Palin tweaks stump speech for different audiences

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.
Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

CARSON CITY, Nevada (CNN) - Sarah Palin's reputation for rarely deviating from a scripted stump speech as she travels from city to city is not entirely accurate.

She’s open to changing a few lines here and there - depending on the audience.

Consider her speech Saturday in Nevada, site of the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository, a controversial project that would store radioactive waste in Nevadans’ backyard. At nearly every campaign stop over the last two weeks, Palin has touted McCain’s plan to expand nuclear energy, including storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

“In a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to expand nuclear energy, expand our use of alternative fuels, and drill now to make this nation energy independent,” she said to cheers last week in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

But in Carson City, where the Yucca issue hits closer to home, that remark about expanding nuclear energy disappeared.

Palin also gave a pair of modified stump speeches during her recent Welcome Home tour through Alaska that failed to mention the notorious Gravina Island Bridge, subject of her usual applause line on the campaign trail that “I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere."

The Alaska governor routinely cites her opposition to the bridge on the trail to reinforce her reformer reputation, but fact-check groups and the Obama campaign have noted out that Palin supported building the bridge before she came out against it.

Earlier: Palin stays firm on Bridge to Nowhere claim; Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'

At rallies last week in Fairbanks and Anchorage, where Palin's original position in favor of the bridge is well-known, her “thanks but no thanks” was left behind in the Lower 48.

Darrell stop drinking the Obama koolaide. He is cutting taxes for 95% but raising corporate, capital gains, and payroll taxes on small business's. who make over 250 and under a million, which more than half work for. They will have lower taxes but no jobs the following year due to lay offs. How is that good for the economy. Even Hillary Clinton said in debate after debate that his plan is not going to work and will bankrupt not only small but larger business's in the long run. You can't rob peter to pay for paul.

McCain will get rid of all earmarks( which by the way Obama has close to a billion since being Senator) and this will help pay for our deficit. As far as helping the rich if you mean McCain cutting taxes on small business and corporations I applaud him. This will enable employers to hire more people, negociate better salaries, and keep our economy going. Health care IMO should be paid for by the employer and that should be mandatory whom ever takes office. As a small business owner we do it and there are enough good plans out there that are affordable and its a benefit that keeps good employee's staying at their jobs.

As far as Gov. Palin do more homework she has helped alot of people in her state. The gas tax credit by the way that Obama supporters laughed at Hillary for proposing worked quite well in Alaska. You Obama supporters better do more homework other than chanting your nominee's name. Of course CNN won't post this because its the truth and pro McCain.

    Ha Ha Ha...too funny

I just heard that McCain was making fun of governors and mayors who had been doing their jobs for just a few years. Example, McCain criticized Mitt Romney. Hmmm, since Romney has MORE experience than Palin, then what does McCain really think about Palin's meak experience.

START SAYING THE TRUTH MCCAIN. YOU HAVE BEEN LYING MORE AND MORE.....now I know why they say McCain sounds more like Bush

  4. Fools for Obama

More double standards to try to bring down a woman:

Obama does that ALL the time- talks one way to San Francisco and another way to evangelicals.

When Obama does it it is smart politics and shrewd campaigning.

The pundits even tell Obama how to tailor his message to appeal to lower income white blue collar workers.

They coach Obama on how to reach out to Hillary's women.

    How is that any different?

Palin and McSame deserve each other! She started lying from Day 1 and he's lying constantly. They will say anything, do anything, regardless of how sleazy to try and trick the people of this country again into voting for them. Judging by Obama's new dollar numbers for August as well as the 500,000 NEW SUPPORTERS in August alone, maybe it's not working. It's time for the mainstream media to "out" mcsame/cheney clone on their daily lies, it's time for all of the people to learn the truth of this nasty team! OBAMA/BIDEN '08

America saw a Leader . Someone who is ready to lead the country.(LOL) Who is not afraid to lie in their face...She reads well and that's about it. She wants to appear tough,...but really doesn't know what she is talking about. She was certainly prepared for this one, but yet exposed her poor knowledge of the world, SAD.
America ! WAKE UP? Bad dream....

McCain is a sick man to have wished to fool the country using Palin as a decoy. A truly sick man, and I am disgusted every time he calls me his friend.

  14. Let's End the Lies

    She was in Iraq/she wasn't.

She was in Ireland/she bought a tshirt at the airport.

She was for the bridge/she was against it.

Check out today's NY Times article that documents all the former high school buds she has hired as the Gov.

Wanna hear that accent all over Washington every night?

I am an 18 year old college student in Madison (and a Republican), but if I ever catch wind of Palin appearing here, I will be one of the protesters. How can she think the public is this stupid? One thing is for sure: the mainstream media sure is.

I have a great idea. Why don't we take our nuclear waste to Alaska? Once they kill off all the wolves and the elk die from starvation because of overpopulation, there won't be any wildlife to worry about. I bet Palin could get some money out of the feds for it.

What about the issues. Why do people come to hear her speak and she says the same thing we have seen her say since we met her. I don't understand people. We have serious issues to take care of her and it is very disappointing that so many Americans thinks this is a game. If all these people relate to McCain and Palin we live in a very scary world. I wish she would stop smacking her lips when she talks and say something worthwhile.

Simple question. Too many lies from McCain and Palin.

Do any of you really want them setting the "win by lying" example for your kids?

  21. more of the same

wow...Palin is hotter than Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Miley Cirus combined!!!! But, that's all there is to it. An agent of change?? well..she's been obviously 'coached' what to say & how to lie. Much like Bush sticking to his claim of wmd in iraq, the economy is doing just fine, etc etc, palin is sticking to her bridge story. Watch out folks, a wolf in a sheep's clothing is still a wolf, or maybe a wolf with a lipstick :-)

I'D LIKE TO LET AMERICA KNOW THAT McCAIN AND PALIN HAVE BEEN OFFICIALLY DECLARED THE DUMBEST PRESIDENTIAL AND VP CANDIDATES IN AMERICAN HISTORY.

McCAIN – GRAUDUATED NUMBER 894 OUT OF 899 IN THE NAVAL
ACADEMY – NO COLLEGE. HUMMM, THAT'S DUMBER
    THAN BUSH.
PALIN – WENT TO SIX DIFFERENT COLLEGES IN SIX YEARS AND
SHE ONLY HAS A BA DEGREE. IN THAT TIME SPAN SHE
SHOULD HAVE HAD AT LEAST A MASTERS.

Note: Obama and Biden both have law degrees. Hmmm
