Palin tweaks stump speech for different audiences

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

CARSON CITY, Nevada (CNN) - Sarah Palin's reputation for rarely deviating from a scripted stump speech as she travels from city to city is not entirely accurate.

She’s open to changing a few lines here and there - depending on the audience.

Consider her speech Saturday in Nevada, site of the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository, a controversial project that would store radioactive waste in Nevadans’ backyard. At nearly every campaign stop over the last two weeks, Palin has touted McCain’s plan to expand nuclear energy, including storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

“In a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to expand nuclear energy, expand our use of alternative fuels, and drill now to make this nation energy independent,” she said to cheers last week in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

But in Carson City, where the Yucca issue hits closer to home, that remark about expanding nuclear energy disappeared.

Palin also gave a pair of modified stump speeches during her recent Welcome Home tour through Alaska that failed to mention the notorious Gravina Island Bridge, subject of her usual applause line on the campaign trail that “I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere."

The Alaska governor routinely cites her opposition to the bridge on the trail to reinforce her reformer reputation, but fact-check groups and the Obama campaign have noted out that Palin supported building the bridge before she came out against it.

Earlier: Palin stays firm on Bridge to Nowhere claim; Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'

At rallies last week in Fairbanks and Anchorage, where Palin's original position in favor of the bridge is well-known, her “thanks but no thanks” was left behind in the Lower 48.

They are really working the flag waving chest thumping crowd, that cry over beer being shipped oversea and want a Spears like Vice president, boy im glad i grew up in a mature setting, i cant even imagine what serious life changing situations these tools missed growing up thatd teach them through whats happening now. In the end only a minority is intelligent, majority is always dragging feet and being apathetic, no surprise there, but lets do our best and get these clowns to wake up, alot of good comments in here, happy to know theres a good chunk of us on the right track. I want to believe we as people arent this stupid, i really do.

If the NEWS MEDIA would just simply drop the Palin spin, she would fade into the background and we could get on with the real issues that are facing this country. Enough, Enough, Enough.

Just listen to all the pundits everyday yelling and screaming over each other...look at the negative ads...I am sick and tired to all of this...NO MORE.

    GET IT, GET IT ......ENOUGH!

You're a liar. Obama has been consistent with his tax policies. It is you and other Republicans who will stop at nothing to keep power. You will lie, you will smear, and you will talk about anything but the issues.

Palin should be held to the same standards as Hillary and other political candidates. She touts herself as equal in every other respect. If she can't stand the heat, she could get out of the kitchen. PLEASE, media, do your part. Don't baby her. No stone should be left unturned re her policies, past, etc. She says she is ready.

Good for Her... she is learning really quickly how Obama has managed to appeal to everyone by tailoring his message...

I mean... refining his position based on new evidence and changing circumstances.

Sarah Palin is very intelligent and has the same right to refine her positions based on new evidence and changing circumstances.

Or is everything Obama used to steal an edge off limits to Palin since she is just a white woman. We have different standards for young up and coming black men. Obama does not even need any prior experience- good move- nothing there to criticize.

Having DONE MUCH, Sarah will have much to scrutinize and criticize.
Playing it safe- voting present- there is no track record or accomplishments to criticize Obama on.

Does anyone even listen to her speeches anymore? She's growing old and the appeal is already wearing off.

Palin didn't learn anything from Obama.

She learned it from Karl Rove.

    She is a quick study.
And as devious a politician as Obama.

Hillary was too nice- she did not want to criticize Obama. Obama had no problem mocking, jeering and belittling Hillary. Obama played foul dirty politics.

I doubt Sarah can be as divisive and evil... but she is quick and bright and actually DOES have a track record. So at least she is a match for the media darling.

The phantom has met his match and she is a beauty.

Whether this election is won or lost by Obama depends a lot on the media now. If the media does not help the average busy and tired American by telling their audience the truth, they could very well believe the lies and misrepresentations of the McCain/Palin campaign.

We need the media to get out the truth and the facts this election. Americans are depending on them, whether they know it or not.

In my view, Mrs. Palin's current family crisis (pregnant daughter, Newborn) is sure to have a pschological impact on the Governor and the family. In addition, her religious views are almost apocalyptic as well.

It will depend if America wants to move away from the Rove years.

Hopefully, McCain, 72, will retire now.

This woman needs to start talking about the issues. The american people deserve to know what she stands for and the media needs to do a better job at questionning this woman views on national security, on the economy and on healthcare. If we don't do it now, later if she gets to the white house it may be too late. we tend to treat the presidential race not as a beauty contest but for what it stands for. With the ever increasing threat from Russia, Iran and Venezuela, we can't afford an inexperienced woman being the vice president with a 72 year old man with some serious health condition as president. The situation is dire. We need to think about this. In the next 4 years, our security threat will be increased with Iran a few step closer of acquirering nuclear weapon, with Russia arming venezuela. THIS IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST!!!!!!!!POST IT CNN

I'm seriously pissed off at the media. Why on earth aren't we hearing more about these lies on the friggin' television? This is pathetic and frankly frightening. I'm pissed! I'm volunteering today to make some calls Nevada, I'll be telling the truth, an entire army will be telling the truth. This woman is a nightmare.

Too many lies from McCain and Palin.

Do any of you really want them setting the "win by lying" example for your kids?

    Simple question.

Enough is Enough, I dont understand guys who think having 10 guns in the house is better than having a job and evangelicals who dont think that poverty is a big issue in America and in the world, somehow they think that if they force each and every woman to give birth even when they have been raped, that will put food on the kitchen table. Enough is Enough, now everytime a bom explodes in Iraq it is reported like local news, so what if they kill each other there, America comes first, Jobs first, School Health etc... The Evangelicals set the agenda for the last 8 years and we have seen the results, we are fed up.

If I were pregnant and leaking fluid, I think the first thought on my mind would be "If I don't get to a hospital now, I might lose this baby." Maybe that was her thought too! Doesn't sound terribly pro-life to me.

  22. Sarah....and my last name isn't Palin

BTW CNN, it is a fact that she is lying about the bridge to nowhere. You are as a media outlet responsible for calling it what it is. A lie... Suggesting that the Obama campaign says is a disingenuous.

    Well, this is NEW...................Not!

Most politicians DO "tweak" their speeches for different audiences.

Barack Obama "tweaked" his speech in California when he talked about people "clinging to" religion and guns in another part of the country. I seriously doubt he would have said that in front of those he was talking about.

    No news here.

When Obama does it it is smart politics and shrewd campaigning.

The pundits even tell Obama how to tailor his message to appeal to lower income white blue collar workers.

They coach Obama on how to reach out to Hillary's women.

    How is that any different?

This woman is a joke! Each day a new story surfaces proving that she lied about yet another thing. The fact that she can see Russia from Alaska does NOT make her an authority in foreign affairs. I do NOT want a PTA member/hockey mom making decisions for the USA in times of crisis! I find it offensive that McCain thinks women are so stupid that we would vote for him just because he added a woman to his ticket. He added a woman who has a questionable past, is under ethics investigation, and lies daily........that to me is not a woman I want to vote for!

Wake up America...the only thing McCain – Palin can do for us is to put us into another misguided war with all their saber rattling. I'm sure after her Gibson interview, Putin is sitting in Russia, laughing at her remarks and thinking oh, yes, bring it on........duh, did she forget that Russia has the power to nuke our brains out!
