Obama and his camp aimed tough talk at McCain Saturday.

MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (CNN) – In a shift from the apolitical tone the presidential candidates took during Hurricane Gustav, Barack Obama did not temper his rhetoric Saturday, as his spokesman accused John McCain of “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”

“John McCain wants to have a debate about national security let’s have that debate. I warned that going into Iraq would distract us from Afghanistan. John McCain cheer-leaded for it. John McCain was wrong and I was right,” Obama told a screaming New Hampshire crowd.

“The McCain-Palin ticket, they don’t want to debate the Obama-Biden ticket on issues because they are running on eight more years of what we’ve just seen. And they know it,” Obama said. “As a consequence what they’re going to spend the next seven, eight weeks doing is trying to distract you.

“They’re going to talk about pigs and they’re going to talk about lipstick, they’re going to talk about Paris Hilton, they’re going to talk about Britney Spears. They will try to distort my record and they will try to undermine your trust in what the Democrats intend to do.”

Watch Obama on Hurricane Ike

Asked why the campaign responded differently than it did around hurricane Gustav, Obama Senior Strategist David Axelrod said,“We have enormous concern for people down there … that’s why we canceled “Saturday Night Live” … but these people also came out because they’re really concerned about the future of the country and he [Obama]wanted to talk about those issues.”

Listen: Obama camp conference call Saturday slams McCain

The McCain campaign criticized Obama for showing “zero restraint” given the storm and said “today’s attacks mark a new low from Barack Obama.”

The Obama camp’s response was even tougher. “We will take no lectures from John McCain who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today. He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.”

At the start of his rally, Obama did put politics aside, encouraging the thousands of voters in attendance to think about those in Texas dealing with the fall out from hurricane Ike.

“I’ve been on the phone with the head of FEMA and mayor of Houston and others who are trying to grapple with this tremendous storm,” he said “I know that one of the things that we’ve seen after Gustav, one of the things that we saw after Katrina and Rita is that during difficult times during moments of tragedy the American people come together. We may argue we may differ but we are all Americans.”

The enormous storm prompted the Obama campaign late Friday night to cancel their candidate’s appearance on the season premiere of “Saturday Night Live” saying that it was “no longer appropriate” given what Gulf residents were facing. Obama’s running-mate Senator Joe Biden also was supposed to attend the Manchester rally but did not.

However, unlike two weeks ago when hurricane Gustav was bearing down on Louisiana,

Obama heads back to Chicago for the weekend before heading out Monday to Colorado.

Tell him like it is Barack! Great job! It's time to get tough. We all know you can do that in a gentlemen's fashion compared to McSame..

McCain and Palin are liars. If the media does not call them on it they are sheep.

Clinton/McCain   September 13th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Sorry Obama, but YOU are the one running a dirty camapaign. You did it against Hillary and now against McCain. Who's the one who played the race card at about 1000 times.

PUMA

Alicia   September 13th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Obama continues to explain the McCain campaign's strategy. I think the strategy is pretty self-explanatory given the copious attack ads. Obama should simply state that McCain's treating Americans like they're stupid, and someone who stoops so low and displays so little judgment and insight doesn't warrant much mention.

Jonathon   September 13th, 2008 5:14 pm ET

Don't reward 8 years of lies and theft with 4 more years. We must draw the line and stop this here and now.

Honestly, can McCain stoop ANY LOWER than he already has? Some maverick. His campaign, his staff, their constant outright lies, their lack of ethics totally disgust me.

For the John McCain camp we the voters need to hear the real issues because the economy is bad right now and we do not know when things are going to get better.stop running all these lies about Obama , all we care about is the truth and who is going to help us

Talk about sleaziest campaign in modern history? shows that obama is still green, Obama is the king of sleaze.

obama disses John McCain an American Hero Icon. That is unbelievable. Some gave all to serve their country, while Obama gave a speech.

The McCain campaign criticized Obama for showing “zero restraint” given the storm and said “today’s attacks mark a new low from Barack Obama.”

But Obama is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history,

His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today. Obama runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.”

When the lies come back to roost, it is nice to McCain can only respond with another round of faux outrage since they can't defend the smears they've spewed onto the airwaves.

As McCain puts it so delicately, "Campaigns are rough things."

Get over it, Tucker! McCain's powder is all wet at this point . . . I guess he should have held onto his integrity a bit longer.

Bob   September 13th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

John McCain is a liar and I just sent him a message to that effect. How else can one explain is 'ad' about immigration reform?

David   September 13th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

Where was Mr. Any Time, Any Where when McCain was asking for 10 townhall debates? Now that he's behind in the polls he wants to debate? Suck it up and stop the whining! I'm sure McCain would love to debate you. He will crush you on every issue. That's why you wouldn't debate in the first place.

They have spewed lies, misrepresented the Democratic position on Taxes, Immigration, Economy etc and will go down in flames come November.

They McCain Campaign is a desperate, vile and disgusting group.

Is this the change they plan on bringing to DC?

DWoods   September 13th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

If you think Obama is at a "new low", what about that kindergarten remark about teaching our 6 year-old sex education? All the news media, talk shows, and Americans know that was a blatant lie. So do you! Let's talk issues and a better life for all Americans.

THE $490 BILLION DOLLARS IN DEFICIT FOR 2009!

THE NUMBER ONE REASON AMERICANS FILE FOR BANKRUPTCY……. HEALTH CARE!

HOW THE AVERAGE AMERICAN'S WAGES HAVE DROPPED FROM $61,000 IN 2001 TO $60, 000 THIS YEAR!

McCain comes out with ads attacking Obama for teaching children how to avoid abuse from pedophiles – ! – and new facts come out each day about his own campaign lies, yet we're supposed to just believe whatever he says; Obama keeps bringing up specific facts and plans for the future, and HE's "sunk to a new low?"

lou   September 13th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Molly Weasley   September 13th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Kent, Illinois   September 13th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

The Republican convention was a sham. They pretended to care about the victims of the storms because they knew how badly Bush treated them after Katrina. I believe Obama actually really cares. When will Americans understand that the GOP isn't about most Americans? And no……….the GOP ticket does not want to debate the Dems. They will be forced to defend the last 8 yrs and why they have pushed this country into the ditch……….and don't care they did it either. If you put all of the social issues that affect most Americans on a paper you would realize that the Democrats were behind all of them. For the people……..to help. Independents will go left this year……….

Melissa   September 13th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

My heart goes out to the victims of Hurricane Ike, but we can't afford to stop talking bout the future of this country every time there is a national disaster. The stakes are too high and the time is too short, and the McCain camp has shown "zero restraint" in their lies. Let's keep it comin', Obama!

