Obama campaign confirms they raised $66 million in August

Obama set a new fundraising record in August.
Obama set a new fundraising record in August.

(CNN) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign raised $66 million in August, the campaign announced Sunday, topping its previous high mark and running well ahead of Obama's Republican rival.

The Obama campaign said more than half a million new donors contributed during the month, when the Illinois senator accepted the Democratic presidential nomination and named Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware as his running mate. The campaign had more than $77 million cash on hand at the end of August, compared with about $66 million in July.

Obama's previous monthly donation record of $55 million came in February, during his primary battle with New York senator and former first lady Hillary Clinton.

Earlier this month, the campaign of GOP presidential nominee John McCain reported raising $47 million in August. That haul also set a monthly record for the Arizona senator, whose campaign says it received a financial shot in the arm after McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to join the ticket.

McCain has accepted federal matching funds for his general election campaign, giving him $84 million to spend for November. The money comes with strict spending limits, but the Republican National Committee's Victory fund can continue to raise and spend money on his behalf.

Obama has rejected public financing, calling the system "broken" - a decision that frees him to continue raising money for November.

Tim, Sarah and the rest of you McSamers...

Timyou said that Obama made fun of McCain's war injuries. When and Where did he say that? Tim you are probably one of McCain's surrogates who make up lies and hope that some people will believe it. ENOUGH! Sarah, McCain has no more honor. His honor was left in Vietnam 40 years ago. Try looking in the dictionary and define honor. Liar, hypocrit, adulteress, one who sink to the lowest pits of hell to win an election? No honor there! We cannot put this curse on our country again!

I proudly made my first donation to the campaign last week and I can honestly say that the McCain – Biden three ring circus called the Republican National convention MADE me want to contribute. I pray that America wakes up from their drug induced state and realizes that the only thing McCain and Palin often is more of the same. And, as a woman, I am insulted that other women are falling for this ticket. The only thing McCain and Palin care about is their own agendas, while, Obaman and Biden truly believe in America and putting it back on its feet.

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN, NO PALIN

WML you have to remember Democrats yet to have total control of the Senate because the tie breaker in all of this happens to be TURNCOAT JOE..

So we can blame Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid but that would not be right because they cannot do it by themselves and with this IDIOTIC President who is all too swift to VETO things he knows nothing about I don't see any change on the horizon until we get a new Administration in office..

I have to say the same as some others above WAKE UP PEOPLE the REPUBLICANS have nothing to offer but more RHETORIC, TAX break for the RICH and BIG CORPORATIONS who ship AMERICAN jobs overseas.

Obama have great ideals, but to give you GOP specifics, just so you can steal his ideals to twist and turn it to try and make it your own. NO he is not going to give you specifics. We Obama supports understand that and have trust in our canidate.

Do you have trust in yourS with all the lies they have been telling over and over again. You people know nothing about this Gov. Palin. below is a little story for you GOP idiots.

A stranger knock on my door and I answer.

The stranger said, May I come in and run your household.

I asked for the stranger experience.

The stranger presented me with a resume that read.

    I hunt, I can skin a caribou. I sold a jet on e-bay.

I told congress no thanks to the bridge, while funds in hand.

The different between me and a pit-bull is lipstick.

After reading over the resume and checking the truthfulness.

    I found the following.

Hunting want stop my home from being foreclosed on.

Skinning a caribou want give me a job.

Selling the jet on e-bay was a lie.

No thanks to the bridge was a lie and the stranger kept millions in
    funds without returning the funds.

The pit-bull was really a wolf in sheep clothing.

I know you can relate to this story. So my answer to the stranger.

NO THANK YOU! NOT THIS TIME.

This story is in reference to Sarah Palin.

    NOT THIS TIME! Obama/biden 08

Your canidtate McCain voted again women equal pay, but yet he wants to hide behind a women SKIRT! GIVE US A BREAK ON THIS IDIOT!

    I WILL SAY IT AGAIN.

JUST FOR YOU PEOPLE WHO KEEP SAYING OBAMA IS NOT READY TO LEAD. TAKE HEED OF THE BELOW:

The republican party have no ideals of their own. But yet they continue to bash Obama.
If you watched the RNC convention. You should have notice, they took (STOLE) all of Baracks ideals and talking points. They implemented (STOLE) everything from the DNC convention with a twist and turn, but still could not top the DNC. American, please DO NOT be fooled by the RNC Karl Rove tactic. This race is about our children's future and American.

