A new Independent ad is targeting Obama's abortion record.

(CNN) – A newly formed anti-abortion group is taking direct aim at Barack Obama, launching a television ad in key campaign states that features a 31-year old survivor of an abortion procedure.

The ad is only one of a handful of newly-launched independent television commercials hitting airwaves in recent weeks as the final stretch of the presidential campaign begins.

BornAliveTruth.org, an independent expenditure group known as a 527, is hitting airwaves in New Mexico and Ohio with a 30-second spot that criticizes the Democratic presidential nominee for voting against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in when he was an Illinois state senator. Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures.

Watch: New ad targets Obama on abortion

The group was founded by Jill Stanek, a columnist to the conservative for Web site World Net Daily, who has made controversial statements in the past expressing her opposition of abortion rights. Under the headline “Faithful condom users die,” she wrote on her Web site in March that efforts to post billboards in Tanzania with the words "Faithful Condom Users" next to a picture of a large skeleton should be supported.

The new ad features Gianna Jessen, who survived a late-term abortion procedure in 1977 and says in the ad, "If Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here."

“Can you imagine not giving babies their basic human rights, no matter how they entered our world?" Jessen says in the ad. "Four times, Barack Obama voted to oppose a law to protect babies left to die after a failed abortion. Senator Obama, please support born alive infant protections. I’m living proof these babies have a right to live.”

I am also very mad at my mother and Obama.. my mother tried to abort me untill I was 29 years old..

It was horrible...

Republicans believe the right to life begins at conception and ends at birth.

Rob   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

If you choose to have sex and get pregnant, then you should have the responsibility to either raise the child or put it up for adoption. It's not a 'lump of cells', it's not something you can throw away! You want to demonize those who willfully murder people, yet you feel a woman should have the right to commit murder just because she doesn't want to be burdened? Guess what, if you're grown up enough to have sex, you should be grown up to face the consequences. But then again, that's the Dem/Lib mantra – why take responsibility, let someone else do it.

David   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

I don't understand the aim of this ad. We're all aware of each candidates opinion on abortion. All this will do is make Obama and McCain supporters hold firm.

Fantastic waste of money.

T.   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Abortion is a very important topic. I bet if we stopped all abortions in America, that would allow people losing their homes and their jobs to avoid both of these horrible experiences. Furthermore, halting abortions will get us out of a billion dollar a month war in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will bring back to life the thousands who died in Iraq and heal the 40,000 sick and wounded men and women who served in this useless conflick. I bet the honest and brainy Sarah can use abortion to keep us from entering into a war with Russia and Iran. And it will allow us to get more than 3% (honest Sarah says 20%) of the nation's oil from the great state of Alaska. And finally it will solve all of our economic woes. What a team we have in control of this country once ancient and clueless are elected. You, who vote for them deserve everything you get.

miken   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Obama is waffleing on this. Four times, Barack Obama voted to oppose a law to protect babies left to die after a failed abortion and now he doesn't want to admit it. Where does this guy stand – his position is always changeing.

JB   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

This is ridiculous, do you know what is worse than people using media outlets and the media itself to make these horrible accusations? The people, the ignorant people who simply believe it without doing any research what so ever. It takes a disgusting person to accuse someone else of infanticide, but even lower, are the hateful people who believe it without question.

Filipina   September 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Its my choice if I have abortion or not, you and Palin cant tell me what to do,,,,You should do an ad about "Not to cheat on your spouse" sounds familiar? You might as well you are dirty.

Even the 527 groups have to LIE about Obama's record to have any kind of "convincing" argument. Anyone with a brain could acknowledge that no self respecting would want to leave a born alive infant to die. Obama is against late term abortions except in the case that threatens the life of the mothers.

Let's think about this. Would it make any sense that Obama would support legislation that would mandate that a born alive infant be left to die? Keeping in mind that this late term abortion is only being done to save the life of the mother. The LIEs about Obama's view of abortion don't make any logical sense.

Michele   September 16th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

Infantcide is sick. This is the primary reason I cannot vote for Obama.
I am pro-choice but if a botched abortion results in a living infant that baby must be helped!!

Obama is a sick, sick, sick, sick man! (4 sicks for each time he voted against saving these infants)

Patty   September 16th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

This is not about abortion – it's about saving a life that was the result of an abortion. This is what Obama voted against. Would you not try to save the life of someone who had been seriously injured! What is wrong with you people. Read the facts and get it straight.

Nicole In NE   September 16th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

If you want the whole story, the reason Obama didn't sign it was because there was wording in the bill that could open Roe vs. Wade into question. Plain and simple.

If you people believe that Obama is for infantcide, you need help....seriously.

What goes on inside a woman's body is nobodies business but hers-not mine, not yours and certainly not the government. If anyone else has a say it would be the person that put it there but all the woman would have to do to shut him up would be to say–it's not yours. Like I said–it's nobodies business but hers.

Jim   September 16th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

How bout putting blame where blame is due Mrs. Jessen, the CHOICE was YOUR mother's not Obama's. He's Pro CHOICE, which is drastically different from being pro-abortion as you people like to portray.