Michelle   September 13th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

McCain says that Obama is at a new low for "blasting him" during Ike. So if that is a low McCain…Why did you air your new attack ad on the same day? What you can talk negative about others but they can't talk about you? You can be an immoral liar and a cheater, but then you want to cast stones? You accuse others about being a celebrity, but then you try to transform yourself into (even though you have failed in movies (Wedding Crasher), Saturday Night Live (played the creepy OLD husband), and by far beat ANY candidate in appearing in the most talk shows. You tout yourself as a reformer and you first "presidential" decision was to pick a VP with higher earmark spending per capita in the whole United States! 4 million dollars you approved Sarah Palin for researching sea crabs in a state that only has 660,000! Yeah, that is reform for wasteful spending! You talk about country first but then you chose a VP who has, along with her husband promoted and participated in the AIP? A strong group of people that do not want any government or rules from the US and want to be their own entity! Is this what you mean about smaller government! If McCain dies it will be Alaska first…not country first. God bless AMERICA and not the divisive policies that fostered us in the previous 8 years of being China's…..(you know what I want to say-but I am a Christian woman) mistress!

Judy from NC   September 13th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Keep telling the truth about McCain's campaign and his stand on the issues Senator! The truth may hurt, but it's not an attack.

"If you don't stop lying about me, I'm going to start telling the truth about you." – Barack Obama

I don't understand why Obama doesn't call McCain out on the obvious which is his feeble mind. Many people think McCain is simply a liar but it is quite possible he can't remember what's been said or documented days before.

Hopefully Obama will go for the jugular when they do the debates and McCain will explode as he is very very unstable and a loose cannon ready to explode. Look what the women did to him with a few simple questions and he couldn't handle it.

"John McCain believes the Vietnam War was winnable. He argues that an Obama administration would accept defeat in Iraq, with grave costs to American honor and national security. Is McCain’s quest for victory a reflection of an antiquated pre-Vietnam mind-set?…Is there any war McCain thinks can’t be won?"

"…McCain believes, among other things, that “some political problems have military solutions.” A related McCain belief that’s even more out of sync with America’s current mood…."

If this is a new low for the Obama campaign, I shudder to think what we would have to call the McCain campaign. They do have a point though, Barack has been taking the high road when compared to all the distortions and sleaze and outright lies coming from the Republicans.

Mary   September 13th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

I love it when the Republicans go after Obama for playing dirty…I guess they know what they are talking about since they are the ones who invented it. I think the McCain camp is willing to scorch the earth to win this thing..both literally and figuratively. Of course most of his supporters probably don't even know what I just said……..including his new running mate…probably never read a book in her life besides the Bible.

Susan   September 13th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

The truth hurts McCain. His campaign has been sleazy. They're purposefully keeping Palin away from the press to keep the public in the dark about how uninformed she really is on critical issues. The only way McCain knows how to lead is militarily, and I'm not so sure he's the best person in that respect – a little to eager to fight, in my opionion. Bottom line – the GOP doesn't have any real answers to clean up the mess they've created in the last 8 years.

Anonymous   September 13th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

It does not surprise me that Obama is inconsiderate of the Texan's suffering from the storm. Obama is for himself first and foremost. He moved up in Illinois by casting a black mark on his mentor there and getting her kicked out of the race, he got rid of Hillary when he felt threatened, he had his buddy/financer Oprah refuse to have Sarah Palin on the show, he insulted anyone who has not had an Ivy league education, he has not commented on P Diddy's racial insults, etc. McCain on the other hand has extended his hand to others, he selected a woman vp, his friend Lieberman-a democratic supporter-was allowed to speak at the republican convention, has worked with the other party to reach compromises whereas Obama wants to victimize Lieberman. Seems to pretty clear who is being negative-Democrats. With regards to issues Obama's has changed so many times depending on the audience that I don't think we will really find out what he really is for or against and the risk of voting him in office too great to find out. On the other hand Palin's selection of VP reminds me of another person who achieved great things-Golda Mier. McCain through his suffering in the prison camp has learned that no man is an island and we all need to work with others to survive. Obama to me comes across as the its all about me person who doesn't want to share the spotlight with anyone.

The McCain campaign has finally been called out on their lies and are choking on them. The funniest lie was how Obama was sexist with the lipstick on a pig comment on McCain ideas. You stole your campaign slogan from Bob the Builder. You are pathetic its the only way to describe you.

More Lies, More Fluff

McCain aide Kimmie Lipscomb told reporters on Sept. 10 that an outdoor rally in Fairfax City, Virginia, drew 23,000 people, attributing the crowd estimate to a fire marshal.

Fairfax City Fire Marshal Andrew Wilson said his office did not supply that number to the campaign and could not confirm it

In recent days, journalists attending the rallies have been raising questions about the crowd estimates with the campaign. In a story on Sept. 11 about Palin's attraction for some Virginia women voters, Washington Post reporter Marc Fisher estimated the crowd to be 8,000, not the 23,000 cited by the campaign.

"The 23,000 figure was substantiated on the ground," McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said. "The campaign is willing to stand by the fact that it was our biggest crowd to date."

"Since day one, this campaign has been consistent that we're not going to win or lose based on crowd size but the substance of John McCain's record," Bounds said.

Jaison Biagini   September 13th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

it's pretty easy to see who's tax policy would help more people. look at the breakdown by pay brackets. obama gives more money to the lowest earning americans that make up 85% of the population.
mccain gives the most money to 15% of the population making the most money. who is going to help the economy more?
a single millionaire who keeps 40,000 more dollars in his pocket, or 40 american families getting an extra $1000 each in their pockets?
40 families buy more food, cars and clothing that create more jobs for more americans.
how can government pay for anything when mccain will be bringing hundreds of billions less than obama?

it's common sense. if you compare every policy, head to head, mccain really is more of the same and obama is a new direction. it may not be perfect but it won't be the same failed policies of the last 8 years!!

Those independents that saw that interview are starting to come around to the Obama ticket. When the issues are discussed, you'll see the pure weaknesses of the McCain-Palin ticket. All fluff and no stuff.

It's like the Republican base in this country is equated to a "League of Morons"…. I cant understand how any informed person could actually consider casting a vote for McCain or Palin when their campaign is nothing but lies. You can debunk the stories, and they will still vote for their idiots, you can pull out their lies, and the people eat it up. How stupid are we as a nation? A "league of morons" that is what I say!!! How can America be stupid enough to let the Religious right rule this country? How could anyone cast a vote for McCain/Palin?

supporter   September 13th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Got to stick to the TRUTH!! But keep reminding the people thatthe LIES are being spread by McCain and PALIN. Everytime you speek detail yhour plans to make a change. Challenge McCain to let the Voters know what his plans are so they can make a choice. CHALLENG HIM on the TRUTH.

During the debate do not let him get a way with hs little one liners and slogans. If he tries look at him and shake your head and then say I think that the American people deserve more than slogans they need real answers and then explain what you will do to make real change.

carol   September 13th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Senator Obama is right to show the McPalin camp up for what they really are, both liars who repeat over and over again…..probably to try and convince themselves!!!!
The fact is they have no "new truthful message" and are a disgrace to the American people.
They will do and say absolutely anything to get into the White House
and you fools who want to vote them in should be ashamed.
So much for the latest slogan "COUNTRY FIRST", if they want to use that slogan they better start by telling the truth and getting Sarah Palin's background checked out first.
How dare John McCain stand up before his "flock of sheep" and boast
how she sold the plane on E Bay and for a profit (all being another lie of course) and acting like a demented school boy!!!!
Yes, this is a sad day in America when people can't see what is best for the whole country and just voting because you only have tunnel vision as far as the Republicans are concerned.

