Obama is up in New Jersey.
Obama is up in New Jersey.

(CNN) — A new CNN poll of polls suggests that Barack Obama has a 7 point lead over John McCain in battle for New Jersey and its 15 electoral votes.

The CNN poll of polls is an average of the latest public opinion surveys. The latest New Jersey edition consists of a Quinnipiac University poll conducted September 10-14, a Monmouth University/Gannett survey taken September 11-14, and a Research 2000 poll conducted September 9-11.

Earlier: Obama, McCain tied nationally

When averaged together, 49 percent of likely New Jersey voters say Obama is their choice for president, with 42 percent backing McCain. Nine percent are undecided.

Related: Check out CNN's Electoral Map

Vice President Al Gore won New Jersey by 16 points over then-Texas Governor George W. Bush in the 2000 election. Senator John Kerry defeated President George W. Bush in the Garden State by 7 points four years ago.

This time around, CNN currently considers New Jersey a state that leans towards Senator Obama. Neither campaign has spent a lot of time or money in New Jersey the past few months. Obama attended a few fundraisers in the state a few weeks ago, but hasn't actively campaigned there in months. John McCain hasn't attended an event in New Jersey since May.

The Republican liars will be handily defeated in November. All those that voted for Bush and the Republican culture of corruption are responsible for the fiasco we now find ourselves in. Yet…a voter won't take responsibility for pulling the lever in the voting booth. But yes..all Republicans are responsible for trashing and decimating this country.

B Rhodes   September 16th, 2008 10:46 am ET

"As a NJ resident and a Democrat, I will not be voting for BO or any of the Democrataic ticket."

If I had a dime for every paid McCain campaign blogger who pretended to be a disillusioned Democrat, I could fill my Hummer's gas tank for a year.

JIm Howell   September 16th, 2008 10:46 am ET

The headline title seems a "bit" misleading. The actual data shows the lead in New Jersey has fallen recently. The headline at first glance seems to being telling us the he has a new/bigeer lead. Are you run by the same people who run "US" magazine. Please give us an honest title to the article. How about something like, "Obama lead shrinks in New Jersey". Don't you think this more accurately conveys the content of the article. He is leading and the lead is shrinking.

Not so fast   September 16th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I'm a democrat/independent, but those of us who know the Garden State realize that NJ is completely up-for-grabs this election. Plenty of NJ folks are upset at the Democratic Governor for raising tolls and the sacred sales-tax (a huge no-no). Corzine is doomed next election, and many NJ folks may take out that aggression on Obama.

Love my Country!   September 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Love My USA – wow you just named the reasons I could not in good conscience vote for the reputhiclans. By the way – it is very difficult for the dems in the house and senate to do anything with the constant filibusters by the repugs and the endless vetoes of the pres who has used his veto over 500 times in the last two years. Go check the facts. But you won't, your obviously a repugclian.

Matthew   September 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

It's sad for Dems if we have to celebrate the fact that Obama is up 7 in NJ. It's NEW JERSEY for crying out loud!!! Hillary would have been up 20 right now and wouldn't have had to spend time and money shoring up support in what is obviously a blue state.

brian   September 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Guys, we all know CNN, MSNBC, ABC are in the tank for Obama. The more these guys are biased towards Obama – better it is for Mccain- Palin. People are disgusted with these channels and biased media. And it is showing. Its like out right hatred towards them. And looking at falling TRP ratings and viewer ship shows how low they have gone.

FOOLS, STOP TELLING US WHOM TO VOTE- WE KNOW BETTER THAN YOU.

Matt   September 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

The republicans need to stop whining and playing the victim card. Truly, it is getting old and it is incredibly transparent. All they're doing is trying to fabricate a false sense of media bias so they can discredit any report that points out the lies the McCain/Palin campaign is selling the American public.

