Palin tweaks stump speech for different audiences

Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.
Palin recently returned to the campaign trail after a visit back to Alaska.

CARSON CITY, Nevada (CNN) - Sarah Palin's reputation for rarely deviating from a scripted stump speech as she travels from city to city is not entirely accurate.

She’s open to changing a few lines here and there - depending on the audience.

Consider her speech Saturday in Nevada, site of the proposed Yucca Mountain Repository, a controversial project that would store radioactive waste in Nevadans’ backyard. At nearly every campaign stop over the last two weeks, Palin has touted McCain’s plan to expand nuclear energy, including storage and reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel.

“In a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to expand nuclear energy, expand our use of alternative fuels, and drill now to make this nation energy independent,” she said to cheers last week in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

But in Carson City, where the Yucca issue hits closer to home, that remark about expanding nuclear energy disappeared.

Palin also gave a pair of modified stump speeches during her recent Welcome Home tour through Alaska that failed to mention the notorious Gravina Island Bridge, subject of her usual applause line on the campaign trail that “I told the Congress ‘thanks but no thanks’ for that Bridge to Nowhere."

The Alaska governor routinely cites her opposition to the bridge on the trail to reinforce her reformer reputation, but fact-check groups and the Obama campaign have noted out that Palin supported building the bridge before she came out against it.

Earlier: Palin stays firm on Bridge to Nowhere claim; Obama camp calls bridge claim a 'lie'

At rallies last week in Fairbanks and Anchorage, where Palin's original position in favor of the bridge is well-known, her “thanks but no thanks” was left behind in the Lower 48.

I FIND it very insulting that both McCain and Paliin would even suggest the American people are buying into this whole BS yet again.

I mean we ALL know what "tweaking" means. It simply means "we're going to revamp the old LIES into NEW LIES" so that we can play the American voters as STUPID all over again!!

I mean it's really astonishing that both John McCain and Sarah Palin seem to be hell bent on disgracing this country that we LOVE AND HONOR with these type of SLEAZY and CORRUPT gutter tactics.

I mean WHERE are their solutions facing millions of families in this country/ WHAT happen to "Country First"?

It appears that VOTERS are starting to see the TRUE COLORS of the McCain-Palin camp. The more they spew lies after lies and NO answers to healthcare, mortgage crisis, employment decline, GAS prices and on HOW to end the IRAQ WAR!!!

ALL John McCain and Sarah Palin seem to talk about is SENDING US INTO ANOTHER WAR WITH EITHER PAKISTAN OR RUSSIA or BOTH!!! They SCARE the living B-Jesus out of me and my whole family. A bunch of Presidential terrorists, is what these two fools are!! They want to HOLD THE AMERICAN VOTERS HOSTAGE like a bunch of "cattle with NO brains" with their LIES AND SLEAZY DISTORTIONS!!

If you Republicans are truly this STUPID in buying John and Sarah's BRIDGE TO NOWHERE, then may God have mercy on your soul, because in 4 years, you'll be sitting right here in this very same blog doing nothing but COMPLAINING and BLAMING everyone else but YOUR IGNORANT SELVES!!!

    To Tim,
How is she a role model and a uniter? Who has she united? The people in Wasilla? What has she done to prepare her for this position? Lies about her role as the objector for the "Bridge to Nowhere?" Trooper Gate?
Hiring a lobbyist for $$$ for pet projects in Alaska. The torturing of animals in Alaska. Some role model!!! Going to 5 colleges to get a degree should wave a red flag. Hockey moms are not qualified for the highest office in the land. We would be the laughing stock in the world!!

Repeating her stump speech is not the problem. All of them do that. Repeating the lies is. STOP the LIES.

Amazing! She's hiding their plan from the people in Nevada to trick them to vote for her. And not saying something in Alaska because Alaskans KNOW it's not true. Got to give her credit. She's a gifted liar.

Don't fall for it again, people. We can't afford four more years of this.

She was for the bridge until it was killed, at which point she no longer supported a dead project, but just kept the funding. She and McCain attack earmarks, but the earmarks she has requested as governor are "different" than those requested by other states. Every state thinks its earmarks are legitimate. Earmarks are a pittance of the federal budget. If this is the only way they will bring about "change" that is a real joke.

She can't speak intelligently about any issues facing the country–McCain isn't much better. I fear that McCain-Palin will be even worse for the country than Bush-Cheney have been.

  9. We the people...

Have we all gone mad? You cannot even compare the brilliance of Obama with her!!! Yes, there were other presidents who had limited experience like Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln... but the difference is that they along with Obama were brilliant leaders who represented all of the people! You could see that even with the prepping for her interview with Charles Gibson, she sounded like she was interviewing for a beauty contest. We complain and scream bloody murder about Bush's tactics, but then replace another set just like the one that is in now. McCain turned out to be an immoral, out of touch with people's problems, very old candidate who has no honor or shame in how he is running his campaign. If you cannot see that he is NOT talking about the issues but is smearing lies, then we are in serious trouble!

Thank you Lord, thank you she stop saying "thanks, but no thanks!" The world is sick and tired of heairng this lady saying the same lines OVER and OVER again.