How anyone could have any respect for John McCain, after choosing Palin as his VP pick, someone he knows in his heart and soul is not even remotely qualified, is astounding.

It speaks volumes about Palin as well. She knows she is extremely inexperienced adn unqualified, yet whe will look right into a camera and tell teh country that she is prepared, not only for the position of VP, but possibly the presidency. She has no conscience, no love of country, no interest in what is best for America. Horrific!

This is a man who says he puts COUNTRY FIRST, claims to want the best for his country and all Americans. Bull!

John McCain has lost not only his dignity, but his values and respect for this country all for winning.

How disappointing and sad.

INDEPENDENT WOMEN FOR OBAMA/BIDEN   September 13th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

The truth is, it's time for Obama to start fighting back with the truth. He dont need to go negative with a lie, but go negative with the truth. McShame doesn't have a plate form to run on, so what they're tring to is distract the American people from the issues that really matters to the avarage women, man , and future of all our children. Obama please dont take the low road with McCain. Have anyone seen the interview with Gov. Sara Palin with ABC NEWS. It scare the hell out of me. to think that this women being a heart beat away from a 72 year old heart is very scary. It's clear that this women do not have enough foriegn policy. Obama keep pushing the issues. Fight for wha you believe in. donot let the republician take this election with thier lies and scandals. Seems like all the obamabots are spending the majority of their time attacking Palin, the VP candidate, than McCain who is actually the one running for President. I think it's because they see their idol on equal footing with Palin while it's obvious he's not eqaul to McCain.

Notice how the vast majority of comments on these stories are from the Obamabots, Don't confuse that with more support for the "chosen one." It's because these people are mainly young people who are either in college or high school, don't work. and haven't much to do but spew hate at anyone who they disagree with. I would even be willing to bet that, from the "intelligence" exhibited in their statements that a good many are in grammar school.

Lets ask them if they can name one of the lemming leaders accomplishments. Two to one they can't name any. Saw a segment where they had indpendents in a room who were asked to name accomplishments for Obama. Surprise! None of them could think of any. Oh, I have one. he learned early on how to read off a teleprompter.

Anita, NY   September 13th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Someone please tell Obama not to worry—because it's not paranoia if they are really after you. Karl Rove is Obama's worst nightmare, along with Sarah the Barracuda. Obama looks like he hasn't slept since Palins convention speech. Someone better get him some Ambien and a Valium.

WhereismyRepParty   September 13th, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Wow, this isn't your father's democrat. Obama calling it like it is on the day of a major hurricane isn't really politically correct is it? BRAVO! There may yet be hope for democrats. Predictably the McCain camp resorts to their typical pandering, which is what the government did to our fellow Americans during Katrina. I have to say that I respect the way the Obama campaign quickly put the McCain campaign in their place. Still, no one has been pointing to today's proof that off-shore drilling is NOT the secure cornerstone to energy policy that McCain wants you to believe.

Arkansan 4 Obama   September 13th, 2008 3:26 pm ET

I'm glad that he is getting tough on the old guy! It's about time.

Again the McCain campaign is trying to get away from the issues. They are trying to get the attention away from the disastrous Palin interview with Charlie Gibson!

CJ/PA   September 13th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Barack Obama is correct. This is, indeed, the sleaziest, most dishonorable campaign I have ever seen as well, from the Republicans. I guess what can one expect from Steve Scfhmidt and Karl Rove, but I'm surprised and disappointed at John McCain allowing this to happen, unless he's now showing his true colors. Now that he has Palin, he can forget the issues altogether — he's so happy he doesn't know what to do with himself! He trots her out to make her sarcastic, mocking remarks and distortions, while he stands there like McDolt with that silly grin on his face. Then he says, "Change is a'comin'. Since when??
Senator Obama, take the high road and stick to the issues, but keep saying 'ENOUGH!" to their sleaze and vitriol. That says it all.

Yngvai   September 13th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

More phony outrage from the McCain campaign. The McCain party is a joke and a bunch of whining hypocrites. They were the ones who started the entire Rovian attack ads and yet they whine like little babies when they're hit back.

I used to have respect for McCain. He's somebody I might have voted for back in 2000….before he aligned more closely with the party of hypocrites like he's done for this election cycle.

I was at the NH rally. After thanking the woman that introduced him and paying his respects, the very first thing he spoke of was hurricane Ike. He expressed concern, gave an update from his conversations with FEMA and other officials, then he asked supporters at the rally to contribute time and money to the Red Cross. He asked that people reach out to the Red Cross to see how they can help. Said money would be needed and even volunteers may need to go to TX and work. Then affirmed his confidence in everyone's ability and desire to help be they democrat, republican, or independent. First thing said. He did not begin to discuss opponents until well into his speech. Then, I doubt his remarks would be considered blasting! Also, just as a side, unlike John McCain and co., Senator Obama actually made it through an entire speech without telling a single lie!

It would be such a shame is white women took this political race so personal that they would fall for the trickery that McCain/Palin, Carl Rove and all his lobbyist are using in order to get the same outcome that 2000 and 2004 gave them. This is the very same reason the gas prices are soaring, unemployment is at its highest, global warming is in effect and people that are sick without health care. Our kids will not know their full potential because American do not have the funds to send them to college. Other countries are looking at us in disgust. They will disrespect us even more if they watch this happen right in front of their eyes. This is sad that the presidential race has become a racial race with tricks and distractions. Just as Barack Obama said, John McCain is running the sleaziest campaign that has ever been seen (and it's hard to top Bush's campaign against Kerry). Unfortunately for the voters, Obama has no option except to respond in kind. I hope that the voters will soon wake up and remember what this country was like 8 years ago (no Iraq war, a surplus instead of the largest deficit in history, almost unversal respect for our country instead of contempt, a more stable economy, etc., etc.); it is painfully obvious that the last thing that we need to do is to elect a man who voted with George Bush over 90% of the time and who picked a person for Vice-President who is clearly unqualified. If this country elects McCain/Palin after 8 years of Bush, there is no hope left.

Such a highly arrrogant remark from Palin. Joe Biden is so far superior to Sarah Palin and she is NOT on a par with Hillary Clinton.

I watched part of the interview with Charles Gibson, and at one point when she did not know the answer, she bristled and leaned forward in a very aggressive mode, AS IF TO SAY "HOW DARE YOU ASK ME THAt. " Her body language gave her away as the "Pit Bull with Lipstick" she describes herseslf.

Millions of Americans continue to lose their homes, thousands lose jobs, millions continue to exist in a life without health insurance for their children, as hundreds of thousands struggle with their existence living in sub-human conditions of poverty amidst terrors of everyday violence in their communities, while thousands of American families mourn the loss of thousands of murdered loved ones in Afghanistan and Iraq – families still trying to find answers to questions over why their children had to give their lives for what apparently appears to be lies told America about WMD that never existed, as hundreds of thousands of American children continue to drop out of high school each year with no hope for a better life here in America.

Rosa, b'ham al   September 13th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

I don't think that counts as blasting McCain, he is just pointing a legitimate policy difference. He is going to have to get more negative and personal than that. Anyone who has not made up their mind yet does not vote on policy issues. I am sick of Dems taking the high road and in the end the whole country suffers when they lose to the liars.

