Obama's abortion record under fire in latest independent ad

A new Independent ad is targeting Obama's abortion record.
A new Independent ad is targeting Obama's abortion record.

(CNN) – A newly formed anti-abortion group is taking direct aim at Barack Obama, launching a television ad in key campaign states that features a 31-year old survivor of an abortion procedure.

The ad is only one of a handful of newly-launched independent television commercials hitting airwaves in recent weeks as the final stretch of the presidential campaign begins.

BornAliveTruth.org, an independent expenditure group known as a 527, is hitting airwaves in New Mexico and Ohio with a 30-second spot that criticizes the Democratic presidential nominee for voting against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in when he was an Illinois state senator. Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures.

Watch: New ad targets Obama on abortion

The group was founded by Jill Stanek, a columnist to the conservative for Web site World Net Daily, who has made controversial statements in the past expressing her opposition of abortion rights. Under the headline “Faithful condom users die,” she wrote on her Web site in March that efforts to post billboards in Tanzania with the words "Faithful Condom Users" next to a picture of a large skeleton should be supported.

The new ad features Gianna Jessen, who survived a late-term abortion procedure in 1977 and says in the ad, "If Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here."

“Can you imagine not giving babies their basic human rights, no matter how they entered our world?" Jessen says in the ad. "Four times, Barack Obama voted to oppose a law to protect babies left to die after a failed abortion. Senator Obama, please support born alive infant protections. I’m living proof these babies have a right to live.”

You fact groups and independent groups need to get your facts together before you go smearing a candidates name. Stop telling half the truth and tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. You just make yourself look stupid. Americans know there are two sides to a story and this ad is just telling one side of it. Tell the truth!!!

So, let me get this straight. They attack my boy's Abortion record, whatever that means AND they attacked Senator McCain's character...yep, you heard it, character.

That's pretty funny, they criticize my boy for Abortion and I wonder what are they gonna do about it, and they criticize McCain as one crazy old man.

I could live Abortion because I'm already used to seeing it, you have any answers, then do it! But with Senator McCain...now that's personal stuff there...

Hispanic For McCain who posted in a previous article – how do you feel that mccain was caught off the mic saying latinos were good for manual labor? When pressed by a reporter who asked "is that all?" mccain smiled and turned away.

Again, misleading and horrible. This only puts undecided women in Obama’s corner. Miscalculate on.

Politicizing this is a totally disgusting move by this group, and they should be ashamed.

This woman has a powerful story. Unfortunately using it to bash another politician is a shame. Our political process really needs to get beyond using tragic events to promote an agenda. What is worse is two candidates using these unregulated groups to bash their opponents.

Both of them should take the high road. If Obama truly believes that Enough is Enough, then he should stand by that.

At the same time Senator McCain needs to stand up and tell people he has made some mistakes recently and vow to change his ways. If he truly believes that the tone of this campaign could be better by doing joint town hall meetings, then he should take the first step to change the tone of the campaign. You can not continue to have a low self efficacy by blaming the other guy. Be responsible for your own actions.

Politics needs to be more than ads like this.

What the heck is she talking about. She was nearly aborted in 1977, how old was Barack Obama then, 15 or so. Get real. It is now 2008 and thankfully we have the technology to safely complete abortion procedures.

  13. Teacher from Georgia

I am a 24 year old woman that has never had an abortion. I have been a teacher for the past 3 years after I graduated from Valdosta State University with a 3.22 gpa. I have taught in several different school systems from the inner-city to a very rural area. I have seen all types of situations from a 12 year old pregnant girl to a 15 year old pregnant from her father raping her. No one has the right to tell anyone else what decisions they should make. Sarah Palin's daughter made the decision to stay knocked up from a redneck teenager and that is cool...IT WAS HER CHOICE!!!! However, you cannot stop other people from chosing what is right for them. On your website, you have a woman who said she is a product of a failed abortion. For some reason, God wanted her to be here...but her mother did not think it would be a good idea. But now she knows that she has to live with the idea that her mother DID NOT WANT HER!!! How would you feel, I know that I feel great that it was my parents choice that they DID want me! So what would you rather happen? Would you rather that there be a whole bunch of babies being born and then enter into this country's failed adoption and foster care system? Most of those children spend their lives going from foster care home to foster care home and end up in jail at the age of 18. I know, because as a teacher, I have seen it happen. Maybe your mother wants you, but that was her CHOICE!!!! Why do you want to take away the choices afforded to us by this great country that we live in? Because you do, you are no worse than the people we are fighting for overseas for other peoples freedoms. I feel sorry for you!!!!

This is a gross distortion of the truth. There already is/was a law on the books in Illinois that would protect 'born alive infants.' As an attorney, Sen. Obama knew that. This was just a feeble attempt at and end-run around Roe v. Wade. Please don't take us back to the Dark Ages...

Can we all agree that a woman have the right to choose... if you do not approve of her choice .... it is still the woman's and she have her cross to bear.... no one..., no President, VP, special group whatever should be involve with a woman and her right to choose.... a vote for McCain will surely reverse Roe vs. Wade.... really do we want woman dying to have an abortion? should we force a raped teen girl to have the rapist baby? Ladies ... I am big on girl power but don't let them take our choice away.... that is just wrong!

There shouldn't be late term abortions in the first place. The Republican mantra: love the fetus, hate the child. Do everything to ensure a fetus is born and then.... let them eat cake. If abortion is a problem in your moral schema.... simple.. don't have one.

A BUNCH OF "SELF-PROCLAIMED" EXTREMISTS WHO HAVE NO INTEREST IN KEEPING THE GOVERNMENT FROM TELLING A WOMAN WHAT SHE CAN AND CANNOT DO WITH HER OWN BODY.

I OPPOSE ABORTION AND WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE CHILDREN PUT UP FOR ADOPTION. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO RIGHT TO TELL A WOMAN WHAT SHE CAN DO WITH HER OWN BODY.

IF MCCAIN AND PALIN ARE ELECTED, WOMEN CAN KISS ROE V. WADE GODBYE!

This claim was already proven to be an exaggeration of the truth. Obama himself discussed it after the Saddleback.

This bill was bundled with another bill that criminalized medical professionals for conducting abortions and Obama’s decision was supported by the AMA.

    Another McCain ad...another lie.

Women who chose to keep the baby or abort the baby are still taking advantage of the fact that American have CHOICES to decide on so I don't think that those anti-abortion people should be complaining. This is exactly what McCain and Palin wants to remove from America.

Spencer, are you an idiot? Jessen didn't try to have an abortion, her mother tried to abort her. Roe V. Wade is not going to be undermined or overturned, so why not protect babies who survive abortion attempts?