Realistic   September 16th, 2008 10:44 am ET

It's over for Obama. Look at the electoral map at Real Clear Politics. During the last of the Democratic Primary season, Obama was losing all of the latest races and yet the super delegates failed to do their job and choose the candidate that could have won. In the final analysis, the thought of Obama, Reed, and Pelosi leading our great country will push the average citizien away from the Democrats and will result in a landslide for McCain.

anon   September 16th, 2008 10:43 am ET

What's next, CNN, report on Obama up in California and Vermont and McCain up in Oklahoma and Nebraska?

Is this news or just a way to give your Chosen One some positive spin since his national numbers are falling?

dan   September 16th, 2008 10:41 am ET

CNN, your intellectual dishonesty is 2nd only to MSNBC. You fail to mention that Obama's 7 point lead is LESS than what it was previously. He has slipped in the polls in most every state…so it that why you picked one with a 7 point lead to make it appear that he is doing well?

You guys are pathetic and losing credibility with informed Americans.

Lost Old man   September 16th, 2008 10:40 am ET

McCain had a nice bounce comming-out of the convention, but what goes up must come down and when the ball tries to bounce, trust this time it will be FLAT.

I'm sure McCain is a good father, husband, and grandpa, but he is 72! He may be good as a drinking buddy and telling war stories, but the President? Come on folks. I have no comment on Palin because I don't know of her and what I've heard thusfar leaves me very worried. My 6th grade teacher was more qualified than she is.

CNN IS SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS FALSE NEWS THAT it looks like OB runs for president on behalf of CNN, what a crazy media…..

Dennis, Midland Texas   September 16th, 2008 10:38 am ET

We've got a lot of deranged people in this country. Amazing that people, regardless of their political party affiliation, are still considering voting for the Dishonorable McCain/Palin slate. Loyalty to the ideas of a party is okay, blind loyalty to anything is a mental disease. It's like being a slave by one's own hand.

Charlie   September 16th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Just face it: U.S. voters will not vote for a "person of color" for president. All they need to vote for the other side is an excuse such as "they chose a woman for VP – of course I am going to vote for them". It doesn't matter what the other party stands for – at the end, the only matter of importance will be skin color.

Mercedes   September 16th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Some advice from your neighbour to the north…to many polls to many theorys and opinions. Why not report the NEWS as it happens and let the people decide who to vote for. Canada is having an election October 14th…I will listen to the candidates and decide who to vote for…not a News Team on Television. By the way CNN should be spending more time on the real issue of the day…the help for those in need after the recent hurricanes.

Mccain Palin are two of the dumbest politicians I have ever seen. If you support them then you are probably pretty stupid too.

JusLaugh   September 16th, 2008 10:30 am ET

I really think Obama is much further ahead in the polls than any media outlet will report.

I refuse to believe that we are stupid enough to keep the country in such incompetent hands as the republicans.

It's not good for ratings to report a landslide, though, so the media has to keep the polls close.

Unimportant NJ   September 16th, 2008 10:28 am ET

John McCain has not attended any event in NJ because he does not consider NJ voters to be important. He is everywhere but.

Alaskan Governor Palin is no Hilary. No comparison. She is pretty, all right. And I see McCain campaign is using her effectively not because she is of substance, which Hilary was/is, but because she is a woman and maybe some of us foolish women who used to Hilary might be fooled into supporting Palin because of her gender. Talk about sexist politics!!!

No way. No how. No McCain. No Palin!!!

Ah yes NJ, the garbage state, with it's radical garbage Left-Wing populous, and some of the nation's most corrupt state politics under a garbage Left-Wing plutocratic dictatorship. No big surprise that the brainwashed people of NJ support big Left-Wing Chicago garbage for President. Is this article suppose to be news worthy? NJ always votes Left.

Why is it that Left-Wing states all historically have had the same problems for years? – high taxes / high cost of living, highest electric rates, high rates of violent crime, high levels of state corruption, the worst public school systems, highest levels of illegal alien populations, and some of worst environmental records. Yeah, sounds like those Left-Wing policies are just what the rest of the country needs too – (failed Left-Wing moronic schemes, and more tax & spend).

Don't forget mention that NJ has some of the most rudest, apathetic, and elitist people in the entire country – typical behavior of radical Left-know-it-alls.