Please, Mccain and his group lies about how many people have been showing up for the duo rally. The lastest one held in VA they claimed that 20,000 came out. They also attributed that number to the fire marshall. However, the marshall said that he did not give that 20,00 0 quote and the crowd was no where near that large.
What happened to mccain. palin remarks are Hillary are an attempt to gain hillar's supporters.
I think they should conduct DNA on the new baby to see if he is the first dude's son. palin does not believe in abortion if after incest. I dont think anyone truly believe that the baby belongs to her.

BV   September 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

John McCain and our fine Christian Sarah Palin are running the worst and meanest campaign possible. It has been noted by many including the outside world. It is beyond belief. So many lies and distortions. His way of getting into office. He has shown me that lying comes easy for him and that I can't believe a thing he and Palin are promising to all of us.
The only reason McCain isn't out campaigning today is that it's Saturday and he doesn't work on weekends. It's not because he cares that much about the people of Texas. He doesn't care about anything other than what ever it takes to accomplish his personal goal of becoming President.
A vote for McCain is a vote for a lying POW.

Independent from FL   September 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

I feel Obama is stuck between a rock a hard place. If you don't attack back at McCain, you will seem weak but in the other if he does attack back then it doesn' look to me like he's running the new kind of
politics & in some people's eyes, he could come off as an angry black men.
I say attack back but be careful of the tone you attack McCain with.

ML   September 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Dear Senator Obama:

Do not fear! What I see as a volunteer of your campaign is that all of these DISTRACTIONS are pulling people together as true supporters of yours, more than ever!

Most intelligent people in the area where I live see the truth!! They see clearly through what the "current adminstration's supposed replacements" are tryting to do–and will not let the "distractions" keep us from working hard for you! ("MORE OF THE SAME — BRING SHAME TO AMERICA")

I was just in the Democratic headquarters in my area, and found out that there are more people coming in than ever–asking to be a part of your historic movement to return America to TRUE DEMOCRACY and not to the era of the lying, cheating, and manipulating by the opposite party!

I was so glad that people are coming into the Obama "change" headquarters and donating, offering to help, helping others, etc. Also, I was more glad to see that many of them are Republicans and independents who have said "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" — and do not want four more years of hatred, lack of concern for our citizens, and more job losses than we can handle!

We have lost our biggest employer in our small city, not to mention more companies who have pulled and and are planning to pull out. Every day, more "for sale" signs go up on houses, and people are applyhing for unemployment, food stamps for their children. They cannot afford health care, and are literally begging for any canned food, gas money, etc. that they can get to try to find a job!

This used to be a great state, and now it is at the bottom rung of the job and economic ladder! I myself am working over 80 hours a week to try to feed my family. (And not long ago, I was considered an executive whose very living has been taken away when all the companies pulled out!) I am staying here because of elderly relatives and the fact that I am not a quitter. I fight for what I believe in!! And I believe in OBAMA/BIDEN IN 08!! Only they have the concern and ability to bring about CHANGE in this country. Only they are really telling the truth!!

And, don't be fooled that these disasters cannot happen to you!! I have been the hardest worker, student, and over-achiever all my life, and it certainly has happened to me. I have lost just about everything that I have worked for all my life. It is not easy to start over again at my age. Having lost all my retirement is a killer, but it is also an incentive to work hard so others do not lose theirs!

My republican ancestors are crying out from their graves NOT TO BE FOOLED by this shambles of a republican party now brought down by greed and corruption! They would not be shocked by my becoming a DEMOCRAT! I feel they are standing right behind me, saying to fight for what I believe in.

Well, dear Senator Obama, Senators Biden and Clinton, and former President Clinton, we once saw the world with hope and encouragement. Here in our area, we saw more jobs than people to fill them when President Clinton was in office–eight years of prosperity to the point we thought the "gravy train" would never end. Then the republicans got into office. It was nothing but a downward spiral after that!

Please people, if you love your country, READ and OPEN your minds!! We need great leaders now, if at any time in our country!

DO NOT BE FOOLED by "wolves in sheeps" clothing!

VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN!! They are true LEADERS – WHO REALLY CARE ABOUT OUR COUNTRY!

Dylan   September 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

The stakes are too high for America and the rest of the world.

The country is going down the tubes and all the GOP wants is to keep holding on to power.

Palin is just another distraction like britney and paris, to be used and dumped. Its all a game to them, they dont care about you or your issues.
McCain will do and say anything to get elected, he's no longer his own man, he is now just a tool of the power hungry cabal running the GOP.

Tony   September 13th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

It is so pathetic and sad to see a man like John McCain willing to sell his own integrity, morals and values to win the election.

Once, McCain was a man to be respected, honored, and someone who was a role model.

Now he is a sad, bitter, angry old man who lies as easily as he breathes. His ads are not only misrepresentations, or distorted, but bold face LIES. He seems to have no conscience, no heart or soul any longer. He is now all about money, power and position to the detrim, ent of his humanness and character.

If he wins in November, I hope it is worth the price.

David Peter   September 13th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

McCain really has sunk to the lowest of scum.

Jim   September 13th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Where are all the Republicans running around saying that they 'need to send a message that they're concerned' about Gustav? Oh, right, they're not in the middle of a convention where people are paying attention to them. Not that they were actually ever concerned, mind you, but they were 'sending the message'.

Kaye- Jacksonville FL   September 13th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Eventually – even a toy poodle will bite its attacker!! Obama has tried to take the high road, focus on the issues – but the McCain campaign, led by those trained in Karl Rove tactics, insist on the same old approach…Bomb your voters with outright lies and fake outrage over stuff you've initiated. Stay away from issues – we have no fresh ideas.

IT WON'T WORK – DEMOCRATS ARE ON THE MARCH TO CHANGE THIS COUNTRY!! "ENOUGH"

cjg   September 13th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

It sounds like the Obama campaign has gone from scared to desperate and finally, to this new low – bitter.

How many more American casualties before Obama ends the war in Iraq?
Who will be the last casualty in the Iraq war. Sure hope it's not the child of Palin or McCain … or anyone? Why does McCain want to extend this war INDEFINITELY? I thought he said he HATES WAR.

I thought Mr Obama was above all this, isn't he for hope and change. Isn't he going to unite the country by running a different kind of campaign. LOL, really what a fraud this man is. He has not stood by one thing he has said, this doesn't surprise me in the least, anything to get a vote Obama, flip flops again!

Palin is fading the truth is coming out, Obama is back, he had the same message when he was up and when he was down, if you supported him, he is back. Credit to Mc he did make us loose out stand for a while but we see clealy now. Our President is back.

Jim   September 13th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Ok, so every thing the Obama campaign does is a new low, huh? Is that basically the GOP's stance?

alex   September 13th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Obama is telling it like it is. For those who seek truth, you can find it here. I challenge McCain supporters and Obama supporters alike to RESEARCH the truth, RESEARCH the policies, and RESEARCH the needs and wants of our country.

