Sen. Biden talked about the economy while campaigning in Ohio Wednesday.
Sen. Biden talked about the economy while campaigning in Ohio Wednesday.

MAUMEE, Ohio (CNN) – Joe Biden hammered John McCain on the economy at his first stop Wednesday in this battleground state, criticizing the Arizona senator for only now coming around to the idea of regulation needed to avert financial crises.

“All of a sudden it’s my goodness there’s greed on Wall Street, my goodness we need common sense regulation,” Biden said.

With polls showing Barack Obama has lost his lead in Ohio, Biden is embarking on a two-day bus tour of the state.

The Delaware senator told supporters at an outdoor rally that they have a choice between those who allow corporations and the wealthy to go "unfettered” and those who want “common sense rules” to protect transparency.

“Look, if John cares so much about this now, where was he a week ago?” Biden asked. “Where was he a month ago? Where was he 5 years ago? I’ll tell you where he was, he was bragging to the folks on Wall Street, to the executives who now he calls ‘greedy.’ He was bragging to them how we’re going to shred the regulation that fetters them, that ties them down.”

“So let’s take a look at John’s conversion here,” Biden later added, “Something happened on the road to Damascus, John fell off his horse but he got back up on the same horse.”

He went on to draw parallels with McCain’s health care plan, saying that there too McCain favors de-regulation that wouldn’t allow states to protect its residents from insurance companies.

“So John, you got back on the same horse, you continue to push a plan that’s designed to de-regulate the health insurance industry,” said Biden, asking the crowd to raise their hands if they trust insurance companies to take care of their needs.

“I got one person [who] raised their hand. I got also a bridge I got to sell you and guess what? It’s in Alaska and it goes to nowhere,” he said, echoing a line Obama has been using on the stump as well.

Does that explain where McSame is coming from?

Did he fall off his horse and hit his head, or is just the Dementia talking?

Biden seems to embellish everything he says has happened.
This supposedly honest outspoken guy doesn't seem that way to me.
I would like to know why Obama is saying he has accomplished far more in the very short time he has been in the senate, than those who have been there for some time. Doesn't seem feasable. Why isn't Biden protecting his legacy as a long-term senator? Does he feel he is exempt from the do-nothing group?

and.....stop riding McCain unfairly. He is a good man and will be at the helm come Nov.

Sen. Joseph Biden, released his tax returns for the years 1998 to 2007.
The returns showed that in, 1999, Biden and his wife Jill gave $120 to charity out of an adjusted gross income of $210,979!!!!
In 2005, out of an adjusted gross income of $321,379, the Bidens gave $380.
In nine out of the ten years for which tax returns were released, the Bidens gave less than $400 to charity.
This guy is a loud mouthed liberal hypocrite!

Tim   September 17th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

So just what have Biden and Obama been doing for the past several years (decades in Biden's case) to make sure that the democratically controlled CONGRESS exercises the appropriate oversight of industry?

Politicians are slime balls, don't get too close.

Biden–Has been dropped on his head like a dozen times–
Can't you tell –One eye always squints -
His crowds are hovering around 250 People now–LOL-
It's like an AMBER ALERT - Has anyone seen Joe-!!

It's Even in Perennial DEM States like " GUNS and RELGION " Pennsylvania and Wow Minnesota-
Together with when most of these polled people get into the Voting Booth –they will not pull the lever for OBAMA-Just like they couldn't pull the lever against Hillary-
The only reason he won the primary was because he bullied his way in the caucase states -
This is going to be a bad loss for the DEM's–

Hey COUNTRY FIRST: So you think Obama "used" Joe Biden? Well what does that say about McCain's choice of VP?
I think there are a lot of more qualified people he could have chosen if he wanted to put HIS country first!

We need all the facts!   September 17th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Please just give it to us straight Joe! McCain's economic advisor, former senator Phil Gramm was a primary author of the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act that repealed the depression-era walls between between banking, investment, and insurance that made this crisis possible. While Palin and McCain tisk tisk on government bailouts, McCain's main man on the economy authored the mess and you better believe John McBlame supported it whole-heartedly.

