Rothschild said she hasn't spoken to Hillary Clinton about her endorsement of John McCain.

(CNN) – Lynn Forester de Rothschild, once a prominent supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for president who has switched her allegiance to Sen. John McCain, is pushing back on attempts by some Democrats to “play the class card” against her.

Watch: Rothschild makes McCain's case

De Rothschild, the wife of a scion of the British Rothschild family that made its fortune in private banking, is standing by her charge that it is Sen. Barack Obama who is the elitist. “An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us,” Rothschild told CNN’s John Roberts on American Morning Thursday. “As president, he will be very full of himself. That is elitist, ok. To be privileged is not elitist.”

Rothschild pointed to her middle-class origins in response to Democratic charges that she is an elitist. “I am a girl from New Jersey. A middle-class family. My father worked two jobs. Four kids went to college, law school. I earned a good part of the fortune that we have,” she said.

De Rothschild, a lawyer and entrepreneur who made a reported $100 million in telecommunications before she met Sir Evelyn Rothschild, was a prolific fundraiser for Sen. Clinton. On American Morning, she defended McCain’s record on equal pay for women, an issue the Obama campaign highlighted on the same day de Rothschild announced her endorsement of McCain.

“Trying to tag John McCain as ‘not good for women’ is just insane,” de Rothschild said Wednesday. She also told Roberts that McCain has “a record” of taking on special interests, bipartisanship, leadership, and making tough decisions while Obama only has “rhetoric” on all of those points.

I don't get it. If Obama is elitist, why are elites like Rothschild pissed off? Even more, why is Obama taxes heavy on elites and light on poor?

If Obama is elitist, elites like Rothschild and Cindy McCain should support him.

bob   September 18th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Obama/Biden are on a smear campaign beacuse they would 'nt know the truth if it hit them in the postier. Too bad no one has the guts to talk up how much Fannie and Freddie paid those two over the years and how many bills were sponsored by McCain to get those weasels we just bailed out to be regulated. Oh yeah that was because Barney Frank and team may have had their hands in the cookie jar eh?

GE   September 18th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Ms. Smith, she's obviously entitled to her opinions; we just find it very amusing that a Rothschild would call someone 'elitist' (it's not surprising though that a large number of conservatives have probably never even heard of the Rothschilds, considering their aversion to anything beyond Fox News).

TC   September 18th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

I can see the White House from the front stoop of my condominium and it's only 3 blocks away. Hell of a lot closer than Russia.

HOORAY! I'm qualified to be Vice President!

Christina   September 18th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

Yawn! So...wait...someone has an opinion about this election? Why is no one televising my opinion, oh yeah, because I'm not RICH!

The only thing remotely interesting about this woman is her husband's status as a scion. Seriously, what's a "scion"? I looked it up on wikipedia, and it means a son or daughter. So now the bigger question is, why did Toyota choose that for a car name?

Oh sorry Mrs. De Rothschild, you were speaking?

ccat   September 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

It's insane that McCain publicly opposed the Lilly Ledbetter bill and skipped out on its vote, conveniently. Is that someone who supports women's rights? And he wants to overturn Roe v. Wade.

I guess if you are a community organizer instead of a high priced lawyer, you are someone who thinks you are "better" than everyone else and are therefore an "elitist." Get real.

You are voting for the person who most looks like you. If you're not an elitist, what does that make you?

BR   September 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Typical crying from the obamaphiles. Why don't you go flooding the radio stations with calls to beat down his opponents. Your boy will lose in Nov. 4 more years of Republican Rule. I love it!

jake747   September 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

This "elitist" label everyone keeps trying to pin on Obama is absurd. According to her own definition that an elitist is someone who thinks they are better than us - nearly every single politician in this country would fall under that. And, I'm sorry, don't by the argument "elitism" is a mindset. Hogwash, it is totally related to ones priviledges in life.

Mrs. Smith, have you heard and read comments from the other side? C'mon, both sides are firing attacks, if you can't see both do it, you are pretty blind.