In the upcoming debates, we will truly see the metal, intelligence, and capabilities of our candidates and their VP's. Listen with unbiased minds and unbiased hearts because the very future of our country is at stake. Choose not what is good for the few, but what is good for the many. From the very founding of this country to the point we are at today, we have thrived because the individual was given the opportunity to thrive, if they desired it enough and worked hard for it.

In this election, we must elect the individual who will give the most opportunity for our countrymen and women. With a failing economy, expanded opportunity is exactly what we need. Each candidate will propose solutions. Some propositions will be nothing but empty rhetoric, others will have the ideas and momentum to be accomplished. We, the people, must decide who the better candidate to accomplish these things will be.

McCain/Palin is a good ticket. Sans celebrities, et al.

Lee for Obama   September 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

You go Senator Obama. Do what you need to do. We know what we need to do as Americans. We'll get out there today and join rescue efforts in the Gulf Coast. In the next few weeks we'll send books for ruined libraries and clothes for people who lost everything. And cash…we'll dig deep and send what we can. We'll offer homes for dogs and cats found as orphans in the storm. We'll line up and give blood to help the victims of the terrible commuter train crash in California.

We'll read the papers and use the internet to stay informed on what's happing in our country, and in Venezuela, and in Georgia, and Afghanistan, so that we can understand the issues that face us.

We will not take sound bites as fact. We will research the reality behind them. We'll read factcheck.org and nonpartisan reports. We'll keep asking questions until we get answers so that we can become what this country needs…an informed electorate. We'll hold Republicans and Democrats alike accountable.

We won't be distracted and make decisions based on "us against them" or on fear. We'll think about what we can do to help ourselves and reach out to those that need our help. We're doing what you asked us, as Americans, to do.

Now Senator Obama, you and Senator Biden do this for us…go out there and win this election.

Kristen   September 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Let me get this straight: The McCain camp says Obama has sunk to a new low? I see, so when McCain LIES over and over again he should just let them do it because of a hurricane. They're full of it. I don't want another president the LIES.

It's about time Obama started giving them a taste of their own medicine.

But notice that what Obama says is tough, but true. McCain and Palin, on the other hand, have been lying nonstop. We're used to a certain amount of spin from politicians, but McCain and Palin are just plain lying, every day, all day long.

I'm reminded of Mary McCarthy's description, "Every word out of their mouth is a lie…..including 'and' and 'the'…."

It's about time! My mother and other relatives live on the gulf coast and have had to leave their homes twice in two weeks. They were ravaged by Rita and now Ike has hit them too. My mother and relatives live in smaller cities and towns that don't get the same coverage and consideration during disasters. My nerves are on end, but I don't hold Obama or McCain responsible for continuing their campaigns. T

These natural disasters are acts of God that happen to hit during the current President's administration, not the soon-to-be president's. I would much prefer a clean campaign season that focuses on issues, and a more cohesive society that would accommodate such a courtesy as suspending a campaign under these circumstances, but I'm no idealist and we don't live in an ideal country today. I'm glad to see Obama fight back after all of this time instead of taking hits in a dirty fight like he's the whimp on the school yard.

Jesus! It's amazing how the dirtiest most integrity-lacking Republican campaign can be run and it's leaders attempt to stand in judgement of the other whith such a warped sense of elitist entitlement. Take as good as you give, McCain-Palin, and stop whining and demanding apologies like squealing pigs! (No lipstick intended!)

e.j.mohammed   September 13th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

McCain suddenly 2 weeks ago had his light bulb moment of change!

Obamas' campaign is pretty sleasy also. That is the nature of politics. I don't trust either one, I wanted Hillary. I hate to vote for the lesser of two evils, so guess I'll write Hillary on my ballot and hope whoever wins will do a fair job. I have heard "a third Bush term" so many times I think that is all they have. I do not believe for one second, McCain will be a" third Bush term." Republicians vote with Republicians, Democrats vote with Democrats thus the grid lock. McCain is one of the few who tries to cross party lines for the good of the country. Obama has voted 97% of the time with Democrats, so stop with the 90% McCain voted with Republicians. This should have been a given for the Dems., yet here we are, tied. Mr. EGO should have been the dream team, but NO he thinks he can win this on his own. How could anyone be so stupid as to ignore half the democratic base, and still expect to win?

I thought I was watching a comics show !…."a lifelong member of the NRA", a "moose hunter". "You can actually SEE Russia from here in Alaska". Well if this is the next VP of the USA then it is high time for China to take over the dominant role in the world !!. Shame also for the many sensible and good willing Americans, she does confirm all the prejudices about the average American.
From what I have seen so far of the American election circus, Mrs Clinton struck me as the most serious person in this Punch and Judy show.

If Obama wants to REALLY have a debate all he has to do is take McCain up on his offer to have weekly townhall meetings. Oh – I forgot that is something else he flip flopped on just like his WRITTEN commitment to take federal election money and not private donations.

The real problem for Obaha is he is lost without a telepromter.

Senator Obama should continue to pound away at McCain's sudden claim to be a "candidate of change". Why the media never questioned the McCain campaign's abrupt change in theme 60 days prior to the election is hilarious.

The tragic events of Hurricanes Katrina, Gustav, and Ike are just examples of Global Warming and why America needs to change the failed policies of the last 8 years, and start planning for our country's long-term future. Senator Obama has strongly supported reducing America's dependence on foreign oil and investing in our growing renewable enregy industires here at home. McCain, on the other hand, supports oil corporations (who have made record-breaking profits and pay little income tax), voted against tax-breaks for America's developing Alternative Fuel industries, and has proposed more off-shore drilling in Flordia and California. We need new leadership in Washington, not the old ideology of John Sydney McCain III. Most Americans don't have 7 homes and 7 utility bills to pay……

In choosing someone who is CLEARLY not ready for the Presidency, John McCain's judgment and his giving over his campaign to George Bush's advisors, INDEPENDENTS and RESPONSIBLE REPUBLICANS should shift their allegiance to BARAK OBAMA.

Singh   September 13th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

Several years ago when McCain was opposing Bush for republican nomination, I found that he was a good honest man. But now I am appalled that how dishonest he has become. He has become a serial liar. Bush lied to the nation and we are in a pit now, if another liar in the person of John McCain occupies the white house, our nation will be in such a deep pit that it will take long to come out both morally and financially.

Sarah Palin boasts her faith every occcasion she gets. Any parent of faith must raise chldren to be resposible and moral. Ms Palin has failed as mother, her unmarried daughter of 16 is pregnant. Together McCain and Palin are setting example of hypocracy and lying. Hope that God will save America from the Calamity of McCain and Palin.

John McNut, you are the one who has been telling all the lies, you are the one who has been running a nasty campaign….aren't you big enough to own up to it?????….You were the one whining that Obama wouldn't do the hall town meetings with you and ever since you have turned to the spoiled brat child that is saying, if you don't come out and play with me, I'm going to get you back…..You are being nothing more than an attitude of a middle school bully….