Sober up America. This isn't a high school prom we are voting for in November! Our empire is eroding and we can either slow the process down by supporting Obama and Biden or eat our meals off of lead plates and all go insane. When in Rome.....

Chipster   September 17th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Where was Joe Biden when all this deregulation occurred? He was in the same place as all the other discouraged Democrats – watching the Republican majority in the House and/or Senate shove through anything and everything that President Bush wanted. Republicans don't want regulations because regulations interfere with profits and golden parachutes.

Even now, the Democratic majority is too slim to defeat filibusters and vetoes. Republicans have been in control for a long time and our federal agencies have been practically dismantled. Voters need to get a clue that it isn't just about the Executive office.

I'm an independent and look at the fox news site and this site. There is so much talk about change. All I see is the same name calling and petty comments. Both parties have problems and both offer good. If you like McCain then you can like his experience but dislike some of his policies. Experience is really over rated. No one is prepared to be president. If you like Obama you know he doesn't have experience, but you might like his policies. So much more to say, but its sad how uneducated the american people seem on these blogs.

John in Ohio   September 17th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Google "1999 Gramm Deregulation Act". McCain voted yes, and he even has Gramm on his campaign staff, the same Gramm who said Americans are "whining" about the economic crisis. Biden voted no.

The choice is clear.

I've seen your post before and it is still wrong. The Democrats are up 15 or so seats in the House so they can propose legislation. The Senate is 49-49. Even if Sanders and Lieberman agree with them, President Bush vetoes it. This administration is not interested in regulation or in even holding anyone responsible for the messes we are in. How is it that it's ok to flip flop and take the Democrats message of change once you see that it's popular and what the people want. McCain talking about change and shaking up Washington is like Burger King and McDonalds putting out a commercial asking "Where's the beef". Everyone knows Obama is far more intelligent than Palin and McCain combined the only reason this is even a race is because there are too many in America who will rather have this nation fail with someone they can have a beer with as we all sit in misery for another 4 years instead of selecting the candidate with the best judgement and that inspires our yong people who are the future.

bernj   September 17th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

It is just incredible how stupid our nation has become. How can anyone with even half a brain fall for the McCain-Palin dog and pony show. In 2008 some folks are actually supporting a 72 year old man who cannot operate a personal computer. The same folks get all goo goo at a corrupt politician from Alaska who is clearly intellectually challenged at the very least.

John McCain barely got out of college. Palin went to 6 institutions before finally "obtaining" a bachelors degree. The fact is they are both not the best and not the brightest. They are not fit to lead this country. McCain and Palin are depending on the racist vote to get elected.

However, I do believe they need to put a leach on that welfare program; it's crippling our young Americans and making them lazy. Well, if Washington had listened to him in the first place we wouldn't have one. McCain voted for the 1999 Gramm Deregulation Act, Biden voted against it. If Gramm sounds familiar, he's the guy working for McCain now who said we're a nation of whiners for thinking we've got financial problems. The 1999 Gramm Deregulation Act, also known as the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, deregulated the finance industry, which led to the whole mess we have now.

The reason why our economy is crashing is because of Iraq all the money that was supposed to refuel the economy are been sent to Iraq while the economy is let alone to die. Tell it like it is Joe. You were the steady honest choice here. Palin is a flash in the pan candidate who will disappear after this election back to Alaska.

John in Ohio   September 17th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

I want to know why people claim Obama should be 20 points over McCain in the polls now, the last time a presidential candidate won an election by 20% more then his opponent was Richard Nixon. And we all saw how well that turned out. Even Reagan didn't win against Carter by a margin as wide as people say Obama should have.

