Campaign confirms Palin did not go beyond Iraqi border

(CNN) – Sarah Palin did not visit troops in Iraq, a spokesperson for the Republican VP nominee confirmed Saturday, as new details emerged about the extent of the Alaska governor’s foreign travel.

In July of last year, Palin left North America for the first time to visit Alaskan troops stationed in Kuwait. Palin officials originally said her itinerary included U.S. military installations or outposts in Germany and Kuwait, and that she had visited Ireland. An Alaska spokeswoman for Palin had said Iraq was also one of the stops on that trip.

The Boston Globe reported Saturday that Palin visited the Iraqi side of a border crossing - but never journeyed past the checkpoint.

Earlier, campaign aides confirmed reports that Palin’s time in Ireland on that trip had actually been a re-fueling stop.

(UPDATED with campaign statement after the jump)

The Obama camp – which has increasingly accused the McCain campaign of deliberately lying in ads and on the stump – was quick to highlight to that story, along with a news report that explored whether the McCain campaign have been sending out wildly inflated crowd estimates.

The McCain team has twice pointed to law enforcement as the source for those estimates – but the same officials denied to Bloomberg News that they had provided the numbers cited by the Republican nominee’s campaign.

"The McCain campaign said Governor Palin opposed the Bridge to Nowhere, but now we know she supported it,” said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor in a statement. “They said she didn't seek earmarks, but now we know she hired a lobbyist to get millions in pork for her town and her state. They said she visited Iraq, but today we learned that she only stopped at the border. Americans are starting to wonder, is there anything the McCain campaign isn't lying about?”

A Palin spokesperson also confirmed Saturday that the governor had visited Mexico on a personal vacation trip. She has also visited Canada.

UPDATE: The McCain-Palin campaign issued a statement late Saturday in which they said Palin had traveled into Iraq, although she did not go beyond the border crossing:

"Last summer, Governor Palin travelled to Kuwait where she visited Alaskan National Guard troops deployed to the war in Iraq at Camp Arifjen. While she was there she travelled to the K Crossing on the Kuwait-Iraq border, and a quarter mile into Iraq. According to the General who travelled with her, while she was there she presided over a re-enlistment ceremony of an Alaskan National Guard soldier. En route back to the United States, she travelled to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. While in Germany, Governor Palin visited wounded soldiers at the Landstuhl military hospital. She then returned home. She has also visited Canada, as well as Mexico for a vacation."

Will this be Palin's Bosnia moment? It should be. How many more lies is the American public willing to put up with?

Another lie, Mrs. Palin, you say you are a Christian, so why do you keep lying. Did you ever read the ten commandments? Thou Shalt not bear false witness.

Just one more lie from the McCain/Palin ticket! This is not surprising at all! I'm sure that there is more to come.

And the lies continue to mount. Too bad many people do not care as long as they don't have to vote for a black man with a funny name. If McCain wins we will know exactly what we are getting; what we've had for the last 8 years, decietful republicans.

  5. White Mother for Obama!!

WOW she visited some countries some on a vacation trip... That is NOT foreign experience. That is not experience to go and visit AMERICANS (troops)... Foreign relations involves getting to know another ones culture and getting to know some of the Leaders in those cultures.

Obama grew up in other cultures, he has met leaders and prime ministers etc. She has done nothing but visit troops and go on vacation. Wooppee doo.

I am tired of the McCain/Palin lies. I saw the ad that said she has been in Iraq. Lies Lies Lies

When is it gonna stop?? When is America gonna wake up?? After so many lies doesnt it have you questioning anything??

Hey got to give Palin some credit...she sure did learn how to effectively embellish her experiences pretty quickly just like any crafty Washington politician! This is typical of the usual politics that both parties have employed in the past. Has everyone forgot about Hillary "ducking bullets from snipers"?

  9. interesting...

So now i want to see Fox News put up a countdown clock showing the number of days since Palin visited Iraq. If it was so essential for Obama to understand the situation on the ground, why isnt it for her? Double standards? fair and balanced?

Is anyone keeping track of the sheer quantity of dishonest claims by the McCain campaign? Is this really what we need? If the campaign is, in fact, run by the same people who ran the Bush campaign, is it possible the 8 years of Bush were full of lies, the same lies being published in books? They deny, they say it's all BS, but can we believe them? Get these pigs out of office.

The McCain campaign lied again.. No!!!! I dont believe it. Honestly, I see an emerging pattern from a desparate campaign. Their internals must really say something.

    um...

McCain's campaign seems a little desperate to me. If they were smart, they'd realize that fabricating (or embellishing) Palin's experience will only harm them in the long run.

for now it only helps obama/biden! woot!

Wow! Caught lying again. How many does this make now? This would be breaking news if the shoe was on the other foot! But no, just like all the other lies, CNN hides it in the political ticker. Nice!

And we are surprised because . . . ? Maybe she was too busy saying "Thanks but no thanks" to remember her vast travel experiences. But hey, she can see Russia, so she's ready to go!

  17. Ex-mod-GOP for Obama

Bottom line: She's not qualified to be Vice President. Barack Obama has extensive experience in the containment of Russian nukes, working with Richard Lugar, and worked with Chuck Hagel on nuclear terrorism. Palin lives in a state that has a remote island from which one can see a sparsely populated sliver of Russia.

Tell the "Big Lie!" That is the way to fool the weak minded and under-educated. It is also how you enlarge yourselfand win at any cost. McCain should be ashamed of himself. Simarly, in my neighborhood, having a child out-ofwedlock is a shameful act, bringing disgrace and ridicule to the family and community. And now a VP candidate-who ought to be a model of virtue along with your family-proudly acknowledges that her then 16 year old daughter is pregnant. Horrid, inexcusable, and shows that her ambitions mean more to her than raising children who are moral and upstanding.

Guys, the question is not on what countries' soil she's technically put her feet. The question is whether she's _been_ to other countries in any meaningful sense of the word. Visiting US bases is a good thing to do, but it's not a visit to a foreign country – it's a visit to a US base. Most Americans don't travel much, and that's okay (regrettable, but okay). But most Americans aren't running for second-highest post in the country, either.

I think the McCain camp should continue lying and getting caught in their lies. It will destroy any credibility they might have had. If people still continue to vote liars into office then they will deserve the further decline that will most definitely happen in this country.
