(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.
In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.
The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.
Earlier: McCain defends Palin's experience level
Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.
(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)
The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.
The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.
"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”
A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.
UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:
"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."
And the lies keep on coming
The Republicans and McCain where attacking Obama for not having returned to Iraq for a period of 900 or so days until his recent summer visit there. Now we learn that Palin has never even been inside of Iraq. She has never seen the situation on the ground there. What a double standard! The media isn't being unfair to Palin, if anything they aren't scrutinizing her record enough. Her candidacy is just one big deception!
Why am I not surprised? Just keep on talking. I hope all you silly women that think she is all that will just open your eyes a little bit before she makes a fool out of all of you.
Ambition is one thing but out right lying won't get Palin in the White House. I wouldn't trust Palin with my own child.
OK....so the Alaskan governor's aide did not know what they were talking about. Governor Pailin never claimed she was there, so you ask a confused staffer and now make a big case. Hey CNN, we know you have never made a mistake by one of your staff.
Wildly inflated crowd estimates. The estimates I have seen in the Washington Post for the Fairfax, VA were in the 15,000 range. Did Senator Obama's' estimate of 10,000 at the Nissan Pavillion were also 'wildly inflated as I saw a number of 8,400. Were the Nielsen ratings also inflated?
Can you guys do a fair job? It is very apparent that you favor one candidate. You have not asked the same questions or question with the same intensity Senator Obama's 'problems' You have taken now longer to question some silly questions about Governor Pailin (she sold the plane for a loss...when was the last time anyone sold an airplane or a car for a profit?) than the time you spent questioning Senator Obama about Reverend Wright, about his 'terrorist' connection, his home purchase, etc? Your vitrol at being wrong in guessing Senator McCain's choice of Governor Pailin, plus your wanting to be 'cool' in backing an African American candidate (even an inexperienced one) instead of looking at the issues. If Governor Pailin is unqualified, then Senator Obama is unqualified for the same reasons (two years experience), if Senator McCain is 'old school', part of the Washington establishment, etc, then Senator Biden is also from the same cloth...what 'change' are we talking about. When Senator Obama made his choice fpr VP, he went back to the 'establishment', when Senator McCain made his choice for VP, he went for the most popular governor in the US, who happens to be a female...now who proved they are seeking change?
CNN and other news media (both liberal and conservative) seem to be in a feeding frenzy, just to get higher ratings. Both campaigns have made errors and given out wrong/incorrect/distorted information. Your job is to report the true facts and not editorialize. As Sgt Friday used to say "just the facts" ....we the people can make our own mind, without your patronizing editorials
McCain doesn't need to lie to win...what happened to the "Straight Talk Express"? Maybe he should just stick to talking about what he has planned for the future instead of trying to bring his opponent down with Rove/Schmidt tactics – which, lets face it, brings the whole country down.
Where are the comments for this article?
Lies, Sex, and Scandals!
That's the Palin Way!!!!
The more we learn about Palin the more there is to hate about her!
And the beat goes on. You're going down pitbull.
We already got a government that lied us into a war in iraq, why do we need mccain and peelin?are we that dumb?
A campaign built on lies is a bad sign, other countries are watching us and this will not be good for foreign policies in the future, what foriegn government will trust these guys, after what we got now, it is really a shame that americans are clinging to known liars.
Of course a woman would be good for the ticket, but not this one, after all the known lies,if mccain should win and something happen to him which foreign power can peelin call on who knows her.
Now i do not want to bash her,but the reality is staring us in our face and is like we are blinded by lies.
WOE UNTO THOSE WHO CALL EVIL GOOD AND GOOD EVIL!
She is another Bush. Full of lies. She has no understanding of foreign policy. It is obvious that she has been faking and winging through the interview. Letting her become V.P. and possiblly take over presidency is like the U.S. letting a blind lead the nation & world. We must stop this.
Did anyone really expect Palin to ever tell the Truth? She doesn't even know what the Truth is! She didn't even know there was a World outside of Alaska, till some idiot named McCain introduced it to her.
You mean they lied? I'm shocked! NOT
Sarah Palin is campaigning across the Country!
Todd Palin is in the middle of a Snow Moble Race!
Who in the World is taking care of their 4 month old child with Down Syndrome???? Who???
Who was there when Bristol Palin got pregnant while 16???
If you can't take care of your own family, you shouldn't be telling everyone else what to do with theirs!!! And if you can't deal with the Problems in your own Family, then you definetely can't deal with the Problems of the Country or the World!!!
Pain, Go back to Alaska and be the Soccer Mom you Claim to Be!!!!
So what else do the McCain/Palin Handlers have to hide at first, only to reveal later on when the going gets tough for their team? Did John actually know that his running mate is not being too honest about her claims such as her trip to Iraq to visit the troops? If Sarah is an agent of change as she claims she is, who will shake up Washington if she gets there, why does she allow herself to be muzzled by the political handlers of her party who admitted "...this is our campaign and we will do what we think is best..." or something to that effect?
As a woman, I am so insulted by her meek submission to the handlers running the campaign, who, no doubt will run Washington if this team is elected.
I am scared for the next four years...
But there is hope. There are more intelligent and concerned citizens in this country.
WHY won't the media, CNN included just tell the American people that this lady is NOT qualified and stop the LIES about her experience. The American people deserve better than this in order to know the truth BEFORE the election NOT AFTER!!! Who is surprised!!!!!!!
STOP the MADDess and hype over this chick and tell the TRUTH about her. WE deserve nothing less!!!!
Sarah Palin claims to be a Soccer Mom, but none of her kids play Soccer!!!!
Which kid is suppose to be playing Soccer???
Track in the Army?
Bristol knocked up with a baby?
The 4 month old with Down Syndrome?
The girl that's around 6 years old?
Or the other young teen girl, who is too busy taking care of the baby, because her mom is never around???
Palin herself always said she went to Kuwait, not Iraq. Just because her spokesperson is wrong, doesn't mean she is. Get over it liberal media, she is a "rock star" amongst all the people you have alienated!
Please stop McCain / Palin from destroying Social Secrity !!
Oh gee, yet another lie Palin has told. This is getting old and is utterly disgraceful. Her interview with Gibson made one thing clear, Gibson would be a better VP! She used the words 'gonna' and 'somethin' quite frequently. Does the think using slang is appropriate as the prospective VP of our country? She sounded like a moron and never answered the questions unless Gibson really pushed her to give a straight answer. The smoke and mirrors will only carry you so far, Sarah. It's time to go back to Alaska and do what you do best – eat mooseburgers.
Good. We just ousted Iraq's old dictator. It doesn't need a new one.
Lies Lies Lies.....now I see why McCain (sorry McSame) picked her.
What a joke of a team....
Obama/Biden 08 & 2012
Lies, lies and more lies from the McCain campain. And someone needs to sew Sarah Palin's mouth shut.