John in Ohio   September 17th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

I want somebody to explain to me why McCain and his supporters are so convinced that Obama should have agreed to 10 "town hall" debates before either of them were officially nominated as the candidates of their parties. I want to know why McCain expects Obama to do something solely as a favor to McCain, something that solely benefits McCain, something that has never happened before in an American Presidential campaign. I also want to know how McCain justifies vicious lies and smears of Obama by saying that this would all have been avoided if Obama had just acquised to McCain's every demand. McCain sounds like a spoiled petulant 3-year old, crying and stamping his feet because he didn't get his way.

ET   September 17th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

However, we know how to shut him up....ask him about his sons legal issues.

Donna from Colorado Springs   September 17th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Tell it like it is Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You probably know McCain better than anyone except for his wife. The difference is that you can see his flaws and will tell the truth about his faults, where his wife won't. We democrats want you to start really speaking up against McCain and PLEASE go out on the campaign trail with Obama! Don't let McBush and Cheney in a dress be the only ones out there!

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   September 17th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

So it takes McCain a while to get things. Sometimes he gets them sooner that later. This time it is later. Had there been enough people to keep an eye on Wall Street with enough regualtory power to keep things from getting all out of hand, then things would have been all right.

It is the group of people who thing that businesses will do the proper thing who are delusional. Some will act ethically, but there are far too many who will do what every they can to get the maximum money out of the system before they get caught with doing something that is illegal or unethical. It is because of these bad eggs that we need more people watching over Wall Street with the power to do something to make sure that our interconnected markets don't make too large of a disasterous ripple.

Marie Canada   September 17th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

Surely most of the U.S. knows where John McCain and for that matter the entire GOP stand on these types of issues. Their stance has never changed and is exactly what got America to the point where it is now. More of the same will only get Americans out of a recession and into a depression.

FactCheck   September 17th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

I find it down right mind boggling to read that people on here are blaming Biden. How about blaming McCain and his financial adviser PHIL GRAMM who was responsible for much of the deregulation that got us into this mess. Back in March McCain said no way to more regulations. Now he is all about regulations and how he is going to clean up Washington. I swear some of you people deserve another 4 yrs of Republican rule.

All because Republican leadership failed to protect taxpayers from greed.

How does it effect you?…

Your credit line will be cut.

The DNC has unveiled a new clock counting the days, hours, and minutes since McCain’s last press conference (34 days) and the time between Palin was picked and her first press conference (18 days and counting). Never before have Presidential candidates been so sheltered from the press. A real preview of the ivory tower approach we would see in the White House.

I am sure as the American people continue to see the crises that are emerging on the economic front, and all the former secretaries of state essentially aggreeing to Senator Obama's position on Iran, it should be clear that we need to shelve our own prejudices and stereotypes of a "blackman" and support Barrack for president because I honestly think he is without any doubt more in touch... Don't get it twisted Republicans, the Democrats are UNITED no matter what you think. We have the facts on our side, you only have personal attacks to throw. Everythin I get into a conversation about which candidate is better, Obama wins hands down, WHY?? Because he is telling truth, he has not changed his positions on issues, he is a UNIFIER. Republicans are lieing, flip flopping their positions, contridicting themselves. FACT: McCain economic adviser, Gramm spear headed the DEREGULATION which CAUSED the SUBPRIME mortgage meltdown, which triggered the markets to crash and banks to go under. Can you trust McCain to fix it now??? This is not a talking point, this is not a lie. It is fact, people. His judgment is totally in question. He can't even vet his VP pick properly, or maybe he doesn't care to, which equals POOR JUDGMENT.

Olivia: "If McCain is geriatric, so is Biden. Matter of fact he was in the senate longer than McCain. The Obama people is blaming McCain for EVERY SINGLE THING THAT HAS GONE WRONG IN THIS COUNTRY. What about the do-nothing senate? Do they get blamed for anything?"

There's a difference between voting the right way on the issues, like Biden has, and voting the wrong way, like McCain has. It's not time in Washington that is the issue, it's what those people do with their time. McCain pushed for the mortgage industry to be deregulated. Look where we are now. He pushed for this long before we had the Senate we have now, a Senate that IS NOT Democrat controlled, but is split right down the middle. The "Democrat majority" in the Senate is Lieberman's vote, Lieberman, the guy who has endorsed McCain and who spoke at the RNC convention. Yeah, the Democrats really control the Senate. The fact is that, without a 2/3 majority in the Senate, any Senate that has a lame duck obstructionist President LIKE BUSH will not get anything done.

