Sen. Biden is sticking by his recent comments on taxes.
Sen. Biden is sticking by his recent comments on taxes.

AKRON, Ohio (CNN) – Hours after drawing Republican fire over a comment that those making more $250,000 per year will be expected to pay higher taxes because “it’s time to be patriotic,” Joe Biden told supporters in a small union hall Thursday afternoon that the wealthy are patriotic but “we have not asked anything of them.”

Earlier, John McCain and Sarah Palin seized on the original remark from Barack Obama’s running mate. “To the rest of America that's not patriotism,” said Palin at an Iowa rally. “Raising taxes is about killing jobs and hurting small businesses and making things worse." McCain called the comment “just plain dumb.”

Biden said both Obama and McCain are in favor of tax cuts - but the decision over who gets them is a question of values.

“Is it a higher value that [those making more than $250,000] get that tax cut?” Biden asked. “Or should we take that $130 billion and give it to families making less than $150,000 all the way down the ladder? What do you value? Tell me what you value.”

“The point I want to make to you,” Biden added, “is wealthy people are just as patriotic as poor people. We just have not asked anything of them.”

After repeating “it’s a time to be patriotic,” Biden argued that the county has “no problem sending our kids to war” and hit McCain for not supporting the recent GI Bill.

“I tell you Democrats,” Biden said angrily, “don't you step down from anybody telling you that we don't value, we don't have American values. I have had it up to here. I have had enough. Tell me what you value!”

Biden also jabbed McCain and Palin for not holding press conferences. The Republican nominee hasn’t had one in over a month, and Palin hasn’t since being named to the GOP ticket. Biden said he was asked by a reporter what he thought of Palin but replied he didn’t know because she doesn’t talk to the press.

“I don’t have any idea. I don’t know!” exclaimed Biden. “It’s not just Sarah Palin. When’s the last time John had a press conference?”

Looking over at Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, he added, “Ted, you and I know, when elected officials stop holding press conferences, it ain’t because he’s found a new way to communicate, it’s because he doesn’t want to communicate.”

McCain spokesman Ben Porritt responded that in the midst of a troubled economy and a presidential election, “Why on earth does Barack Obama’s running mate worry so much about our media relations strategy?”

Biden is another joke. They have no issued. Just attack McCain and Palin. Barack is doing the same thing and CNN has the media to publish it. God save this country from these evils.

Typical of McShame and Sarah "Where the Heck Am I" to try and again turn a statement around. It's okay for the both of you to do it, but boy if Obama does it, there's sexism and non patriotism involved. Hey Johnny and Ms. Clueless get a life and start addressing real isues.

Hey Nickle & Dime you probably also believe McShame invented the Blackberry. What next ? McShame invented the wheel???

Republican Mama for Obama   September 18th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Palin is a puppet, pa.joe. McCain rushed in to save her when someone asked for 'specific foreign policy experience' during their town hall meeting last night. I imagine she is feverishly cramming for her debate with Joe Biden in a few weeks...

JulesT   September 18th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Biden is saying what McCain has said from the begining on this nice "tax cut" for the wealthy, that it is unfair. Somewhere down the line though, McCain lost touch with average american and "traded up"; he changed his mind and decided that yes, the wealthy do deserve the tax break the Bush has implemented, and hey lets make it permanent.

So the next time McCain pretends he is like the rest of us, someone should ask him how does it feel to live paycheck by paycheck, not because of poor planning on our part, but because our economy has "tanked". And then have him explain again why he feels the wealthy deserve a permanent tax break.

Obama and Biden are more like the average american than McCain or Palin. For either McCain or Palin say otherwise is a bunch of crock.

Walt, Belton,TX   September 18th, 2008 7:56 pm ET

Check and see how much taxes wealthy people pay, Joe. Now add them up slowly so you can comprehend the fact that they pay the vast majority of your worthless salary!

The rich hold the power in this country and with that great power comes great responsability. If the republicans truely cared about "County First" then they would do everything in there power to get us out of this rut, including paying more taxes.

Debbie Joyner   September 18th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

Matt – hmm – it wasn't my statistic but I can tell you that you don't pay that 15% on your first dollar of income – so 30,000 a year at 15% bracket DOESN"T equal $4,500 – you have to take all your deductions – to get to adjusted gross income – then the brackets start at 10% but don't let the facts get in your way.

