Palin hammers Obama on taxes in Ohio

Palin ripped Obama on the economy Tuesday.
Palin ripped Obama on the economy Tuesday.

VIENNA, Ohio (CNN) – With a strong anti-NAFTA sentiment and a heavy union presence, the Mahoning Valley in northeast Ohio isn’t exactly prime Republican territory.

But that’s exactly where John McCain and Sarah Palin took their road show on Tuesday, hoping to steal some votes from Barack Obama in a region of the state where Hillary Clinton reigned supreme during the Ohio Democratic primary.

“We’re making that foray,” said one campaign adviser. “It’s good to play offense.”

Introducing McCain for the first time since she traveled to Alaska last week, Palin kept the focus on jobs and the economy as Wall Street woes dominated the headlines for the second straight day. She laid into the Democratic ticket, accusing Obama of wanting to raise payroll taxes, business taxes, investment income taxes and the estate tax.

“Here’s a little straight talk for our opponent,” Palin said, using her running mate’s signature phrase.

“His tax plans really would kill jobs and hurt small businesses and make even today’s bad economy look like the good old days.”

Palin's claims aren't exactly accurate: Obama would maintain the Bush tax cuts and offer tax breaks to individuals making under $250,000 a year. According to the non-partisan Center for Tax Policy, Obama’s tax plan would offer greater tax relief than McCain's for low and middle-income earners, but McCain's plan would lower the tax burden more across the board.

As she did in Colorado on Monday, Palin linked the campaign's economic pitch to her small town roots.

“Our family, like your families, we know that the best way to help small businesses is for government to take less from them, leave more for them so that they can expand and create jobs,” Palin said. “It's a pretty simple principle.”

Several voters in the audience said they were supporting McCain and Palin because they favor lower taxes.

Joyce Kish, an elementary school teacher's aide who attended the rally with her three sisters-in-law, said taxes and employment are her top issues in the election. She said the Valley was suffering from the loss of manufacturing jobs, and that the two Republicans on stage had the managerial experience to fix the economy. All four women said they were adamantly opposed to abortion rights.

When Palin finished her introduction of McCain, scores of voters soon proceeded to file out of the venue, one more sign that the Alaska governor is the force behind the ballooning crowds that have turned out for McCain in recent weeks.

These voters need to realize that they would receive more tax relief under Obama's tax plan than under McCain's. They also don't realize that those in the top earning bracket receive an overwhelming amount of tax relief, as opposed to none from Obama.

Blue collar workers voting for McCain are voting the wrong way. Do some reading and research and look it up for yourself.

The Republican strategy: lie, lie and lie some more. Too bad the American people have caught on to your tactic. You are the weakest link... good-bye.

what a shame. You still repeat your lies again and again, and it's amazing how you everytime find voters, that are DUMB as a bucket of shrimp to believe your lies... poor, poor country, but not in belonging to the finance-situation but to the education...
And shame on McCain that his running mate is a lot more famous than he is, one has to ask them, who they believe is running for president, McSame or Scara Failin... These two clowns are jokes, simply jokes, that aren't going to reform anything but their own paychecks...
It's a shame this race is still tied, but this is an economic-based week so it's Obama&Dems-Week, and by the way, the attention or Sarah "Mrs. Vengeance" Failin is shrinking...until the result of troopergate. She IS hiding the reality, why else did she deny any kind of cooperation with investigators? SHE is a really DANGER for our country, and if America lets her walk into Oval Office...then we are not just lost but also dumb as a bucket of shrimp...

    Obama/Biden by landslide!

Palin wouldn't know straight talk if it smacked in the head. I live in Alaska and make no mistake we are well aware of her double speak. If you live in the lower 48 and your charmed by her appearance – don't be. She will not hesitate to skewer you to obtain her own personal gain. She will lie if she needs to and in her own words "will not blink."

Palin, like McCain doesn't have a clue about our economy. She left her country in debt many times. She lowered taxes in one sense, but raised them in others and has caused Alaska to go in debt. She, like McCain lies, and lies, and lies and continues to lie to impress the voters. She lied about being open and forthright about the ongoing investigation about the trooper and is now trying to stop the investigation because she doesn't want to be exposed. AMERICA WAKE UP!!!

  12. McCain for Pres.

Obama tries to tell you he will only raise taxes on people making over 250,000 dollars which is partly true. What he doesn't tell you is they are usually professional people and businesses, and they will just raise their prices and WE will be the ones who pay for their tax hikes.

    "Palin's claims aren't exactly accurate...."

    Nice. That's progress.

How this country could be considering the election of this ticket when it freezes out questions it doesn't like, won't cooperate with an ethics investigation and has levied nothing less than a steady stream of "not exactly accurate" attacks makes my head spin.

Did Palin actually take any questions from reporrters today, or just read the note cards provided by Bush's speechwriters? When is she going to act like a real VP candidate and not a spokesmodel? What a prima donna.

here's a little straight talk... "I'm going to lie to all of you about Obama's tax plan and how bad it is... and then I'm not going to give you any details about ours. And then I expect all of you to cheer mindlessly. And Oh... I can see Russian from my back yard."

Great job, Palin! And Obama is making up facts about his own record, he claimed stimulus package was his idea. Not even Democrats support his claim. Obama doesn't have any record, so he just made up some. How pathetic!