Carol   September 18th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Special thanks to Lynn Forester de Rothschild. She said the same thing women have been saying for months, but our voice has been unheard by the DNC. She has the power to be heard and the courage to say it.

Looks like De Rothschild is supporting McCain to spite Obama but not based on 'issues' simply because Hillary lost. It seems like she is 'bitter' and did not get over the fact that Hillary lost. She is entitled to endorse McCain but she should shut up and stop labelling Obama 'elitist' and using harsh words like 'it is insane to say McCain is not good for women'. Well, I am a woman and John McCain's vote against 'equal pay for equal work' is not good for me. Does that sound 'insane'?. She is the 'elitist' and struggling families know that OBAMA IS NOT ELITIST. I wonder when she is going back to London for her vacation and give us a break!

Rose   September 18th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I guess she was an okay person when she supported Clinton but now she isn't. Ms. Smith is right, everyone is entitled to their own opinions

OPO   September 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Is this woman serious? She is the ELITIST whose words come off as pretty insulting. She is either very very bitter that Hillary lost or just doesn't like the idea of a confident black guy in the white house. How can u justify this switch when Obama and Clinton were about 95% the same on the issues. You don't "trust" him and he is "full of himself." Is this Geraldine Ferraro's more racist sister?!?!?!

You have got to be kidding me she says "An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us" Ok, she has described herself, but not Obama.

MW / Calif.   September 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Campbell did an excellent job interviewing this woman last night. Lynn simply could not answer why she accuses Obama of being an elitist. Makes me wonder why she really hates Obama?? Hummmm

Brian L   September 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

If Obama were truly an elitist, would he have used that Ivy league education to help the urban Chicago poor? Elitists don't have a strong record of subverting their own ambitions to help the less fortunate. She may not like Obama because he is smarter than most of us- but that doesn't make him elitist.

In any case, I'd rather have a brilliant elitist navigating our country away from certain disaster than a well-meaning buffoon.

KennyT   September 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Not only is Mr. NOBAMA an elitist, but he is also a racist.
Only he could attend a church for 20 years, and be mentored by a racist most of his adult life (the Good Reverend) and say he never got the message that was preached from the pulpit? Come on people the man is a joke. She is not the only Democrat that has opened her eyes, many of us have.
Hillary 2012!!

Go Mc Cain – Palin

idahosa, Canada   September 18th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

it would really be nice if CNN can post a link to the interview Campbell Brown did with Lynn Forester de Rothschild on Wed 17th.

this nut job could not defend her claims that obama is an elitist and arrogant. isn't it sad that people like this who should know better focus on irrelevant claims and make their decisions based on that?

it just shows that having money does necessarily make you smart person.

Mark   September 18th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Why should we care about this Rotten child?? Economy is screwed. stocks are tumbling, and we are worrying about Donald Trump, Rotten child, Limbaug and Joe Dauberman or Bill O'reily.

Shame on us. We always get our attention diverted to unnecessary issues.

Lissa in Montreal   September 18th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

I've yet to hear her say one thing to back up her support of McCain or her disdain of Obama. She's making a fool of herself by going public.

Let's keep our eye on the ball here: her support wouldn't make OR break Senator Obama's bid for the white house and it is less than is needed for Senator McCain to get the votes he so desperately needs.

No worries. She's only 1 sour grape.

Thanh   September 18th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Just because you have money and properties doesn't make you elite in this sense. She's talking about the state of mind. Obama is drunk with power. Look at the stage he had built for his acceptance speech. It was a temple. He oversold his tickets to the stadium as well.

Then there's the O seal he created in the likeness of the presidential seal. The man is so full of himself. People forgot the guns and religion bit. He says he wants to give power back to the people, but he wants to create new agencies and government institutions to govern their lives and he sells that to his followers like a preacher.

He declined public campaign financing. The list goes on and on.

O Bama and the dems are succeeding at what they do best–divide the country racially and economically. Because idiots like you actually believe it.