Sean – The 1% statistic is from the IRS – I'm sure they're lying about it and includes everyone who makes more than $388,000 and Mr. Brainiac you do pay income taxes on interest and dividends, they don't get to just sit in the bank. Payroll taxes are different – should I add the chart which % of people receive vastly more from social security compared to what they put into it and which don't.

Jenny in CA   September 18th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

I'm so sick of people talking about Socialism. What the Republicans have done thru de-regulation was privatize big earnings, but socialize losses since we the taxpayers will be paying for it in the long run.

I'll take Obama and Biden anyday.

I wish Palin and McCain would go away already, whenever I hear their voices it's like nails on a chalkboard.

Matt   September 18th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Hey Larry, prices may indeed go up in response ot more taxes, but consumers (i.e., demand) exercising choice not to buy those products will bring it back down. CEO's will just have to accept that their excessive compensation packages might have to become a little less excessive. This keeps the power of choice in the consumers' hands.

The real problem you don't want to admit is that there is ZERO evidence from the past century that your Randian trickle-down Reagonmics actually works. The FACT is, your precious tax cuts for corporate America will just go right into corporate America's pockets, will NOT create jobs and will NOT spur pay raises. Greed rules these people and we're seeing the effects thereof RIGHT NOW.

So ... let's review: 8 years of tax cuts because it is better for the economy have given us:
- The highest national debt ever ($9.5 trillion)
- The highest budget deficit ever
- 46 million Americans w/o health insurance and a healthcare system that is falling apart
- Thousands of lost jobs
- Millions of foreclosures
- Imploding retirement savings
- Underfunded social security
- Unaffordable heating bills
- Companies going bankrupt left and right

Whoever believes we can get ourselves out of this hole without paying for it, either is not paying attention or is lying.

I don't mind paying higher taxes if it means that this nation will once again be loved by the world, and that I can travel around the globe and enjoy my vacations in countries where I don't need to worry about being hated simply because I'm an American. I love this country. I make $450,000 a year, and I will vote for OBAMA/BIDEN. We don't need to support the top 2% in this country, because they have proven that they don't have any trouble with making big bucks, don't worry, they will NEVER worry about health care or where their next meal is coming from.

My Grandma tells me frequently about WWII and how much people gave up for the good of the country. Joe's right, it is patriotic to pay taxes. It's also patriotic for people to use less gas, preserve natural resources and spend less on goods made in foreign countries even if it means you don't go to Old Navy every weekend.

It's time for all of us to give a little more.

Please shut up, Joe   September 18th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Biden, this might actually be the dumbest thing I have ever heard a politician say.

Engle and Marx are laughing all the way to wealth redistribution nirvana.

Remember the Boston tea Party   September 18th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Joe Biden should remember how this nation was started - I believe it had something to do about taxation without representation and I remember something about Boston Tea Party. When 40% of Americans today pay no taxes, and another 10,000,000 illegal aliens do not pay any taxes, Joe and the democratic party need to wake up. Obama cannot tax his way into the White House - Go through with his tax plan and forget about recession – this country will sink into a Depression

OMG!   September 18th, 2008 7:45 pm ET

I'D RATHER YOU BE HONEST ABOUT THE TAXES THAN FOR MCCAIN TO MAKE PROMISES THAT HE WONT KEEP. SOMETHING GIVES TO GET CHANGE.

Jim   September 18th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Nobody has liked income and capital gain taxes for the past century, but we must owe up to two facts: 1) we have a misguided $1 trillion Iraq war not paid for by taxes; 2) we have the largest deficit in history under Bush's administration.

I am a middle income professional. I've struggled all my life to provide for my family, own my home, have a retirement. I have few tax breaks beyond my mortgage intertest. MJy father fought in World War II. I'm patriotic and willing to pay my fair share of taxes, if we Americans together can help America get out of this Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin mess!

Giselle, Atlanta   September 18th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Taxes go up, prices go up? More GREED at the top!!!

If HP could afford a $42 million dollar golden parachute package for one mere executive, they could afford to pay a bit more in taxes without raising the price of their products.

Failure to value the workers and the consumers of your products.

Definitely NOT Country First.

Tom   September 18th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Finally, something Democrats, Republicans, Independents and even racists on all sides can agree on – Biden is a total, undeniable idiot.

well since 1/4 of your taxes go into defense spending while the other 1/4 goes into Social Security that pays for retired americans, yea, taxes are patriotic.

