Rep Charlie Rangel plans to hire forensic accountants to investigate his finances.
Rep Charlie Rangel plans to hire forensic accountants to investigate his finances.

WASHINGTON (CNN)–A lawyer for Rep. Charlie Rangel, the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said Monday that the powerful New York Democrat would hire forensic accountants to investigate his financial statements that span two decades.

Lanny Davis said the firm, which has yet to be hired, would review Rangel’s tax returns and other financial documents over the last 20 years and compile a report on any financial improprieties or back taxes the chairman owed. Rangel would pay any back taxes he owed with penalties and would wave the normal three-year statute of limitations, Davis said.

The firm will send its report on Rangel’s finances directly to the House Ethics Committee, which is looking into Rangel’s finances after questions were raised about some real estate transactions. Rangel has admitted he owes $5,000 in back taxes after he failed to report income from a rental property in Florida, according to the Associated Press.

Davis said Rangel said asked for the independent investigation because “he never meant to conceal” his finances.

“He wanted to show in as many ways he has possibly could, that he did not do anything intentionally wrong,” Davis said.

Despite news reports, Rangel was not pressured by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to step down from his chairmanship while the investigation into his finances was underway, Davis said.

“Indeed, the speaker told Mr. Rangel that she was pleased that Mr. Rangel had initiated an investigation of himself with full transparency,” Davis said.

First he says foreign policy is his strength. Then he admits he knows little about the economy. He isn't winning his base, so he continues to throw fear into Americans by talking about terrorism, and he and only he can save us. Still he drags behind in the polls. Then he adds a women to pick up the Hillary vote, conveniently after Obama doesn't pick Clinton as a VP. Now McCain gets Americas attention, not because he can help this country, but because of Palin. Then he adds Obamas message of change. He is running against his own party because it has failed us so badly. Now he is stealing enough is enough. Why is America falling for this. It is all stated in another article in this Blog site! Obama is black, only half black, but black enough on the outside for all of the uneducated hate filled people in this country to not vote for him. If any of them cared to read his book, they would see a man that came from a very poor, one parent household. To a man that turned down wall street and all of the money that he could have made, so he could help the people that didn't have anything. He helped kids go to school, and get off drugs. He helped people find jobs, and housing. He also helped people find medical help. That is the life of a community organizer. The GOP has painted it to be a trouble maker??? America, if you had to pick these candidates without seeing them, what would you choose? Would it be someone that champions the current economic direction of this county, that is playing games with the American people, that hasn't a clue how many homes he owns, or would it be the community organizer that has lived just like the rest of us?

You know what the problem with Americans is? We have way too much idle time to sit around in an environment that is better than 90% of the rest of the world and complain about lies the media is throwing at us. Think for yourself.
McCain is old and will run this country further into the ground than Bush already has.
Palin is over her head and doesnt know her pig from a hole in the ground....even if it has lipstick on it!
Rock On Obama! Woooohoooo.

Just read that John McCain said, and I quote, "I can keep your jobs safe". Is he kidding?!!? John McCain is one of the biggest supporters of off-shore jobs. He encourages big corporations to hire overseas.
The Republican ticket is a joke.....what a mess they have become.

Nice to see Cafferty dragging race into the campaigns again. This country will never heal as long as there are people like Cafferty and Sharpton around to stir up trouble and make a nice living off of it. It is not enough that Obama won in states where 90% of the voters were white, not enough that he is the first African/white american to be nominated for a major party for POTUS. They would have us blackmailed into voting for him JUST BECAUSE he is black or we are automatically racist, nevermind qualifications. It is sick and it is what drove me from the corrupt Dem party.

While they are at it lets just go through a bunch more. How did Obama qualify for his fancy property and build the home. How much has he hid through contractors and real estate agents. But the Main thing I want to see is his full list of donors since the roomer is they have recieved some through the Bank of China and Saudi Arabia and a couple UK countries. Then next who are his 2300 advisors and just why does he need so many. Is that who will be running the country and use hime for a fron man if he should get elected?