Frank   September 18th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

McCain/Palin! These hard workers deserve to win the White House and clean up this crazy mess!

Tim   September 18th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Give me a break ! She was an enthusiastic supporter of Senator Clinton and now supports McCain whose views are in stark contrast to Clinton's. She doesn't have to like anybody and can support whomever she wants, but don't be an "elitist" hypocrite. Senators Clinton and Obama have practically identical views on the issues. I loved my Grandmother, but I wouldn't have voted for her just because she was a woman. Apparently Rothschild's support for Clinton was purely gender-based as she now enthusiastically embraces Palin regardless of the issues.

obamacrat   September 18th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

So basically she is saying..."I feel that Obama is an elitist so now I am changing sides and voting for a man who wants to continue the war in Iraq, doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose, doesn't have a plan to make healthcare affordable, and the list goes on and on..." It is a shame that there are so many people around the world who can't vote for their leader and we have people such as Lynn Forester de Rothschild that base their vote on utter nonsense. "I don't like Obama so I'm voting for McCain". Give me a break.

Foo Man Jew   September 18th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

NO MENTION OF THIS AT ALL ON THE TICKER...I WONDER WHY?

Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, a maverick Republican from Maryland, endorsed Illinois Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president in an interview with WYPR, Baltimore's National Public Radio station Wednesday.

Gilchrest, who lost a primary campaign and is retiring from Congress, has already endorsed the Democrat running for his seat, Frank Kratovil. Justifying his endorsement of Obama, Gilchrest said that "we can't use four more years of the same kind of policy that's somewhat haphazard, which leads to recklessness."

Obama and his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), "have the breadth of experience. I think they're prudent. They're knowledgable."

The Voice   September 18th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

I am a Hillary fan, but this woman is insane. Reasons not to vote for the McPalin Ticket:

-Kept the money from the bridge to nowhere
-Is under investigation for corruption, abuse of power
-Wants public schools to teach creationism
-Alaska only truly supplies 3% of natural gas in the U.S. not 20%
-$198 million in earmarks, still the highest in the nation per capita Reformer?
-Against sex education! Irony?

"As President, he will be very full of himself." Oh my. A person who is proud of his accomplishments is, I guess, an elitist. Hmm, you sound pretty proud of your accomplishments, Mrs. Rothchild-methinks that you are an elitist by your own definition.

Why don't you just be honest and say that you can't vote for a person of mixed race...and stop this stupid tiff over semantics? You are a racist elitist, and should be very happy in the Republican party with Palin. Good riddance.

Here's the problem–people who are elite are unable to define what that means. Just like a rich person usually thinks they're not rich, but the next guy up the ladder is. It is utterly ridiculous, given her background, that Lynn Forester De Rothschild thinks Obama is elite and she isn't. Just look at her name–there's a clue right there.....

It appears to be that this woman is solely looking for a woman to be either president or vice president. I would wonder if she actually looked at the policies and past voting record of Obama and McCain. It doesn't matter if you don't like someone; what matters is what the policies have and will be. If you like the policies and how they voted on them in the past, that is your candidate.

As for her being a Jersey girl, that is fine, but I don't believe her. Where did she grow up?

You Obama supporters crack me up!! Why is it that anyone who doesn't like him is a racist? I am married to a black man and I don't think you can call me a racist. But I cannot stand the arrogance of Obama and his supporters.

During the primaries, he and his supporters blamed everything that was bad on Hillary Clinton and her "bitter" supporters. And of course, now they have the Republicans to blame for everything.

Take a look in the mirror you morons. Heaven forbid anyone should call you or your candidate unflattering names, but it is OK for you to call McCain and Palin by every disgusting name in the book, and mock them at the same time.

I am scared to death of another 4 years of republican rule, but I will not vote for "Mr. Arrogance".

I know it was a different thread, but why did the Obama campaign release an ad in Spanish blaming McCain for all of the immigration woes? Did you honestly think no one would understand what you were saying?