Roland   September 16th, 2008 10:25 am ET

These polls don't mean diddly. The poll which counts will be taken on November 4! Make sure you are registered to vote. Sign up for your absentee ballot if needed. And VOTE!

We can't handle another four years of a Senate and White House like we've had the previous eight!

Please CNN…….. the polls are becoming just plain silly! WE KNOW ITS GOING TO BE A TIGHT RACE……..IT IS A TIGHT RACE.

The thing is that there are a lot of people who are still on the fence (my husband for one). There are also a lot of people who can not be polled, those millions with cell phones, this includes a vast number of adults in their 40's and 50's. Cell phones have changed things for pollsters.

I am praying and hoping that America will wake up! And that we will look around and SEE ALL the FAILURES OF THE BUSH/CHENEY/MCCAIN/GOP TENURE (YEARS) AND SAY………..ENOUGH!

Go spend a week in COUNTIES where Obama is up big and ones where McCain is up big. You will see there is two Americas, and the blue America is the worst of our nation and the red is an America that is worthy of being proud of.

As the Palin lies come out and the McCain campaign is constantly called out for its lies by the media, which I must say I'm glad CNN is finally holding McCain to account as well as Palin, the numbers will improve across the country. This is not a beauty contest where you can reinvent yourself, your campaign or your record.

Although NJ is clearly going to Obama, it does have some very republican parts of the state. My county system is very Republican, as well as some other McMansion parts of the state.

The higher the favor for Obama, the better shot we have at capturing certain districts in the House. Our 3rd and our 7th are HUGE races this year, and hearing he's up universally is still good for state poitics.(and in turn, Congressional politics)

Ryan .. NJ is a very diverse state that represents what the country looks like. It is also a very blue state. NJ also chose Hillary and there is a ton of Independent voters.
The Democratic Gov. Corzine has a low approval rating and if Christie runs against him in November it will be a close race. That spells trouble for Obama. In NJ Obama should be up by a lot more than 7 … that's the point.

Me-Ohio   September 16th, 2008 9:58 am ET

they need to keep it on Ohio, Mich, Colorado, Nev, MN, and maybe 1-2 more thats it, the rest are going to go the way they always go. This is mainly because liberals and conservatives have been moving to states where they are the majority and not the minority. I think we need to keep an eye on the newly registered voter numbers in these states and the youth vote…the two things polls are not counting.

What next? Are you going to tell us Obama is ahead in California?

Why don't you tell people that Obama lost his lead in Pennsylvania, and it's now listed as a tie?

You're really hurting to make your golden child look like he's doing well, CNN.

Melinda Charlotte, NC   September 16th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Why not a poll of polls that shows McCain up in NC? GA? AL? FL? CNN, your bias is showing, and it is disgusting. You want to put info up on the ticker about how the Dems are doing to make them look good. Go ahead. You should do the same about the Republicans. My comment will not be posted, and I do not care. I support McCain/ Palin, and these types of tactics from the MSM only ensure victory for the Republicans.

Maggie   September 16th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Why doesn't CNN tell us about the Florida change? That's a bigger electoral state than New Jersey. But I suppose Florida is now showing for McCain so its not news for CNN. Only when there is a change to the Obama side we see CNN showing it as a news item but when the change is for McCain we do not hear anything about it.

The more this presidential race unfolds, the more terrified I get over the prospect that McCain/Palin could win in November. I don't know what America is thinking if it puts these two in the White House. We have gone "to the dogs" during the 8 years that George Bush has been President and we will absolutely slide off the map if John McCain and Sarah Palin are elected as our leaders. We have lost our image as the strongest country in the world and we will only be at the mercy of other countries if we don't wake up and make a change!!!!! America, wake up! We can make a difference and dig ourselves out of this quagmire that we now find ourselves in. If McCain is elected President, we need to follow "God Bless America" with "God Help America". We will be the laughing stock of the world!!!!!!

VA Woman for Obama   September 16th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Hopefully this is the start of an upward trend for Obama!

CNN—you must think we are stupid.

I have three brothers-in-law in New Jersey. It gives me a lot of pleasure to know that their votes for McCain/Palin won't count for anything in the general.