Candy West Virginia   September 16th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Tony – I couldn't have said it better myself. Don't believe in Abortions, don't have one! PERIOD.

Peter Grenader   September 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

This ad is disgraceful, the fact that this organization has the word 'truth' in it's name even more so. While I'm sure both Mr. Goebbels and Mr. Stalin would be proud of the tactics being used here, the American public is not.

JC   September 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Once again, the radical pro-life movement is confusing pro-choice with pro-abortion. As Obama has said many times, he is not "pro-abortion" - and who would be? Giving the choice to women to make their own decision does not mean you advocate the practice. This is also the height of hypocrisy by Republicans who claim to want "smaller government" and want to give the states the choice about regulating their citizens, but want to make abortion illegal on a national level. They cannot have it both ways. If the wealthy are to be given the choice on how to spend and invest their money, then I should have the choice about how to deal with a pregnancy that may have been the result of rape or incest.

David Hillman   September 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

So a 527 is attacking Obama on an issue, one important to most folks, and his 527s respond by attempting to Swift-boat John Mccain?

Can some Obama supporter explain how this is some new brand of politics anymore? Looks like Obama is the same old desperate-to-win lying con-artist. Hope indeed.

Kristen   September 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Waste of money. The hardcore abortion voters are already going to vote for their grandpa. This ad is a total distortion of the truth. The core of the bill was to try to revert Roe v Wade in Illinois (like S. Dakota tried to do). The bill contained some provision about resuccitation of aborted fetuses. Like almost everyone else in the Senate (something like 85%), the bill was shot down. That does not mean Obama wants to kill your baby you rightwing nutbags. Also, I love how you claim Obama has no experience and then raise issues on bills he voted on a decade ago. Apparently more than a decade in public office for the Fed government and one of the most populated states in the country doesn't work for you, but mayor of a town of 5,000 is so much better. Obama/Biden 08-16

Marie   September 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Again, Republican supporters are stretching the truth. Senator Obama never voted against life saving measures for babies. His State already had that in effect. He simply voted against a bill that would have jeopardized Roe vs. Wade. I'm a Republican, and I'm tired of all these attack ads. With the economy in the tank, isn't there anything else Senator McCain can talk about. Oh, by the way, I do believe in abortion rights for the victims of rape and incest. Running ads like these only makes the Republican candidates look desperate!

how many women would die because of shoddy illegal abortions if roe v. wade was overturned?

and how can palin be pro-gun and pro-death penalty and pro-war AND pro-life? hypocrites.

Restore America   September 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

The fact is that abortion is wrong. Killing an innocent child for your mistake is an even bigger mistake. It's been proven by science that a fetus is a living thing, a living HUMAN. So if you don't want a kid...don't have sex and if you do, use your sex-ed and don't get pregnant. No one should be punished for your mistake, especially a helpless infant.

Don   September 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Hate to date myself like this. But I was an Orderly working my way through college BEFORE Wade vs Roe. I remember the bad old days, when young women were dumped off at the emergency room door-near comatose from bleeding and infection. They had had the back-alley abortion with coat hangers and kerosene soaked rags.

They bled profusely (those who were not bled out) and had horrible infections. Many died. And to steal a line from "Man of LaMancha"– I held their hands at their last moment. I looked into their fever drenched eyes. They were not asking why they were dying, but why they had ever lived!

Hold their hand McShame and Palin. Look into their eyes as I have and tell them why they are dying.

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   September 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Abortion is a woman's personal choice.

Instead of pointing fingers at Obama, Ms. Gianna Jessen should ask her mother why she choose to abort. Jessen's anger is aimed at the wrong target.

David, Silver Spring, MD   September 16th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I love Republicans like Mary (one of the commenters). They're all about protecting fetuses, but they have no problem killing adults, either through unnecessary wars or capital punishment. Nor do they have any problem with kids being subjected to lead or other environmental toxins that leave them, not dead maybe, but diminished to the point of being unable to live a full life.

sophia nyc   September 16th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Obama didn't 'invent' Roe v Wade

Abortion is a fundamental right of liberty. What other rights will the Republicans take from us?

Sara Martini   September 16th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Actually, no. The human being in the womb is a distinct entity. Anyhow, Obama does not want to protect kids OUTSIDE the womb either, when it is clearly not anyone else's body.

Republicans are ridiculous   September 16th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Republicans are such idiots. I'm more pro-life then they are. Though I some what support abortion I think that other alternatives should be used when necessary. Unlike republican "pro-life" I don't support the death penalty, you know when the person that is being killed is actually aware of it's mortality. I also don't support war, where republicans are sure happy to go in and kill God knows how many people. Even one of these people even made a comment earlier that Democrats support infantcide but not the death penalty. Um I'm pretty sure both are life, so using the term "pro-life" is only a little true...really only for one issue.

ABORTION IS MURDER..... Don't do it! It will haunt you till the day you die...