Joe, I know that you like to speak your mind which I believe is a honorable thing to do. These republicans will distort the facts every chance that they get. We just cannot afford to give them the weapons that they need to do so. I for one cannot take four more years of these losers. We need change and I dont think that JM and SP are candidates of change. They are more of the same. It's that simple.

I agree with him. My husband and I are in the $250,000 above income range, and we are both voting for he and Obama. At least our tax dollars won't be going to war and other failed Republican policies. The thought that we may be helping some of the bigots and idiots in this country is disturbing, however, after reading some of these posts. But we say, truthfully, unlike McCain, "Country First." Prosperity, rebulid international allegiances, focus on alternative energy and energy conservation and dependence. I am willing to shell out a few bucks for that. Obama/Biden.

We know the GOP doesn't like the liberal media, is no secret. But when you accussed the other of being secretive and it makes it look like they are hiding something, you know for a fact people wanna have questions. That's interesting...

Larry   September 18th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

Joe Biden is a buffoon. He know's full well that the marginal tax rate on those making over $357k is TWICE that of those making $32k.

So what's "fair share"? 3x? 4x? For chrissakes people, this is nothing more than government sponsored redistribution of wealth. I don't make $357k, but I'm also not going to steal from those who do.

Cindy   September 18th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

I wonder if Halliburton and Cheney will give back any of the billions they're making off the war and our taxes, or will they continue to break America's back in the name of patriotism?

Olivia   September 18th, 2008 7:38 pm ET

It's amazing how the thought of getting free money, earned by someone else, can motivate some people and bring out accusations towards those that actually did the hard time.

What makes me sad is the way Biden comes off as being sanctimonious and totally blameless for any decisions over his 30 years + stint in congress. Doesn't even mention his son giving up certain activities to make him look better.

So, who's perfect? Biden?

I saw Biden's interview this morning and thought this comment was great. Patriotism is more than wearing a pin and raising the flag. It is about raising to people to the level that they can reach their full potential and serve their country in the best way that they can, whether that be in the military, teaching, nursing, etc.

I like this guy!

Trysh, Los Angeles   September 18th, 2008 7:36 pm ET

I once had a boss who is a millionaire and then some. Once after complaining about all the taxes taken out of MY check, he said to me that paying taxes was like tipping for the great service we receive in this country. Yet, he votes Republican because he doesn't feel that HE should have to pay too much out of HIS money.

I thought it was funny that he felt that I should be happy to tip when his being a millioniare and then some meant that HE was getting the great service, but I was usually treated like I ordered a side salad and tap water.

Patty, if we responsibly end this war, instead of wasting billions of dollars each month, we would have enough money to rebuild crumbling America. McSame doesn't want to end the war anytime soon, while Obama wants to bring our troops home. Obama's tax plan should make the rich pay more taxes. it is only fair. Become more 'aware' of the situation!

Democrat from AZ   September 18th, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Yes, Debbie Joyner, you are correct when you say that rich Americans pay more then regular people in taxes. You are complaining about wanting to help some of your less fortunate AMERICANS by paying a little more in tax, but yet you don't mind McCain continuing to spend all of our tax dollars -$10 billion a month to be exact-for a war that NONE of us Americans want. So, just because Senator Obama wants to raise your tax, you want to continue paying out all that money for the war?? Why do the rich Americans act like royalty and us the serfs??

'we' havent asked anything of the wealthy says biden?

lets see. the top earning 1% of this country pays 39.89% of the individual income tax collected in the united states (2006) figures. And thats after the tax cuts for the wealthy that so many democrats criticized.

if asking 1% of the country to pay almost half the total individual income tax burden isn't asking 'anything' of the wealthy – what the heck is?

if paying higher taxes is patriotic, why not ask the bottom 50% to pony up a little more? after all the bottom half of tax payers contribute a measly 2.99% of the individual income taxes collected.

anyone who claims the wealthy dont pay their 'fair share' should have their income tax bracket raised to the 35% level and see how they like it, or better yet the 39.6% level reflecting the days before dubya's tax cut to top earners.

Debbie Joyner – I'm sorry but your "facts" are wrong. The top 1% don't pay income taxes, why? Because they make their money off of interest and dividends. Their 100 million dollars sits in the bank, earning far higher interest rates than you or I, and they live off that, no payroll taxes you see.

Wisdom – you're wrong. I only make 36,000 a year and already I've paid more than $4,000 in taxes. Don't get your "facts" from Sesame Street.

