(CNN) - Hours after calling the economy ‘strong,’ John McCain appeared to clarify the comment Monday afternoon, minutes after he was derided as "out of touch" by the Obama campaign.
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong," McCain said at a campaign event in Orlando. "No one can match an American worker. Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth. Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today."
“But their efforts are not being matched at the top," he added. "From Washington to Wall Street, the top of our economy is broken. We have seen self interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption undermine the hard work of the American people."
McCain faced criticism earlier in the day from Democrats for telling a Jacksonville crowd that, "Our economy - I think, still - the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times."

The economy is strong enough for donors to send the Obama campaign hundreds of millions of dollars.
The pathetic part of this is, McCain and camp will come out with some BS spin story about this makes sense, and 45% of you will believe it. Even after the last 8 years of unmitigated disaster, you still believe him.
I guess you're getting what you deserve then. Personally, I'd ready to give someone intelligent a chance to run the government, because I am sick of borrowing money from China to pay for an illegal war, and expecting my daughters and grandchildren to pay it off.
Our workers are out of work fool!!!
ONE NATION
LOL, SPIN, SPIN, SPIN, SO FUNDAMENTALS ARE THE WORKERS WHO ARE GETTING LAID OFF AND CAN'T FIND JOBS?
What he says may sound nice to the average republican...
The reality is that per capita we're being out-performed by many nations...
Both by production and education
We don't even come close to Japan for instance.
McCain will tell you what you want to hear, but everything he tries to sell you is a double edge sword.
McCain said below- Yeah McCain and yuo've been in the senate for 26 years- what exactly have you done for the american worker??? You are self interested and greeedy and irresposinsible!!!!! You've done nothing for us with ALL YOUR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE!!!
Bow out NOW??? Liar!
But their efforts are not being matched at the top," he added. "From Washington to Wall Street, the top of our economy is broken. We have seen self interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption undermine the hard work of the American people."
"We have seen self interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption undermine the hard work of the American people".
Finally something true out of this man's mouth.
His party is guilty of all his accusations, since Republican have held the WH and a majority of Congress, for the last 6 of the 8 years.
We truly cannot affor 4 more years of this no nothing.
Sadly, Senator McCain just seems confused.
Oh, oh.
Damage control.
Damage control.
Ooops. Too late.
You're stil not getting it, Mr. McCain.
The economy sucks!!!!! Ever heard of Wall Street? Notice how many companies are failing because of the economic policies Dubya's maintained????
And then you want to continue them????
Get outta here!
And don't tell me the "surge" is working!
He said the economy was strong today? Unbelievable, what an idiot. Give him his meds and put him to bed.
Never let 'em see you sweat and never admit you're wrong... not what I want in a President.
Would everyone please take the time to look at the 2 tickets education? It will all start to make sense then. I hope everyone will overcome their "other" reasons for not selecting the obviously more qualified and educated ticket............ your kids/grandkids' futures might depend on it.
McCain is 'out of touch' because he doesn't understand the message his comments about the economy are sending to the electorate. Clearly, the U.S. economy is in dire straits. Everybody seems to know that but John McCain. The housing marketing is a debacle and numerous financial institutions are in trouble. Detroit is in real trouble, too. Then there's that pesky national debt issue. How bad do things have to be before McCain will drop this politician's platitude about our "strong economy"? When a person running for president makes these kinds of preposterously pollyannaish comments, one has to wonder just how long the lunch is that he is out to.
Old and clueless... what a swell candidate.... and Caribou Barbie ain't much better..... BUSH DOCTRINE? DUH HUH?
we know. it's just a "mental recession"........the "nation of whiners" should just be quiet.....
Jokey McCain really thinks that is he's in at world 40 years ago. Mc Cain go to the house and enjoy your last years with your family. You don't know if you are going or coming. Mc Cain wants so badly to go to war, and to keep war going. go to the HOUSE.
Of course he defends his comment. He is an idiot, so he does not know any better!! Is CNN going to report how Alaska had the biggest protest in their history when Palin went back to speak?
This is no country for old men.
Just more of the same "stick your head in the sand" Bush rhetoric from this guy.
Wake up America!!!
Fundamentals of our economy are strong?
Stubburn McCain disagrees with economy experts like Alan Greenspan.
McCain is the the definition of "out of touch"
McCain has become the Fathers of all LIES, the ACCUSER....
McCain still believes that the TITANIC could have been saved by the ICEBERG that he represents.
What a DISGRACE FOR AMERICA.

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008 – 2016
McCain can't be part of the solution. He and his kind are part of the problem.

"No one can match an American worker. Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth. Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today."
that is baloney...our national defense is MUCH weaker now that we cannot produce a single armament in this country and 90% of production is outsourced to China which, due to its' immense wealth, is able to avoid any WTO commitments that other nations must abide by; if by safer from Iraq, fine, but if by safer from actual countries which are more powerful, then no, mccain, we are not safer, and your very own policies of "free" trade and globalization have made us much weaker....
You are so right! Our workers are the best! Which is why your supporting of sending our jobs overseas is criminal! Barrack obama believes in rewarding companies who DON’T ship jobs over seas, a move you do don’t support.
The American workers are not the fundamentals...it is the failed policies that your party has peddled for the last 8 years.
Obama/Biden '08
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE,
DON'T LIE TO AMERICANS ANY MORE.
YOU ARE EITHER OUT OF TOUCH or OUT OF MIND to think that our economy is strong.
Look what you Republicans and your policies have done to this country. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