As a former Hillary supporter and let me tell you I was not going to vote for Obama, I was going to stay home, but these last few weeks have given me a whole new focus. I will not only vote for Obama, I am sending him cash and I will be making calls at a call center later this week to get the youth out to vote. McCain has to be stopped. He is disgusting. All the respect I had for him is gone and I want nothing else but to see him and his Hillary "want-to-be" go down in flames.
I advise the rest of you former Hillary supporters to do the same. Enough is enough! Obama may not be perfect, but at least he can hold his head high when this election is over. McCain has become McSlim

I urge Senator Obama to continue his campaign even with Hurrican Ike. I evacuated for Hurricane Ike and have just learned my house sustained damage. But, this Presidential election is far more important than my house damage. My house can be fixed, but our our country is on the verge of permanent damage from the Republicans. Time for change!

redwhiteblue   September 13th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

There is something very wrong with these polls. From the very beginning, Obama has gotten record crowds of people coming to see and hear him. No bump in the polls. He went overseas and looked and acted very presidential and no bump.He has given intelligent and interesting speeches. No bump.McCain was so disliked by his own party that they were told to vote for Hillary.
The polls do say that Joe Biden is much more qualified than Palin and that Palin could become president soon. Still no bump. That scares the hell out of me.The "in the dark" Palin doesn't sound to me like she's qualified.
Why were we so anxious to impeach Bush? McCain brags that he voted with Bush 90% of the time. You liked the last 8 years? The Democrats have the best candidates in years. Something is wrong. I think we again are about to have an election stolen from us!!!

Tomorrow morning, Christians, when you are deep in prayer at church, silently ask your creator to reconsider the "Hell Thing." Because when you back a political party where they lie k-n-o-w-i-n-g-l-y (and you know it too) YOU are just a guilty and will burn beside them.

ken   September 13th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I agree with Barack's spokesman that McCain is "running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.” But it does not surprise me. He has no honor.

With in approximately 72 hours of being captured by the North Vietnamese he was giving statements to enemy. Granted he was in great pain, but a lot of americans who were captured were in great pain but only amount 33% gave statements to enemy.

Also, instead of having the courage to face his wife, who waited for him during his time with the viet cong, and tell her he was unhappy and wanted a divorcee he just went out and had affairs. That too is dishonorable.

I believe, McShame at his core, is a dishonorable man.

same in policy as the person running for the president . Believe
we all know that, Palin may not agree with every thing that McCain

also. Sure Clinton and Gore did not agree on every thing either.
So believe your piece was rather silly.

How hypocritical of the McCain campaign to say that Obama has sunk to a new low. Even at his worst, Obama is far more honest than lying John McCain and his nastiest campaign in history. I also want to know if anyone on your panel is old enough to remember the back ally abortions? how young girls and women tried to self abort when they had no alternative? do you remember storys of women bleeding to death, and half aborted babys past three months? do you remeber how the damage on botched abortions caused women to suffer lack of blood and oxegon, and some ended up brain dead? do you remember how the rich was able to go alse where to get theirs and the poor had to do it at the hands of the less qualified, and sometimes med students who didn't know all they should know to do it. how some was sent home to bleed to death. How black america suffered the worse with botched abortions, and self imposed abortions! Hmm, I've been watching nothing but sleezy ads full of half-truths and distortions from the McCain campaign running nonstop on all the major networks for the last 2 days. When Obama finally speaks out against them, it's "zero restraint" and a "new low".

Give us a break, please. Does McCain have the crew for the Jerry Springer show running his campaign now? It sure seems like it; put up a circus sideshow for distraction and ignore reality completely.

These are the "new mavericks"? Seems like the same old right-wing crap.

Mandy   September 13th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

"The McCain campaign criticized Obama for showing “zero restraint” given the storm and said “today’s attacks mark a new low from Barack Obama.”

The Obama camp’s response was even tougher. “We will take no lectures from John McCain who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today. He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.”'

AMERICANS WILL SEE THROUGH MCCAIN AND COMPANY'S LIES, SMEARS, DILLUSIONS, MISREPRESENTATIONS AND WILL REALIZE THEY DO IT BECAUSE MCCAIN DID NOT AND DOES NOT HAVE THE SUBSTANCE TO RUN A CAMPAIGN PURELY ON HIS STANCE ON THIS ISSUES! “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history."

That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Obama's campaign has been at least as unfair as McCain's. I say this as someone voting for neither of them.

Sarah L., Fayetteville, AR   September 13th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

McCain is running a dishonorable campaign. I used to respect Senator McCain and thought he would be different considering what Bush did to him in 2000. Unfortunately, he's done the same if not worse to Obama–ultimately doing a real disservice to the country he claims to love so much.

Mike, Syracuse NY   September 13th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

What a hypocrit. When Obama 'warned' against going into Iraq, he was a virtually unknown IL State Senator, without access to any of the intelligence. He also admitted that if he had been in the US Senate, he couldn't say how he would have voted. 29 Democratic senators voted to authorize the war, including his VP pick Biden, as well as Edwards and Clinton. It's easy to be a Monday morning QB. He also opposed the surge, which worked dramatically.

Nasty hypocrite.

Chris, Antioch, CA   September 13th, 2008 1:39 pm ET

Good for Obama. There's not enough time to sit back and wait out Hurricane season when the needs of our country are so glaring. And he's right about McCain's strategy.

The GOP have been enacting a three-part plan:
1. make as many voters as possible low-info voters by not talking about any issues, 2. play the victim card when they can to manipulate emotions in these voters (ie the Palin pick), and 3. claim over and over again that the Dems don't get the Heartland

All of this is devious, cynical, and of course BS. Republicans are intolerant, greed-driven racists. Their leadership doesn't give a crap about America, only in profiteering from the privilege of power and government. It's so obvious: McCain's entire staff are lobbyists. I'm so sick of this. LOOK PAST THEIR LIES!

She accuses Hillary of whining and then applauds her after she was named VP picked. She opposed things behind closed doors but changes story in front of the camera.

McCain spewed out enough "Lies" to last through the next week so he could take time off. He's very old and needs his rest.

His "Lies" are going to catch up with him. There has to be at least a few Repubs out there that believe in telling the truth.

Amir, DC   September 13th, 2008 1:32 pm ET

Unfortunately, that is the way to win. Obama cannot win just by focusing on the issues. He has to go as low as Mccain does. It is ironic how the American mentality works; "The lower you get, the higher you are in the Polls". Mccain lied his way to the top of the polls with his low express ride.

I was hoping that Mccain, who suffered from smear attacks before by the hands of the president whom he voted with 90% afterwards, would ran a worthy campaign, as he pledged to. That is not the case.

I hate to see Obama distracted from the issue into personal attacks, but this seems to be his only way to win.

Independent   September 13th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Unfortunately, America has to choose one of these two. They both don't deserve it.

Elizabeth   September 13th, 2008 1:30 pm ET

I am so proud of Obama. He is not being negative, Obama is being honest and we know it. McCain has one of the worst most dishonorable campaigns I've seen in a long time. As a woman, it was a slap in the fact to pick Palin because it was a gimmick. I felt bad for Palin on the interview with Gibson, because she is clearly not ready. They throw Palin out there for bait knowing that she is unprepared.

Obama/Biden from Texas!

