Obama's abortion record under fire in latest independent ad

A new Independent ad is targeting Obama's abortion record.
A new Independent ad is targeting Obama's abortion record.

(CNN) – A newly formed anti-abortion group is taking direct aim at Barack Obama, launching a television ad in key campaign states that features a 31-year old survivor of an abortion procedure.

The ad is only one of a handful of newly-launched independent television commercials hitting airwaves in recent weeks as the final stretch of the presidential campaign begins.

BornAliveTruth.org, an independent expenditure group known as a 527, is hitting airwaves in New Mexico and Ohio with a 30-second spot that criticizes the Democratic presidential nominee for voting against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in when he was an Illinois state senator. Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures.

Watch: New ad targets Obama on abortion

The group was founded by Jill Stanek, a columnist to the conservative for Web site World Net Daily, who has made controversial statements in the past expressing her opposition of abortion rights. Under the headline “Faithful condom users die,” she wrote on her Web site in March that efforts to post billboards in Tanzania with the words "Faithful Condom Users" next to a picture of a large skeleton should be supported.

The new ad features Gianna Jessen, who survived a late-term abortion procedure in 1977 and says in the ad, "If Barack Obama had his way, I wouldn't be here."

“Can you imagine not giving babies their basic human rights, no matter how they entered our world?" Jessen says in the ad. "Four times, Barack Obama voted to oppose a law to protect babies left to die after a failed abortion. Senator Obama, please support born alive infant protections. I’m living proof these babies have a right to live.”

It is a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. So are they saying if a woman is raped or by incest becomes pregnant she MUST have the child.

As a woman would it not already be a burden to carry for the rest of your life being raped much less to have to go through 9 months and deliver a child by someone who violated you so terribly.

Come on people get real. This is a choice of an individual woman not the government to make a life decision for anyone.

Here we go again, trying to push abortion as a theme for the presidential campaign, this is becoming to much of the norm, and I really think this just exploits the issue rather then effective solutions to help curve abortions. The issue of abortion is not the single most important issue in a presidential candidate or for choosing a president, this is a personal, emotional, spiritual and private discussion that folks continue to use as persuasion for social conservatives to vote for repubs every 4 years. This exploitation will not work in this election. The one thing I do agree with Sen. Obama is that, we need to curve abortions and we need to find ways in prevention. I have worked with teens in peer programs, and let me tell you, abortion has no discrimmination or political party, this is happening to girls from all various walks of life. So instead of shouting about out about a political party record on abortion, they ad should have discussed what they can do about curving the percentages of abortions in this country. HELLO!

For those of you that are blindly going along with a 30 second ad, maybe you should take a few minutes to research why he rejected these proposals. Maybe they held doctors liable, maybe they had many other proposals added on to them. Research people!!!!

This is more about Obama's official stand on the subject: "...it is above my pay grade"

I would have more respect for Obama if he actually told us his opinion on SOMETHING.

This goes back to 1977...Don't you think we've come along way from then. I think we women need to be given that choice. Ken & Barbie want to take that choice from us....No Way, No McCain, No Palin....

Dumocraps support genocide. Only dumocraps are responsible for the violence in this country through supporting mothers killing children. Proven fact!

31 years ago Obama was how old? If he is 47 today then certainly he was only 16 years old.

Just take a look at the woman in the ad. Is she not one pi**ed off looking woman who is exactly the kind of woman you would expect to see in this type of ad?

    So typical of these whack-jobs.

If a woman values her right to her own body then they will voter for Obama and Biden. If they want to remain subservient and submissive then they will vote for McCain and Palin.

    Simple as that.

This ad will only influence the pro choice demographic that already supports Mccain. So I don't see it's point

  10. America the Stupid

It is a completely unique living being that deserves the same rights, protections, and privileges that you are provided in THE Constitution.

Nope, your wrong. Sorry. Babies don't have constitution rights.