McCain offer up no real solutions to the American people, yet riding on the coat-tail of Barack Obama. They say Barack can't lead, but McCain is study following Barracks lead. Q: WHO IS THE LEADER? McCain plays on the sympathy vote. Though they claim McCain's service is commendable (questionable). We were flooded with the POW story every single night. McCain even went so far as to say in his speech. It doesn't matter who came up with the ideal (CHANGE). What he was say in this statement was I STOLE your message of change, and you can't do anything about it.
Here we have the out and out right lying republicans. That introduce the american people to an unknown Gov. Palin, which is under all kinds of investigation. They don't want the media to interview her. Why? Because they are running out of campaign funds and want to use the media as free advertisement. How the media is fallen for this garbage is beyond me.

The media should vett Gov. Palin, just as they did with every other candidate. As she had the nerve to challenge the media. Who do she thing she is? The RNC main objective is to play the sexism card. We need to know what make her so different. They hound the heck out of Barack Obama for over 18 mos. She is running for the 2nd highest office in the nation and the American people have every right to know who she is and want makes her tick and her views on all the issue. With that said, I don't know how so many people who claim to be so educationed can buy into this garbage that the republicans are trying to sale.

The media should dig into her back ground hard and heavy and should not drag their feet. They owe it to the American people. I do agree her children have nothing to do with the issue.
My question to you the American people. When you have a chance to choose an original. Are you going to pick the copy? I don't think so.

    NOT THIS TIME.

NO WAY, NO HOW, NO MCCAIN/MCPALIN! GO DEMS.

It says alot about these men. One, would rather win an election and lose his honor, while the other would rather lose an election than lose his honor. John McCain has become a walking talking shell of George Bush- if he is lying like this before he becomes president,God help us the lies he will tell us if he becomes president.

Congradulations !!! 66 Million to the TRUTH campaign.I am Canadian and if I could send Obama money I would do it !! He is the most refreshing thing to happen in politics period !! McCain Palin on the other hand have set the records for sleaze and lies. McCain campaign campaign reminds me of a little show called Seinfeld which of course a "show about nothing" and McCain campaign is 100% a "campaign about nothing but lies".The difference would be any character on Seinfeld would make a better VP the the outright liar Palin. It has had Canadians laughing since she was picked but now this is getting serious. If McCain Palin were elected it would say those who lied and cheat the most can be President of America. The international view would be disaterous if these liars were in the Whitehouse. With the international at an all time low a McCain win would drop that even further.Canada as well as many allies need America to do the right thing for everyones future so please keep fighting for the Truth !!!

You all do remember this is one of Obama's campaign promises he did not keep.

Obama and McCain both said they would take public funding for the national election.

Palin said she would take us to war with Russia. Enough is enough. These two imbeciles (McCain/Palin) will get us all killed with their stupidity. America cannot afford to put these wack-jobs in the highest office. Luckily, they seem to be entering self-destruct mode anyway.

    OBAMA/BIDEN '08!

    To Sarah McCarthy,

You say Dems denigrate Sen. McCain's military experience and laugh at his war wounds. Much closer to the truth is the fact that Sen. Obama starts any mention of Sen. McCain with "I truly admire and appreciate Sen. McCain's war record and what he's been through." He must say that daily. Yet you go on, as your friends do (see tim, Paul, etc., above, for example), with another distracting lie, exaggeration, anything to take the attention away from issues now facing our country.

Get with it, Sarah and friends. Isn't the way McCain acting now exactly the way we might expect a President McCain to behave? Haven't this nation and the world had enough of misrepresentation, and then having the lack of faith in the American people to set our surrogates (Rumsfeld, Michael "Good Job Brownie" Brown, Rove, on and on) straight?

Count my $100.00 for Obama. I'm a former Hillary supporter and I was going to sit this one out, unitl McCain picked his running mate and I decided I was going to do everything I could to make sure that woman understands that she is not wanted anywhere near the whitehouse. I do believe palin has been Obama's best fundraiser. He should put her on his payroll.

Dear Friends: In response to a message on MSN
The USA will never fall behind. You will not know where or when our brilliance is and how it will excell. If another country is so great get out of here as fast as you can.

One must remember that no tool is all. That from it comes another and another that solve questions and or lead to others. Accidently or planned.
God's given knowledge is not wasted nor not quantitatively present in the American People.
Only ignorance would make such statments as seen above.

