McCain ad slams Obama, Senate Democrats on immigration

New McCain ad blames Obama and Democrats for death of immigration overhaul effort.

New McCain ad blames Obama and Democrats for death of immigration overhaul effort.

(CNN) -
John McCain’s campaign is running a Spanish language ad in battleground states that blames Barack Obama and Senate Democrats for the failure of attempts to overhaul the nation’s immigration laws - even though the Republican nominee and his Democratic counterpart cast identical votes in the key Senate showdowns on that issue last year

“Obama and his congressional allies say they are on the side of immigrants. But are they?” asks the announcer in the 30-second spot, “Which Side Are They On?”

“The press reports that their efforts were 'poison pills' that made immigration reform fail,” he continues. “The result: No guest worker program. No path to citizenship. No secure borders. No reform. Is that being on our side? Obama and his Congressional allies ready to block immigration reform, but not ready to lead.”

But Obama and McCain cast identical votes in the major congressional showdowns on the issue last year. Both men cast votes in favor of an unsuccessful early June effort to end a filibuster. Later that month, they voted again to end debate on the issue – but again failed to shut down the filibuster effort, led for the most part by Republican senators.

The ad will air in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada, all crucial fall states with significant Hispanic voting populations.

The direction this election is taking is frightening. McCain's strategy is to spread lies about Obama, switch positions to whatever is popular and claim to have held that position all along (Palin is even worse..."I supported the Bridge to Nowhere, before I was against it"), and pander to women by selecting an unqualified female running mate.

What's worse – Americans are eating it right up. Most of the voters in this country ought to be ashamed of themselves. Time and again, I see interviews of citizens who just spew out whatever headline they heard on the news that night, without making any attempt at comprehending the issues this country faces and without doing any type of independent research to see if what they've been fed from the news is accurate.

If we are going to be honest, Immigration issue can only be accomplished with democrats and Barack Obama if he wins the Presidence. I doubt Mccain will do any thig about this subject because he will always fear his Republican constituences. Therefore, the ad is wrong and the spanish voters are not children and they know who is for them.

Just another example of the lies and half-truths being spread by McCain. Nothing but a distraction!

I guess it's more important for McCain to win the election by lying than by running an honest campaign. Where's the honor in lying? If he was still in the Naval Academy he'd be expelled. He must have forgotten the code of honor. So much for country first. It's McCain first and country last. Can we really afford to have someone like this in the White House?

It just aggrivate's me that some people still believe the campaign after all the lies the republican trash has put into their commercials, I cannot believe the media allows such lies without hammering on them for that, in this century! What the hell happened to JOURNALISM!!!

"even though the Republican nominee and his Democratic counterpart cast identical votes in the key Senate showdowns on that issue last year."

What a hypocrite, but that is par for the course, for I believe that mindless rightwingers will agree with him, even though he voted the same as Obama.

    Weak minds are easily manipulated.

Looks to me like these ads are beginning to backfire on McCain. The lead he had 7-10 days ago has all but evaporated. I think the American people are paying attention to this election, and are tired of misleading ads and outright lies by the McCain camp and it's begining to show up in the polls.

It's not nice to know that ads like this will make it on TV and despite it being yet another half truth, the target audience isn't very likely to find this out.

It is good that you are mentioning this in the article, the truth, but there has to be something more you can do in this day and age than allow commercials with lies to be's not right...

McCain is a liar and so is Pailin. Obama better hit back and hit back hard, because as the polls show voters don't care what is best for them or the facts. The truth about McCain and Palin is far worst than any lie on Obama.

I am so mad at how the media has played this. Beck and Bigot Hannity tear down Mrs. Obama, but keep praise to Palin whose husband does not even want to be an American. They want to talk about Rev. Wright but doesn't speak on Palina's preacher.
Let's be real if you don't like Obama because you READ his policies and you prefer McCain's great. But if you hate Obama because of Clinton, the lies about is faith, or lies about flags...the real reason is his color. It's easy to blog hate, go talk to people that don't look like you in person about your Obama hate.

I have really been fighting posting in any type of forum in regards to these elections. I am an independent by choice. Republican's are out of touch with the "real" world, and Democrat's have no spine to take a real stand and say "This is what I believe, deal with it". However with that being said, I really am totally disappointed with McCain and his whole campaign. I use to like McCain, but I am finding I am waiting for the real McCain to stand up, but alas I do not think he exists anymore. I mean I know there have been lies on both sides as well as some out of context information. As of late it seems as if McCain has this “I will get into office by hook or crook” attitude. It is bad when you read an article now and in the first paragraph they already say this is a lie, we have already investigated it and deemed it to be false. I am really disgusted with the republican’s as a whole. The hypocrisy has become too much. Being a Veteran I will say this. This year it is all about patriotism and serving our country, but I remember the last election the systematic destruction of another Veteran (John Kerry). I am beginning to see that there are no solutions on the current Republican side on how to fix any of the problems going on besides the true “business as usual”. Since they have no answers they have decided to take the tactic of “See this is why he isn’t a good choice”, “He opposes this, and that”, “He is sexist, inexperienced, rockstar, liberal who will give your rights away to the enemy”, so this is why you want to vote for me.

So, to John McCain I would personally like to say thank you for helping me make up my mind. You Sir will NOT be receiving my vote this year!

WOW – we have 54 more days of this!

The ABC interview – GOV Palin did a gret job – in spite of Charlie – he was arrogant – his tone was downright mean.

SHE is a U.S. GOV – show some respect Charlie.
ABC – NOT fair reporting – NOT accurate Facts.

wow. Who is Mccain trying to pander to now? How will this sit with his anti-immigrant "base"? This from the same guy who said he would vote AGAINST his own immigration reform bill if it came up again.

Where is Palin's interview with Gibson???

No sane American or European leader would ever ever ever give an answer like that. You do not get into hypotheticals about nuclear war. You just don't. Palin references the Cold War. The only reason the Cold War stayed cold is because our leaders understood the stakes of getting things wrong and saying things that could lead to catastrophic nuclear war. During the Cuban Missile Crisis every word, every public statement, and any message that the Kennedy administration sent to the Soviets was checked, double checked, and triple checked to make sure it was sending precisely the right signal. This is what you are forced to do when you have thousands of nuclear weapons and so does your opponent. The stakes are simply too high. And yet there is a nominee for the vice presidency of the United States who may one day have her hand on the button and she is casually talking about potential catastrophic nuclear war.

More crap from the GOP. If you want war and more debt, vote Republican. If you want freedom, solutions and a real shot at prosperity for all, vote Democrat. It's that simple.