Go Joe! Where was McCain a month ago, you ask? Getting his economic policies spoon-fed to him by Phil "Whiners" Gramm, who rammed through legislation written by his Wall Street lobbyist pals which dropped the very regulations that would have, if not stopped this mess, at least cushioned the fall and given us a hope for a soft landing. Might have saved a few tens of thousands of jobs, too. The same Phil "Whiners" Gramm who is still an economic adviser to the McCain campaign. And don't forget the input of Carly "Fire Em All" Fiorina, who ran HP into the ground and got booted by her own board. Way to try to look like you've changed your stripes, Johnny "Keating 5" McCain!

John McShame   September 17th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

“I have voted with Bush 90% of the time because he has been right 90% of the time”

Sarah Failin says,

“I have foreign policy experience because you can see Russia from Alaska and I went to Mexico on vacation once.”

“I welcome any investigation into my past because I have nothing to hide, oh never mind I will not meet with any investigators for any reason ever.”

She believes the Bush Doctrine is a “World View” hahaha

She says she said “No Thanks” for the Bridge to nowhere when she was actually the one who got it approved

She says we may have to go to war WITH RUSSIA

It is quite obvious why Lynn Forester de Rothschild is decideing to endorse senator Mc Cain, her company totally falls under Mc Cains tax break, whereas under senator Obama's she would have to give back a little more to the poor to help balance the equation. Who needs her anyways...i surely did not know who she was, besides she seems and sounds like sour grape to me...so i say what the he*l....let her join Mc Cain's clan. She and the Mc Cain's probably go to the same elite social clubs anyways....elites...

Mc Cain is no reformer and neither is Palin! I am a woman and the more i watch and listen to Palin redundant speeches and interview, the more she comes accross as a shady hustler. When is Biden going to honorably drop out of the race for personal reasons? He's got this month to do it.

which party people choose in their personal time should be respected and the choice doesn't /shouldn't affect their professional aspects as journalists. why accuse them guilty before proven? because the rest of us don't like to hear anything we don't like? sigh, it's horrific to see this great nation we've built now filled with people who vote base on gender, race & personalities... even the rest of the world (3rd world nations included) understand how crucial this 2008 election is to our nation and the world. yet, we the U. S. citizens cave into cultural war in this election, making important decisions base on smears, bias-party views and NOT the important agendas. don't blame the world if we act like fools because it's by our own choice. seeing so many people not recognizing the importance to work with other nations, still believing we, the USA will always be #1 even though the world has proven otherwise is truly sad. sad to see our great nation drowning in such naive mentality. wake up and smell the coffee! we can, by facts, become a 2nd rated nation if we don't vote for the person who bring about authentic changes. travelling the world for work, i only hope we, the Americans can wake up and get our country back to its greatness again.

That's what we need is someone not in the parties back pocket. There's only 2 candidates who can make that claim without lying and there's running together.

America for Obama   September 17th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