And one more thing...CNN why did you close the comments after only 7 replies on the above noted story? Too many people not agreeing with you?

Callie Willis- 23- Savannah, GA   September 18th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

My question to her is why was she supporting Hillary Clinton? Why is she a democrat? Why is she even here? She could have kept her comments to herself but for her to go out now and support all of McCain's issues and stances is ridiculous. I am not kocking her wealth but her reasons for not supporting obama aren't what they seam because he isn't an elitist and it is unfortunante that she doesn't see McCain for who he is because if that wase the case she would have supported him from the start!!

Common Sense is something that we all DON"T have. I hope and pray her reasons aren't race related.

Mike G   September 18th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

No an elitist is someone who thinks that their oh so important opinion is newsworthy simply because they are rich, and raised lots of money for different candidates. She mentions nothing about the issues and is an expert on nothing except arrogance, and creating unnecessary drama.

DISENFRANCHISEMENT FOR MINORITIES   September 18th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Yes, we now do have a paper trail. It will be much harder for them to steal it but they are already trying other things.
The Republican secretary of state just put into effect a law that says if your drivers license address doesn't match what's in the Supv of elections system, you will not get a ballot but will instead get a provisional ballot. You will get to vote on it but you will have to go to the Supv of elections office within a couple days to prove that your vote should count. If you don't it will be thrown out. This will primarily effect the poor and minority voters who would tend to vote Democratic. This will cause delays at the polling place as people are challenged and many will probably get angry and leave. This is what they are hoping....

Now I just read an article a couple days ago that the Sec of State in Wisconsin, also a Republican just instituted the same law. The polls in Wisconsin are very close and the Democrats normally win there so I think they are trying to tip the scales in there favor there.

The will stop at nothing to win an election!

Keep America safe, McCain in 08   September 18th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

This is great news to have another Democrat moving to the other side.

BO has a lot of baggage and is not the right person to lead our country. The do nothing Democrats in both house, are again proving that they could care less about the taxpayers of this country.
The latest being, the vote to drill oil outside the 50 mile limit, where there isn't enough oil there to support the USA.
You BO supporters better start listening and understanding what is going on. can stop listening to the BS, that BO is giving out regarding John McCain and the Bush Administration. Mr McCain is his own man, an honerable man, BO can not even come close to being honerable. He is so far up the Dem. %^& , it hard to seperate them.

Bo and the present Democrats are the problem not the solution.

Dem. going Repub.

"An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us"
----------

What a nut case. Isn't it time for high tea so that you can watch the polo-ponies and yell at the coloured folks to hurry up with their chores.

Oh and by the way, Mrs. Frou-Frou, an elitist is not someone who thinks they are better than the rest of us, an elitist is someone WHO HAS SHOWN that they are better than the rest of us. Marrying a rich English dud doesn't earn you that right.

Lady Is Dillusional   September 18th, 2008 2:22 pm ET

I believe if Obama loses this election, Clinton will not stand a chance in 2012. There are so many of her supporters make a noise now to derail Obamas bid. I guess these so-called Democrats are not really Democrats. She might have earned millions of dollars but she has no common sense. All she would have to do is look at McCain's record to know who he is for. He is for people like her, people with a lot of money. Makes no difference if she is a woman or a man, as long as she has millions. Please stop printing stuff about her. She has had her 15 minutes of fame.

She stated on Larry King when pressed for an answer as to why she is voting for McCain after supporting Clinton in the primary, she stated that it's because Obama is an elitist. She's one of the ten riches women on the planet and she calls Obama an elitist???? This stuff just gets stranger and stranger. And oh yeah, Gov. Palin thanks but no thanks on that trip to the White House.

mike   September 18th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

And here we have the McCain/Palin base. Old, rich and out of touch people that have NO IDEA how much a gallon of milk costs.

Why did she support Hillary? If its ANYTHING other then because she's a woman... then she should be supporting Obama – who has just about the same POLICY!!!