She won't talk to reporters, she won't cooperate with a legal inquiry into her actions, and then the republicans wonder why people question her ability as if it's because she is a female. WAKE UP FOOLS.

Tom in Delaware   September 16th, 2008 9:38 am ET

I personally don't have any respect for CNN's 'Poll of Polls' because it's always in such stark contrast to all other polling institutions that have made polling their sole business long before CNN was even conceived.

I wonder if you'll have the guts to retract your lofty claims after McCain takes New Jersey in a landslide.

You guys still haven't come clean about the finding of 550 metric tonnes of Uranium Yellowcake in Iraq, effectively debunking the whole "Lies led to War" garbage.

Try just reporting the news instead of shaping it.

Spencer from VA   September 16th, 2008 9:35 am ET

And i'm sure we are growing leads in other states as well. So Minnesota can be a toss up. After the backlash of McSame's economy comments, we'll have leads in alot more states.

Our economy is in great despair. Only average Americans know because they are being affected the most. New Jersey is smart for supporting Obama. McCain could care less because his wife is worth 100 million.

Milton, Harrisburg, PA   September 16th, 2008 9:31 am ET

One of the unspoken but critically important aspects of this race is race. 8% of voters surveyed said that they wouldn't vote for a black man for President NO MATTER WHAT. This is essentially the racist voter that McCain can count on. Now if there are 8% of Americans that are willing to admit this to a pollster, how many do you think have the same view but aren't willing to admit that they are essentially racist to a pollster? Most pundits estimate that the number is about 15%. This, more than anything explains why Obama has a slim lead in an election year that should be an easy landslide victory for the Democrats. I mean really, what SINGLE success do Republicans have to point to during the G.W. years? Economy? Immigration? Foreign Relations? Environment? Energy? Exactly. That's why McCain doesn't want to talk about any of them.

I hope we can overcome the racist vote margin and see the right man get in office. Let's not move our country backward.

I womder why CNN always "cherry picks" the polls? Is it because they want to arrive at a particular conclusion. Check the Rasmussen and Zogby polls (both gold standard), one has it at 3 points and the other 5 points. If you want to get fair and balanced reporting, go to Fox news. The last ratings had Fox in 2nd place, CNN in 14th place and MSNBC in 27th place.

Isis Lara   September 16th, 2008 9:29 am ET

Speaking of polls, my true blue state of NY has Mcain gaining on Obama. Obama had an 18point lead in June and now, a mere five point advantage as we speak. Yikes, the last time NY voted red was during Reagan. If I was in the Obama camp I would be seriously concerned here.

McCain has voted with Bush at least 90% of the time.
Obama has voted against Bush at least 90% of the time.

McCain makes an issue out of Obama not "going against" his party. Why should Obama do that? Its the Republican party and its' policies that are misguided. Obama has had little or no reason to vote against Democratic legislation.

Go Sarah!   September 16th, 2008 9:17 am ET

New York, and absolute must win state for dems. NY polls since summer, Obama up 23 points in May. Down to 18, down to 13, down to 8, down to a dismal 5 point lead in NEW YORK STATE YESTERDAY!!!!!!!

Biden goes out and answers questions about the economy on morning news shows today. McCain goes out and answers questions about the economy on morning news shows today. Where is Obama? Oh, he brought his teleprompter back out on the stump with him and he's hiding from the press. Interesting. :)

Obama WILL win FL   September 16th, 2008 9:17 am ET

Thank you NJ voters…… Come on FL voters…..let's put Obama up by 7 here. McCain/Palin is Bush number 44….. 41 was good…..43 was the worst president in history….44 will have us in a 3rd war within 6 months.

fred   September 16th, 2008 9:16 am ET

Why talk about NJ here? Did you feel the need to talk about New Jersey for some reason? McCain leads in a bunch of states, and Obama leads in a bunch of states. Why is NJ all of the sudden in this ticker??? Why not pick another random state like Missouri where McCain has a 5 point lead, or like Iowa, where Obama is up by 10, or Pennsylvania, where Obama is up by 1, or Florida where McCain is up by 6. Why New Jersey????