The presence of knowledge is in Plato, Socraties, Homor and so many more that followed. IN the mountains of Europe, Poland, USA, and many are wisdom you can only guess of! FEAR is the tool of the guilt and arrogant! God knows who you are! Guilty one the stick is a weapon when used as in Egypt or a snake. In the hands of Moses it was more and that of a shepherd.

The target of NObama campaign and the DNC is $77 million for the month of August, they are SHORT of their target and they're in PANIC. NObama now are threatening their bundlers to produce the money they promise for his campaign, they're not moving.

Would you donate money to a candidate when he's losing especially in electoral map? Only the gullible will do, the wise will hold on to their money.

    Wolf Blitzer,

it is approximately 9:30 am here in Colorado and I just watched your show regarding experience of Senator Obama and Gov. Palin.

First of all McCain is the one who continues to put out negative ads. The press then questions Sen. Obama about McCain's accusations against him. When he responds you say it is Obama.

You never gave the same amount of time to Obama's Sen. Richardson as you have to McCain's people.

Also Sen. Obama is running for President, why are you even mentioning Gov. Palin, who is running for Vice President with Senator Obama. Why don't you put her with Senator Biden who is running for Vice President.

It was Palin who began her campaign speech by trying to compare herself to Senator Hillary Clinton. She is definitely no comparison to Senator Clinton.

You and the other (predominantly male) pundents and announcers are smitten with her so you are trying to turn this race into a farce.

Wolf, she is young and attractive but there are sooo many young and attractive women (for example Michelle Obama) with children. Sarah has family problems in her household that the press has almost glorified her as being qualifed due to these problems in her life.

It is so obvious on most of your shows that you are partial to her. . Keep it FAIR Wolf. Give Senator Obama some credit here. He is the best man for the job running for President, not VlP. Sometimes give him equal time as you do her.

Her name is mentioned much more than either of the other candidates. All you can say for hours is Sarah or Palin.

Give us a break. You should not be so impartial. The Announcers are lifting her up. NOT HER RECORD.

I thought your show was alright before but you are just trying to get Palin to be president.

Most of the people you have on now are Republican followers, and you know it.

BE FAIR WOLF. PEOPLE SEE ONLY ONE SIDE ON YOUR SHOWS. Also you know exactly what you are doing. AGAIN, BE FAIR WOLF STOP BEING ONE SIDED. IT IS OBVIOUS WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
Palin is running for VP not President. Pit her with Sen. Biden not Sen. Obama.

I'm sure that I am not the only one who feels this way.

I know about ten people who could use a contribution to save their homes from foreclosure.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could help real people by contributing to their need to stay in their homes.

I am so sick of hearing how much Obama raised and how many new people are donating to his campaign.

One fact about the Iraq war that always seems to be forgotten is:

An estimated 100,000 to 500,000 INNOCENT IRAQI CIVILIANS, women, children, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, friends, co-workers . . .

Anyone with a brain should be able to understand why every country on the planet wants a nuclear (no nucular Sarah) weapon to keep us out.

This damage to the balance of power throughout the world will take decades to undo if it is even possible.

For this reason and this reason only the war mongers McCain/Palin should be rejected!

Thank you, CNN, for FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY including one reasonably positive (albeit short) article about Obama amid the insane flurry of media attention to the McCain/Palin ticket. Media coverage of this election has sunk to a new low and threatens our democracy itself. Please, CNN, take back your position of leadership in the media world, and get back to the fair and serious reporting. This coverage of the election as if it were the Jerry Springer Show is appalling and will destroy the country (not to mention that it's giving an unfair advantage to the McCain/Palin ticket) Let's see some coverage of Obama, and especially of Biden, and less coverage of Sarah Palin and her supposed throngs of supporters. Yes, she has raised an army of supporters but there are thousands and even millions of women and men who are opposed to and horrified by her! Please, turn back to the issues to save our country, and to allow our citizenry to decide on the election based on a fair, balanced, and factual array of evidence. Please CNN, heed our pleas!!!!!

I really hope that Obama is going to use the money for negative campain and attacking McCain.
Those with intelligence are already backing him up. What is left is a group of people with no advanced thinking process and no ability to make a decision for their own good. This group will vote for whatever is entertaining. So entertain them by punching McCain. What America needs now is an intelligent, educated, focused and ELITE president. We need it for whatever the price is.

    Good luck