And, if you are such a bible thumper, then children are subject to anything the parents want to do, including killing them if they act up and selling them.

Why don't you try reading that book you praise so much, you might be surprised what you read....

The law on abortion isn't going to change no matter who is President. It just isn't. Is one single hopeless issue more important than a dozen others that Obama will do better at?
Its naive of them to think this issue is more important than the health care of every single American young and old and not sending our children to die later.
That's the big contradiction with anti-abortion groups. They are for the life of an unborn child, but once you've been born, tough cookies. They want to send you off to die in a war or execute you for trivial non-felonies.

Labeling someone an "abortion survivor" is ludicrous. It really sickens me that religious nuts think they have the right to enforce their questionable morals on those who don't suffer from the same beliefs. What's next in their ads, recovered homosexuals coming out against Obama for supporting gay rights?

Keep religion out of politics and keep it out of public policy.

  14. Obamas Toast

The Obamabots smell fear. Obama is tanking in all of the national, state and electoral polls each and every day. When McCain & Palin wipe the floor with the desperate duo at the next 3 debates, Obama will never catch up. I for one will be glad to see him disappear and high tail it back to Chicago.

  15. McCain is Shameless

Aimed at the crazies. Typical of GOP smear tactics. Mitt Romney is disgusting. Sterotypical hypocrite. Go to church on Sunday, tell everyone how much you love God and Jesus, and act like a jerk for the rest of the week, lying, cheating and misleading people. And then demanding that you need to make their choices for them. Really repulsive. This commercial is laughable. It looks like an SNL skit if it wasn't so base.

If the procedure was done in 1977 and Obama wasnt in politics until the 90's how exactly is this his fault?

That is the problem with our country...too many abortions. I think the reason most women are for abortion is because they have had one and want to feel that it is okay...but it is not. Abortion kills the unborn and ruins lives.

  18. lol election

Are you against abortion? Well thats simple, just don't have one! thats what it means being pro-choice, no one forces people to get abortions, but yet groups out there want to force women to carry their pregnancies.

Its called choice for a reason, this means that you are free to choose and live with the consequences of your actions.

Ok we can outlaw abortion, then what should the punishment be for those who get and illegal abortion?

Ask that to the pro-lifers, What punishment should the government give for those who seek illegal abortions?

In 1977???? Obama wasn't even in the Senate then!! Why on earth should this matter? Not to mention procedures are much safer now... This is just crazy.

This is NOT an anti-abortion issue!

It's about saving babies whose mother tried to abort them, but the operation failed, and the babies survived!

Supporting keeping a baby alive is NOT going to overturn Roe v. Wade!

How can ANYONE be against keeping a baby alive?

    Another reason to vote Obama.

Fantatical nut jobs like this group wanting to trash the constitution of the United States and order us what to do with our thoughts, mind, body and speach need to get the hell out of OUR country. Go live in a communist nation.

Mary....you my dear need to try to open up the very dense area just above your neck (i.e. ur brain) .....quit attacking democrats. Most of us are against abortions. However, we feel a woman should have the right to choose. Further, democrats work harder to see that every child has a home, decent education and healthcare. Remember idiots like Palin and Guilliani making jokes about Barack being a community organizer? That's what those people.

    Yet I digress......

If we use your idiot logic – Republicans would rather a mother be forced to have the child and the infant die in gutter from starvation, disease; as the parents won't be able to get a job under failed GOP policies. Or they can be drafted for McCain's next war and get to see the world before being shot or blown up (if they're lucky).

Now Mary...try thinking a little bit more than using the same childish and STUPID approach your party is so regularly known.

"Obama has said the Illinois state Senate version of that bill was an attempt to undermine Roe vs. Wade, and said Illinois already had a law that insured life saving treatment was given to survivors of abortion procedures."

So then, she's a survivor of the existing law that insured life saving treatment to survivors of abortion procedures.

So the existing law works; what's the problem here?