Debra   September 16th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

In 1977 Obama was in high school if my math is correct. This woman's mother is the one that had the abortion.I received an e-mail stating Obama supports beating fetses in the head until they die in such abortions. The lies must stop. Bill Clinton was pro-choice, my young daughter was told by a friend at the tender age of 6 that he killed babies. Distortion and fear monguling is the Republican parties way. Women have a choice and should continue to have a choice. Thier decisions are thier own personal one's, not something for poitician's to play with. Palin is so far to the right women may lose this choice with her "mission".

LS   September 16th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Too much of a touchy subject – other people need to mind their own business on what other people decide to do in their lives. Especially, when it involves different situations and reasons why these choices are made.

real dem   September 16th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

During the primaries, the Hillary-supporting "feminists" yelled that Barack Obama wasn't pro-choice enough.

Now Barack is too pro-choice?

He's too white, he's too black.

He's too liberal, he's too conservative.

He's a Washington insider, he's a naive community organizer.

Blah, blah, blah.

Cindy   September 16th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

"Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures."

So then, she's a survivor of the existing law that insured life saving treatment to survivors of abortion procedures.

So the existing law works; what's the problem here?

tedious898   September 16th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Mary....you my dear need to try to open up the very dense area just above your neck (i.e. ur brain) .....quit attacking democrats. Most of us are against abortions. However, we feel a woman should have the right to choose. Further, democrats work harder to see that every child has a home, decent education and healthcare. Remember idiots like Palin and Guilliani making jokes about Barack being a community organizer? That's what those people.

Yet I digress......

If we use your idiot logic – Republicans would rather a mother be forced to have the child and the infant die in gutter from starvation, disease; as the parents won't be able to get a job under failed GOP policies. Or they can be drafted for McCain's next war and get to see the world before being shot or blown up (if they're lucky).

Now Mary...try thinking a little bit more than using the same childish and STUPID approach your party is so regularly known.

Are you against abortion? Well thats simple, just don't have one! thats what it means being pro-choice, no one forces people to get abortions, but yet groups out there want to force women to carry their pregnancies.

Its called choice for a reason, this means that you are free to choose and live with the consequences of your actions.

Ok we can outlaw abortion, then what should the punishment be for those who get and illegal abortion?

Ask that to the pro-lifers, What punishment should the government give for those who seek illegal abortions?

Catholic Democrat   September 16th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

That is the problem with our country...too many abortions. I think the reason most women are for abortion is because they have had one and want to feel that it is okay...but it is not. Abortion kills the unborn and ruins lives.

The law on abortion isn't going to change no matter who is President. It just isn't. Is one single hopeless issue more important than a dozen others that Obama will do better at?
Its naive of them to think this issue is more important than the health care of every single American young and old and not sending our children to die later.
That's the big contradiction with anti-abortion groups. They are for the life of an unborn child, but once you've been born, tough cookies. They want to send you off to die in a war or execute you for trivial non-felonies.

Here we go again, trying to push abortion as a theme for the presidential campaign, this is becoming to much of the norm, and I really think this just exploits the issue rather then effective solutions to help curve abortions. The issue of abortion is not the single most important issue in a presidential candidate or for choosing a president, this is a personal, emotional, spiritual and private discussion that folks continue to use as persuasion for social conservatives to vote for repubs every 4 years. This exploitation will not work in this election. The one thing I do agree with Sen. Obama is that, we need to curve abortions and we need to find ways in prevention. I have worked with teens in peer programs, and let me tell you, abortion has no discrimmination or political party, this is happening to girls from all various walks of life. So instead of shouting about out about a political party record on abortion, they ad should have discussed what they can do about curving the percentages of abortions in this country. HELLO!

AlisonB   September 16th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

It is a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. So are they saying if a woman is raped or by incest becomes pregnant she MUST have the child.

As a woman would it not already be a burden to carry for the rest of your life being raped much less to have to go through 9 months and deliver a child by someone who violated you so terribly.

Come on people get real. This is a choice of an individual woman not the government to make a life decision for anyone.

John McPain   September 16th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Yes, that is what really matters. Who cares about 100,000's of people being killed in Bush's revenge war? Who cares about the economic ruin over the last 8 years? Nope, all we care about is abortion. Forget the fact that the GOP has had ample time to ban abortion if they wanted to. Nah, that doesn't matter.

And to the Anti-Abortion people, why aren't you all so gung ho about helping the hundred of thousands of children waiting to be adopted? If you had your way, women would be FORCED to keep a child they don't want and would end up putting up in the HORRIBLE FOSTER CARE SYSTEM...

YOU do not know when life begins regardless of what you may think....any consequences would be between the woman and the God that she serves, not the men/women worrying more about pushing their agenda.....

Blank stare   September 16th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I'm glad this is out in the open FINALLY!
I think that Obama's abortion record is abysmal and should not be tolerated.

He is pro murdering an innocent life.

- It's all very well to be pro death penalty – that's murdering some evil man who deserves to die.

- But what crime have these innocent babies committed?
None!!

LORI: yes it is your body – but the life you have inside you is its own life – no longer yours, why the heck should you destroy it!!? What right do you have?