Ofcourse Lynn Forester de Rothschild doesn't support Obama, it's her family that helped to create the federal reserve bank who's members earn interest on every single dollar that is printed in the United States. So everytime Bush borrows money for another War Bill, everytime we bail out another coorporation, everytime they borrow billions of dollars from the federal reserve bank this stupid, arrogant, uppity, pasty white woman get's a fat check in the mail along with everyone else in her family. She realizes just like all the other fat cats that her family faces some serious threats to their control of the money circle if Obama is elected. Heck the Clinton's are part of the institution as well, why do you think this dumb woman was backing Hillary to begin with? Not because she's a woman or a democrat or because she agrees with her on the issues, but because they are elitists doing anything they can to retain their strangle hold on the American monetary system which is a complete fraud and con. Families like the Rothschild's and Bush's have been trying to create a federal reserve banking system for decades before the finally succeeded in the 1930's. They rigged the great depression in order to create the federal reserve bank which leands money to America for interest on every dollar printed. So tell me, how can America ever get out of debt to the federal reserve bank if every single dollar we borrow has interest automatically??? This is exactly the point, if Obama is elected he will start to regulate the federal reserve bank or do away with it all together. Billionaires that are tied directly to the federal reserve bank would be threatened with the potential loss of billions more dollars. Lynn won't have it and so she must therefore endorse a liar, cheater, and thief to the White House, as long as it is someone who is in the circle of Institution of the elite of America. Obama is literally clashing with the institution of wealthy elitist whites that have run this country since it's creation and the institution will defend itself at any cost!!! Americans really need to wake up and pull the curtain away from their eyes and see this election for what it is, if Obama wins, the institution crumbles and the Rothschilds and many like them face the loss of power, control, influence, and most of all MONEY!!! If McCain wins then everything is all good for another four years. I can't believe the voters are so ignorant they can not see through this obvious con job. The republican party doesn't represent it's constituents. It represents about 100 super wealthy families who's financial pictures depend on having someone in the white house that will play their cards and their cards only. Obama is an outsider and not one to be trusted by the elite who truly run this country. It's the same reason whu both Kennedy's were killed, because they didn't support the institution's agenda (Vietnam War) just like Obama is going against their grain. They can not trust him to keep up the con if he is elected so if I was Obama I would be very concerned for my safety. These people have no morals and regard for human life, they will do anything to retain control and I worry for Mr. Obama's safety on a daily basis.

Joe John wasn't on a horse when he fell. He just said he was. Oh probably didn't fall just said he did. Did not need to get up as he was in one of his sevey houses in the Mountains of Arizona counting the money he got from Keating back when they raded the savings and loan. Yep this man is a crusader and we can all trust him to be honest and do what he says. I think it was just a day ago he admitted he lies, but it is not his fault. I mean if Obam,a would just stand beside him on stage he would,t need to lie. I know all this is true because his campaign told me on his newest invention the blackberry.

Sorry Joe   September 17th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

But you are off your "rocker". Just where have you been all this time Mr. Biden. Have you done anything lately while in the Senate? I know Obama has done squat, but you now have been around for years.

Obama will not fix this economy – he will put us deeper in the hole by taxing us to death. You just might get what you wish for people.

A top campaign adviser said Fiorina will be punished for her candid opinions:

“Carly will now disappear,” this source said. “Senator McCain was furious.” Asked to define “disappear,” this source said, adding that she would be off TV for a while – but remain at the Republican National Committee and keep her role as head of the party’s joint fundraising committee with the McCain campaign.

Fiorina was booked for several TV interviews over the next few days, including one on CNN. Those interviews have been canceled.

McCain Shifts Opposition on Government Bailout of Insurance Giant

The media is always bashing McCain.

Look on the bright side, $85B bailout on AIG. 305 million people in the U.S.

Each person paid $278.69 to save AIG.

AIG stock is selling at $2.40 a share.

Every man, woman, and child now owns 116 shares in AIG!

Talk about socialism... AIG is now The People's Insurance Company. This goes nicely with The People's Bank and The People's Mortgage Company.

When do we get our dividend checks?

I love poster Palin 2012- nothing but a naive Obamabot thinking no one can see through the ploy of pretending to be a Palin supporter and totally Anti-Hillary. Yeah right. We believe THAT.

We Hillary supporters, have been around a LONG time- we are not so easily manipulated as you Obama supporters are. We think for ourselves and act for ourselves. No one "controls" us.

We HRC supporters- will ALWAYS vote for HRC- and we will always vote on issues- not image.

Get a clue- Obama is a dictator wannabe who does not appeal to TRUE democrats.

Anyone who TELLS his or her supporters WHAT to do- on a daily basis- does NOT believe in the right to free thought, free speech and the right of the people to vote. Obama inspires his hateful army of thugs to agitate for national division and to rally to support Obama.