Bill Tampa   September 13th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

Yes, that's what I'm talking about, way to fight back Barack!!!!!..Let'em have both barrels..give'em a taste of their own medicine.!!!!!!

jim   September 13th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

right on abama .give them straight talk

Erica   September 13th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

McCain did the View AND Rachael Ray and he has the nerve to criticize Obama for doing a rally in New Hampshire? He's just mad that he can't pull supporters without his puppet Palin by his side and knows he never intended to rally without her in the first place.
He is desperate and afraid that since the polls are evening out to a dead heat again that he has a real chance at losing the election. Play fair McCain. And don't be a sore loser when they announce the new President and its not you.

Obama needs to start lying like John McCain   September 13th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

John McCain and President Bush threw a Birthday party during Katrina for John McCain. Bush failed to show up for days along with lack of responds for the Federal Goverment. Bush and McCain should be indicted for allowing hunderds of people to die after a storm in New Orleans-A major American City. They have No right to say Obama is on a New low because he is holding Campaign meetings about the storm that have been planed. John McCain and his campaign released an ad today attacking and lying about Obama's recorded on Immigration in the battle ground states………I wish John McCain would just stop lying…

Obama needs to start lying it works sometimes.

Republican Turned Democrat   September 13th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

Are you kidding me??? The McSame campaign is running the lowest, dirtiest campaign I have seen in years. Therefore, I have no choice but to go with the person who has talked about helping me with the worst economy in my time…

Obama/Biden '08

David Virginia   September 13th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

We're not flakes Axelrod, we'll stay and endure just like Barack has done the last year in this election. But, we do have strong concern for this country and the FUTURE which must be in order to keep it from falling to pieces.

Obamiden 08 … It's time to slam McCain to the floor for his wrongdoing.

Dexter   September 13th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Good for Obama!

MW   September 13th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Yep – Sleazy pretty much sums it up.

davo   September 13th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Vice-President candidate Sarah Palin was a Mayor and is the Govenor of Alaska. What are the duties and responsibilities of those offices? Her Duties include getting grants and ear marks if BARAK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN KEEP VOTING FOR THEM . As a candidate for govenor she was for the bridge to no where; what candidate would turn down 225million dollars that BARAK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN VOTED TO GIVE THEM. When it turned into a joke Govenor Palin said, “we don’t want the bridge,” BARAK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN TOOK BACK THE MONEY.

THERE WAS A BILL TO GIVE THE 225 MILLION TO THE KATRINA EFFORT. BARAK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN VOTED NO NO.

The U.S. Senate voted to give the State of Alaska 225million dollars in addition to their regular highway funds, BARAK OBAMA and JOE BIDEN VOTED FOR THIS.

The question is what kind of change are BARAK OBAMA and JOE BIDEN going bring to America; what they say they will do, or what they have done in the past?

Why McCain   September 13th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

McCain does not want to discuss the issues. He want to attack, be negative and destract.

What are you going to do as President Mr Mcain?

Why should I vote for you?

Are you going to bring my brother home from an unjustified war?
Are you going to establish a healthcare system the gives healthcare to ALL people. Why is healthcare only a privilege and not a right?
Are you going to fix the public school systems so that my children can go to school in our neighborhood, instead of across town to a neighborhood in which they are not welcomed?
Are you going to protect womans rights? What about civil rights?
Are our gay brothers and sisters going to be treated fairly under your adminstration?

What are you going to do to decrease violence in the inner cities, where I live?

You nor Palin speak to me. It seems that you will uphold the same system that has lead us down this road.

mb--texas   September 13th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

The future of our country usimg positive thinking(until some mudslinging by McCain gang) our country will benefit when Obam-Biden are elected in Nov.Obama camp keep hitting back when
needed.

Brian   September 13th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

It is appearing that McCain's only claim to honor is being a POW for five years … everything else is just sleaze

Felines for Freedom   September 13th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

So if Obama has reached "a new low "for attacking McCain the day after Ike, how does McCain's campaign stating Obama reached a new low compute? Come on McCain….we aren't morons. If you counter-attack, you place yourself at the same level. Didn't your mommy teach you that basic stuff? Or can you not remember the dark ages?

On another note, as a South Floridian and News Orleans resident, I am intimately familiar with the devastation of hurricanes and my thoughts are with everyone in Texas and the surrounding affected areas. Good luck….stay strong.

Sue, NY   September 13th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

McCain is so dishonorable and has lost all integrity…he will do anything to win….not the kind of president I want.

Independent Dave   September 13th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Go get em!

Focus on issues and McCains continuation of Bush policies!

cecil   September 13th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

John McCain of “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”

Amen Sen.

No Shame In There Game, They'll Do And Say Anything!

kn   September 13th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

I for one am so sick of the Slime McCain is throwing, Now his running mate is also throwing it. I hope Obama wipes the floor with McCain and Palin.

Rob R   September 13th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

You know, I think everyone certainlly is hoping for the best down in Texas. But the country cannot come to a complete stand still because a storm is affecting 1 state. I think everyone is so sensitive given Katrina that now every hurricane has to be treated as a day when the world stops. The govermnemt seems to have learned its lesson and is better prepared for these storms, so let FEMA and the local first reponsders do their jobs. It shouldn't affect Obama campaigning in New Hampshire.

I mean what is John McCain going to do about the hurricane anyway?

Breck   September 13th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

As usual, McCain whines about issues actually being addressed.

Rob   September 13th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

McCain will say do anything to win an election even forgetting the people that he is hoping to lead. what happened to honor John? His excuse for running this sleazy noise filled campaign is because Obama wouldn't do townhalls? If anyone believes that he wouldn't have gone Karl Rove anyway I've got a bridge to no-where – cheap… check ebay.

4Obama   September 13th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

McCain team has no moral standing to voice their opinon about anything that Obama says. Obama has a donate section up on his site for texas.

holyman   September 13th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

As we can see Mccain will lie and do anything to win . He cannot be trusted with our future.

Obama……….08

DebM, Allentown, PA   September 13th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

McCain has lost any honor and integrity he may have had as little as 4 years ago. He has sold his soul to the devil, in the person of Karl Rove, in his last ditch effort to attain the presidency.

For McCain's camp to suggest that BO is low is pathetic, and almost laughable.

Dylan   September 13th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

YEAH! stick it to them Obama. Don't let them paint you as dishonorable, they're the ones who have embraced Rovian tactics. The Mccain of 2000 would be ashamed of the Mccain of 2008. Don't let them off the hook, stay on the attack.

jill   September 13th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

a new low for obama would still be 1000 feet above mccain's high mark.

Republican Woman For Obama   September 13th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

“We will take no lectures from John McCain who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today. He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.”

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT! They are such hypocrites! Jeezzz! Lord help us all!

jed   September 13th, 2008 1:17 pm ET

this so called "new low" is still miles above McCain's constant low.

bob   September 13th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

You couldn't get a job at McDonalds and become
district manager after 143 days of experience.

You couldn't become chief of surgery after 143
days of experience of being a surgeon.

You couldn't get a job as a teacher and be the
superintendent after 143 days of experience.

You couldn't join the military and become a
colonel after a 143 days of experience.

You couldn't get a job as a reporter and become
the nightly news anchor after 143 days of experience.

BUT….

From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a
United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming
a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days
of experience in the Senate. That's how many days
the Senate was actually in session and working.

After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be
Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World …. 143
days.

