(CNN) - Hours after calling the economy ‘strong,’ John McCain appeared to clarify the comment Monday afternoon, minutes after he was derided as "out of touch" by the Obama campaign.
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong," McCain said at a campaign event in Orlando. "No one can match an American worker. Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth. Our workers have always been the strength of our economy, and they remain the strength of our economy today."
“But their efforts are not being matched at the top," he added. "From Washington to Wall Street, the top of our economy is broken. We have seen self interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption undermine the hard work of the American people."
McCain faced criticism earlier in the day from Democrats for telling a Jacksonville crowd that, "Our economy - I think, still - the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times."

I wish I saw the economy from McCain's position. I'd say it was strong if I was the most pampered United States Senator. As a person hoping to retire this year on halloween, a joke on myself, I'm praying I don't get out there and crash and burn. I will pay my mortgage first then the utilities and anything left can go for food. I plan to keep my car and the clothes I now own. I will vote for Obama because his agenda his his daughters and me.
Boy John you didnt do so good today, making the statements you did about the enconomy. You and Cindy have no idea what it is like not to be able to make your house payment, buy grocerys, put Gas in your car. Where is your little beauty queen today, where the crowds of people. So you think you and Sarah are going to talk the people into getting us four more years of Bush. Well John it can be a task from God to take you two out of this election, just like Sarah said it was a task from God for the iraq war. John what goes around comes around and Mark my word it is coming around to you and your precious little Sarah.
McCain just proved that he really doesn't understand what 'Economy' is about. This is just PATHETIC "Our workers sell more goods than any other on earth". EXACTLY, YOU IDIOT! But who manufactures those "goods"? China! That's why USA is going down, you outsourced all the manufacturing jobs!!
does anyone realize that every outfit cindy mccain is wearing cost dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars? e.g. the opening night of the RNC, she wore earrings worth over $280K. that's more than my house is worth...hanging from her fricking ears!
Policies have always been fundamentals of the economy not human beings McDumb, Human ideas and are the drivers of the policies with right environment work things to profit. Quote me anywhere.
It's strong, no it's not, yes it is, not it's not, yes it is.....
The mind is a terrible thing to waste.....
I suppose he figured out that was not a good thing to say... doesn't change the fact that he belives it !!!!!!!!
The econmy is fundamentally sound for him and the rest of the people who are rich but for you everyday average citizen times are not easy. He is out of touch with your every citizen. No amount of clarification will clear it up for me and some others.
He shouldn't do this to himself. He doesn't need to.
If our economy is so strong......Why is it then that almost every item in the stores (including food) is imported from another country? Where are the MADE IN AMERICA products? McCain is out of touch and his choice for VP Proves it.
The economy is strong if I had 8 homes and I dress like Cindy Mcsame.
this old man needs to sit down somewhere
if the economy is so strong why are so many people hurting
he never favored tough regulation on these companies and look whats happening right now (out of business) one after the other .
He has more house than he has of hair, I'm sure his economy is strong, but for the rest of us the economy is a sham.
Give me a break.. saying the fundamentals of our economy is strong vs. saying "the fundamentals of America are strong" are two completely different things.
The McCain campaign has jumped the shark. They are becoming a laughing stock from all the lies. Even Fox News is calling them out on their lies.
I can't trust McCain with my vote in November. He is totally out of touch when it comes to the economy and I truly believe things will remain the same and even get worse under his administration. We need real change...we need Obama!
Greed for sure, and lack of regulation . . . .dot.com bust, housing crisis, price of oil result from greed. People need to have limits set (regulations)to help avoid these kinds of problems. Even the best of us try and take advantage of a situation and then everyone suffers . . . well, most everyone . . .
FLIP FLOP
FLIP FLOP
FLIP FLOP
FLIP FLOP
FLIP FLOP
"My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong...."
Dang, it is so easy for rich people like McSame to say stuff like this!!!
"Our workers sell more goods to more markets than any other on earth."
What about China, Mr. McSame?
If Mc cain thinks that the American economy is"strong",I'd hate to hear what he calls weak. Our citizens are having a difficult time keeping their homes..not a problem for him and his friends...paying their utility and food bills..agian not his problem. How can the average person think that he really cares about their situation? He picks a VP that is in pocket of the oil industry...do you really think that anyone in alaska wants an alternate fule..they all get rebate checks from oil sales.Get real Americans...don't be fooled by these politicians again.Bush ran as a person thaat could unite the country and looks what's happened to us.Take a chance on a black man who couldn't do any more harm to our country then the fat, rich, white men have done to it over the past eight years. No,I'm not black just a 68 year old white Catholic that has enough sense not to push my religion on anyone and who knows that anyone that says God is on the side of war in Iraq is a really scary person.Bush has God speaking to him and just look what that has done to our beloved nation.
It Is The Economy Stupid! Sure the American worker is the best in the world; However, the economy is broken because of your republican's failed poilcies Stupid! Where is the American worker going to get a good paying job when you and your cronies want to out-source everything Stupid?
McSame does not have a clue about the economy!
That's right; damage control- at it's finest.
I agree we are all out here working hard!
It is time that as Americans we say to the Do nothing Liberal Congress
"Get to work, like the rest of us!"
McCain/Palin-08-in a Landslide!
Flip, Flop, Flop, Flip, once again Mcstupid has it wrong. Economy is strong yeah right! Please retire already!
OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
Of course he "clarified" it.
So this is basically the strategy of the McCain campaign...
Make sure to confuse the American people enough with distortions, misdirection and ridiculous statements; then come up with an "apple pie" clarification that sounds so wonderful that the American people don't recall any of the confusion that McCain has perpetrated on them.
Please, America, don't fall for any of this. I beg of you for the future of our country.
I guess economy is fine if you own 7 houses. Tell that to those who lost their jobs or those that have to take 2,3 jobs to provide for their and then you tell me if the economy is strong
Nice backtrack.
Really? And some Americans are STILL buying what this guy is selling?