And because Obama has his priorities ALL WRONG, i'm refusing to vote for him!!

Andy J, NY   September 16th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Spencer from VA

here is a fact for you, my friend

FACT: Obama voted to allow babies to be left to die if they survive an abortion attempt.

That is a fact, its on record, so stop your crying. Obama has a sick perspective on pregnancy. Remember "I don't want my children to be punished with a baby"

use your story to help other women in need... not go on the attack against a political party. abortion is the SYMPTOM NOT THE PROBLEM. if we spent half our energy focused on that issue which there are no disagreements over, perhaps we would be further along at this point... wish mccain/palin would recognize this and make some sort of effort for women's rights... including her right to make a decision, no matter what it is.

My uterus – my CHOICE and none of your business. This is EXACTLY why we need to separate Church from State. People like McCain and especially extremists like Palin will jump at the chance to elect an extremist Supreme to try to overturn Roe Vs. Wade.

Mainstream America wants choice. I've never had an aboution and probably never will. But I was attacked when I was younger. Remembering what I went through, women should always have the right to choose under ANY circumstance. Palin and people like her should stop spending their time judging everyone else. Palin and people like her should stop promoting hate through their churches. Nothing good ever resulted from promoting hate and judging people that are different.

You sure about that?   September 16th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

"Ron September 16th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Women have a right to choose. Palin will make sure this right is taken away from each and every women in America."

wrong. That decision is made by the supreme court, not the president. Perhaps you should retake american government 101 where they talk about separation of powers.

It's about time someone finally comes out against obama on this issue. It's fine that he is pro-choice but saying that a baby born by accident during an abortion doesn't get the rights of life is too much for me. The bill in no way underminded Roe v. Wade. All it did was outline that a baby born due to any kind of medical mistake would be given the basic rights that all americans are given. There may or may have not been laws in Illinois about that but what harm could reaffirming them do?

rumpusgoopus   September 16th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Yup, Obama is pro-choice. We knew that already.

John Smith   September 16th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Has anyone actually thought that Christianity might just be wrong about the "Abortion Issue?"

Here is how my muslim friend reasoned me through this issue:

If you believe that Jesus, as the Son of God, had LIFE before conception, how can you argue that LIFE begins at conception?

If Jesus had a life BEFORE conception, and returned to that life AFTER his death, then his LIFE did not begin at conception.

Therefore, LIFE begins long BEFORE conception. So you cannot argue that life is valuable only at the time of conception.

Can someone help me out here? I await your insight!

jm for sc   September 16th, 2008 11:59 am ET

This is a absolutely insane. Obama is not an advocate for abortion and should not be held accountable for people who makes that choice. Every election, abortion is front and center as if the democrats are pushing it.

I am a democrat and do not believe in abortion. So guess what? I will never have one or aid in anybody else getting one. However, I believe each of us have a right to make our own choices. If people feel that they can deal with the consequences of their actions, it is totally up to them.

God wants all of us to believe in him and live according to the bible. However, he gives each individual the right to chose their own way of living. He does not force anyone to do anything so why should we?

The thing is, there is not big sin and little sin. If I am a liar and you had an abortion if we both fail to repent, we both will end up the same place. what more does Obama have to say since he has plainly communicated to america that he is not an advocate but wishes to reduce the number of abortions by educating people on other options.

If McCain is elected, abortion will still be legal and we will still be heading into a recession.

American Airman, I agree with you so much but unfortunately history has shown us that the high road doesn't win, which says a lot about us as a nation. I believe that the Obama campaign would have liked to keep this race about issues and also to not indulge in this type of advertising, but then he is seen as weak or elite or whatever is thrown at him. In any street fight (and that is what this has become), the one who walks away is the looser and we can't afford that. I am so sad what this is teaching our children - lying is fine (even if you say you are a deeply religious person), saying horrible things about others is sport, and nonsense is news. We are all guilty of the messages we are showing our youth and will reap what we have sown.
CNN, I don't understand why all of my posts are censored....????

And I love Republicans, Mary! They have no problem telling the victim of rape or incest she has no choice but to carry the baby to term to protect that precious abuser's seed's "right to life," but they support the death penalty ... for humans, beluga whales, polar bears, wolves, moose and any of the rest of God's creatures they feel like gunning down.

Not only does this Republican ticket not deserve to be elected, but the last one deserves to be prosecuted.

David in Illinois   September 16th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Obama is on record as being pro-choice. That does NOT make him pro-abortion. The answer to the abortion issue is education and personal conversion. On the education side, Republicans seem to believe sex ed is anathema. But it helps prevent pregnancies that aren't planned. What's wrong with that? Debate birth control and abortion all you want, but education shouldn't be one bit controversial. And NO, Sen. Obama was not pushing sex ed on kindergartners. That dirty commercial from the GOP just goes to show how much they care about the unplanned pregnancy issue.
Oh, and once the babies are born... who's going to take better care of them by supporting a stronger safety net? Not McCain/Palin. Those young moms are on their own!!