Start comparing this woman with the greatest women leaders in the world......she can not stand next to them. She's so childish, she's only glitter and glamour....thinks running for vice president is a beauty contest........What ever people say about her.....the sexist card is being use. While she YES, is entitled to mock everybody......Who does she tink she is. When she opens her mount you don't hear or notice no intellectually signs coming out her mounth, sorry!Screaming, yelling some rehearsal lines like she is competing in a beauty contest. No substance is comming out her mounth..... and just repeating what she is being told . You can hear it from her speeches because she keeps repeating them over and over again because she can't say anything else.

Alaska people has no other option than support her because if they don't her sect will go after them and reprisal will be taken against them. And this same style McCain campaign want to enfource on the American people. Fear factor!!!

Every time someone says something about her, the "Sexist, disrespectful, protect her reputation" card is being use. Hey , this is a political battlefield. If she can take it, send her back home with her 5 children. She wants to be tough? She wants to be use by McCain? Be real!!

When she has to negotiate with Putin or Osama Binladen, when they kind start attacking her, are they going to use the sexist and pityful ads too? Be real people!

Some applauded her because she said during her interview she didn't hestitate when Mccain had asked her to run with him as vice president. Well sorry....... such a big decision?! Every responsible person, manager, leader will or should analyse and think first about this before taking any step. Like that she is going to react when it come to foreign policy, don't hestitate, lets go to War??? Narrow minded!

You can see that the American people starts to think clearly again. The polls are showing this. God! spare the world of the McCain/Palin ticket, it will be back again in the 19 centuries..WAR WAR WAR WAR, curfew, curfew. People dying every where and Mother like me putting their sons to die in War for McCain/ Palin sake!!

    Poor getting poorer
    Rich getting richer

God, do not only spare the American nation but spare the whole world from this War mongers and crazy people! McCain & Palin

  12. Tired of the half truths

Each candidate should have to swear " I promise to tell the truth, THE WHOLE TRUTH" Are the American people really looking at both parties and seeing what is being said? I have heard news agencies say they use TRUTH.ORG to get the "real" answers. Also at what point did it become acceptable to use a "HALF TRUTH"? Sad.. It is just all so sad....

The leaders of China,Russia,Venezuela etc must be sitting back and getting a real laugh at our campaign for selecting our President. With all the horrors, hunger, wars, job losses (I can go on and on) in this world, the McCain camp chooses to talk about "lipstick on a pig". I can also see them discussing how the women of this country will pick a leader simply because she is a woman. Well, not this woman. I have more brains than that and I should think all other women in this country would consider more than just her gender. I would love nothing more than to have a woman President or Vice President, but it has to be the right woman and she has to be selected for the right reasons. This is not the right woman and she was definately not selected to run with McCain for the right reasons. We no longer have the respect of other countries due to the Bush years, now we are the laughing stock of other countries as well. Where in the name of God have these politicians taken this country????

Believe me when I say, the republican party is not stupid and if they win Palin will not be able to make another speech and they will shut her down. She is just a poster child for them and she is enjoying the ride. What a disgrace to all the true intelligent woman who sit in position of status. How in the World was this chick voted into anything.

The economy is getting worse. Las Vegas is about to close down. God is sending hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, train wrecks, earthquakes to punish the city of Sodom and Gomorah for the Republican lies that tore up the city of Iraq. Now, we are getting torn up. No Way, No How, No McCain.

Modifying your speech for the audience is a standard practice on the campaign trail. What's your point? Why are you picking on Sarah?

Sarah Palin will do or say anything to get elected. Say, lies..Do, ditch family to campaign. I am a woman who is highly annoyed with the fact she so easily made the choice to run at this time in her life. Yes, women are fully capable of being VP. But, there is a time when the decisions we make to have a family should come first. Hillary didn't make the choice to run for high office when she had a young child by the way.

She does indeeed pander to the particular crowd. A McBush trait.
This morning Newt Gingerich attacked the media saying that by questioning Palin religious background, the media were attacking Christians. Not true. I am a Christian from a Pentacostal Church. When A person may become the leader of the free world. And they come from a Church that Preaches that critics of Bush are going to Hell.
Jews are the cause of Terrorism. The Iraq war is God's plan. And the world will soon be destroyed but God will spare Alaska as a Divine refuge for Real Christians. These are world views that the public has a right to know. And, did I hear Newt defending Obama when he was being castigated by the Republicans for having a controversial Pastor?
    Didn't think so. Hipocrites !

I agree with chanel. The View seems to be the only media outlet that was courageous enough to call them out on their lies. Maybe "The View" will give the other outlets a different and better "view" of reporting and helping Americans to disseminate the truth about this candidate. Like I said before, Obama was vetted strongly by the American people and the media. They know him as if they birthed him. Palin, on the other hand, is unknown by the American people. It is the media's job to inform the American citizens about who she really is. If they do not inform us, then how are we suppose to make an educated decision come Nov. 4. Cnn, don't be afraid to go after this woman! This is not about being a sexist, and don't allow this campaign to deflect you guys from wants important to American people. Now look at what's happening, lies and more lies are coming out about this campaign. Lies that she repeated out on the stump. Lies about her foreign travel and a host of other things. I guess now you guys realize that all that "glitter is not gold."