HRC NEVER did that. She never asked her supporters to go out there and do this or that on her behalf. She never tried to control her supporters. She never instructed people on what to say or do.

Obama is a disgrace. A egomaniacal person who wants to be supreme leader.

Obama is very much an unfair campaigner. He will say ANYTHING against his opponent. It is sickening to be taken for a fool.

Everybody puts their foot in their mouth sometime, but Joe Biden knows what he's talking about, unlike Govenor Palin. Nobody should be a heartbeat away from the presidency who just spent a week trying to learn about foreign policy with the help of Bush advisors and flashcards. Sarah Palin is an insult. When I go to the dentist, I want someone who knows something about teeth. And when I vote for president, I vote for someone who knows more than me, not someone I can go hunting with. I might not know exactly what the Bush Doctrine is, but I sure as heck expect the four candiates for the white house to know.

Biden is a great pick for Vice President and this showing exactly why. He is doing a great job on the campaign trail and actually delivering a message that should resonate with voters. I hope it sinks in and the very people who whined and complained about Obama being too much of a celebrity realize that's exactly what they're all clamoring towards in Palin. Obama and Biden will help all of America. McCain and Palin will do exactly what had already been done.

Joe Biden is a VP candidate that gives us the confidence that US will not have another disastrous VP. After Cheney as VP for the last four years, Obama showed he cares about Americans in selecting a VP in Joe Biden.

A bad VP choice can lead the country in the wrong direction. Cheney reminds us of that.

I can't believe there isn't more said about McCain's support of deregulation of health insurance and privatizing Medicare as Biden touched on here. This is a pet project for repubs and, as a health care administrator for 16 years, I know for a fact that health insurers need regulating more than anyone...at least as much as Wall Street. Why has no one mentioned that McCain was the ONLY senator who didn't vote...didn't even show up...for the July Medicare vote that the NY Times called "crucial?" For God's sake...even Ted Kennedy showed up! On this close vote where one senator could make the difference either way, McCain chose to sit it out because it would have cost him support no matter which way he voted. Is this what we want in a President? Flip Flop Flip Flop

Sorry about being away so long folks, it's kinda of crazy here in Houston. Thanks for all of your prayers. Now to my comment: Joe is dead on and some people just can't handle the blunt truth. If Joe still has it in him to run in 2016, I will be voting for him, for sure.

Don't blame Biden and the Dems for this one. It's all on the policies of 2001-2007.

Bill,
This goes 15 years back, so Obama have not really been a big part of the problem.
And with a republican lead congress for a long time(until 2006) it is a little hard to get things true, even if we did not have bush on top..
And McCain did not even think anything was wrong with the economy, until wall street crumbled..

Sick of it all   September 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Nothing but a lot of bitterness, nothing but a bunch of hatred from the Obamabots. I was on the fence about who to vote for but the Democrats have shown: they got nothin'. And they are Hypocrites. Sorry, I just can't vote for your guy because of the general mean-spiritedness of Democrats. So we will be stuck with McCain. And by the way, the emptyness of Obama is now plain for all but the blinded-by-bias to see. He is all about making promises that he has no plan to actually back up. You all can dish it out but you can't take it. You say anything and everything about McCain and Palin, but you respond to counter-attacks on Obama and Biden like a 3-year old having a fit.

GL, Bend, OR   September 17th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Way to go JOE!

We live in a small world. I get that we need global economic interactions ... but for crying out loud, we've sold our Country!

Too much is outsourced, too many good people have had their jobs sent to other countries. The returning profit was to so FEW greedy folks that it was not enough to keep the economic ball rolling. Do they have no concience about what they have done?! If they did they would not give, and/or take, the huge pensions and just walk away.

It appears that we no longer have control over anything; financial, jobs, and consumer goods, as long as the money pours in to the right people, it's all been good .... NOT!!!

China sends us toys coated with date-rape drugs ... where is the response, let alone the OUTRAGE?! Toys with lead are still pouring in to the USA from China. WHY?

