Palin tweaks stump speech for different audiences

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

CARSON CITY, Nevada (CNN) - Sarah Palin's reputation for rarely deviating from a scripted stump speech as she travels from city to city is not entirely accurate.

She’s open to changing a few lines here and there - depending on the audience.

Consider her speech Saturday in Nevada, site of the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository, a controversial project that would store radioactive waste in Nevadans’ backyard. At nearly every campaign stop over the last two weeks, Palin has touted McCain’s plan to expand nuclear energy, including storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

“In a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to expand nuclear energy, expand our use of alternative fuels, and drill now to make this nation energy independent,” she said to cheers last week in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

But in Carson City, where the Yucca issue hits closer to home, that remark about expanding nuclear energy disappeared.

Palin also gave a pair of modified stump speeches during her recent Welcome Home tour through Alaska that failed to mention the notorious Gravina Island Bridge, subject of her usual applause line on the campaign trail that “I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere."

The Alaska governor routinely cites her opposition to the bridge on the trail to reinforce her reformer reputation, but fact-check groups and the Obama campaign have noted out that Palin supported building the bridge before she came out against it.

Earlier: Palin stays firm on Bridge to Nowhere claim; Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'

At rallies last week in Fairbanks and Anchorage, where Palin's original position in favor of the bridge is well-known, her “thanks but no thanks” was left behind in the Lower 48.

Obama repeats his rhetoric. Come on, Obama, when are you going to accept a town hall meeting forum with McCain? Obama needs his scripted speeches; otherwise, he stumbles terribly.

Congressional opposition happened when current events of the time warranted reconsideration of the use of the funds for other purposes.

    Like Hurricanes....

but no one is bringing this up.

There is nothing wrong with changing your mind for the right reason.

The "tweak" for the Nevada speech is better known as a "lie of omission" with an emphasis on the word LIE.

Beside telling lies, she's big on nepotism. How can you hire an unqualified freind for a $92,000 job, the qualification of her idiot friend was " I love cow", how stupid is that.....If you think 8 years of Bush/Chenney was bad, stay tuned if the old man and wacko girl gets elected. ....can't wait to see wacko girl on the View or the Oberman show.

Palin has a long way to go and she is not ready to be Vice President. Its too much that she doesn't know and the White House is not for on the job training. This time is too serious and we atleast need a VP and president who atleast know what the issues are, instead of being told what the issues are. Palin will be a disaster, she needs allot of help and her interview with Charlie Gibson revealed that. She is not in the mainstream of Americans and she's not qualified to be VP. Theres allot Palin has to learn and understand before she is VP and especially a possible President. Any body who thinks Palin could be president is lying. Palin is just not ready to lead this country.

Palin's same speech is "tweeked" because her handlers are afraid to give her any new material right now because obviously she is not a quick study . That was demonstrated during her interview with Gibson. They worked with her day and night for a couple of days but when she couldn't use buzz words and phrases and she actually had to give an answer based on inner knowledge and not surface fluff....... her goose was cooked or maybe I should say her moose was cooked!

Laura, you are 100% correct. however when you do more one on one interviews, the truth will come out for all to see. I think it is a severe discredit to woman everywhere that the Republicans keep her under wraps. This seems to be the style of most conservative men. The women are to speak only when asked to. They don't believe women have the strength to stand on their own two feet.

It's interesting to see that the 'recent polls' suggest McCain has a lead, but whenever I look at comments on storied for either side, they are overwhelmingly in support of Obama, and fearful and angry with the Republicans.

Why is its you never mention the folksy accent that Obama takes on when on the stump in rural America? Not only does his message change from San Francisco to the heartlands but his accent does also.

I'd love to see you hold your own messiah to the same standards that you hold McCain/Palin to.

News please. Leave the analysis to the people. I'm tired of getting "spoon fed" what Gov. Palin is or isn't doing - how she is or isn't lying about this or that. Why not just come right out and say, "I don't like this candadate? That would at least be less manipulative and more honest.

    This coverage is that obvious.

Palin is Governor nucular like Bush. Watching her interview with Charlie Gibson, she pronounced the word nuclear, nucular twice. She is a script reader and reminds me of Bush. Is this the best the GOP has as a V.P. nominee after George Bush 28% approval rating?

These LIARS bring shame on the name of Christ. Evangelicals seem to be in a trance..most of the Christian population seem to be unaware that they voted on the wrong issues & elected Bush/Cheney thinking they had installed men with morals. The only person in that administration who had any integrity resigned after the first term and that was POWELL. Now we're about to repeat the mistake by falling for the LIES of this serpent from Alaska.
They have no issues to debate and no truths to speak on..every Ad contains lies..every one so far what does this say about them

When McCain/ Palin win in November (not if), I'm sure Cheney and Rove will be probably be given high places in McCain's cabinet. When McCain dies or has to leave office (not if), they'll be controlling the country through Palin.

Keep your eyes on the prize, Obama/Biden, more than ever. We can not allow the Republican party ticket to hold the most powerful office in the world. I can't imagine anything more scary.

Working mothers for Obama/Biden!!! Shame on you, John McCain, for treating us as though we are ignorant.

  17. Republican for Obama!

Palin, go home and play with your children instead of playing politics. You are a disgrace to leave your 5 children behind who need you very much!

You are setting a BAD example for parents all over this country. How do you intend to look after your kids and spend time with them IF you become VP? There will be times that you are gone for weeks, months at a time. Get real, lady!

People, wake up! Anyone who has raised kids knows that both parents must raise them.

This is conservativism. This is a prime example of how SELFISH this lady is.

Why do you bloggers not pair Palin with the right candidate? Why are you pairing her with Obama? Are you youngsters aware that not only old people die? Biden is also a "heartbeat away from the presidency".

Palin is a liar, a crook, a thief and will finish destroying this country if elected. Palin doesn't believe in evolution because she hasn't evolved. Women who are thinking of voting for the GOP ticket need to wake up. Palin is dangerous to your health, your well-being and threatens your constitutional rights. A vote for McCain/Palin is a vote to kill this country and to dissolve the rights of the women in it. Palin, as mayor of Wasilla, charged women who had been raped for the very rape kits that were used to gather evidence. What does that say about her character, not to mention her conscience? She is not a feminist. Do not be fooled.

As an outsider observer (from Canada), I watched Palin's interview with Gibson.
My opinion: Americans, really think before you vote.
McCain has completely reversed everything he stood for 8 years ago.And to say "country first" is hilarious considering he has a VP running mate who he chose soley to get votes so he could win this election.
This woman doesn't even agree with most of what McCain himself does. And whatever she does believe, its hard to tell because evidence continues to trickle out that many things that have been touted in her favour, are LIES!

One more important thing to consider, when has any public servant, a nurse, teacher, firefighter, police officer etc. ever been offered the 2nd highest position in their job, while being under investigation? No matter what the outcome is, if under investigation you don't get promoted up.
So how and why would McCain offer her the VP spot, knowing she is under investigation?
Does he know something we don't? Like she'll be cleared without really being investigated?
That seems like the only reason that McCain would tke that sort of chance.
Again, people, do your research, and think before you just vote for a pretty face. Look for what both campaigns really stand for and the issues their discussing, and how they're conducting themselves.
Look at who's lying, and who's fighting back on issues.