Peter of Oregon   September 18th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Biden has a point. Even the benefit Barack Obama wants to give young people, getting $4,000 in government aide toward college if they complete community or military service is something the rich have no need of. America hasn't been asking the very rich to make any sacrifices. Their paying more taxes to help bring America out of this recession is a necessary one, a patriotic one.

Jack 64 year old   September 18th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

The wealthy could care less about the majority of Americans unless of course you need privates to fight to maintain your world oil supply.

The wealthy do feel that they deserve their status after all most of them have had a silver spoon since birth and a free ride to the best Ivy league schools. Yes and that education slots them into the executive ranks with bloated salary's. Is their education any better then those graduating from state collages? NO but, the pedigree comes with it's special benefits.

So are the very wealthy patriotic and they are willing to serve as officers that tell the rest of us how to fight while they wait back at headquarters. In the case of Vietnam those glory officers sent men into the rice paddies to be ambushed as they flew over in their command helicopters so they could get their combat badges and the next promotion. Patriotic – well I guess you have to define it better for me because I don't see many rich patriots!

FDR said it best that taxation should be based on what people can afford to pay.

It's a joke that McBush thinks it's okay to double-down on the Bush tax cuts for only the rich.

Also very few people are cognizant of special tax loopholes that allow some millionaires to zero-out and not pay ANY tax. How is that fair???

RJS413   September 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Anyone who thinks more government is what will solve the financial challenges should take a look at Europe and how stagnent they've become. After working non-stop for 25 years to obtain a decent financial situation, I'm now expected to give my hard earned money away to those who choose easier paths.

Matt   September 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Debbie Joyner: If you make 30,000 a year you pay 15%. Your math is way off. You would not pay $700. You would pay $4500. So you would be making $25,500. There are a lot more people in that bracket then the 1 million up bracket. That $4500 means more to the 30K earner than the 250K does to the 1 million earner.

I'm sorry, but I don't feel sorry for the "poor sap" who only brings in 750K after taxes. Give me a break.

Wes   September 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

I wholeheartedly agree with you Joe. I'm even more impressed since it means you will pay more too, but then looking at your tax returns it doesn't look like you try to use lots of loopholes or shelters to hide from paying taxes. Some republicans slammed you for the amount given to charity, but neglected to note what percent of income you paid in taxes.

God's speed Joe Biden!

Obama-Biden in 2008!

Palin-McCain NEVER!

Tamarra   September 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

The whole argument is stupid. No ones taxes is going up with Obama. What will happen is that the rich will pay the taxes they are supposed to pay and corporations who shipped jobs overseas have to pay for that lose of income for putting people out of a job. Sounds good to me.

Patty   September 18th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

I listened to Obama today and he had so many spending programs
but he just doesn't understand this country is broke. I just wish he would wake up. I know two couples that have small businesses that this tax increase would hit. They are not wealthy people but they do employ 5 /8 people. They are either going to have to lay off a person or raise the price of their product to cover this tax burden. Bad idea in this economy . Senator Obama is out their getting everyone very excited about a tax cut but his $1000.00 won't mean much to the people who might loose thei job or the higher prices all of us will be hit with. Who gets it and who doesn't get it

I think you mean the person making $30,000 pays about $7,000 not $700. and the person making a million probably has so many write-off's (unlike the lower income person he probably owns his own home) his $250,000 gets greatly reduced.

John McCain, Lady Rothchild & others like them will still have more than one home, private planes to jet from continent to continent and a clothing budget that could save a third world country. Most of their millions were made on the backs of their workers. Why should their maids, gardners, nannies pay more taxes than these idle rich? HEy Debbie Joyner;
U must think the world is dumb. You forced me to do some quick research and realize that JFK was correct. It was imperative to lower the tax burden on the individual taxpayer from the top rate of 90% as it was under Republican Eisenhower. JFK Lowered it to 70%. JFK also proposed for corporate taxes to be reduced from 52% to 48%..

Don't twist JFK quotes to try to gain support for McCain's rubbish and bounce.
Republicans are like a bacteria. The ideal condition necessary for Exponential republican growth is .. Public ignorance

Do people realize that those making over $250,000 a year already pay the vast majority of taxes in our country. Those making over $250,000 a year create most of the jobs that the rest of us work? Yeah let's tax the business owners into oblivion so they take their jobs overseas and let us all become jobless. We can find balance. Let's keep taxes where they are at, and start eliminating government programs and balance the budget. Once the government gets bigger by even a small percentage it will never go back down; no matter what party is in power.