Too little is now MADE IN THE USA.

We need CHANGE. I vote for the ticket with a plan, and the intelligence to put together the team needed to begin the corrections we need ....

Jolly Old, you are clueless! It is your conservative party that deregulated and managed to reverse legislation that stemmed from the depression days, which would have prevented some of these problems. McCain's financial advisor Graham was responsible for pushing through a deregulation bill that has been catastrophic. This is not the fault of liberals, it is the fault of the present administration.
They ignored the lessons of the past and forgot that greed is inherent in the system and. Some government safeguards must be in place or this is what happens. But then again, when government is in bed with the people who will benefit, what do you expect. Get your facts straight please.

Maybe they'll start another war. The Bomb Bomb Iran joke probably went over quite well with McCain's Neo-Con bosses – I'm sure the Neo-Cons are even more thrilled about having a new poodle (Palin) – one that's even more clueless and malleable than Bush #43.

lol Typical liberal, screaming and red-faced about issues he doesn't even understand. The democrats have no idea where they stand on any issues, their entire campaign is based on making everyone believe that McCain is Bush and that McCain is to blame for every problem in the world. I've never seen a more ridiculous campaign & they don't understand that it's not helping them, it's making the independent / uncertain voters swing to McCains side (seen the polls lately where the democrats are falling further & further behind?). Since this campaign started I've said that obama is his own worst enemy & will lose the election just by being himself. Now Biden may be obamas own worst enemy.

Obama and Biden have no right to slam John McCain on the economy when after yesterdays huge market disappointment, he partied with celebrities, charging $31,000 a head...well $28,500 + 2,500 for the Streisand concert...now let me think....what is his biggest concern...the economy or just making more money for his campaign.

People are starving, the food banks are empty in Houston. I can't get a grant for my daughter to go to school because I make $54,000 per year....that is ridiculous.... and he has the nerve to charge that kind of money for a few hours, pictures and a concert....I'm so over this entire campaign......do any of the candidates really deserve our vote....scary.....

judy, Wisconsin   September 17th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

This deregulation mess was caused by the Repugs deregulating everything (i.e. "big government". ) Regulations that were put in place after the Great Depression. Partly authorized by Graham one of McCains "friends." Now we are paying for their stupid policies and Americans should see the difference between Repugs and Democrats. But this is the same electorate that put C- student Bush in for 8 years.

You know if the repugs would have been able to push that legislation to privatize social security just think of the devastation that would take place for millions of senior citizens today. Mcwar stood by bush when he proposed it.

this is why Bush/McCain wanted to privatize social security.... that money could have bought them more time before everything crumbled... so when Bush started preaching about privatizing, that's when they knew the deck of cards was going to fall...

Corporations have two things they need to look out for to stay afloat: themselves, and their shareholders. That's all they need to care about, and that's all most do. There are some that will pay attention to environmental concerns, or the concerns of the customers, but for the most part these go ignored. The government needs to be there to keep them in check. If a corporation could, they would find a way to channel money directly from the consumer into a bank account, but government regulation attempts to limit that, and for the most part, where competition AND regulation exists, a better environment for the consumer exist.

How ironic.

He is RIGHT. People, listen up. Say what you will about petty character differences between Obama and McCain.

Again, WHAT HAS BIDEN BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 29 + YEARS IN THE SENATE?CONGRESS? Present? whoooa .... Remember – it's about EXPERIENCE, NOT A PARTY. Sersiously. The way McCain goes on and on about wallstreet you'd think that he doesn't have any lobbyists from wall street on his campaign staff or that he and his wife haven't benefitted profusely from the lack of regulation and wall-street-gone-wild financial decadence of the last 8 years. I"m sure his money is safe, so he can say whatever he wants and hope that no one will actually think about how ridiculous and hypocritical his phony outrage is. As if he hasn't been in congress all this time? as if he's not a member of the party that's at fault for the economic mess? He may have been a "maverick" (before this presidential campaign that is) about some issues – the war, torture, immigration....But he has not in any way shape or form been a maverick against the consolidation of power on wallstreet and the sorry implications that has had on our economy.