Rangel is a crook like Dodd and Schumer and Biden and Barney Frank all could have regulated the mortgage companies, but they took too much political contributions from them to do that.Than they let them get away with taking millions in servance pay after ruining the company. Now the Tax Payer yes You and I will have to get stuck bailing them out instead of them going to jail. Obiden lives in the pocket of the banks that hold the credit cards, just look at where all the bank card companies are DELAWARE. This is entirely appropriate. Millions of Americans lie or mess up their tax returns. Why? Because the Internal Revenue Code is a mess! All you tax-reformers out there know this. When you're got this much money, things get messed up.

Not the Congressman is offering to have his records reviewed for the last two decades to ensure all of his finances were properly reported. This kind of transparency screams that what has happened was a simple mistake. If it turns out that he's been cheating for years, he can always be removed from office.

sandee in Portland   September 16th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

This is news! He's not the first politician to get in trouble and he won't be the last no matter which party wins the White House.

Let's talk about the economy instead and why we are in the trouble we're in. Could it be because McCain and the Republicans voted for deregulating the industry? Yep, I think so. There needs to be government regulations on all types of industry and the Republicans voted to get them taken away and well as voting to give tax breaks to companies that moved overseas. When you take away the rules and encourage our great American manufacturing companies to move out, what do you have left. Service industry jobs at a much lower pay scale than those that are gone. This country cannot survive on the average worker being in a service related industry. Sure, McCain says our workers are the best...and they are. It's just that their jobs are being taken away because manufacturing companies are going where labor is cheaper and they get a tax break for doing so.

I have never been into politics all that much but have voted in every election as a Republican. This year I, like many of the people, are really into it. I admit I voted for Bush (I was stupid) the first time, but voted for Kerry the second time because I could see where our country was heading. If you in all honesty can say you are happy with the direction our country is heading, then vote for McCain. If you are unhappy, vote for Obama. Most older people don't accept change easily. I know because I am one, but this is a time when we need change the most.

Rick   September 16th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

The Congress has made the tax code so ridiculously complex not even someone who writes tax laws can get it right. The following proposal will fix that in a hurry.

All members of Congress and the President, as the person who signs all legislation, would be required to accurately complete their tax returns without the use of tax accountants or a third party tax preparer on any kind (and would have to swear under oath and penalty of perjury to the same). All such returns would be subject to an annual audit by the IRS. The penalty for any mistakes resulting in underpayment of taxes would be (pick a number) 10 times the amount of the tax due.

Bet that would simplify the code in a hurry.

Larry, CA   September 16th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Blah, blah, blah.....another Congressman who is above the people.

Spare me. If you really want to do something you will stop Congressman and women from naming buildings, etc. after themselves with our tax dollars. It's shameful.

Way to go, Representative Rangel !! That's the bedrock of American justice: Innocent until proven guilty !! Let's not forget that, please. If Governor Palin is entitled to the presumption of innocence, concerning her abuse of power with regards to the Top Cop, for not firing her ex-brother-in-law, than Representative Rangel is entitled to the same presumption of innocence !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

beth - Alaska   September 16th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Rangel is hoping that Obama wins so that he could pardon him.

Barbara - NC   September 16th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Yeah – we've heard that before. Wasn't it Palin (R) that said she would cooperate also?

If they are in office, boot them out.

If they are NOT in office, do NOT put them in.

Vote the incumbents out, and screen the potentials within a millimeter of their lives.

And this is important, why?

Why don't we investigate Bush's Harken stock dumping?

Sacto Joe   September 16th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

WHO CARES, CNN!

Where's the discussion on the failure of the Bush/Cheney Administration to protect the economy?

Where's the discussion on Senator McCain's failure to understand the economy's problems?

Where's the discussion on the utter ignorance of Governor Palin when it comes to the U.S. economy?