We all have to start somewhere. The senate is a good
start, but after 143 days, that's all it is – a start.
AND, strangely, a large sector of the American public
is okay with this and campaigning for him. We
wouldn't accept this in our own line of work, yet some are okay
with this for the President of the United States of
America?

Come on folks, we are not voting for the next American Idol!

Bill   September 13th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

wale azeez   September 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

The mccain campaign is getting used to eating their cake and having it….during gustav they held their failed convention all through…sarah palin is campaigning today and yet they come out to critic obama for holding a low key event on the future of our nation

Voting for Original Change   September 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

What does the storm have to do with the election….Hurricans Gustav, Hannah and Ike havent keep the McCain campaign from spreading lies and smears, from hiding their VP pick behind scripted interviews and not offering the country any solid plans or policies for our future besides that tired old mantra "maverick reformer"….give America a break McLying Bush and drop out of the race

Sue in MI   September 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

McCain needs to take a long hard look at the slimy campaign he and his running mate are conducting. He promised not to do this, and that is the first promise he broke to the American people. Obama has been nothing but a gentleman to Palin, and gets slammed for things he didn't say every day. America is wise to this garbage, and if McCain doesn't want to see his poll numbers drop daily, he'd better get on the high road and talk issues. And if he blames Obama for the tenor of this campaign one more time ("if Senator Obama had agreed to do the town hall meetings with me, I don't think the campaign would be this bitter") I will not listen to him ever again. This from the guy who started the hatred, who approved his party's horrible, degrading, angry convention culminating in Palin's vitriol. Straight talk, my foot. You are reaching no one in a positive way, MY FRIEND, and I think even some moderate Republicans are sick of it.

bk   September 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

There goes Obama talking about having a debate and he has turned every town hall meeting down. Obama is all talk and no substance. He is afraid to debate McCain.

Maggie VT   September 13th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I don't think you can get any lower that John McCain and the lobbyist who run his campaign

Stephy   September 13th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Thats right Obama, No more Mr. nice Guy. McCain has ran a sleazy campaign for weeks now. sometimes you have to fight fire with fire.

Big D   September 13th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

So McCain thinks that Obama can't campaign to a crowd in NH because of an approaching hurricane in the Gulf coast?!? I agree that Obama doesn't need to be lectured by McCain, especially after the disgraceful and dishonorable way that McCain has been leading his campaign lately. I would say that the Obama team's response was overdone and hyperbole though. But McCain sure has shown that he has no concerns with lying, and then repeating debunked lies, and running a campaign without integrity.

Rachel Reeves   September 13th, 2008 1:12 pm ET

Go Obama Go!

Let the people know exactly who Mc Cain & Palin really are!

You have to fight the Republican lies and half truths. Dont go easy on Palin just because she's a hockey Mom. No one went easy on Hillary.

Rachel Reeves

I attended the rally. There were thousands in attendance. Many people I spoke traveled up from MA.

He laid out specific policy differences between his platform and that of his republican rival. There was much enthusiasm in the air. Let's hope people are listening to substance and not smear.

No Hillary = No Obama   September 13th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

Obama is a loser. Had he picked Hillary as his VP – he would be President. Not any more. Jerk.

mitchell   September 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

obama camp is hitting back, hard, finally. mccain/palin lies will backfire on them. truth and the obama way will overcome on nov. 4th.

Lawrence for barack   September 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

its not on your time mcsame, this is politic

Melvin   September 13th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

MCCAIN WOULD RATHER LOSE HIS INTEGRITY THAN LOSE AN ELECTION!

Undecided   September 13th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

I think that the hurricane highlights the need to talk about the issues.

This election is important, and I think the people in Houston would want us to continue a debate about the issues.

That is the whole lesson we need to learn: government shouldn't stop working in a time of crisis, it should start to work better.

I applaud Obama's campaign.

Paul   September 13th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

This is news I bet even for the "Clinton News Network"

Palin troopergate timeline…and her lack of judgement.

Sarah "Follow Americans Lend me Your Ear-marks" Palin

Long before this became an issue for Sarah…in 2005 she should have seen this was not a fight she should take on….But as she gained more and more power she took it unpon herself to do things she will regret.

Sarah where is your "Judgement"…this is going to bite her…she was told by members of her own party how to handle this issue and she of course wouldn't listen. Must of us would have listened and moved on with our lives after these warnings:

Judge Suddock (A republican) was disturbed by the alleged attacks by Palin and her family members on Wooten's behavior and character. "Disparaging will not be tolerated—it is a form of child abuse," the judge told a settlement hearing in October 2005.

Did she listen…NO

In the letter, July 14th, 2008, written before Sen. John McCain picked the Alaska governor as his running mate, former U.S. Attorney Wevley Shea (A republican) warned Gov. Palin that “the situation is now grave” and recommended that she and her husband, Todd Palin, apologize for “overreaching or perceived overreaching” for using her position to try to get Trooper Mike Wooten fired from the force.

Did she listen…No

July 18th 2008…Palin says. in a statement…"To allege that I, or any member of my family, requested, received or released confidential personnel information on an Alaska State Trooper, or directed disciplinary action be taken against any employee of the Department of Public Safety, is, quite simply, outrageous,"

“Hold me accountable,” she challenge her critics.

she denied orchestrating any calls.

Then on August 13th 2008…

In a recorded conversation, Bailey (a Palin Staffer) is heard saying: “Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads, why on earth hasn't, why is this guy still representing the department? He's a horrible recruiting tool. … You know, I mean from their perspective, everyone's protecting him.”

Sarah comes out that day to tell us and says "I do now have to tell Alaskans that such pressure could have been perceived to exist although I have only now become aware of it," After 26 known call and untold e-mails…she still tries to cover up…instead of apologizing she goes on to say.

"Many of these inquiries were completely appropriate. However, the serial nature of the contacts could be perceived as some kind of pressure, presumably at my direction,"

Gov. Palin pledged the full cooperation of herself and her staff

After all this the cat is out of the bag…

Bailey's lawyer Greg Grebe had kept Bailey from meeting Branchflower who was hired by the Republican legislature to "investigate the circumstances and events surrounding the termination of former Public Safety Commissioner Monegan"

Now the evil liberals are out to get Sarah…

When the truth of the matter is

Sarah is out to get Sarah and so far she is doing a pretty good job.

She has lost my vote.

Tony   September 13th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

The ignorance and apathy of women across America, especially white women who vote republican, is pathetic and so very sad.

To think that women have fought to come so far and with this election, should McCain and Palin win, they will have taken a GIGANTIC leap BACKWARDS.

For anyone who witnessed the Palin interviews, and the story done on her on ABC's 20/20 program, there should be NO DOUBT in ayone's mind, at least those that are able to think for themselves, that this woman could not be any more unprepared for either the 2nd most powerful position, and possibly the most powerful, in the country.

America is slowly becoming like a third-world country in their thinking. People who vote strictly party, even if they believe their candidatse are not best for the country or Americans, are pathetic.

For any women voting McCain-Palin in November, DO NOT say that you put your familes, your children or your COUNTRY FIRST. McCain and Palin have made COUNTRY FIRST no more than just words.