Abortion should be women right to chose. Abortion should not be used for birth control methods. I was raped at 13 and became pregant and had a abortion. No child should have to suffer of rape and being pregant, We do not want to repeat history of women dying giving self abortions. Why would you put your daughter through that?
Can you imagine self abortions and sucide would be up? All because the law was reversed. Who is going to take care all these unwanted babies? We have too many in the system not being adopted. With all the failures that is going around who can afford to feed extra mouth when they can't afford to put food on the table for the one they have now?

Yeah, your body, your choice.

Who cares that you chose to have sex, and, surprise surprise, pregnancy resulted! It all goes back to people not wanting to accept responsibility for their actions.

Don't want a baby? Don't have sex.

Want to have sex? Be prepared for the logical consequences of A REPRODUCTIVE ACT.

But, yeah, if you want to kill a child because you are too selfish to accept the consequences of your actions, go right ahead. Its on your conscience (if you have one, which i seriously doubt, due to the fact that you are aborting an innocent baby), not mine.

There are some laws in some states ( I dont know about all states) that you cannot abort past a certain period in your pregnancy. This failed abortion stuff and late term pregnancy abortions I have not heard of.. and do not agree with.

I believe if a woman does not want her child in an early stage is her choice. And especially if its due to rape, incest, or health reasons.

At least Dems give the choice... vs Palin NO CHOICE AT ALL!!

You can talk the Dems into coming half way on this situation... but you cant Budge McCain/Palin on this issue the other way... they wont have it.

At least this woman had a CHOICE. Sarah Palin will take away
women's rights to choose. We are not living in the dark ages. I am

Palin in office, these women won't even have a voice.

Jason, Omaha, NE   September 16th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Gitty, Obama needs to get expirience but Palin doesn't? Obama has been an elected official on the national stage for 11 years and Palin has been for 20 months. It seems to me that you are voting for a women no matter what the women if you support both Hillary and Palin considering their policies couldn't be any more different. Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures.

you people keep saying that palin will make sure that you dont get the right to "choose" but i have to ask you EXACTLY how is palin/mccain going to do that?to answer this quastion you MUST be smart enough to know how the process of sitting a SC justice works. Do you have time to learn this? Understand the process befor eyou start accusing palin/mccain of wanting to tak away your right to choose. KNOW that its the SEANTORS in Congress (including obama, biden, clinton etc) who gets to decide IF the president pick gets the job. We have had a REPUBLICAN PRO LIFE President for 8 years, has he taken away your right to choose? no and he doesnt want to d that. mccain and palin dont agree with abortions but they ARE NOT against YOUR right to choose so get some knowledge before speaking about such a topic.

JV   September 16th, 2008 11:56 am ET

This woman's story only proves that life-saving procedures *are already used* in these circumstances. She was provided life-saving treatement without this unnecessary and litigious law, so would other babies in the same circumstances.

Party Crasher   September 16th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Here's the beauty of Roe vs Wade. It gives the woman the right to make a decision, it does not force her to make a decision. My mother gave birth to me after Roe vs Wade, she made the choice. Nobody told her that she had to have an abortion.

Its funny that the republicans had control of the congress for 6 straight years and the White House for 8 straight years and said nothing about abortions. But every 4 years we see ads for this crap as if it is important.

Abortions are just like television programs, if you don't want to watch it change the channel. If you do not support abortion rights don't have one.

Do not attempt to force your beliefs or values upon someone else unless you are prepared to give up all of your beliefs and values in return.

Last time I checked your abortion or your child birth does not affect me, so keep that crap to yourself.

A part of me hopes that McCain and Palin do get elected and they do make abortion legal. The problem now is that women think it will never happen, they've gotten complacent, they don't think they'll ever lose their reproductive rights and lose control of their own bodies. If McCain/Palin prove them wrong, you'll never see another Republican President or Congress get elected.

Pat - Overland Park, KS   September 16th, 2008 11:53 am ET

I believe that the law that Senator Obama voted against undermined Roe V Wade in it's entirety, not just late-term abortions. You have to read the whole thing not just a section and take it out of context. If you want specifically late-term abortions out-lawed then make that a specific issue.

I am against abortion entirely except in cases of incest, life of the mother or rape, war, the death penalty, poverty in the US, not giving children health care. Republicans – all they make of the pro-life issue is abortion. All of the above mentioned are pro-life issues.

However, Roe V Wade gave women a choice (a safe lawfule choice). I don't believe in abortion used as a birth control method, but I do not want a woman losing her life due to an back alley abortion. It is up to the individual to make that choice and to live with it. We do not have a right to judge.

Think, folks, if abortion were to become illegal again, do you really think it would stop? Did it ever stop, before it was legal? Of course not - but most of you are too young to remember those days. I'm not. Many women and their fetuses died in those days from back room butchers.

JohnM   September 16th, 2008 11:51 am ET

This has nothing to do with Roe v Wade. These babies survived outside of the womb after an abortion attempt. In any definition they are living humans and deserve the same care as anybody else. For Obama not to support this, even with wording saying that it cannot be used to tear down Roe V Wade is disgusting. CNN should not that he did not vote for it even when it clearly stated that it could not be used to overturn Roe V Wade.