America think for you   September 18th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

The reason why our economy is crashing is because of Iraq all the money that was supposed to refuel the economy are been sent to Iraq while the economy is let alone to die. The consumers have no confidence in the market that is mean they will not spend and again the economy will struggle. John McCain does not understand that simple economics formula and stated that the economy is strong. I know that McCain pocket is strong because he is a rich man. But, our economy is not strong.

Jacqueline for Obama/Biden 08!   September 18th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I watched Rothschild interview with Campbell Brown last nite. How can anyone with this woman's resume, prestige, and money be in a position to call Barack Obama an elitist? It's absolutely laughable. The term elitist was coined to describe people just like her.

What she should do is stop hiding behind this "elitist" bs, and be honest enough to say why she REALLY refuses to support Obama. She is yet another person who is not ready or willing to embrace the idea of a qualified, educated, charismatic, African American man as president of the United States.

Voters have two choices:

1) Vote for the guy who agrees with George W Bush 90% of the time: McCain

2) Vote for the guy who agrees with Hillary Clinton 90% of the time: Obama

Rothschild made her choice; she now supports the guy who wants to even further deregulate the industry that made her husband rich. Big surprise.

Karma from Indiana   September 18th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

I am not sure if any of you all so her interview the Campbell yesterday.. She looked like an idiot as she sat there and talked about her muti billion dollar fortune but called Obama an elitist..She never answered Campbel's question directly about that.

She seems to think that Obama didn't have to work to where he is either.

And the fact that she's defending McCain on women's issues is laughable. He does have a record, that's true. But it's mostly bad, and what of it that's good he's run away from. She says Obama simply has rhetoric...but McCain is worse. He has rhetoric that says one thing, then a record that says the other.

And I seriously don't understand the line about, "An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us" comes from... guess she must be a mind-reader in addition to being the wife of "Sir" Evelyn Rothschild. I'm sure De Rothschild and her $100+ million fortune she made doesn't go around thinking she's better than the rest of us... right...

I am from a blue state but I will still come out in support of Obama, even though I am positive he will win anyway, I want the popular vote to blow the doors off the republicans!

Even if you are in a solidly red or blue state, come out and vote november, lets get the popularity vote to really send a message loud and clear!!

Let's get this straight: being raised by a single mom and working your way through school is being an elitist. You have to be born to a powerful family who uses influence to get you into West Point when your grades aren't good enough to get you in anywhere else; or, be born a Rothschild and we all know that that name means nothing (LOL, LOL, LOL, LOL) – oh yeah – you are soooooo down to earth.

Can someone in the news media ask this woman 3 questions?

1) Name 1 issue Hillary Clinton is closer to McCain on than Obama?

2) Please name 1 women's issue for which McCain has lead and/or supported? (Picking Sarah Palin doesn't count)

3) Please explain why you believe Obama to be snobbish and/or elitist? (No generalities or "feelings", only empirical evidence...)

Gia in Los Angeles, CA   September 18th, 2008 2:07 pm ET

She said: “An elitist is someone whose state of mind is that they’re better than the rest of us,”

By her definition, she can't possibly be referring to Obama. He's always talking about "we" - about how together we can fix the problems this country faces and make the world a better place. He's the community organizer working side-by-side with anybody willing to make a positive difference. He doesn't put himself above anybody.

What strikes me as strange is that she believes there wouldn't be to much democratic control if Hillary was in the White House and Pelosi in Congress. This thougt pattern from a woman who claims that she's been a Democrat all her life. I think she's someone that has a problem not with a democrat in the White House, but an African American in the White House.

...AND IM A TODDLER FROM ALASKA

JPM in Michigan   September 18th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

McCAIN's AMBITION SHOWS HE IS FULL OF HIMSELF: In McCain's 2002 memoir, "Worth the Fighting For," he wrote,"I didn"t decide to run for president to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. . . . In truth, I"d had the ambition for a long time."

Blind, empty, raw ambition to be President. Just like Palin's blind empty ambition to be VP.