Unlike Obama who was all for the bailout to spend some more of the taxpayers money to help the rich and do nothing for the poor old boy who is losing his home. If the Government is going to pay our tax dollars to big financial bankers then something should be done with the bankers in insuring that they do everything possible to help keep these homeowners from losing their homes. They could help by lowering their payments or some other way of fixing their loans were it is feasible for them to pay. After all it is our money they're playing with. In Sen Biden, we have someone who has long worked with Sen McCain, and who knows the stands McCain has taken over these many decades.

It is nice to have a reasonably-worded push-back against McCain's flip flopping here, isn't it. CNN's own FACT CHECK concedes that McCain's position is shifting, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but he still says "Wish I didn't have to do it." He's trying to have it both ways, a very immature and transparent stand for someone so high in politics. I'm sure that's all he has energy for.

Remeber what he said twice (also stated by his surrogates), that the tone of his campaign is so negative because Sen Obama refused to agree to townhall meetings.

This is really "either you play by my rules or esle..." in my book, and I am afraid to even think what's going to happen if Iran, Russia or China don't play by his rules.

Common sense regulation? I've never once heard "common sense" and "regulation" in the same sentence, except coming from the mouths of avowed socialists, who just wish-wish-wish we would lose our minds and establish socialism here in America.

Regulations and government meddling is the entire cause of our current problem. Fanny and Freddy and the FED, engaged in a wonderful social experiment in liberal "generosity" with other people's money, took it upon themselves to see that money was sooooo cheap so that every Harry Hard-luck and Sally Sob-story could purchase a home they could not otherwise own nor pay for. THAT'S what's created the mess we're in.

Message to government social experimenters... STOP using this nation's finances to create your liberal utopia.

Capitalism IS NOT the problem. Government do-gooders and liberalism IS the problem. Get the government out of the way (STOP rescuing failing businesses) and let the market right itself.

This analogy–is anal.
We need a President on will reform aspects of our government and institutions that clearly are not helpful to Americans at this time.

But re-engineering government and crashing the best healthcare operation in the world with Obama and Biden in the lead and a wacko congress with Palosi (a honorary member and supporter of the Democratic Socialist Party of America) into their own wierdly socialist version of a almost capitalist nanny state–is absurd.

John could fall of the horse. He could roll into office in a wheelchair. Mr. McCain is still more honest and focused on objective management and realistic direction of the office of President–than Obama.

Way to go out on a limb McCain. Protect you deregulating record, your lobbyist buddies, and attack a generic vice instead.

Pathetic, McCain, just plain pathetic.

I love Joe Biden, he calls a spade a spade. Everyone should go to MSNBC and read the article "A McCain lawyer scrambles to block a Palin ethics inquiry." They are trying desperately to delay this investigation until after the election because they know she is guilty despite Palin saying she will fully cooperate with it on national television with Charles Gibson. I honestly can't believe people are considering voting for this scandal ridden, horribly inexperienced pathological liar who will give us more of the same. She is Cheyney with lipstick.

If the liar, pandering McBush was even half as honest as Biden. I might consider him as a real candidate. But McOil has proven time and time again that he is a liar and a cheat.

Joe "HAIR PLUGS" Biden shouldn't talk about things falling off. Especially since he can't even be honest about being bald.

Jerry   September 17th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

McShameless simply can't get away with saying he's now the champion of market regulation.

It's like saying George W Bush is a uniter and not a divider.

To Republcans trying to get elected, up is down and black is white.

How come the Best (worst) Political Team on Television are ALL REGISTERED DEMOCRATS? Why were ALL CNN Pundits covering the Republican Convention REGISTERED DEMOCRATS???????

BTW, Biden who? is he the guy who yelled all morning yesterday and said he doesn't know of any economist that thinks raising taxes on small business and capital gains would be BAD for the economy now????
Why are dems and liberals always so darn angry?