As a pro-life/Anti-abortion supporter I could really care less what you do with your body. Get a tattoo, pierce something, brand yourself, shave your head, cut off a limb, I could care less. But the body inside of you is NOT YOU. It is a completely unique living being that deserves the same rights, protections, and priviledges that you are provided in THE Constitution. People ask how can you be religious and be Pro-Choice. It is simple, Why? Because no government should have a right to dictate to its people what they do with their bodies. Isn’t that what the Nazi’s did?

I was born and raised Catholic, I personally do NOT believe in abortion but I am definitely Pro-Choice. I would stand my faith up to any of you religious fanatics any time. If you are truly Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc. it is your job to teach the word of your faith not the government’s job to dictate to all, your beliefs. Remember separation of Church and State. Do your job!!

How can you believe in the Bible, Torah, Curran, etc. and the Ten Commandments and believe in war? Going to war should always be the last choice not the first, especially when it is based on deception and lies, Mr. Bush. I pray for our brave men and women in our military for there safe return home. I surely don’t pray for them to kill as many people as possible. And it makes me sick that some of you so called deeply religious people put God and war in the same sentence, paragraph, thought, etc. Your theology is no different than the Jihad’s we are fighting. Idiots, think, and pray for forgiveness. Don’t you ever use God to justify a war.

Um, I think this vocal minority is missing the point.

My wife and I have no children, yet. If we had ten children in the next twelve years, they would be beautiful, glorious children.

So if we don't have these ten beautiful, glorious children, does that mean we are bad people? Are we wrong for denying life to every sperm in my body or every egg in hers? This debate is getting absurd.

An embryo is not human life. Nor is a tadpole a frog. All humans have a right to reproductive independence. For the right wing lunatics to think that government intervention into people's private decisions is the right thing – well that's just the pinnacle of stupidity. Unfortunately I have come to expect no less from the right wing in this country – a party who has gone so far from its core that it looks more like a group of fascist religious extremists than a legitimate political party.

Lyndon   September 16th, 2008 11:50 am ET

Keep your ideology off of women's bodies. Republicans speak of smaller government, but that's about as egregious and invasive as a government can get.

The most entertaining aspect of this charade is how this commercial is being released in the middle of the worst financial crisis this country has faced, perhaps ever. I see the Repubs are interested in turning the tone of the election back from the plummeting economy and mortgage crisis back to the gotcha games of pigs and abortion. Shame on you.

Enough is enough. Americans won't tolerate this anymore.

1 million abortions every year in the US, 40 million since 1974. Sorry.., but that's not a choice I can support.

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   September 16th, 2008 11:50 am ET

More of the Rovian neocon nuts using the Swift Boat "fear, smear, mock and LIE" strategy they are so proud of.
Bottom line – If women want a choice over their bodies vote Obama, if they want to throw that right away vote McCain.
Pro-Life AND Pro-Choice – Both not either/or.

Tish,NC   September 16th, 2008 11:50 am ET

THE GOP ARE LIARS!!!THEY WILL SAY OR DO ANYTHING TO WIN!!! THIS WOMAN LOOKS LIKE A WITCH!!SHE'S THE SCARY ONE!!RED STATES WAKE UP!! YOU OWE IT TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!!VOTE FOR CHANGE!!

Blank stare   September 16th, 2008 11:50 am ET

I'm glad this is out in the open FINALLY!
I think that Obama's abortion record is abismal and should not be tolerated.

And because Obama has his priorities ALL WRONG, i'm refusing to vote for him.

RIF   September 16th, 2008 11:49 am ET

CNN,

It's funny that you go into great detail about this ad but yesterday you didn't vene mention the ad hitting McCain on his temperment. I'm sure you will give this ad millions of $ in free advertisiment today by running it but the one that hits McCain won't receive the same free ride.

David   September 16th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Democrats are more concerned about the rights of terrorist than innocent children.

Killing a child is killing a child...inside or out side the womb,

nice try McCNN

Jon   September 16th, 2008 11:49 am ET

I love Republicans! They have no problem executing criminals who may or may not be guilty (check how many people have recently been exonerated by DNA, for example), and no problem bombing innocent families in other countries, but they don't want a woman to be able to control her own body. These people do not deserve to be elected!

Eli   September 16th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Philip Butler a POW that has drink way to much of the MESSIAHS kool-aid. I am one of many DEMOCRATS that knew to walk away from the Obama campaign quite early. I guess I am what Obama calls a non-believer and when it comes to him I am proud to say he is right.

American Ariman   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

For everyone on this ticker that has nothing better to do than bash Governor Palin, I say good on you. It is always easier to sit at home or in your office and make fun of someone who is striving to succeed then it is to succeed yourself.

