are off like a greyhound out of the box at the moment.

I realize politicians can be misleading but there seems to be an abundance of lies and distractions from the McCain/Palin campaign. This would be funny if it were not such an important election. Obama/Biden may not be the perfect candidates but the thought of McCain/Palin leading the country is somewhat disturbing.

The Republicans want another shot at running the country but it's obvious they don't deserve it on the basis of the state of our economy, gas prices, unemployment, poor national education performance and the costly immoral war in Iraq.

I've heard some of Obama's proposed plans for the country but it seems like I did not hear or missed McCain's plans.
    Bring of the debates.

    God bless us all.

Ha ha ha...the McCain campaign has resorted to telling us where Gov. Palin went on vacation to shore up her credentials? Boggles the mind.

Serious question: Of all the people John McCain had to choose from when picking his VP candidate, is Sarah Palin the most qualified?

    Both answers scare me.

Just another lie Palin has to explain. Put the jet on E-bay – but did'nt sell there, sold it through a plane broker at a big loss to state, didn't really support the promotion of condom contraception – but supported it in at least three speaches, didn't suppor the bridge to nowhere – but ran commercials showcasing it during her run for Governor, doen't support pork barrel earmarks – but took them and asked for them as Mayor of Wasilla and as Governor. Yeah she's a Maverick – a Maverick Liar.

For all those bothered by the endless discussion four years ago of whether John Kerry actually ever went into Cambodia, I hope you are equally troubled by the nit-picky discussion of whether Sarah Palin was ever in Iraq or just on the Iraq-Kuwait border.

As someone with a loved one serving in Iraq, I find it utterly reprehensible that she would lie about going there for political gain.

It is PATHETIC that a person like John McCain who you will think claim love his country will LIE to get to the highest office. This is serious and questionable to we the electorates. This is the biggest challenge to an electorate that are extremely less informed.

In the History of United State, this is the first time an honorable P.O.W will degrade the office of the Presidency in order to occupy it.

What happen to the media that help George Bush to take us to the war we never thought was necessary.

We have seen this movie before..remember? that it is ok to lie and the media never hold no one to their feet. The people will be the one to lose again. not wake up, keep sleeping, your Govt. is with you, you will be fine with another liar to lead us so keep sleeping.

The Repblicans bring out this twit and claim she is ready to be VP and Pres. This is a sham. This woman has more baggage than LAX.She is clearly not qualified for any position. White woman claim thay can relate to Sara because they see themsrlves when they see Sara. Most black women can't even afford to let their kids play hockey. They are falling for the invisible pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. McCain put her on the dock with a fishing pole to reel in all the woman sitting on the fence. They took the bait. Most women will vote for Palin only because she is a woman. Look at the issues ladies. The Republicans don't talk about the issues because thay don't have any answers. All they want to do is sling mud to blow blow smoke up your panties.

Sarah Palin is only "fools gold". Is this what the American public wants? Another four years of lies, deceptions, misquotes, etc. from our leaders. This only proves how little the Republican party and it's nominee cares about the American people and our future. Not only is McCain not about change or the future of our government. He doesn't respect his country to select a credible and honest running mate.

    September 13, 2008 09:01 pm at 9:01 pm |