Mccain is Bush   September 16th, 2008 9:16 am ET

Great, wake up America. John doesn't care about us and isn't concerned about the economy. Why should he care, he's got gazillions and doesn't know how many homes he owns.

Also, he's been in office for 26 years. The only time he's shows concern is when he running for office again. He pretends he cares, Cindy Lou runs to Africa for photo opts, and John gets re-elected.

Wake up America.

John   September 16th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Hey New Jersey! Get on board the McCain/Palin express! Don't get left behind! McCain/Palin will bring you prosperity and infuse honest government for the people. Barak will bring you false promises and higher taxes!

GEEZER & GIDGET '08   September 16th, 2008 9:09 am ET

And it will only go higher!

McCain ; “We have seen self interest, greed, irresponsibility and corruption undermine the hard work of the American people".

Finally something true out of this man's mouth.

His party is guilty of all his accusations, since Republican have held the WH and a majority of Congress, for the last 6 of the 8 years
.
We truly cannot afford 4 more years of this know nothing.

McCain: ”We will stop multi-million dollar payouts to CEOs who have broken the public trust”.

Does this mean that Carly Fiorina your new BFF, who took $21 million in cash as her departing gift after running HP into the ground, will be tendering her resignation?

Oops, hope that wasn‘t “sexist“.

politicjock   September 16th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Why does a so called "maverick" like John McCain need to embrace the tactics of distortion, of outright lies in the current political race that looks as if it has become as down and dirty as any election in recent years? Doesn't a maverick refuse to join the herd, to march to a different drummer? If John McCain has already employed the tactics of the last eight years of the Bush administration (lies and deceit as in Iraq's WMD or that Iraq was responsible for 9/11), hasn't McCain already shown that his administration (should he win the election) will simply be a continuation of the untruths and distortions that are a hallmark of George Bush and Company?

elaine   September 16th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Great, but why is CNN not highlighting this? Boy, when it's McCain who is ahead of the polls, you see it on the front page and in big, bold letters. Why, is CNN now a Republican Channel?

New Jersey, understand this:

WHILE campaigning in public for a speedy withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Sen. Barack Obama has tried in private to persuade Iraqi leaders to delay an agreement on a draw-down of the American military presence.
According to Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama made his demand for delay a key theme of his discussions with Iraqi leaders in Baghdad in July.
"He asked why we were not prepared to delay an agreement until after the US elections and the formation of a new administration in Washington," Zebari said in an interview.
Obama insisted that Congress should be involved in negotiations on the status of US troops – and that it was in the interests of both sides not to have an agreement negotiated by the Bush administration in its "state of weakness and political confusion."
"However, as an Iraqi, I prefer to have a security agreement that regulates the activities of foreign troops, rather than keeping the matter open." Zebari says.
Though Obama claims the US presence is "illegal," he suddenly remembered that Americans troops were in Iraq within the legal framework of a UN mandate. His advice was that, rather than reach an accord with the "weakened Bush administration," Iraq should seek an extension of the UN mandate.

So funny!

Clearly, N Jersey is hurting from problems in the NY financial district.

Candy West Virginia   September 16th, 2008 8:57 am ET

You go New Jersey, keep up the great work! It's funny but as backwards as my state of West Virginia is, I see quite a few Obama stickers and signs but none of mccain/palin. I know there are some serious rednecks here but not everyone here is being fooled. Hooray for West Virginia!

mccain/palin = proven pathological liars

Jerry From Dallas   September 16th, 2008 8:57 am ET

Oh please this state is going to Obama…now CNN why are you and the rest of the media not jumping all over Palin's refusal to answer and field questions? Everyone can see whats going on and you are doing nothing about it. If this were Biden he would be flamed in the media for not talking! This election as most of us can see is being setup, either intentionally or not. Palin is some kind of media darling and it's not cute anymore. She is a danger to US as americans, not only in her beliefs but her lack of knowledge. I think Matt Damon was right "this could be a bad Disney movie.