I also think it is a shame that the same people that cry shame on McCain for his comments and his ads can come on to this site and post comments that are even worse than what that man's campaign has said. Don't you realize that you are no better than the man you are criticizing? Sure, you can tell me that you aren't running for President and he is, but we are all American citizens and we should all hold ourselves to a higher standard. Don't you think that if we all responded to positive comments that it would force our politicians to change their tone as well? As long as we continue to sling mud and respond to the negativity then we can look forward to more negativity every time the electoral silly season comes around.

I have sworn my life to the defense of this nation and to the rights of everyone having free speech. It truly saddens me when I see some of the results of the very freedom that we defend.

We as citizens have got to do a better job of being citizens, then and only then can we truly ask our politicians to do the same. These comments on this site are no better than what our politicians are doing and when the campaign staffs read these comments it just fuels their desire to produce more of the same crappy ads bashing each other.

Ex-mod-GOP for Obama   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Gosh, I hate it when the two extreme ends of this issue try to oversimplify it. Abortion is sometimes justified, sometimes not. Since the government can't credibly review every single case to determine when it is and isn't justified they should just stay the heck out. Obama was right that that bill was intended to pull the rug out from under Roe v. Wade and he was right to have the guts to vote against it even though it would provide his political enemies with ammunition.

Joe PA   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

It is a womens body it is her choice not the governments. And I am all for the death penalty also

Rodger   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Watch out Barack, the pro lifers will try to bomb your house next!

Democrat for McCain   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Spencer, are you an idiot? Jessen didn't try to have an abortion, her mother tried to abort her. Roe V. Wade is not going to be undermined or overturned, so why not protect babies who survive abortion attempts?

Independent from GA   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Women who chose to keep the baby or abort the baby are still taking advantage of the fact that American have CHOICES to decide on so I don't think that those anti-abortion people should be complaining. This is exactly what McCain and Palin wants to remove from America.

Jeff Brown   September 16th, 2008 11:48 am ET

And after your born the GOP couldn't care less about you!

Danielle   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

This claim was already proven to be an exaggeration of the truth. Obama himself discussed it after the Saddleback.

This bill was bundled with another bill that criminalized medical professionals for conducting abortions and Obama’s decision was supported by the AMA.

Another McCain ad...another lie.

Tony   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

A BUNCH OF "SELF-PROCLAIMED" EXTREMISTS WHO HAVE NO INTEREST IN KEEPING THE GOVERNMENT FROM TELLING A WOMAN WHAT SHE CAN AND CANNOT DO WITH HER OWN BODY.

I OPPOSE ABORTION AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CHILDREN PUT UP FOR ADOPTION. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO TELL A WOMAN WHAT SHE CAN DO WITH HER OWN BODY.

IF MCCAIN AND PALIN ARE ELECTED, WOMEN CAN KISS ROE V. WADE GODBYE!

YWAM

Ted   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Lie and distort the bill and it's intention...shameful!

Jeff in Illinois   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

There shouldn't be late term abortions in the first place. The Republican mantra: love the fetus, hate the child. Do everything to ensure a fetus is born and then.... let them eat cake. If abortion is a problem in your moral schema.... simple.. don't have one.

Proud to be American   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Can we all agree that a woman have the right to choose... if you do not approve of her choice .... it is still the woman's and she have her cross to bear.... no one..., no President, VP, special group whatever should be involve with a woman and her right to choose.... a vote for McCain will surely reverse Roe vs. Wade.... really do we want woman dying to have an abortion? should we force a raped teen girl to have the rapist baby? Ladies ... I am big on girl power but don't let them take our choice away.... that is just wrong!

Hillary 2012   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Obama you didn’t chose Hillary
SO Face it

ChicagoSuz   September 16th, 2008 11:47 am ET

This is a gross distortion of the truth. There already is/was a law on the books in Illinois that would protect 'born alive infants.' As an attorney, Sen. Obama knew that. This was just a feeble attempt at and end-run around Roe v. Wade. Please don't take us back to the Dark Ages...

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot   September 16th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Choice you religious morons...choice! Many of us don't believe in your pathetic myths.

Teacher from Georgia   September 16th, 2008 11:46 am ET

I am a 24 year old woman that has never had an abortion. I have been a teacher for the past 3 years after I graduated from Valdosta State University with a 3.22 gpa. I have taught in several different school systems from the inner-city to a very rural area. I have seen all types of situations from a 12 year old pregnant girl to a 15 year old pregnant from her father raping her. No one has the right to tell anyone else what decisions they should make. Sarah Palin's daughter made the decision to stay knocked up from a redneck teenager and that is cool...IT WAS HER CHOICE!!!! However, you cannot stop other people from chosing what is right for them. On your website, you have a woman who said she is a product of a failed abortion. For some reason, God wanted her to be here...but her mother did not think it would be a good idea. But now she knows that she has to live with the idea that her mother DID NOT WANT HER!!! How would you feel, I know that I feel great that it was my parents choice that they DID want me! So what would you rather happen? Would you rather that there be a whole bunch of babies being born and then enter into this country's failed adoption and foster care system? Most of those children spend their lives going from foster care home to foster care home and end up in jail at the age of 18. I know, because as a teacher, I have seen it happen. Maybe your mother wants you, but that was her CHOICE!!!! Why do you want to take away the choices afforded to us by this great country that we live in? Because you do, you are no worse than the people we are fighting for overseas for other peoples freedoms. I feel sorry for you!!!!