Listen up Debbie – We in the 51-99% bracket are almost half of wage earners and we bear the brunt of it. Income taxes aren't the only taxes we pay. What percentage of the top 1% income goes toward taxes in general? What percentage does the top 1% have left after taxes and basic necessities? It's not socialism, it is fairness.

Biden finally said what was needed to be heard. Yes , people including Kate Snow the reporter, needs to step up to the plate and pay a little something extra than you have been in taxes because you make over $250,000. People whats wrong with that. Nothing. Biden was also honest when he said that voters weren't sure that obama or any of the candidates can deliver on change. It will take all of us to work and sacrifice to get us out of these messes, that the guy everyone wanted to have a beer gt us into. Yes we have to blame Bush because the buck stops with him God better bless us because we have some deep and serious problems – AND WE BETTER START FACING THEM STOP THE LIES OR WE'LL DESERVE WHAT WE GET

Andy   September 18th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

As someone who makes more the $250,000, I'm willing to pay more taxes than someone who makes significantly less.

I would rather that money weren't spent on a stupid, endless, expensive war in Iraq, or spent bailing out the financial industry, or paying of the enormous deficit Bush has racked up, but those are cards this country has dealt itself.

Paying my fair share of taxes to get this country back on its feet is far more patriotic, in my opinion, than wearing a flag pin.

case   September 18th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Bush: cut taxes for the wealthy and started a war..at the same time. Never done before in history. How many people on this post make more that 250,000 per year? Well it's less than 5% of the country so not many. McCain hasn't forgotten who his true constituency is, that 5%.

I don't know how many fact checks and financial experts have to verify that the Obama tax plan cuts taxes for over 85% of Americans. Specifically those making less than $250k before the mcCain supporters get it.

Of course there is McCain's plan, written by Gramm, architect of deregulation that toppled the banks this year. The same plan Greenspan (a republican) says America can't afford.

It is not only patriotic, but it's only fair. Small and large salaries alike must put into our tax base proportianately the same. For every dollar I earn, I should pay no more and no less then every dollar you earn. Or vice versa.

It is their american DUTY to pay as much per dollar as I do. They are fortunate enough to live in a country that gives them the opportunity to make that much, they must match it cents on the dollar that I do.

If not, then they are actually endorsing a social system in which the government takes care of the wealthy and big business.

True patriots give of themselves to better the whole of our nation.

Some people give service. Some give money.
Seems like everyone is being asked by Obama to give of themselves... and yes, sometimes that means you must give a little more than others.

Right now, our nation is in serious need of infrastructure investments (including the facilitation of new energy sources that are readily available) and that costs money. Perhaps those who have been made wealthy while our nation has begun to suffocate under a mounting debt ought to now pay back a little of what this administration gave to them.

If you make 30,000 dollars you pay about 700 dollars…"

You pay a hell of a lot more than $250k if you earn a million a year.

George   September 18th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Yes, it's the rich folks' patriotic duty? That's what Lenin said.

Listen , folks. As much as I want to beliee the Obama camp, it's all rhetoric. the numbers of new spending + new taxes don't add up.

But hey, if Obama gets elected, those too lazy to get a job will love him as my hard-earned money (I'm a teacher) gets redistributed.

This great country allows millions the opportunity to make that kind of money. What's wrong with giving back to to the system that helped you become wealthy in the first place?

My greatest FEAR is that Obama will be as inept as Kennedy and START World War #3 and after we BLOW EACH OTHER UP,there won't be anyone left.PLEASE THINK ABOUT IT !!!!!!

That's right Joe – tax the hell out of people that are smart enough to make more money than you.

You likely know that the top 11% pay as much as the bottom 89% but that won't stop you from pandering and promoting the myth that the rich don't pay their share of taxes.

After all, you're the guy who gave tax refunds to people who don't even pay taxes.

Go ahead Joe, grind any possibility of a recovery to a complete halt. Nail the rich? Yeah – nail their big construction projects, nail their huge payrolls and make them pay the price for excellence.

As if rich people can't move – to the Caribbean, to the Riviera, to the Canary islands. What, are they the only people that can't get a plane ticket?

You don't believe a word you're saying, but you say it anyhow.

Anything for a vote right? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Nice vp pick obama. It was only a matter of time.

I especially love his bashing of McCain for being a de-regulator. He obviously is confusing regulating with oversite. Govt regulation is why healthcare costs are so high and is not the answer for wall st. Govt regulation does not work in a free market and especially not in the private sector.

