Palin staff won't testify in trooper probe, AG says

Gov. Palin greeted supporters in Ohio Tuesday.
Gov. Palin greeted supporters in Ohio Tuesday.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) – Aides to Gov. Sarah Palin won't comply with subpoenas issued by state lawmakers investigating the firing of Alaska's former public safety commissioner, since Palin "has declined to participate" in the probe, her attorney general says.

"As state employees, our clients have taken an oath to uphold the Alaska Constitution, and for that reason, they respect the legislature's desire to carry out an investigation in support of its law-making powers," Attorney General Talis Colberg, a Palin appointee, told the investigation's manager in a letter released Wednesday. "However, our clients are also loyal employees subject to the supervision of the governor."

Palin once pledged to cooperate with the state Legislature's investigation into the July firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. After his dismissal, Monegan accused Palin of trying to pressure him into firing her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper who had been involved in an
acrimonious divorce from the governor's sister.

Palin has denied any wrongdoing, and her advisers said this week that Monegan was fired for insubordination after he continued to press for funding for projects the governor opposed.

Her allies argue the investigation has become a "partisan circus" since she became Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain's running mate, and they argue that any investigation should be handled by the state Personnel Board.

"Moreover, two lawsuits have been filed challenging the legitimacy of the investigation," Colberg wrote. "On behalf of our clients, we respectfully ask that you withdraw the subpoenas directed to our clients and thereby relieve them from the circumstance of having to choose where their loyalties lie."

It was unclear whether the letter covered Palin's husband, Todd, who was among those subpoenaed by the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. Colberg's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The letter was sent to Sen. Hollis French, the Democratic chairman of the state Senate Judiciary Committee, which approved the subpoenas last week. Palin's allies have blasted French over comments he made to ABC News in early September, warning that the investigation into Monegan's firing could yield an "October surprise" for the GOP ticket in the form of criminal charges.

Oh well...guess the MEDIA needs to uncover what she is trying to hide..at least they can hide behind the FIRST AMENDMENT and not worry about being scared into keeping quiet by the GOP machine....

And if no one sees a problem with this and votes for her and McCain, then we are REALLY a dumb nation.....

Just another extreme right wing evangelical hiding behind her religion. So many of the "born again" EVANGELICAL Christians are just losers or crooks who think as long as they pray every few hours they can do anything they want because they've been "saved". She's a big hypocrite. Makes me want to gag!

I could not get away with refusing a request to do jury duty, I'M sure I would wind up in jail if I refused a supeona. How does Palin and her staff get away with refusing a supoena. Oh, I forgot she is following Bush and his crooked bunch. Republican= NO VOTE

Does this look familiar to anyone?

    MORE GOP BS!
    MORE investigations
    MORE LACK of cooperation
    MORE corruption

America needs to GET A CLUE, and jump from the sinking GOP ship, because only the elite have life vests, and the folks in 'steerage' (90% of the American people) are left to go down with the Titanic.

    Vote for real change: OBAMA/BIDEN!!

I don't believe those polls, I think they're polling senior citizens who are home all day. No one has ever called me, and they're not using cell phones. Americans just can't be that stupid to vote for McCain.

Romney and Huckabeast will be elated because they know John is a sickly man, and his VP...well. I won't go there. So these guys see themselves running in 2012.

Sarah will be home, raising her baby and life will go on.

  10. No to Palin

And if she fired him because of his attitude/insubordination, why did she say that she offer him a job with the Alcoholic Beverage Control?

Either she has judgement issues or she misused power.

And people really believe that a McCain/Palin administration would be different that a Bush/Cheney?

Both lie to the American people and think they're above the law, don't they? Both seem to have chosen staffs who will lie to the American people and who think they are above the law.

Oh, if only McCain would have vetted her........

"As state employees, our clients have taken an oath to uphold the Alaska Constitution..." Period, end of sentence. I can't believe that Palin's AG is arguing that anything trumps this one fact. You uphold the Constitution or you don't, no ifs, ands or buts. Every one of the subpoenaed witnesses that fails to cooperate with the investigation deserves exactly what they get, whether it's a contempt citation, firing or impeachment.

Palin's supposed values are starting to sound pretty hollow. If this is what she means by "reform" - trading one group of crooks for another - thanks, I think I'll vote for Obama. At least he's not a proven liar.

If she is innocent why is the Republican Party blocking the investigation? Why she refuses to cooperate? Looks like she has something to hide! American people deserve the truth!

So typical of Palin & her staff. If you haven't yet, check out the article in the NY Times, "Once Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes."
This woman and her staff and campaigners surround themselves in a cloak of secrecy and they truly think they are above the law. How dare Palin call herself an American! What she has done in the state of Alaska is a disgrace to our entire nation.

..... Wow....... She promises to cooperate, but then withdraws. Sounds fishy to me. Why hide it if you have nothing to hide (to parrot most commenters)? More of the same Bush/Cheney avoidance of justice. Hey, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE! Nobody is above the freakin law. I know that the hyper-republican commenters will try to put a positive spin on this, so good luck if you are in that category. And I also know that the republican-controlled media will try to stop this from being spread. Lies and cover-ups.

    Obama/Biden=changed America.

    McCain/Palin=screwed America.

I guess most of you posting only read the headline or the first paragragh and then make up the rest of the story. It is quite clear that the reason Sarah Palin will not testify is because one of Obama's cronies tainted the investigation and will try to render a pre-determined verdict in October which of course would be favorable to Obama. You rookies obviously know next to nothing about politics.

Here we go again. Another VP hiding behing priviledge. Have we not had enough of Cheney dodging issues now we have Palin. This is not a good start. And if you don't think she had anything to do with the firings give me a break!!!

How anyone in his right mind could vote for McCain with this unethical nutcase only a heartbeat away from the leader of the most powerful country on the planet is beyond me. It makes me sad that so many of my fellow countrymen are total political illiterates. They've all just jumped on the bandwagon for absolutely no good reason.

Of course she wont do the right thing and let them do their investigation. Just like Bush pardoned Scooter Libby.
They are all the same. They are the Republican Party. Above the law.
Not for the good of the people. I just dont get why people want to give them 4 more years? It makes me see how a place like Germany could have been brainwashed by Hitler. IS America brainwashed by the Republican agenda? They are crooks. Throw the bums out and vote Obama!
I bet even Cheney knows how bad a shape we are in and I bet he pulls that lever for Obama. Cheney probably even knows it..lol..