Jasmyne   September 16th, 2008 11:46 am ET

What the heck is she talking about. She was nearly aborted in 1977, how old was Barack Obama then, 15 or so. Get real. It is now 2008 and thankfully we have the technology to safely complete abortion procedures.

who cares? Go to "you know where".

American Ariman   September 16th, 2008 11:45 am ET

This woman has a powerful story. Unfortunately using it to bash another politician is a shame. Our political process really needs to get beyond using tragic events to promote an agenda. What is worse is two candidates using these unregulated groups to bash their opponents.

Both of them should take the high road. If Obama truly believes that Enough is Enough, then he should stand by that.

At the same time Senator McCain needs to stand up and tell people he has made some mistakes recently and vow to change his ways. If he truly believes that the tone of this campaign could be better by doing joint town hall meetings, then he should take the first step to change the tone of the campaign. You can not continue to have a low self efficacy by blaming the other guy. Be responsible for your own actions.

Politics needs to be more than ads like this.

Breck   September 16th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Politicizing this is a totally disgusting move by this group, and they should be ashamed.

Abby   September 16th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Hispanic For McCain who posted in a previous article – how do you feel that mccain was caught off the mic saying latinos were good for manual labor? When pressed by a reporter who asked "is that all?" mccain smiled and turned away.

Franky   September 16th, 2008 11:44 am ET

So, let me get this straight. They attack my boy's Abortion record, whatever that means AND they attacked Senator McCain's character...yep, you heard it, character.

That's pretty funny, they criticize my boy for Abortion and I wonder what are they gonna do about it, and they criticize McCain as one crazy old man.

I could live Abortion because I'm already used to seeing it, you have any answers, then do it! But with Senator McCain...now that's personal stuff there...

Spencer from VA   September 16th, 2008 11:43 am ET

You fact groups and independent groups need to get your facts together before you go smearing a candidates name. Stop telling half the truth and tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. You just make yourself look stupid. Americans know there are two sides to a story and this ad is just telling one side of it. Tell the truth!!!

Women have a right to choose. Palin will make sure this right is taken away from each and every women in America.

Mark Wagner   September 16th, 2008 11:43 am ET

*yawn* - What a waste of money to attack a Democrat on abortion.

How many anti-choice people support Obama? And if the answer is more than 0, how many of them don't know Obama isn't pro-choice.

Seems like a waste of money and time.

More distortions about Obama's record. As the article points out, "...the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures."

Obama's opponents just keep shooting blindly hoping that eventually, something'll hit. It's a pitiful strategy.

Love my Country!   September 16th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Republicans say they are pro life yet will commit your sons and daughters to war quicker than you can blink your eye.
I am proudly PRO CHOICE!

DMD, New York   September 16th, 2008 11:41 am ET

I think that deep down...EVERYONE knows abortion is a great immorality, no matter how much people holler it's a woman's right to do with her body as she wishes, etc. Deep down, we all know abortion is wrong. Period.

John in Ohio   September 16th, 2008 11:41 am ET

"Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures."

This is like attacking somebody for not voting against a law making theft illegal. It's already illegal! Why make another law?

Oh yeah, because this is a tested and proven dog-whistle issue where the antiabortion activists are exploited by the Republicans to get votes. Republicans had a four year period where they controlled the Presidency, Congress, and the Supreme Court. Did Roe V Wade get overturned? No.

Antiabortionists are the stupidest and most easily manipulated voting block out there.

Donna P.   September 16th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Senator Obama should be ashamed of himself. He and others like him are DISGUSTING. No way should this heartless man run our country. I'm glad Gianna has come forward to show that unwanted and aborted children are human beings.

Anyone who is pro-life wasn't going to vote for Obama in the first place. Who is this ad trying to convince?

Spencer from VA   September 16th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Let's talk about Palin's abortion record. This Jessen lady wouldn't been able to have the abortion in the first place. You can't have it both ways. And if any law undermines Roe V. Wade, I'm against it.

Shari, NY   September 16th, 2008 11:39 am ET

This is a sticky issue and that's why each party should stick to the values they uphold. Incidentally, vegetarians want to know why moose don't have rights to life too.

WHY IS ABORTION EVEN AN ISSUE? WHAT ARE WE IN THE 40'S?!?! GIVE ME A BREAK!!! SORRY RELIGIOUS RIGHT, YOU LOST THIS BATTLE, PEOPLE WOULD HAVE ABORTIONS IF YOU OUTLAWED THEM OR NOT. IF YOU OUTLAWED THEM, PEPOLE WOULD DIE FROM SELF INFLICTED WOUNDS. SO IF YOUR PRO LIFE, THEN YOU SHOULD BE FOR ABORTIONS. WOMEN DIE FROM SELF INDUCED ABORTIONS!