Govt oversite is the answer we're all looking for.

Once again for the obamabots: Regulation, BAD. Oversite, GOOD.

TC-Indiana   September 18th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

I'm sorry, but it seems clear to me (but what no one is saying) that many people in the top income levels got there by unethical, what should have been illegal (if not was, illegal) means. Redistributing the ill-gotten gains of criminals is NOT called redistributing the wealth, it's called paying your debt to society.

Robert   September 18th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

I don't see any problem with the very Biblical mentality that to whom much is given, much is expected. If my taxes go to making the world a better place, and not starting offensive unnecessary wars or trying to justify torture or other things that are so unconscionable, I'll be happy to pay a bit more.

Huh   September 18th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Now now CNN. Why is Biden holding up a small sign that says "Vote Republican" in the picture? Is doctoring a photo of the next Vice President of the United States fair reporting? Honestly, the main stream media disgusts me.

kyra   September 18th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

I agree with Biden, why shouldn't the wealthy help middle/ disadvantage Americans through the hard times. They should ask themselves, "What would Jesus do?".

Vote Obama/ Biden 08!!!!

John (Retired Navy Chief)   September 18th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Our tax system belongs in the toilet. Why cant we have one fair tax for all? One equal tax for all people? So what if you make a billion you would still have to pay the tax. In the Federal system like the military all people have to pay 28% on bonus they receive, no matter if you are officer or enlisted, rich or poor you will pay the 28%.

daliz   September 18th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

War costs a lot of money. We have a huge deficit. The rich can most afford it. It's time someone asked it of them. The Republicans are spinning everything. They try to make out what's good is bad, and what's bad is good. It's time when a good idea is mentioned, that is defended.

Joseph   September 18th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

So on a day when McCain seems stumped about whether or not Spain is an ally or not, the Republicans try to make Biden's very honest statement and appeal some type of "gaffe." Crazy.

Thank you, Joe Biden, for making a valid point about what we actually value in this country. The rich just milking the sweat of the workers or everyone helping all to have an opportunity to achieve the American dream.

But on Tuesday, when asked how much worse the economy would have to get before the campaign released a specific plan, McCain senior adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin said that it wasn't "imperative" for an "exact" plan to be drawn up yet.

"I think the moment when we write down a specific plan is the moment we send legislation from a McCain administration to Congress. That's the moment when that happens," he said.

Hey, I'm ready for the wealthy to take the fair share of tax burden in this country. They can give up buying a small gift, such as a Maserati, for a son or daughter, and join the rest of us in supporting our country financially.

I make over $250,000 a year. My ability to hire good people to work for me is limited by their inability to find housing, afford gasoline for travel or maintain a decent amount of savings despite the fact that I pay them quite well. I agree with every single word Sen. Biden says.

Boye   September 18th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

I am kinda confused, what is wrong in saying "it's time to be patriotic" to people you are expecting to tax higher. You think going to war is the only way of showing patriotism? I mean, people making $250k and over will be giving up some of their cash for the good of the country's economy, that's patriotism in my book.

It seems that so far, the people being asked to sacrifice the most are the little people. I think its high time that the top tier whom have prospered greatly under the Bush Administration and stand to continue to under a McCain Administration to pony up and show that thye are willing to suffer for this Country too.

Country First, right John?

bob in LA   September 18th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

The question of what is patriotic should be answered with- what is best for the country. Higher taxes to help us out of the mess we are in is financially responsible and VERY patriotic and far-sighted, thinking of future generations.
Good for you Joe!

The Rich need to pay their share. They have to remember that much of their precious dividend is composed out the 'savings' made from paying hard working Americans less than $8/hour.

Maybe McCain should talk about linking the minimum wage with how many houses he owns – one dollar per house. What would it be now – $10 or $11/hr? He should do that – he really cares for and loves poor people. That's why he wants to make more of them.

Obviously Biden values more taxes... big surprise...

It's all spin... over 250K a year is 99% of small business...

You increase my payroll tax... I lay two people off... you increase tax on profits... I lay off two more... I have overhead, social security to match, pension to match, payroll tax, insurance, utilities, etc...

On paper I make a lot... however very little hits the wallet... this is typical Dem spin... THEY WILL RAISE TAXES... except yes... if you paid 700 last year you might pay 400 under their plan... but if you employ 40 people... and pay 185,000 in taxes... it goes to 245,000... that's two or three people gotta go!
